MId-SHORE FAMIlY YMCA - YMCA of the Chesapeake
GROWING STRONGER TOGETHER YMCA OF THE CHESAPEAKE January-April 2013 Mid-Shore Family YMCA • Lower Shore Family YMCA • Chincoteague Family YMCA ceo’s update Over the weekend I received a letter from a college student that worked at our YMCA a few summers ago. Through her studies she has become very passionate about working in rural communities in developing countries to create sustainable water treatment programs. As much as we live our lives day to day taking fresh water for granted, many around the world aren’t so fortunate. She’s in Northern Ghana right now doing this work and I’m so proud of her efforts. There is no greater gift than the gift of helping others. It fuels the soul. That’s what I love so much about the YMCA. It was founded on the principles of helping others nearly 170 years ago and the work still carries on today. The YMCA is a place that brings people together, strengthens families, fosters friendships, develops children, builds healthy lifestyles, turns no one away, and tackles communities' needs. Simply put, the Y is not as much a place as it is a cause. Its cause driven organizations were founded to make our communities stronger, one child, one person, one family at a time. Thank you for choosing to join the Y and in turn join the cause to make our community a better place for everyone. Robbie Gill Chief Executive Officer YMCA of the Chesapeake The Y’s Mission With Christian Principles as our foundation, our mission is to foster opportunities for individuals, families, and community that strengthen healthy spirit, mind and body for all. The Y’s cause At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Every day, the Y works side by side with our neighbors to ensure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. 2 table of contents Mid-Shore Family YMCA . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5 Lower Shore Family YMCA . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .17 Chincoteague Family YMCA. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .27 Important Dates . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 35 Membership rates Membership Types MID-SHORE FAMILY YMCA ONLY General L.C. For this reason, we require anyone under the age of 18 to wear a swim band indicating their swimming ability level. A green band is issued upon successful completion of the swim test. A red band is issued to those who are shallow-water competent. Children with a red band will be permitted to swim/play in shallow water where they can readily regain their footing. Any child under 48” that is issued a red band, must be within an arm’s length of an actively attentive parent or adult caregiver who is in the water with the child. Thank you for helping us keep your child safe in our pool. Please see the lifeguard on duty or Aquatic Director for details. FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Mid-Shore Family YMCA SWIM LESSONS Make a Splash! From swim lessons to birthday parties to swim team and water fitness, you’ll find water fun at the Y! PARENT & CHILD SWIM LESSONS (ages 6 mos.-3 years) These swim lessons offer a positive, playful environment to foster the parent/child relationship through water exploration. Classes are taught by enthusiastic, caring instructors who emphasize making you and your child feel comfortable in the water. Our friendly and enthusiastic staff focuses on safety, stroke development, and personal growth for each swim level. Programs are offered throughout the week at convenient times for busy families. You will be sure to find a class to accommodate your schedule. WATER BABIES (ages 6 mos.-2 years) Water Babies is a water orientation course where moms or dads are in the water with baby for a positive, parent-child experience with acclimation to the water and learning water safety as well as beginning skills through games and songs. The YMCA objectives also help incorporate character development for use in everyday life. Strengths such as caring, honesty, faith, responsibility, and respect are character traits needed most in this world today. Member FREE 15 for social responsibilty Mid-Shore Family YMCA I received extremely nice letters from one of our great YMCA family members. After 11 years, today is Susannah’s final practice and meet as a member of the MDY Marlins, and I wanted to let you all know how much being a YMCA swim team member has meant to her and us. She started on the team the summer after first grade at the suggestion of her then swim teacher and now supervisor, Kitty Cade. As she enters her senior year in high school, she is torn by other obligations and interests, and she has decided that she will give up being a member of the team. She did not make this decision easily, especially since she barely remembers a time when she was not part of the team. We want you to know that being a MDY Marlin has paid off in so many ways. Susannah, although not a star of the team, has had the opportunity to compete against others and accomplish many goals. On some teams she may have sat the bench, but at the ”Y”, everyone swims. Thank you Marlins! Susannah has worked hard and developed many skills. She is an excellent swimmer which has allowed her to become a lifeguard and swimming teacher. Thank you Marlins! She has made life-long friendships and has been coached and mentored by many amazing adults especially Scott McIntire and Ellen Doxtater and their tremendous assistants over the years. During eleven years they have cheered with us in good times and supported us in the difficult ones: whenever we asked for help, it was always graciously given. I cannot say enough about these people and their dedication to our kids. I am in awe of what they have done for so many families. Thank you! Sincerely, Jerome Hochmuth & Beth Jones Proud parents of Susannah Jones-Hochmuth In the pool Susannah has learned about what it takes to be an athlete and to challenge herself. Out of the pool she is an excellent student, a leader, and a friend. She has developed an appreciation for setting goals, working hard, and being persistent. We see that her good habits have been supported by her time on the team and, as parents, we well understand the value of that support. Thank you Marlins. 16 It has been an honor to watch Susannah grow and mature into an incredible young adult. Susannah currently gives back to the YMCA community by coaching swim team and teaching swimming lessons. lower Shore family ymca Hours of Operation Monday-Thursday: 6am-9pm Friday: 6am-8pm Saturday: 7am-5pm Sunday: 1-5pm 410.957.9622 facebook.com: Lower Shore Family YMCA Facility Rentals (Courts, Fields, Pavilion) Need a place for indoor or outdoor practice? Demmie, 54 years old, is a long time fitness advocate and member of the YMCA. Approximately five years ago she cancelled her membership due to lack of time from traveling for her job. Her workouts began to falter. She started gaining weight, felt weak, achy and tense. Needless to say, she really missed her fitness classes at the Y. Five years later, her schedule allowed her to return to the Y. Demmie was feeling much stronger a year and a half later when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor that had been growing for approximately 20 years. The tumor was removed and she spent five days in the hospital. Next she spent two weeks with family who provided her with round-the-clock care. Eventually, she had two weeks of physical therapy. At her six-week post-surgery check-up, her surgeon told her she could begin her workouts again, at her discretion. She returned to fitness classes at the Y the following week. Demmie’s 26 surgeon informed her that she was an exception to most of his patients, having a speedy and strong recovery. She attributes this to her excellent post-surgery care and her great fitness level prior to her surgery. These combined allowed her body to heal at an accelerated rate of speed. It has now been almost three months since the surgery. Demmie tells the Y staff, “I am well on my way to a full recovery. My goal is to return to my most difficult classes (Boot Camp) in the very near future”. Demmie is grateful to the Y staff and other friends at the Y for the encouragement, friendship and support they provided while she was recovering. She notes that there is no reason any one individual cannot take care of the mind and body, at any age. Demmie is an incredible example of determination and strength of Spirit, Mind and Body! Congratulations to you, Demmie and see you in Boot Camp soon!
