Relationships at Work
Rebecca Fowler, Publisher & Lisa Moore, Editor
T
wo years ago, Lisa Moore placed a phone call
to inquire about advertising her yoga business
in Natural Awakenings Magazine. Lisa met with
owner, Rebecca Fowler to discuss ad possibilities.
What started out as an advertising sale evolved into a high-energy business
relationship and a supportive sisterly friendship. Meet the two women who
make Natural Awakenings Charlotte edition happen each month.
In this issue as we explore relationships in their many forms, we thought
if would be fun to let you know a little about our own working relationship.
Rebecca: “From the first meeting with Lisa she quickly went from being my
new client to my new friend. Then when I discovered she had a journalism
degree and a background in advertising, I convinced her to become my
coworker as well.
As the publisher of Natural Awakenings, I have a vision for how I want
each issue to read, feel and look. I may come up with a rough idea for a
story and as the editor, Lisa always creates something beautiful with it.
We balance each other. I have a lot of inspiration for new projects but
can tend to run off chasing too many tangents at once. Lisa helps me stay
focused and keeps the energy moving so my seemingly random creative
thoughts can become a reality.
We have the most fun coming up with ideas for our advertisers. Lisa has
advertising agency experience and I was a holistic practitioner. We put that
life experience to work for our clients to create powerful ads for them. The
two of us are always thinking in creative terms and turning our wacky ideas
into marketing gems. It isn’t unheard of for Lisa to call me in the morning
and say, ‘I had this idea! Let me see, I woke up in the middle of the night
and wrote it down on my hand!’
Working with Lisa is truly a holistic experience. It’s like working with
your revered colleague, your sister, your best friend and your counselor all
at once!”
Lisa: “Our working relationship began as an enjoyable task to get an informative and interesting publication out to unite Charlotte’s holistic community. Since becoming editor a year ago, it has transformed into acting
on shared passions to multi-culturally, artistically and spiritually unite the
community at large.
Now there are not enough hours in the day to process the ideas and
dreams that we share. Rebecca and I are so in sync. Practically every time I
call her up, she is dialing me at the same time. Sometimes I think we share
a brain and a heart. Rebecca is an astute business woman and a visionary
who never doubts her innate power. She is always the calm in every storm
we encounter. Together we co-creatively and humorously meander through
the hectic process of producing something that we hope will make a difference.
The experiences we’ve shared this year have been rich and varied: Sufi
dancing, hypnotherapy, Bhakti chanting, silent retreats, yoga in yurts, world
peace meditations, sitting at the feet of His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. I
can’t wait to see where the continual adventure leads to in 2007!”......
May All Your Relationships Be Healthy!

Are You Comfortable
in Your Genes?
Take Part in the
“Great Jeans Giveaway”
T
he Charlotte Center for Balanced Living,
who focuses on holistic treatment for
eating disorders, is a coordinator for National Eating Disorders Awareness Week held February 25 - March
3. The center is sponsoring the Great Jeans Giveaway in honor of
the theme “Be comfortable in your genes. Wear jeans that fit the
REAL you.”
Many people have a pair of “skinny jeans” they are hoping
to squeeze into again. Few realize that this pair of jeans may be
dangerous to their health and happiness. They often resolve to get
back into their “skinny jeans” by losing large amounts of weight in
unhealthy ways.
“By attempting to fit into jeans from a different period in our
lives, we are living in denial of who and where we are now. By
working to accept our jeans and our genes, we can live a more balanced, genuine and fulfilling life,” says Michelle Miller, a psychiatrist at the center.
“Participants can donate old or new jeans to our center during the entire week. We also will be offering free eating disorder
screenings as well as nutritional and acupuncture consultations,”
concludes Miller.
The Charlotte Center for Balanced Living is located at 505 East
Blvd., Suite 200 in Charlotte. For more information on the events
and services offered, call 704-378-1390 or visit CharlotteBalance.

New Spirituality in Practicality
Workshop Forming
Doodling as Meditation?
“N
Anatomy of the Heart
A
rtist Dennis DiAddezzio created
“Anatomy of the Heart” to
symbolically represent the many
pieces of love we give and receive.
“There is a piece to reflect the
love we have for each person in
our lives and a piece to show the
love we receive from those in our
lives. There are even some for those
that offend us. Are you using all
the pieces of your heart or are you
putting conditions on the giving and
receiving?” states DiAddezzio, who
resides in the high desert of Utah.
The work DiAddezzio creates
is a magical symphony of art,
technology and intuition. A selftaught artist, he works in inks and
gouache to create a magical blend
of abstract geometry that he layers
and integrates. Taking the process
to another level, he creates digital
files from the original work which
enhances it further. The final result
is an array of dazzling geometrical
shapes that are perfectly arranged
into matrix-like order.
DiAddezzio works as if he is
ssembling a puzzle he has never
seen but knows where every piece
belongs. Guided by divine spirit, he
reaches for an unknown quality that
keeps the work evolving.

ew Spirituality in Practicality” will show

out creativity and spirituality to use in everyday life.
“Spirituality is the essence of who we are,” workshop
facilitator Don Grothoff states, “New Spirituality is
how our spirituality is connected and relates to all human beings’ spirituality.”
Grothoff has taken simple everyday experiences,
such as doodling, and combined them with Tai Chi,
Tapas Accupressure Technique, Abraham Hicks Laws
of Attraction, the messages of Conversation with God
books and various methods of meditation for self-exploration.

Charlotte Couples
PUT THEIR
HEARTS INTO HOLISTIC BUSINESSES
By Lisa Moore
o many couples, owning and running their own business
sounds like a dream come true. However, great satisfaction and big challenges can coexist on many levels. There’s
a lot of freedom in spending time with the person you love
and creating something new out of a passion for your work
and each other. But it can be difficult to create effective
structures to resolve conflicts quickly and define boundaries
between work and family life. Five Charlotte couples with
established holistic businesses share their experiences of
successfully working together full time.

challenge is there are a whole lot more things to argue
about when you spend so much of your life together. You
have to make a commitment not to argue too much.”
Eric: “Much of what we teach at our school is centered
around finding balance and harmony in your life. Working
as a husband and wife team, you find infinite challenges:
The need to work too many hours, disagreements on organizational strategies and differing views on goals for the
center. Maintaining harmony and balance strengthens our
relationship as we have to compromise and really listen to
each other’s point of view.”
Funny Story from Debra: “Eric travels every year to wholesale gift shows to select merchandise to sell in our Asian
gift shop. In my mind, he would pick out a few nice things,
but he always chose lots of stupid things that no one
would want to buy. Every year I would say, ‘Don’t pick
out any more of that junk you got last year.’ He would
say, ‘Show me what junk so I know what you’re talking
about.’ But the junk was often gone, so I had to admit that
he was picking stuff that people did want to buy. One year
when several shelves were almost empty he said, ‘See, the
customers did buy almost all the tea pots from last year.’ I
took him to the storage closet and showed him hundreds
of unsold teapots. I had cleared them off the shelves because no one was buying them. He finally stopped buying
them, too!”

patients who failed with in vitro fertilization and other

Jeff: “I like working with my wife because in Chinese

This is called harmony. The husband belongs to Yang and
the wife belongs to Yin. Yin and Yang always co-exist.
My wife is very smart and always has tons of brilliant ideas and suggestions. When we work together, it is

Marc: “It’s very important to have Jyoti in the store as she
gives a more personal touch to the business. This is a family
business and without her participation it would just be an
ordinary business. Working with your spouse is very challenging and we manage by clearly defining our roles in the
business and allowing each other the freedom to do our
specific jobs.”
A Funny Story: Some years ago, Sidney Poitier was in
Charlotte to do some filming. He came into the store and
went to Marc to ask where to find yeast-free bread. Marc
didn’t recognize Poitier, but Jyoti did. When she told Marc,
he didn’t believe it. So she approached the customer to ask
if he indeed was Poitier. He acknowledged that he was, but
that wasn’t enough for Jyoti. She brought Marc over so he
could see for himself. Poitier simply said, “You should listen
to your wife.”

She makes me laugh every day. Renee helps me to stay

The best perk is that I can get a hug when I really need

Having this synergy allows us to work incredibly well
together in creating workshops and classes as well as
presenting. Christy inspires me. She is my favorite person and my best friend. We met at a conference sharing our souls passion and it has never stopped. What a
gift to have my business partner be my life partner.”
A Favorite Story from Renee: “I remember singing
once and Christy was accompanying me on guitar. I
forgot the words and she just started to sing without
missing a beat. She continued until I told her with
a look that I was coming back in and then she just
dropped out and I took the lead again. Like that song,
our work together is seamless because one picks up
where the other leaves off.

School of Sustainability
Walden 101 Sweeps Campuses
Last month, Arizona State University (ASU)
inaugurated the nation’s first School of Sustainability. Other universities also are pitting their
formidable research talent toward solving global
climate problems. On-campus green building
initiatives exemplify sensitivity to resource use.
“Climate neutral” operations are a buzzword in
halls of higher education across the country. At
minimum, schools are creating courses on the art
of sustainable living in response to student interest
in environmental and social responsibility.
ASU President Michael Crow, who helped
found the Earth Institute, counts reading Rachel
Carson’s Silent Spring as a young man as a landmark in his life. However, it wasn’t until he matured that he realized “these 70,000 chemicals and
synthetics that we have put in the atmosphere and
water were all derived mostly by universities with
no thought given to what the other impacts may be to what they are doing.”
Now his university’s $6 million virtual Decision Theater shows leaders how their
choices will play out in the environment now and into the future. “We have always
looked to academia to think creatively about the larger problems of our day,” says
Carter Roberts, president of the World Wildlife Fund. “There is not a more complicated problem than how to survive and flourish with a growing population and finite
resources.”

Appalachian Trail
America’s Largest

The famed Appalachian
Trail that stretches 2,200 miles
from Georgia to Maine may
become the national equivalent of “the canary in the coal
mine…a barometer for environmental and human health
conditions,” says Gregory
Miller of the American Hiking
Society. His is one of several
organizations collaborating with The National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service
to monitor trail health. They’ll tap into a network of thousands of volunteer professional and “citizen” scientists alert to signs of environmental stability or degradation. It could even serve as an early warning system for human inhabitants along
the eastern seaboard.
Proponents like David Startzell of the West Virginia-based Appalachian Trail
Conservancy hope the project will help spur changes in public policy and personal
behavior. He says, “Part of our hope is that as people become more aware of trends

Under Pressure
Carbon Freeze Gains Momentum
Al Gore just may become the Rachel Carson of the 21st century as he launches
a 2007 national grassroots campaign calling for a federal “freeze” on the carbon
emissions behind global warming. His movie on the subject, An Inconvenient Truth,
already has become the third highest-grossing documentary ever. According to a
Massachusetts Institute of Technology poll, it’s struck a chord with Americans. Nearly
half of us now cite global warming as the nation’s top environmental priority–up
from 20 percent in 2003.
More than 300 can-do mayors and several governors are making modest
inroads into independently cutting the 1.6 billion tons of U.S. emissions targeted by
the international Kyoto Pact that our national government has failed to ratify. More
businesses now see profit and profile-raising opportunities in going green. Utility
customers are signing up for renewable energy choices in record numbers. Now
Gore wants Americans to pressure Congress to get with the program.

Happy Workers
Retailer Wakes to Flextime
Though flexible work schedules
aren’t new, a twist on the idea at Best
Buy known as a “results-only work environment” promises to transform corporate culture for the better. This new
experiment seeks to demolish the age-old
business dogma that equates physical
presence with productivity. A more enlightened goal judges performance on
output instead of hours. Staff can show
up on a variable schedule to work their
own peak hours and even leave early, whatever works to ensure that they’re able
to function at their best.
Similar innovations at IBM, AT&T and Sun Microsystems demonstrate both
that employees are happier and real estate expenses shrink as employers realize
that it’s not necessary for everyone to be present at the same time. A recent study
by Boston Consulting Group showed that 85 percent of the responding executives
expect a big rise in the number of unleashed workers through the next five years.
“This is like TiVo for your work,” says Jody Thompson, who developed the Best Buy
program.

Bullish for Peace
The likelihood of a white bison calf being born is less than one in a million.
Yet 10 such calves have arrived in the past decade. The most recent one, this past
summer, was the second born at a Janesville, Wisconsin farm. Sioux, Cheyenne
and other Indian tribes are celebrating the phenomenon as an omen of the return of
the prophesied White Buffalo Calf Woman, designated to bring peace and restore
spiritual harmony to the world.

hat better than a dog or two
to break the social ice?
Pooches mix and mingle
with their newfound four-legged friends
and pooches’ owners link up in easy
conversation that can lead to a potential date.
A bevy of 21st century online dating
services are proving that profiling one’s
single self along with one’s pet can
yield fun along with a suitable match in
the dating scene. And many are free.
Dan Cohen founded AnimalAttraction.com because he enjoys facilitating connections “for companionship,
romance and long-term relationships.”
Within two weeks of launching his site
two years ago this month, he listed
members coast to coast of all ages,
ethnicities and backgrounds. His signature Valentine’s Day “Party Like a Dog”
events across the country have proved
especially popular.
That’s how Ted Hooban, a 34-yearold software business owner and his
dog Cuki first hooked up with a shitzu
named Milo and her guardian Melanie.
“I saw her with her silly little dog and I
started cutting up about Milo. Melanie
thought it was funny. Then we started
talking and hanging out,” recalls Hooban. The couple hit it off and started
dating, successfully accomplishing their
mission of meeting someone who likes
to share their home and relationship
with animals.
DateMyPet.com creator Robert Yau
launched his service for guardians of
dogs, cats, birds, horses, reptiles, fish
and more after hearing how so many
potentially promising relationships
erode due to incompatibility with a
sweetheart’s animal. “When the decision came to choose the partner or a
pet, it was a no-brainer” for the majority of animal lovers he spoke with. Time
and again, “The pet won.”
“You don’t want to make a choice
of getting rid of your pet or your partner,” says Trish Pitzel, creator and “top
dog” at LoveUnleashed.com. Singles,
she notes, have an even stronger bond
as their animals often are their only
faithful companions. For a dog lover,
“it would be heartbreaking to have a
potential life mate who is allergic or
dislikes dogs in general,” she says.
That’s why bringing a pet along
online and on a date helps in evaluating a prospective connection. These
online matchmakers feel that deeply
caring for an animal goes a long way in
pre-qualifying people for a human relationship. More niche services include
PurrfectMatch.com, SinglesWithPets.
com, LoveMeLoveMyPets.com, even
HorseLoversConnection.com and PetPeopleFishing.com.
Upon signing up, members can use
search engines to meet people in their
area, participate in chat rooms, discussion forums, message boards, e-mail, ecards and personal messaging, swap pet
accessories at flea markets and attend
events. All provide nifty, often humorous ways of connecting. Of course, all
the usual safety and etiquette guidelines
of any online dating service apply.

Are You Ready for a
Relationship?
A SELF-QUIZ
Answer the following questions by
taking an honest look at yourself,
noting those areas of strengths and
those areas that still need growth.
The greater the strengths, the more
likely it is that you are ready for a
healthy relationship. Always realize
that you are continuing to change
and grow as a result of new personal experiences.
1. Am I able to articulate my
own needs and how do I satisfy
those needs in a healthy manner
that is not dependant upon being in
a relationship?
2. Who are the people in my life that are loving, honest and
supportive when I am experiencing periods of grief and
loss as well uncomfortable growth periods?
3. What ways have I developed that demonstrate compassion for myself when deep feelings of fear, rejection and
abandonment get activated?
4. What is my understanding of what went wrong in previous relationships and my responsibility to that process?
5. What have I given up of myself in previous relationships
that may have not been in my best interest? What was
going on within me that I chose to give up parts of me?
6. Based on past relationships, have I developed a clear outline of the positive characteristics and values that I desire
in a future partner?
7. How have I dealt with the resentments and pain of relationships that have ended?
8. What ways do I demonstrate that I take care of myself in
mind, body, emotions and spirit?
9. What do I do to cultivate joy, love, creativity and gratitude in my own life?
10. What do I do to increase my own self-awareness so that I
am more fully accepting of all that I am?

From the Heart
How diet can keep your heart healthy or help you
heal after a heart attack or cardiac surgery.
I
F YOU’VE RECENTLY SURVIVED
A HEART ATTACK or had cardiac
surgery, you may feel overwhelmed
with questions about recovery—especially regarding your diet. Hope and
help are on the way: We’ve asked four
heart-health experts to weigh in on your
most pressing post-illness questions.
Find out what to eat, what to avoid, and
where to go from here.
WHICH FOODS WILL HELP
HEAL AND PROTECT MY
HEART?
Good news: You can enjoy plenty
of delicious foods, especially fruits, veg-

etables, and whole grains.
“Highly pigmented, organic fruits and vegetables are
best,” says Decker Weiss,
a naturopathic cardiologist at the Arizona Heart
Hospital in Phoenix. He
particularly recommends
dark leafy greens, carrots,
beets, and berries because
“the antioxidants, beta-carotene, and bioflavonoids
in these foods prevent cholesterol from oxidizing and
causing further damage to
the heart.” According to a
recent study, eating five or
more fruits and vegetables
every day can reduce cardiovascular disease risk by
up to 72 percent, with an
astonishing 10 percent risk
reduction for every piece
of fruit eaten daily (Nutrition Journal).
Add high-fiber foods
to your grocery list, too.
“Fiber absorbs bile, clears
toxins, and can lower
[bad] LDL and raise [good]
HDL cholesterol,” says
Weiss. He suggests stocking your pantry
with beans and legumes, which are rich
in fiber, low in fat, and cholesterol free.
Tofu and other soyfoods are also
cardiac friendly because soy’s isoflavones inhibit atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), improve vascular
function, and lower cholesterol and
triglycerides (Journal of Nutrition). And
you can still enjoy certain oils, especially olive, canola, soybean, flaxseed,
and hemp oils, which contain beneficial fatty acids; research indicates that
canola and soybean oils, in particular,
help lower cholesterol (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition).
BY CHERYL STERNMAN RULE
WHAT ABOUT FISH?
Definitely eat fish—particularly
omega-3–rich fish such as lake trout,
herring, sardines, albacore tuna, and
salmon—says Alice H. Lichtenstein,
DSc, professor at the Friedman School
of Nutrition at Tufts University. The fatty
acids in fish decrease lesion formation,
inflammation, platelet aggregation, and
triglyceride levels.
The fatty acids in fish decrease
heart lesion formation, inflammation,
and triglyceride levels.
“Those who don’t consume two
fish meals per week may want to ask
their health care provider about taking
1 gram of fish oil per day,” Lichtenstein
recommends. In one study of more than
11,000 heart attack survivors, daily
supplements equivalent to one fatty-fish
meal reduced the risk of sudden cardiac
death (Lancet). Researchers believe that
consuming fish-oil fats helps stabilize
heart muscle cells, making them more
resistant to arrhythmia.
WHICH FOODS SHOULD I
AVOID FROM NOW ON?
Sharply reduce intake of saturated
and trans fats, says M. Laurel Cutlip,
RD, author of The Cardiac Recovery
Cookbook (Hatherleigh Press). These
fats raise blood cholesterol and contribute to atherosclerosis. Avoid “fatty
meats, whole-milk products, processed
foods such as bakery items, hard margarines, shortenings, and lard,” says
Cutlip.
DO I HAVE TO WORRY
ABOUT SODIUM?
“That depends,” says New York
City–based cardiologist Will Grossman.
“Not everyone who has cardiac problems needs to restrict sodium, but those
Printed on Recycled Paper to Protect the Environment
who have high blood pressure, congestive
heart failure, or a severely damaged heart
should be especially vigilant.” Reducing
sodium reduces blood pressure, which
helps lower heart attack and stroke risk.
To go salt-free, season your food with
chopped fresh or dried herbs, spices,
lemon juice and zest, or high-quality
flavored vinegars.
CAN I CONTINUE
TO DRINK ALCOHOL?
Yes, in moderation. Alcohol can raise
HDL (good) cholesterol levels, says Grossman, which have a protective effect on the
heart. Moderate alcohol consumption has
been shown to reduce heart attack risk,
peripheral vascular disease, and sudden
cardiac death, and it inhibits the formation of dangerous arterial blood clots. “Up
to two drinks per day for a male or one for
a female is fine,” says Lichtenstein. “This
isn’t a recommendation to start drinking
but to provide limits for those who already
do.” The alcohol in wine, beer, and spirits
is equally effective, but red wine contains
added antioxidant benefits.

CAN I CONTINUE
TO EAT OUT?
Yes, with caveats. After a heart attack
or surgery, you need to become selective and assertive when dining out, says
Lichtenstein. “Identify restaurants that will
accommodate special requests, such as
making fish or chicken baked or broiled,
without added sauces, salt, or saturated
fats.” Make eating out the exception, not a
routine, says Cutlip. “Even when choosing wisely, large portion sizes can tip your
saturated fat and sodium scale for the
day.”

“Yes,” says Grossman. “The recommendations are basically the same

lonely or broken hearts would rather see February 14 deleted
from the calendar. They prefer that the Grinch stole Valentine’s Day.
Those unhappy with Cupid’s aim find a friend in bestselling self-help author, workshop leader and relationship
guru Byron Katie. Since 1986 she’s been asking questions
rather than providing answers in a way that’s changed many
lives, including her own.
Her approach to healing broken relationships can help
even in the midst of crisis.
Interviewed throughout the past 20 years by publications such as the Los Angeles Times magazine, Body & Soul,
Time Magazine, Inspiration Journal and others, Katie’s simple
message of how suffering is created and ended has spread
globally to 30 countries. The necessary
tools for her transformational method are
an open mind and a
pen and paper.
We asked Katie
about her “Work” of
answering the “Four
Questions” and the
resulting turnarounds
in perspective that can
bring about healthy
relationships. Listening
in as she thinks through
typical relationship scenarios will inevitably open new windows of thought.
Whatever our mind
believes,
it projects onto
others.
>>> You say that your most intimate relationship
is the one you have with your thoughts. Will you
elaborate?
Whatever our mind believes, it projects onto others.
When we don’t like others, what we really don’t like is
ourselves. When we like ourselves, we like everything we
project outward, and we become intimate with others rather
than separating from them.
>>> How do your books and workshops differ
from others that tell people how to find love?
If telling people how to find love really worked, then everyPrinted on Recycled Paper to Protect the Environment
one would understand. Telling hasn’t
been a successful method because the
answers are closer and more intimate.
The Four Questions that I present allow
people to search within, to find their
own answers.
A deep understanding that comes
from a place within, from what you can
trust, allows you to take ownership of
the realization. When people realize the truth for themselves, they have
confidence in it. We can learn from
teachers. But keep in mind that you are
the teacher that you have been waiting
for.
>>> How do the Four Questions,
your method of inquiry, affect
intimate relationships?
We are quick to react, judge and attack.
We believe our unkind thoughts and
don’t communicate from the heart. It
snowballs, shutting down our well-being and creativity. An attack might be
subtle and pleasantly stated. However,
on the inside we feel stressed and misunderstood.
For example, my partner doesn’t
agree with me so I attack by attempting
to make myself clearer. If I am not successful, I become frustrated and think, I
am not being listened to or understood.
Using the first of the Four Questions, I
inquire of myself. My partner doesn’t
that thought? (List any underlying
beliefs that surface, and question them later.) (f) Can you find
a peaceful reason to keep the
thought? (g) What do you get for
holding onto that belief?
4. Who would you be without
the thought? Possible follow-ups
are: (a) How would you have lived
life differently if you didn’t believe
that thought? Close your eyes
and imagine your past life without
it. (b) Imagine you are meeting
this person for the very first time
with no story. What do you see?
(c) Who are you right now, sitting
here without the thought?
understand what I’m saying. “Is that
true?’ An honest answer to this question
can level the communication field.
Adopting an open attitude of “It’s
possible that I don’t have all the information,” or “I may not fully understand
my partner’s comments,” prompts me to
ask them to repeat the question. We begin communicating on the same level.
To illustrate, let’s say that I make
a statement and someone responds, “I
don’t like what you said.” I can react
by attempting to justify and defend my
position. But working the second of
the Four Questions, “Can I absolutely
know that it’s true?”, opens up my mind
and I want more information. I instead
respond with, “What is it that you don’t
like?”
The only intelligent way to meet
the world is with an open mind and a
desire to learn. With your mate, who
triggers more reactions than anyone, it’s
challenging to maintain the most powerful position, which is as the student.
The learner listens with a great sense of
curiosity and wants feedback.
Before the work, and without the
realization that my statements weren’t
true, I might have countered my
husband’s disagreeing statements with
“You always say that” or “You don’t
care about me.” Since doing the work, I
know that I can’t know that any of those
statements are true.
>>> Some people believe “If you
love me, you’ll do what I want.”
Is that true?
That belief cuts you off from your partner and lowers self-esteem. Answering
the Third Question, “How do I react
when my mate won’t give me what
I want?” leads to observing how you
treat your partner and to recognizing
your separation scenarios. For example,
thoughts of divorce, not fixing a meal
you planned, not speaking to them for
the remainder of the day.
Finally, I ask myself, “Who would
Turn the thought around. (Example of a statement: He hurt me.)
Turn it around to the opposite
(He did not hurt me.) How is this
turnaround as true or truer? (i.e.,
How did he not hurt you? How has
he helped you?).
Turn it around to the other (I hurt
him). How is this turnaround as
true or truer? (i.e., Specifically
how have you hurt him in this situation?).
Turn it around to yourself (I hurt
me) (i.e., How have you hurt you
in this situation?).

I be without this thought?” Investigating more deeply leads to seeing that,
without that thought, I am student and
listener—not someone dishing out punishment because I didn’t get my way. I
understand that I am living out of what
others can give me, or seeing deeper
into what it will cost me if they leave.
Turned around, the opposite of
“If he loved me he would do what I
want” is “If I really loved him, I would
do what he wanted.” Oh my goodness,
that doesn’t fit so well. I stepped into
the other’s shoes and now I see myself
living as a slave. That’s not love!
Consider another turnaround. “If I
really loved me I would give me what
I want.” If I’m equating doing what I
want with love, why don’t I give it to
myself? If I am unwilling to give someone what they want, how can I expect
them to want to give to me?
I learn through such inquiry that
I attack because I am confused and
conflicted. I’m not aware of myself or I
am projecting my flawed thinking onto
someone else. I’ve fallen asleep. When
we think we are separate from another,
we are asleep.

Recall a time when your heart felt
cold and hard and you’ll recognize that
in that moment you were stuck. Your
mind was closed and entrenched in your
belief. Remember a time when your
heart was open and you’ll realize that
your mind was wide open and receptive.
Each of us is responsible for examining
what we believe in any moment and for
doing the work that allows our heart to
live its true nature, which is love.
Personalities don’t love. They want
something. Love is not giving. It’s not
doing. It’s an unconditional experience
of the heart that is always there. There is
nothing that we can think or do about it.
Our false beliefs and attack
thoughts argue with the reality of love,
costing us our awareness of presence
and “what is.” I must make it my life’s
purpose to realize that in truth, I love everyone. Until I have that knowing, there
is no rest for my mind and the ego rules.

honest with myself.
Four Questions awaken us from the
slumber that blinds us to our own lies and
deceptions. Being honest with ourselves,
we think, my goodness, who is it that I am
in relationship with?
Love, like the innate smile that rises
up unexpectedly, is always there. Unkind
thoughts about another that I am in relationship with cover up that smile. How can
I have an inherent experience of love if I
have fallen asleep, if false thoughts have
taken precedence?
>>> Why do people most often stay
together?
People stay together for comfort and security. Look at your own relationships, even
with your friends. Recognize the common
thread running through all your relationships. Reflect on what you say and do to
keep people in your life. We consistently
seek love and approval over authenticity.
Look closely and you’ll notice how you
trade your authenticity to keep people in
your life. Without love and approval what
we have or what we want is threatened. It
all comes down to me, me, me.
>>> How does your upcoming book
expand on concepts you’ve already introduced?
My new book, A Thousand Names for
Joy: Living in Harmony with the Way Things
Are, is based on my husband, Stephen
Mitchell’s, translation of the Tao Te Ching,
a 2,500 year old Taoist text. As he read
each chapter aloud, I commented on what
the wise sayings were like for me and how
my internal life lived itself out of them. A
master of translating thoughts into beautiful prose, Stephen condensed mine into
sentences that clearly captured the essence
of my meaning.
>>> Any advice for lovers as well as
singles this Valentine’s?
Open your heart and love yourself. Open
your mind. Allow your heart to live and
question any thoughts that argue with reality. For more information visit Byron Katie’s
website at TheWork.com.

organicgardeningtips
N
ow is the time to follow through on your resolution to be healthier in 2007.
Start your own organic garden and feel the difference fresh, organic vegetables can make. You don’t need a lot of space, just some careful planning and
attention. Here are some tips for a successful garden:
1
Garden “Intensively” - If you start with very fertile soil and are selective with
the plants you grow, you can get 80% of the harvest from 20% of the space.
Intensive gardening means planting close together - not in rows like a farmer
or like it says on those seed packages. Someone may say a 20’ by 20’ garden is
small, but that’s 400 square feet of soil to weed!
2
3
Plant “Successively” – Succession Planting is removing one crop when it is
finished producing and planting another one in its place. Many gardeners
will plant seeds in soil cubes or peat pots and time them so there’s never a
bare spot where weeds can grow.
Plan Smart - Think about the vegetables your family likes and only grow as
many plants as you need. Avoid the “extra squash blues” where you end
up begging your friends and neighbors to take oversized zucchinis off your
hands. Instead, plan carefully and think about what plants your family will actually eat. By only growing one zucchini plant you’ll have room for several other
varieties.
4
Plant at the Right Times - Learn the proper planting times for each vegetable.
Contrary to common belief, there is no advantage to starting early. In fact,
it can cause poor germination, rotted seeds or stunted growth. Once they’re
unhappy, your plants won’t recover and others of the same variety planted properly will quickly outgrow them.
5
Plant Seeds, Not Transplants. It’s easy to pick up those paper cup plants, but
for the same price you can buy a whole package of seeds. Most vegetables
do fine from seed. Tomatoes, peppers and eggplants are the only ones worth
buying as seedlings. Share your extra seeds with a neighbor and make a friend!

bed gardens and coaches customers on how to pick the right crops for their families. Don can be reached at 704-364-1784 or donrosenberg@gmail.com or www.

American Heart Association
Launches Start!
A program for longer life
expectancy through walking
T
he statistics are alarming. Each
year Americans suffer 1.2 million
heart attacks. Cardiovascular disease
and stroke continue to be the nation’s
No. 1 and No. 3 killers, claiming
870,000 lives per year. Furthermore,
140 million people – 66 percent of
Americans – are overweight. These
startling statistics also represent the
health and wellness of North Carolinians.
To get North Carolinians and
all Americans up and moving, the
American Heart Association has
launched Start! – a new movement to
help people improve their health by
walking. Start! encourages corporations and the workforce to promote
physical fitness and break down the
obstacles that keep them from being
physically active. The movement
focuses on walking as an activity
because it’s accessible, free and has
the lowest dropout rate of any type of
exercise.
Americans are working longer
hours than ever before. In fact, they
are working an astonishing 164 more
hours per year than 20 years ago.
More of the nation’s workforce is in
sedentary occupations, which leads to
physical inactivity and contributes to
greater risk for heart disease and stroke.
Start! is a great way for busy Americans to find the time to make a real
change for better health. Studies estimate
that adults gain two hours of life expectancy for each hour of regular exercise,
even if they don’t begin exercising until
middle age. Brisk walking for 30 minutes
a day can lower both bad cholesterol
(LDL) levels and high blood pressure.
It can also help overweight individuals
achieve and maintain weight loss and
reduce their risk of stroke.
Each year, productivity is on the rise
as workers are increasingly given more
work-place responsibilities. The American Heart Association has developed
motivational programs for individuals
and businesses to embrace a culture of
wellness to make the transition to a more
active lifestyle.

Get the Love You Want
Imago Relationship Therapy
D
o you ever find that your
partner reminds you of one
or both of your parents or the
persons who raised you?
The cornerstone of the Imago Relationship Theory is that we tend to be
attracted to a person that has both positive and negative traits of the people
who raised us.
From birth we absorb what love
feels and sounds like from our parents
and other adults who are significant
in our lives. Throughout our lives we
subconsciously look for love that feels
familiar. From this imago (Latin for
image) of familiar love we create, we
quickly learn how we need to act to get
love or approval and to feel safe. Thus,
we develop survival patterns.
For example, someone who had
a critical parent may have learned to
survive by becoming a perfectionist. Or
they may have become very rigid about
how everything and everyone needs
to be to survive. These subconscious
patterns reappear in adulthood and
we are actually working in our present
relationship to deal with issues from
the past.
KEEPING IT REAL
Imago Relationship Therapy provides powerful tools for healing and
transforming relationships. Couples
dialogue in a basic, three-step exercise
to help communicate thoughts, feelings
or experiences with the intention of being clearly heard and understood and to
hear and understand. It invites, creates,
enhances and preserves connection.
Mirroring puts the couple in a
situation where one sends or speaks,
while the other receives or listens with
undivided attention. It trains a couple
to listen to what the other person is
actually saying rather than listening to
the reactions and responses going on in
their own head.
Validation invites understanding
through careful listening. It does not
mean you agree, it merely means that
for a moment you are standing in your
partner’s awareness and from that perspective the way your partner is experiencing the issue makes sense to you.
Through empathy, a partner has
been listened to, mirrored and validated. A person can step into a partner’s
shoes and feel his or her pain, anger,
fear, appreciation or joy.
With Imago Relationship Therapy,
couples can take a marriage or relationship on the brink of a break-up and
transform it into something stronger and
more fulfilling than ever. Couples with
a good relationship can move into a
new level of connection, intimacy and
personal healing.
