SUMMARY: Aculus brewerianae n.sp, Keiferella brewerianae n.sp. and Nalepella
brewerianae n.sp. were found 2003 on Siskiyou Spruce (Picea breweriana
S.Wats) . Nalepella brewerianae n.sp. prefers upper side of needles less inferior
side or branches as a vagrant. Aculus brewerianae n.sp. and Keiferella brewerianae n.sp. settle on inferior side of needles.
Siskiyou Spruce (Picea brewerianae S.Wats.) was
not examined for eriophyoidea until now. In the
course of inventory of Siskiyou Spruce the species
Aculus brewerianae n.sp., Epitrimerus pungiscus Keifer 1962, Keiferella brewerianae n.sp. et Nalepella
brewerianae n.sp. were found in Bruchsal, Germany,
2003. KEIFER found Aculus chaitus Keifer on Norway
spruce (Picea abies L.), family Pinaceae, 1964. This
species differs from Aculus brewerianae n.sp. by
length of scapular setae, which are 152 and not 20
long, by shield design, partly obscured, median line
faintly present on rear 2/3, admedian lines complete
from sides of anterior lobe, branching with submedian lines at about 1/ 4 and becoming wider, joined by
transverse line at about 2/3. Aculus brewerianae n.sp.
has a simple shield design, with only two admedian
lines curved outwards (FIG.l). Tibia of forelegs from
1. Riidiger Domes, Kirrlacher Stral3e 3, 76646 Bruchsal Germany.
Acarologia, 2005. XLV, I : 67-76.
A. chaitus Keifer 1964 is 13, from A . brewerianae n.sp.
8 long. Anterior shield lobe has two points in A.
brewerianae n .sp., absent in A . chaitus Keifer. Both
species differ in the lengths of first-( d), second-(e) and
third (j) ventral setae and genital setae (Ja). Nalepella
brewerianae n.sp is rarely found on needle upper side
as vagrant. From April, females deposit eggs on the
side of needle bases. First nymphs occur eight days
later; males after May on needles of first annual
growth of last year; they are rarely found on May
sprouts. Epitrimerus pungiscus Keifer 1962 prefers
new annual shoots. They form great colonies with
eggs, nymphs, females and males on small lignified,
juicy branchlets of annual shoots. Epitrimerus from
Picea breweriana S.Wats. matches Epitrimerus pungiscus Keifer 1962 to a large extent except longer second
ventral setae (e) (30 vs. 21), accessory setae (hJ) (6-7
68
vs.5) and design on genital coverflap, with broad
band of basal flecks and an inwardly subapical diagonal line on each side and 8 diverging longitudinal
lines on Epitrimerus from Picea breweriana S.Wats.
Nevertheless, these mites are regarded as Epitrimerus
pungiscus Keifer 1962. Aculus brewerianae n.sp is
found on inferior side of needles.
Since KEIFER 1944 erected genus Nalepella, 15 different species of Nalepella have been identified. From
genus Picea only Nalepella halourga Keifer 1965 and
Nalepella haarlovi Boczek 1962 are known. Nalepella
haarlovi Boczek 1962 lives on Sitka Spruce (Picea
sitchensis (Bong.)Carr.), Nalepella halourga Keifer
1965 lives on Black Spruce (Picea mariana
(Mill.)B.S.P., on Colorado Spruce (Picea pungens
Engelm.) and Norway Spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.).
Nalepella haarlovi Boczek 1962 and Nalepella
halourga Keifer 1965 are distinguished from Nalepella brewerianae n.sp. because they have a 9-rayed or
10-rayed and not an 8-rayed tarsal empodium. Nalepella octonema Keifer 1966 from Abies mariesii Mast
and Nalepella neotsuga Domes 2002 from Canada
Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis L.Carr.) have only an
8-rayed tarsal empodium. But these two species differ
from Nalepella brewerianae n.sp. by length and distance of scapular setae, by shield pattern, body size,
by number of dorsal and ventral annuli, by length of
lateral c2, genital3a and accessory setae hl, length of
forelegs and hindlegs and markings on genital coverflap.
Nalepella brewerianae n.sp. has a fusiform body,
205-355 fJ. long, 90-136 fJ. wide, shield 68-85 fL long
and 90-136 fL wide, scapular setae 270-340 fL long,
78-90 fJ. apart, a striking figure on the female coverflap (FIG.5) and shield pattern with a specific structure below tubercle internal vertical seta (49-55 fJ.
long) (FIG.4), genital setae 3a 85-97 fJ.long and Gt-Gt
22-27 fJ. apart, 49-53 dorsal annuli with pointed
microtubercles, 2.5-3 fJ. apart; 104-124 ventral annuli
with small and round microtubercles, 1.5 fJ. apart;
tibia 21-24 fJ.long, with two rows on interior surface,
each containing 4 spiniform, 5-7 fJ. long thorns -like
projections, on outside surface one row with 13 small
0. 75 fJ. long thorns -like projections, which ends at
tibial seta (6-10 fJ.long) (FIG.5).
The K eiferella sp.from Picea breweriana S.Wats.,
Keiferella juniperici Boczek 1964 from Juniperus communis L. and Keiferella pieea Boczek 1969 from Picea
excelsa (Lam.)Link = Picea alba (L.) Karst all have a
7-rayed tarsal empodium. Essential taxonomic differences exist, justifying classification of these mites as
a new species. The greatest and most distinct differences exist between Keiferella juniperici Boczek 1964
and Keiferella from Picea breweriana S.Wats. Keiferella picea Boczek 1969 deviates in length of shield
(63-65 vs. 50), forelegs and hindlegs (37-39 vs. 29;
35-36 vs. 28), setae tibiales (12-15 vs. 7), tarsal solenidion (8 vs. 10), first-(d), second-(e) and third (f) setae
ventrales (40-60 vs. 30; 55-60 vs. 25; 30-60 vs. 40),
setae accessory hi (6-7 vs. 5) and setae genitales (3a)
(32-40 vs. 19), shield design differs in detail from
Keiferella brewerianae n.sp. Keiferella brewerianae
n.sp. has a slight middorsal ridge and a prominent
anterior shield lobe over gnathosoma, which is centrally slight emarginate. Scapular setae are short and
pointing up.
