Cut a row of diamonds by using a ruler with the
2½" (the width of each strip) distance along the
diagonal cut. Butt the Starmaker 8 up against
the ruler, remove the ruler, and cut along the
Starmaker 8. Cut 8 rows of diamonds from each
strip set.

Cut the number of 2½" strips listed in the chart:
1 strip of the #1 fabric
2 strips of the #2 fabrics, etc.
Sew the strips sets as shown in the chart. Offset
the strips by 2" to save fabric.
16
Kaye's Technique: Cut each strip into rows
of diamonds, by placing the bottom of the
Starmaker® 8 along the bottom of the strip set.
Cut along the diagonal line.

Kaye;s Technique: Make a chart
showing the number of diamonds in
each point of the star.
The chart has a lot of the information you need,
such as:
a. The number of strips to cut from each
fabric, eg. cut 4 strips from the #4 fabric, cut 2
strips from the #6 fabric.
b. The way the strips are sewn together
into strip sets, e.g. #1 through #4 are sewn into
one strip set.
c. The angle to cut the strip sets.

Line up the rows of diamonds, according to the
chart.
Kaye's Matching Techniques: Two different
types of matching seamlines are used—a
Diamond Match and a Needle Match.
A Diamond Match is used on the seamlines
between the diamonds. The seamline
must match ¼" in from the righthand side of the segments (marked
with an black dot).
To match these seamlines, insert a
pin from the wrong side of the top
segment, directly in the seamline and ¼" in
from the edge.
needle
Put the pin through
match
to the right side of the
underneath segment and
1/4" from the edge.
DO NOT TURN THE
PIN NOW.
Hold the pin straight up and down through
both points.
Hold the seam allowances together between
your thumb and finger to keep the seamlines
matched; then turn the pin and bring the point
of the pin up through the fabric following the
underneath seamline.
Note: Pinning is more accurate when the
pin goes along the straight of grain(along the
seamline).
A Needle Match is used for the V that forms at
the top of the segments.
Put the sewing machine needle down into the
machine; it should be set to sew ¼" seam with a
¼" foot with seam guide.
Place the bottom segment under the machine
presser foot, with the fabric against the guide on
the foot.
Place the top segment under the machine
presser foot. The two segments should overlap at
the needle. If the needle is not in the spot where
the two segments overlap, leave the needle down
and adjust the segments.
Lower the presser foot and start sewing.
Kaye's Technique: Sew the star points together
into groups of two; sew all the way from one
edge to the next (do NOT leave the seams open
¼")
The ¼" seam allowance must be accurate all the
way to the center of the star. If the center of the
star does not lay flat, it is usually because you
narrow the seam allowance as you come into the
center.
Complete directions for finishing the Lone Star
are in Kaye's book, Everyone Can Quilt.
Kaye's Teacher Certification classes stress her
original techniques for cutting, sewing and pressing
to insure ease and success in quiltmaking.
