GEARHEAD GAZZETTE “SO MUCH COOL STUFF…SO LITTLE TIME!! “ COST: $$ STILL FREE ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “IT’S ALL THE GEARHEAD NEWS YOU CAN USE" VOL No. 10 OCTOBER 2010 EDITOR: JIM BRANDAU ROAD RUMBLINGS… IS S UE No . 1 0 PUBLISHED: WHENEVER I CAN IT DO BUT MONTHLY MOST OF THE TIME… Well here we are into October and the Fall Season. Cool mornings and warm days around here in Middle Tn. Cant beat that for a car show or cruise nite event. October brings with it the last of some of the cruise nite activities. If you haven’t been to any this year yet, you better hustle up and catch a couple before they are gone. Speaking of Cruise Nites, the BELLEVUE Cruisers will host their last one for the season on Oct. 2nd. To go out with a bang, they are helping the US Marines with a “TOYS FOR TOTS” collection at the Cruise Nite. They are asking all the Cruisers to bring a NEW, UNWRAPPED toy to donate. You don’t have to bring one, but why wouldn’t you? Have fun at the Cruise nite and help a child have a better Christmas too. Friday Nite Cruisin in the “Boro” wraps up on Oct 1st. The last one should be HUGE if the weather is right and its looking that way. On Saturday nite Oct 2nd, the Memory Lane Cruisers in Clarksville will wrap up for the season also. Why not head up that way and have a great time there. To everyone who puts on a Cruise Nite, let me say thank you for your hard work and dedication week after week. It isn’t easy even though its fun. Please let me know how much longer your cruise nites will run, so I can clean up the Cruise Listing Section and get it more accurate. My assumption is all the cruise nites will be done at the end of October. If your’s is still going to happen, you need to let me know. The SHADES OF THE PAST SRA held their latest show at the new location at DOLLYWOOD SPALSH Mountain parking lot. From the reviews we have heard, it seems to have been a good move. Almost 2700 registered entries were on hand to have some Smokie Mountian Hot Rodding Fun. Check out some pics from Butch Pate in the Garage & Shop Scene section of this issue. Thanks Butch!! Speaking of Shades show, congrats goes out to Paul Shauck of Hot Rods &Threads fame. His killer 33 Ford, “SMOKIN BONES” got the Pete & Jakes Super Bell Axle Award/pick. This is one of those awards that a lot of people try for. It goes to a REAL Hot Rod. Talking about awards, why not head over to www.gearheadgazzette.com and click on the GALLERY button. Click on the 2010 button and then the Shades of the Past link for pictures of the various winners. Enjoy. We, all us Gearheads, recently lost 2 legends in the Hot Rodding world. Larry Alexander of the “A-Bros” fame in Detroit and Larry Watson, custom painter who created the “panel paint” style, both passed away. I have included in the back pages of this issue, some photos of cars these guys built and painted, along with some history on each one. Take a few minutes to learn more about them. They helped make the hobby/sport we enjoy today come to life years ago. They built the foundation for all of us. Do you want to have your truck in the movies? Check out the WANTED Section for more details on how to maybe be a star, or at least your truck. Don’t forget later in October, the Battlefield AACA club will be having their annual show. Once again they will be having it at the SEARS parking lot in Cool Springs Mall. Head over to the Automotive area. One of the Coolest events around is coming up. The GOODGUYS Nostalgia Nationals in Bowling Green Ky. Being held at the BEECH BEND Raceway, loads of cool cruisers, hot rods & vintage drag race cars will there for you to take in. The cooler weather always seems to make the Top Fuel guys tip the ol’ Nitro can a little more for the “Cacklefest”. The Midnight Cruisers annual Fall Color Cruise takes place later this month. Marty Crain & the gang always put on a top notch event. Ya gotta drive them though. Bring your picnic lunch and a big smile. Where they going this year? You’ll have to ride along. I know you’ll have fun when you get there. HAPPY BIRTHDAY/ANNIVERSARY goes out to HOT RODS & THREADS Full Service Hot Rod Shop. This month marks 5 years of building Hot Rods, Mighty Muscle Cars & Cool Cruisers right here in Middle Tennessee. They are going to have an open house / birthday bash on Oct 23rd. They are inviting all of you to come out and tour the shop and talk to the whole Hot Rods & Threads crew. Drinks & refreshments will be provided to ensure a good time. Bring your Hot Rod, Muscle Car, Cool Cruiser, Trick Truck, Right On Restored car or ?? when you come. The guys are going to have a few awards to hand out. October is another action packed month for all the Gearheads. Check out this issue and hit the road. Floor it and have fun!! And remember to tell em’ ya saw it in the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE!!! Jimmy B. If you would like to receive the GAZZETTE direct instead of 2nd hand, all you need to do is send me an email at gearheadgazzette@gmail.com. SATURDAY MORNING CRUISE IN’s: To all classic car fans…… I have been repeatedly asked when are we going to start up the Franklin area Cars & Coffee for 2010? My suggestion is to nd th come out for coffee twice a month, the 2 Saturday & 4 Saturday of each month starting in March. That way if you can’t make it one Saturday you don’t have to wait an entire month before there is another one. To that end I have formulated the following calendar for 2010. I thought it would be advisable to get the schedule out so people could mark their calendars and make plans to attend. Please forward the schedule to other Classic Car Fans that are not on the list. Can be seen in Christiana TN. Asking $12,000. Call Jerry at 615-289-2158 for more info. (9/10) FOR SALE: 1969 Plymouth Valiant. Car reads 32,700 miles, probably 132,700. Runs solid, don't know if the 318 was ever rebuilt or if the carb was, but it doesn't burn any oil or smoke at all. All original clean interior, only one rip in the center armrest and some on the dash. The paint is about 80% original with very little rust at all. Needs some finishing on the body to look complete. Has complete trim on the body. I have quite a few goodies from 1969 including the original broadcast sheet, original window sticker, original dealer invoice, airtemp brochure, Goodyear brochure and warranty booklet with the original owners’ info. The only original memorabilia missing is the owner’s manual, all else is there. The a/c does work and was converted to 134r by the guy I bought it from since he does a/c work. Very straight and clean mostly original car that just needs some finishing. Does run and drive fine around town. It is the 318 with a carter two barrel and more than likely is numbers matching. I put a fuel pump and filter on the car, and replaced a busted trans cooler line. I have done some tinkering on the car, I just don't have the time or the money to invest in fixing this cruiser up like she deserves. She needs a good home. I'm asking $1,200 or best offer. Sad news to report. Famed Detroit Area Customizer Larry Alexander of the "A" Brothers fame passed away on Aug 25th. Attached here is some info on Larry Alexanders life and accomplishments. He will be missed!! Larry Alexander, who with his brother Mike ran the famed Alexander Brothers car customizing shop in Detroit, died Wednesday, Aug. 25. He was 79 years old. The Alexander brothers created dozens of stylized and concept vehicles in the 1950s and '60s--for automakers and private customers--that were featured at auto shows and on the covers of national magazines. Among them was the Dodge Deora truck, which won the coveted Ridler Award at the 1967 Detroit Autorama-one of three Ridlers won by Larry and Mike Alexander. The Deora was a model for one of the original Hot Wheels cars released in 1968. Other noted cars from the Alexander Brothers include:-- The Silver Sapphire, a 1932 Ford Coupe for Clarence Catallo, which was pictured on the cover of "Little Deuce Coupe" by the Beach Boys.-- The Grasshopper, a 1931 Ford Model A pickup.-- The Victorian, a 1955 Ford Crown Victoria for Sy Gregorich.-- The Venturian, a 1956 Chevrolet for Bobby Massaron that won the brothers their first Ridler Award in 1965.-- The Alexa, a 1964 Ford Galaxie Fastback.-Top Banana, a 1923 Ford Model T that won the brothers their third Ridler award in 1969. The Alexander brothers learned their auto bodywork skills in trade school in the mid 1950s and began working in their father's garage. The business grew quickly and in 1957 the duo opened the original Alexander Brothers Custom Shop in Detroit, one of three locations the business would be based at during its history. Larry Alexander left the business in 1968 to work as a metal model maker at Ford Motor Co. The business closed in 1969 when the building on Schoolcraft Road in Detroit was razed to make way for freeway expansion. Mike Alexander went to work for Heinz Prechter at American Sunroof. Here are a few pictures of their outstanding workmanship over the years. Larry Watson: Larry Watson (July 21, 1938 - July 20, 2010) was a legendary custom painter and pinstriper. In 1955, at the age of 16 Larry began his pinstriping career. His inspiration came from watching Von Dutch striping, while sitting on his bicycle outside of Barris Kustoms in Lynwood. One day his friend Gary McNaught came by the house and asked if he would come along down to Barris Kustoms and watch Von Dutch stripe a car. Von Dutch had moved his operation uptown working out of "The Crazy Arab's" Competition Body Shop at 7201 West Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles, so instead it was Dean Jeffries doing his first striping for George Barris. The car he pinstriped was Johnny Zupan's 1949 Mercury. Larry stepped over the rope at Barris and asked Jeff where he had bought his brushes. Jeff answered "What do you want to do? Put me out of business?" At the time it was only Von Dutch and Dean Jeffries who applied what they called "Modern Striping." Larry answered that he just wanted to stripe his own car, but Jeff still wouldn't tell him. Larry went to an art store and bought some brushes, and he went to Jackson Paint Store and bought some copper paint. He spent the next two days striping his 1950 Chevrolet, the Grapevine. Once completed he drove his newly pinstriped Chevy over to the Bellflower Clock Drive-In where everybody wanted to know how the hell he could afford a Von Dutch artwork on his car. He told them he had done it himself. Nobody believed him, they even thought he had had Von Dutch sign Larry's name on the striping. Harvey Budoff called the bluff and pulled into Larry's driveway with his car one day after school. Larry finally found out where Von Dutch bought his brushes and paint. It was in a little store down on Compton Boulevard, west of Long Beach Boulevard in Compton. Harvey Budoff's 1950 Ford was the first car Larry pinstriped for a customer. After visiting the store he bought some German brushes and white 1-shot. He spent the whole day pinstriping the car. He put an eyeball on a spoon with blood dripping out of the spoon in the back of the glove box. Larry didn't tell Harvey about the artwork, but his girlfriend eventually found it. After that Larry was the hit of the drive-ins, and every time he got home from school there would be three or four cars sitting in the driveway ready to be striped. Among the most notable cars being pinstriped in [1] Larry's driveway is Duane Steck's 1954 Chevrolet - The Moonglow. Larry applied his first flame paint job on Buzzy's Ford. Von Dutch was doing crab-claw-style flames, so that's what Larry also did. Walking back and forth to get the flames symmetrical, the paint job took 6 hours. After Buzzy cruised the Clock with his newly painted Ford, other people also wanted Larry to lay flames on their cars. After painting a brand new 1956 Oldsmobile he laid in bed thinking about what he could do in order to make the job go faster, he was tired of the 6 hours work it took. Laying in his bed he hit upon the idea of using with tissue paper and a bright red china marker. That was it, after that it took only 2 hours. In 1956 Larry shot his first metallic paint job and his first scallop job. The first car he scalloped was Bob Schremp's 1954 Chevrolet. Bob had Branson Auto Body in Artesia paint his car. During the job they put a run underneath the trunk and one on the hood, so he [1] turned to Larry and asked if he could cover the runs up. Upon graduating from school in September 1957, Larry opened his first shop Watson's House of Style in north Long Beach, California on Artesia Boulevard. Larry decided that he wanted to start a new trend: customizing with paint. In order to promote his new trend, Larry bought a brand new 1958 Ford Thunderbird that he took to Barris Kustoms for some mild modifications. Bill Hines and Bill DeCarr that worked at Barris Kustoms nosed and decked the car, shaved the handles and rounded the corners. After that Larry painted the car with six coats of pearl over a fine metallic silver base. Larry didn't tint the pearl with transparent mixing black toner that eliminated the cloudiness and he thought the car turned out too bright. Larry thought the bright look made the car look way too large, so in order to fix it up, Larry taped the panel lines of the bird with 1-3/4 inch tape and shot candy [2] apple burgundy over it. With this paint job many think that Larry invented the Panel Paint Job. The Thunderbird was the first car featuring a silver pearl and candy burgundy paint job, but before he painted panels on his own car he had already paneled Zeno Stephens' 1955 Mercury. Zeno wanted something different, no scallops or flames, so Larry body paneled it. Larry painted the car in Tahitian Red and striped it in gold. After painting the car Larry never saw it again, not in a magazine, or at a car show, [1] nowhere. One day George Barris called Larry and asked if he could do some paneling on the Rod & Custom Dream Truck. Barris was just starting to paint candies, and he'd shot candy lime over silver. There were a few mistakes, so he called Larry and asked if he could cover them up with scallops in Candy Burgundy over silver metallic. In 1958, not long after painting the Rod & Custom Dream Truck George called Larry again, and asked if he could take over the paint department while he, Dean Jeffries and Bill Carr were going back east on a 2 month tour. When George called they were building a pizza parlor in front of Larry's shop, so he said ok. When Dean Jeffries returned from his trip back east, Dean and Larry were kicking ass together, knocking out three or four scallop and flame jobs a day, and pinstriping their asses off in between. After about 4 months he relocated back to his own [1] shop in Bellflower. In 1960 Larry applied his first Metalflake job on Ron Aguirre's Corvette, the X-Sonic. The X-Sonic also featured Watson's first fade paint job. As Aguirre kept modifying the car, Watson painted it six times. Between 1960 and 1966 Larry got tired of all the masking and striping, and he started doing mostly straight candies with Metalflake or Pearl tops, or Pearl bottoms with matching [2] [1] Candy tops. Larry was kicking ass working from 12 to 20 hours a day, 7 days a week. He had 5 or 6 helpers. At the peak in 1966, Larry sold the shop he had on Lakeward Boulevard in Paramount, and moved to Mexico in order to pursue an acting career with his wife. While Larry was away, two other "Watson" custom paint shops sprung up, one in Downey, and one in Burbank. When Larry returned to California in late 1966 he opened up a new shop on Artesia in Lakewood. Larry determined that he had to get his name back on the show circuit, so he decided to do something completely new for the upcoming show at the Los Angeles Sports Arena in April 1967. Larry was painting Doug Carney's 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix for the show, and decided to do a lace paint job on the car. Ha had never tried the technique before, but Von Dutch had told him about a doily that ha had on a bench in his shop. One day while cleaning up in the shop he had removed the doily, and a beautiful overspray pattern had been left on the bench. Von Dutch dug the design and painted clear all over it. While wondering about what to do with Doug's Pontiac, Larry remembered this story and decided to paint the whole side of the car using a lace pattern with Lucky Lager Double X Pattern. Many believe that custom painter Joe Andersen invented the technique as he demonstrated it in the [2] Rod & Custom March 1968 issue, one year after Larry painted Doug's Pontiac. Larry's newly painted Pontiac made its debut at the April 1967 show together with 53 other cars in the center arena of the car show, which was sponsored by the Tridents Car Club. At the same show he also had over two dozen motorcycles upstairs. At that point he figured that he couldn't get any [1] further, and he decided to sell the shop and get out of the business. Watson left the custom car scene in favor for a blossoming TV and movie acting career. He painted and striped numerous luxury or sports cars for actors, actresses, directors, producers, or casting directors to gain entree. Between 1967 and 1985 Larry ended up in 141 different shows, such as MacGyver, [3] Columbo, and Mission Impossible. In the late 1970s Larry Watson worked on a movie he wanted to produce called "The Paint Booth". Working for the movie he visited car shows handing out flyers on cars he wanted to use in the movie. For the movie Larry was looking for racers, hot rods, customs, and stocks 1956 or older. The backside of the flyer shows a print of Larry's business card. On that card he promotes his business as "Watson's Custom Auto Painting", Since 1955. His shop was located at 5576 Melrose in Hollywood. On a later business card he had changed the name to "Theatrical Auto Body", Complete Auto Painting Since 1969. The shop was still [4] located at 5576 Melrose Avenue in Hollywood. Larry retired in Apple Valley, California, and spent much time creating his private museum loaded with pictures and artifacts from his custom car and TV days. Since 2008 Larry Watson and Gene Winfield have been hosting a hot rod and custom car show at Gene Winfield's shop in the Mojave desert. The first show, called Gene Winfield and Larry Watson Custom Car and Hot Rod Gathering was held October 19, 2008. July 20, 2010 Larry Watson died after a long struggle with brain cancer. There have been countless studies done to prove it, but virtually everyone knows that spending quality time with a kid is the greatest gift you can give them. And sharing your appreciation for collector cars is a great way to nurture their interest in a hobby that you can enjoy together for many years to come.
