Our Children, Our Community, Believe it can be done!
Headteacher’s ‘Thought For The Week’
Year 13 - Rock Climbing
New Year
January, the first month of the year gets its name from
the Roman god, Janus or Janarius, who was represented
as having two heads and two pairs of eyes, each pair
looking in the opposite direction from the other, and each
head facing a different direction from each other.
New Year is often a time when we take stock, which is a
good thing. It’s good to look back over 2015 and trace the
good and the bad; learning lessons from both of them.
It’s also a good time to look forward to a new year of
opportunity, of privilege and responsibility.
Let us strive to make 2016 a collective success
throughout the Broadway community not only in
educational outcomes but also in terms of how we serve
each other. The famous business leader and author
Robert K. Greenleaf who wrote the international best
seller ‘Servant Leadership’ says that ‘Service’ ought to be
the distinguishing characteristic of leadership. I agree
with Greenleaf when he states that Headteacher’s and
Business Leaders themselves ‘would find greater joy in
their lives if they raised the servant aspect of their
leadership and built more serving institutions’
Can we all endeavour to make 2016 at Broadway Academy a year of service to each other and to the community.
At the end of last half term several year 13 pupils went
rock climbing with Ms Jeffries, as part of the outdoor
education unit of their level 3 BTEC Sport Course.

Happy New Year!

NEWSLETTER EXTRA - JANUARY SPECIAL EDITION ON ATTENDANCE
I’m sure you are all aware of how important good attendance at school is. How well your child attends at
school can be a major factor in deciding what exam results he or she leaves with.
As ever at Broadway we set the highest possible standards for your children. The overall attendance for
pupils at the school has continued to go up for the last six years. This year we have set our highest ever target at 96%.
To allow us to achieve this it is important that as many of our pupils as possible achieve attendance totals of
between 96 and 100%.
This means taking little or no time off school.
QUESTION
HOW CAN YOU, AS PARENTS, HELP US TO ACHIEVE THIS TARGET?
ANSWER

Talk to your child/children about the importance of attending school regularly.

Don’t allow them to take time off unless there are very good reasons for not attending (not feeling well
is often an excuse not a real reason).

Avoid organising holidays abroad in term time (this is against the law anyway).
REWARDS FOR GOOD ATTENDANCE
CERTIFICATES – All pupils will have attendance targets set each term to try and improve on the previous
term. Certificates will be awarded to them if they achieve their targets.
FORM PRIZES – The top and most improved forms in the school for attendance will receive certificates and
chocolates each week.
LISTS OF PUPILS WITH 96%+ So that all our parents are kept aware of pupils with 96%+ lists of names
will be sent home each month. The first list, based on attendance between September and December can
be seen on the next 4 pages. If your child’s name is not on this list please do your best to ensure they are
on the next list at the end of January.
PLEASE DO YOUR BEST IN HELPING US TO ACHIEVE THIS TARGET FOR YOUR CHILDREN’S SAKE
PUNCTUALITY
Arriving to school on time is also very important. We want every child to make the most of every minute of
their education at Broadway.
LATE POSTCARDS
To keep you informed when your child is late you will be sent a postcard with their name on and the time
they came into school. If you do receive one of these try and ensure that your child is not late again so that
you do not receive another. An entry goes on your child’s/children’s school attendance record every time they
are late.

Visit to The New Art Gallery, Walsall
Visit to the Museum storage centre
A group of pupils from Broadway Academy
visited the New Art Gallery in Walsall recently.
They took part in a screen printing workshop
which was based on an Epstein sculpture
featured in the gallery ( as pictured). They also
had the opportunity to explore the exhibitions
and discuss with the gallery's artists, the
fascinating pieces of art displayed there.
The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
These are some of the comments they made
about their visit:
'This was my first ever visit to any art gallery.
It was awesome!' Aqib A.
'I thought it was going to be boring, it was
amazing' Habibur R.
'I had a fun day. I wasn't expecting it to be so
much fun' Adam A.
‘I have learnt how to do screen printing. I have
really enjoyed today' Mohammed A.
Yr 10 art students took part in a visit to a
warehouse hidden in the backstreets of
Nechells. This storage centre looks like any
other factory unit in this part of town, but looks
are misleading!!
When entering it is like something out of
Indiana Jones and the lost Ark, racking
stretches from floor to ceiling housing the most
weird and wonderful artefacts from around our
local area and further afield. The storage centre
houses items from the 5 museums from around
the city, which are not currently being used.
These include the Central Museum and Art
Gallery and Aston Hall.
We had specifically asked to view some of the
taxidermy collection they have, focusing on
exotic and tropical butterflies and insects.
These have been collected from all over the
world and catalogue a vast variety of unusual
species. Pupils then had opportunity to draw
from these fascinating artefacts first hand in
the classroom part of the storage centre. Many
of the specimens were unusual shapes and
colours with striking markings which pupils would
not get to experience through secondary
sources such as books or Google.
This opportunity will help the pupils answer the
recording assessment of their GCSE criteria and
develop more realistic and detailed coursework
as part of their butterfly and insect unit.
Nechells Museum and storage centre is open to
the public the last Friday of the month and is
free to attend for the public; it is well worth a
visit.

Medical Projects is a limited company registered in
England and Wales No. 09436506.
Overseas hospital work experience for aspiring doctors,
nurses and midwives.
Our partners who operate bus, rail and Metro services
have asked us to remind West Midlands students to be
extra cautious about leaving school bags on their services.
With the current nationwide threat level set at ‘Severe’
it is especially important for students to be mindful of
lost property.
There have been a number of recently reported
incidents of bags being left on public transport by
students.
We do not wish to alarm your pupils but ask that you
pass on our advice to make sure they take their property
with them when leaving public transport services.
Due to the current sensitive climate we are in, an
innocuous issue such as lost property can still have a
negative effect on public perception of safety, traffic,
services running punctually and of course Police time.
The Safer Travel Partnership is made up of West
Midlands Police, British Transport Police, Centro and
Transport Operators. The aim of the partnership is to
assist in making public transport even safer.
To report incidents of a criminal nature, passengers can
call West Midlands Police on 0845 113 5000 or in event of
an emergency via 999.
Kind regards
Paula Shortland

Values Focus of the Week
NEW YEAR: NEW VALUES?
New year is a time of reflection and change; to examine how small behavioural changes can make a big difference; to
reflect on positive changes for yourself.
It is the start of a new term and the start of a new year, a time of new beginnings. At the start of a new year, people
often make a promise to themselves to change things in their life—this is called: ‘making resolutions.’
Most people make resolutions with the very best of intentions but find it difficult to stick to them!
So what can you do to show change for the better in 2016? Last term, last year the VALUES FOCUS of the week
enabled you to discover what the Broadway Core Values are and why they are important. Each focus of the week asked
you to reflect on and put into action an aspect of a particular value: how this related to your school life and in your
character development.
These values are for life not just for January! As the saying goes: ‘KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON!’
Putting our core values into action and modelling them is what will change things for the better— for you, for the school
and for the community we live in.
This Week's Golden Words
The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul.’
