u Volume 2, Issue 6 o v a sh a n u i ll NQ New Quill editor! By Deux B’Ries As of the beginning of the year, your Novashan Quill has seen a few changes. From the great editors of the past, like Tianne Tennety and Otmar Mergenthaler, the Novashan Quill has hired Tannin Willenbotler as the new editor for the Novashan Quill. Tannin brings twenty five years of experience to us from serving Baron Gerhart Von Ibenherr of Gwendale as a scribe and biographer. He has been given many accolades from His Majesty, King Vallend of Nardmyr, for his skill with ink and quill. Tannin has relocated his family from Kossuth in County Peth to Yardsmuth. His wife, Perotta, stated “Yardsmuth is very quaint and charming, and the people of Novashan have made us feel very welcome in the community.” To Ye Citizens of Illverash Illverash In all wisdom and foresight, Good Prince Duncan has seen the need to strengthen the peoples of Novashan, even in this time of peace. Therefore, by noble decree, Militia training will be provided to the people in all major towns. In the town of Illverash : • At the 11th bell, before midday, Survival Training will be provided to hone and polish skills needed in wielding weaponry. • At the 3rd bell, after midday, Militia Training will be provided to further build combat skills. Price: 2 copper v February, 1008 Strange meeting in midwinter By G’nip G’nop This December last I received a strange note from a certain Raagnvalder of whom I had never heard. The letter invited me a gathering in Illverash during the cold months for the purpose of discussing various matters of “grave import that could not wait to spring.” Finding this most intriguing, I resolved to attend this meeting to hear what this unknown man had to say. Being a not very trusting sort, I hired to bodyguard to accompany me and trekked from my warm winter lodgings back to our fair town. Upon arriving in the wet melting snow, I perceived voices from Hawkstone abbey and joined the small group gathered there. It was several months agone but as best I can recollect the following people were in attendance: A tall man dressed in non-descript clothes and armor who introduced himself as Raagnvalder, a member of the Gray Order; Asa, once a baronet of Felicity, as was I (my how that title got around); my lord sir Aerecon Whiteoak; and a young, handsomely built lass called Sabiril, who is known to travel with the Ordu. This Raagnvalder spoke of signs of a coming apocalypse as read in the stars and to prevent same he asked the assembly to find information on a large variety of topics. He will pay for information or the various objects mentioned. Seeing as he is seeking people to give him knowledge on these matters it seemed most effortless to write this missive to the Quill and ask them to make it known to the masses. While many of the topics discussed maybe of interest to various individuals, none of it seemed of such import so as to roust myself from the side of the roaring fire where I had ensconced myself for the winter months. Much of the discussion seemed to involve, directly or indirectly, two groups called the Longsoldiers and the Seekers. I know little of these groups but that which I heard this evening. Apparently the Longsoldiers bind demons and artifacts which their brother order of the Seekers find. Information is sought on one Castigir possibly of the Seekers, last known to searching for something in Maelcor before the fall, also of Amoru D’Kith or his surviving relatives, if any. She may have mentioned a niece, Kalisa, living near Charbourg Keep in the Southern Anadarrian Forest. Amoru D’Kith gave the Longsoldiers a magical box used to imprison dark artifacts and evil spirits; information on this box is also sought. Among other information for which the boundless curiosity of Raagnvalder hungers is information on a number of magical objects. These include The Anvil Uraxis, upon which was forged the Cursed Sword of Cups, called Chalice by the elves. This anvil is believed… (cont. p3…) 1 The Novashan Quill ear Ye, Hear Ye! The Planting Season Approaches Approaches By Rolfe Farmer Now is the time, o’ ye of the land, to prepare ye implements and ready thy seeds. February be the month for ye farmers to be vigilant with implements of thy trade and to plan for thine planting of crops. Syrup from trees be ripe and ready for boil. Spades and plows need be sanded and oiled. Horses and oxen need be assessed and strength determined. All ye of good arm should ready thyself for the sowing, and make conversation with ye local farmer to lend a hand this season. Novashan needs good harvest this year, and we farmers must be ever vigilant to do our duty for thy crown, and thy people. 2 The Novashan Quill From the Prince Be it known to all loyal subjects of Novashan that from this time forward the Abomination known as Xandric is to be considered an Enemy of the People and is hereby sentenced to be destroyed. They are hereby sentenced to death. Anyone found knowingly giving harbor, aid, or sanctuary to these men will be named as Enemies of the People and shall be subject to there fate. By Order of Lord Sir Dar-Khan Sylvenblade Thru His Royal Highness Prince Duncan Balthazar 3 STRANGE MEETING, Cont… to be in the possession of the Elves of Atheil Lorien (whoever they are) and was recently used to forge a weapon for Jonathan Hunter, Darkheart, to be used for the destruction of the archlich Bel (boy, that went well). Speaking of Bel (not a good plan, by the way), apparently it is not clear that his final limb is gone. It was last know to be grafted to an apprentice of the Grey Order named Turang Hek, much more well known to the residents of Ilverash as our own dear Procurator Turan Ghek. Suspected living on the east coast, over the Brennad Mountains of Scotia. This wandering pest of the Grey Order is also looking for information on enchanted harp strings (numbering three) given to a Dtizerly Vittorio (whoever) by an unnamed Tommarin Lord for saving his life. Being as they are made of gold, my ears perked up, but when it was mentioned that they (or Vittorio, my notes are not clear) were last seen Mishanter, also in the duchy of Scotia, I decided it wasn’t worth the hassle. Much closer to hand, Raagnvalder seeks information on the location of Tenebron Manor (I assume the late home of Marcus, have fun there), assumed to be somewhere within a few hours walk of Ilvaresh (why this assumption, I have no idea). It contains a number of rare books and items of historical significance. The last items mentioned were the sundered pieces of the staff of the Green Witch, an item and person of which I had at least heard. This stave was once used to cure Count Chaylin of becoming one of the Dark. A piece of which was once in the possession of either Janos Farstrider (dead twice over last I heard), Deedlit (she who abandoned us in the ruins of the Tommarin capital; may the mother earth curse her forever), or Captain Sir Fredrick Lazoa, recently returned to these lands. This Raagnvalder’s thirst for knowledge about beings which inhabit the lands is … (cont. p4…) The Novashan Quill STRANGE MEETING, Cont… …no less than mine for gold. Amongst he more relevant queries is a desire for facts about the recent inhabitants of Winterfel Keep, I am sure we all would like to know, as he does, as much as possible about the Dragon, Sir Xandrick (the light sensitive), Metrion (Deathknight, Deathlord, whatever, just go away) and Metrion’s master (Face (?)). Doctor Avian might have some details. Another creature on Raagnvalder’s mind is the Dark Werewolf (is there any other kind?) and its location; various members of our population (Riley Wolf, Cale, and Kraelyn) have some ties to this creature. Raagnvalder is also willing to pay for information about a witch named Beatrice. He claims she is the one making the mud and stone constructs which have plagued the town in the recent past. She animates them using human hair, nail clippings and blood. This is seen by some as awfully close to necromancy and should be investigated. She is known to live in the swamps north of the town. Another person of interest to this member of the order (who isn’t) is a man named Richard the Sage, leader of a society called the Pentavirate which records changes in the magical laws (boy, they must be busy) of nature. He once lived in a tower near South Bay on the way to Tarn. The most interesting event that occurred was the arrival in our midst of a very disturbing, always twitching man, dressed in peasant’s garb from the town of Charr. He appeared among us with little warning, passing the barred gate of the abbey with nary a sound. He gave his name as Redfern, and proceeded to thrust his nervewracking presence into our discussions. He seemed to be known by and on fairly good terms with Raagnvalder. He confided in me that he is looking to employ someone for some very delicate work. Our host, Raagnvalder, travels quite a bit, but has made arrangements receive messages from one Reginald, a retired captain of the guard in the town of Crossroads, to whom he gave as a gift a fairly nice bastard sword he found during his wanderings. The feast soon commenced with some of the finest baked breads served with butters flavored with honey and spices. Great baskets of fruits and cheese soon followed, as well as a duo of traditional broths of leak and potato. He ends my account of fun and joy found on one winter’s solstice in Ilverash. Fresh greens were then brought, of which Blak Tuth Grin tribe did inquire of the intent of the cooks. After ensuring that the cooks intended no malice, the feast continued with many meats. The cooks, in attempt to make reparations with the tribe, did provide something that looked as if it was still alive. Feast or Famine by Farris Underhill This year’s feast was certainly an interesting gala despite the colder than normal winter. Such meats and wines and cheeses that no belly could refuse. . . From bear, venison and beef to various small game, no expense was spared. The evening began with a well-guarded hall. The guardsmen certainly did their jobs, ensuring that all guests knew the rules that had been set forth for the evening. There were gambling tables available, and spirits started to flow. The evening started with the promise of good tidings. Notable persons in attendance were Her Excellency, Baroness Dame Felicity Ashenwood of Autruche, Lord Sir Aeracon Morinar Whiteoak, Sir Darkhan Sylvanblade, Lord G'nip G'nop, Baronette Kali of Crossroads, several members of Blak Tuth Grin tribe, Juchin of Ordu, acompanied by several of the ladies of Ordu in traditional elven attire, Lady Bridget Montrose of Aladine, and several members of Silvermane. There was rumor that even the nefarious Leveer Silverleaf was in attendance, and that he had been taken into custody by Sir Nolen of the Thistle! 4 Every face appeared content, and every belly satiated. The Tuth complemented the cook staff with great bellowing trumpeted guttural roaring. Juchin commissioned portraits with himself and several ladies. The Ordu ladies engaged and treated in good conversation. It was then that a great tournament of arms commenced. Among the participants was Galin, Cassia Arrowthorne, Garth, Christopher, Draven, Morgan, and last years tourney winner, Shay of Blak Tuth. After quite a display of arms, intensified by the drums of Blak Tuth Grin, winners were declared. Winning paired weapons combat and the open bout, Garth was declared the tourney grand champion. Christopher also took winning titles in the sword and shield combat, as well as single weapon. Cassia and Draven received accolades of honor from her Excellency. Soon after, the guests began to disperse, as the drink had gotten to their heads. I was impressed with the atmosphere and the entertainment. Let us look forward to more feasts like this in the future. The Novashan Quill Trade Caravan Returns to Ilveresh By Brunwolfe Let it be known that the Blue Ring Trading Company will be making it's return to Ilveresh. Join us each and every Saturday of the festival, for a day of trade and earning. We will have goods from all over Novashan, from weapons and armor to items of an arcane nature. Bring yer silver, gold and gems. Mysterious Theft! Her Grace, Hawkwind, Upset By Phil Anderers "This theft has left us baffled, however, we will catch the criminals.", said Garrett, Captain of the Duchy Guardsmen. Early on the 23rd day of February in the year of our Great Prince, 1009, it was reported that several statues were taken from the Castle at Einselden, home to Duke Sir Kieran D'Kaylin and his wife, Duchess Briala Hawkwind. The crime was reported to the Captain by a groomsman named John Tanner. Tanner works in Her Grace's Stables. "It shocked the bejeezes outta me. They were just... gone." said Tanner. "I raised the hue and cry almost immediately while moving Her Grace's Horse to the Main Entrance." There is a substantial lack of evidence and motive. Because of this, several Duchy troops have been inquiring with magicians, sorcerers, and magic weavers within the Principality. "Their Graces are only concerned with the return of their property." said Garrett. "His Grace would be most lenient to those willing to admit to their crime. Regardless, we WILL find the criminals and bring them to justice." Civil Strife in Stormholm Anonymous It has been nearly a year since the defeat of Kalik at the hands of Ilverash, and in that time the subjects of the fallen Stormlord have faced an even greater challenge: Rebellion. Reports have come from refugees of the occupied areas of Nardmyrr, that upon the news of Kalik’s demise reaching the people of occupied Nardmyrr, most of the Orcish troops in the lands occupied by the Storm children, known as Stormholm turned on the followers of Kalik with an almost perfectly organized offensive. The attack caught the forces of the Stormlord completely off guard, costing them a great number in the first attack. The Storm Children quickly recovered and regrouped, setting against the rebel Orcs with precision, bringing the Orcish rebellion to its first stand still. fueled by the subject of writings from an Orcish personality named, Tokar, who is believed to be in captivity near Hawk’s Haven. The discussion of these writings focus on the unification of the Orcish tribes into one nation, using traditions of strength and battle combined with tactics and military strategy learned in recent years, to form a solid, strong, and unshakable existence for the Orcish people. This propaganda, mixed with the anti-Stormlord sentiment being spread by rebels, has shaken the structure of Stormholm to its core, causing the beginnings of a full blown civil war. Only time shall tell what this conflict means for Novashan and Nardmyrr. C lassifieds Lady Bridget Montrose Master Seamstress I am seeking craftsmen and women to learn the art of tailoring. Everything from your basics to the highest of court garb. Cost for lessons will vary based on current level of craftsmanship obtained. Word has spread of Hegonik returning from Novashan, and much talk has spread of Hegonik joining the rebels upon his return. Hegonik assisted Ilverash in their defeat of Kalik last summer. His assistance reduced the numbers who could have lost their lives and aided in the defeat of one of Novashan’s greatest enemies. Please seek me out in Allowen if you wish to learn. Many have pondered how the rebellion managed to organize such a successful opening. Reports have come from Occupied Nardmyrr that the Orcs are rallying under the name Cro-Kindre, or Children of Cro, and have been inspired and Looking for information regarding the individual known as the "The Black Cat"; paying well. Rhynohyde Rhynohyde Fungus Chiurugeon Phillip McKraken A strange ailment has been discovered among dwellers in the swampy regions of the Principality. Royal physicians have diagnosed many with a fungal infection identified as Rhynohyde Candida Albicans. A unique affliction which causes the victim to lose feeling in all extremities and torso areas. The infected individual displays characteristics similar to leprosy such as not being able to acknowledge injury when struck by a weapon. A particularly bizarre symptom noted is the infirm’s inability to accurately recognize the source of pain. An example may be: believing one’s leg was cut out from under them when in reality they have been skewered in the liver with a sword or pike. A cure is still being pursued, however many herbalists and healers believe cleanliness is the best prevention. In the meantime, close examination of oneself during and after any combat situation and avoidance of any carriers of this illness is advised. It is also strongly suggested that those found with the sickness be marked in such a way to aid in identification. Presidential Elections Elections for President of KGE will take place during the April 3 day event. People may nominate themselves by sending an email to secretary@kanar.org by 11:59 PM on Friday, April 11, 2008. 6 The Novashan Quill LARP Stuff made Easy Event CheckCheckIn Procedure New to Kanar? Wanting to make a great impression at the next event? Looking to update your LaRP materials? Well, read on! When a returning player shows up, they are responsible for going through five different stations, in any order. There are some things that you can do to help enhance the atmosphere of your character, your household, and your LaRP! Station 1 Attain a Character Update from the CBD staff. If no marshal is available to give a player their update, the player may still go on field with whatever skills they had at the previous event. Cover the Mundane We all have coolers, wagons, and other mundane gear that is essential for the camping experience at Kanar. You should try to hide these items by using old burlap sacks or cloth, or even get fancy and build enclosures for these items. If you are a woodsman type character, you could even cover them with branches or vines (real or fake). Stow your Smalls Everyone has small items that can detract from the game. You should try to only bring out what is necessary. Watches can be covered with bracers (or even built into bracers), cigarettes and lighters can be stowed in pouches and metal cases, and put things like keys and phone in backpacks, or even stow them with your camping gear. Shop for Period Things Sometimes, it’s all about getting the right piece for the right job. Replace your watch with an old pocket watch. Buy moccasins or boots to replace your tennis shoes. Buy or make a shirt to replace or cover that “Metallica” T-shirt. Here are some places that we can recommend for getting some of the items you might need: www.merchantswares.com, www.ebay.com, Cabelas, Gander Mountain, MI Renaissance Festival, www.larp-store.com, www.by-thesword.com, 7 Station 2 If a player’s character is involved in anything that would occur in between game events, they must check in with a Game Master or appropriate Theme Marshal before having their character walk onto the field. If the appropriate marshal isn’t available, that player may play NPC’s until such time that the marshal is found. If a player’s character is not involved in anything that would require a check in with a GM or Theme Marshal, they may skip this station. The Novashan Quill Station 3 If a player’s character made any items in between events, they must see the Economics Marshal to acquire their tags for the created items. If no marshal is available, the player may go onto the field with whatever items they owned at the end of the previous event. If a player’s did not create anything in between events, they may skip this station. Station 4 Go through the Play-Master staff to have the following things taken care of: A player must have all weapons approved for safety by a Fighter Marshal or Play-Master. If a marshal is not available, the weapon may not be brought onto the field until such time that one is found and the weapon has been checked. If a player’s character is going to be casting any spells, they must first make 2 copies of their spell list. One copy must be kept on their character at all times and available for marshals to check. A second copy must be given to a marshal on duty. If no marshal is available, the player must place the second copy of their list into the envelope that will be by the check in shed. Station 5 If a player has not paid their dues, they must do so before setting foot onto the field. If the player arrives during a time that a dues collector should be available, but for some reason isn’t, the player may play the game up until a collector is available. If the player arrives after the dues collector has finished their required time, the player may place his or her hand above their head and seek out a dues collector on the field. If the player is able to find someone to collect their dues and pays said person, they may then play the game. If the player is unable to find someone to collect their dues, that player may not play the game until a collector is available and takes their money. Players must understand that this may not be until the following day. Thank You!!! The Quicksilver Armoury Get your boffer weapons here! There are lots of different styles to choose from and if you have an idea of something send a sketch and I'll see what I can do. A big thank you goes to Darcey Schafer, long-time Quill Editor. Thanks for your hard work and dedication! Darcey has retired, and Grace Martin will assume the duties of the Quill Editor. from the Play Master The new and approved rulebook is up on the kanar.org website and is available for download. Additionally, for $5, spiral bound copies of the rulebook will be available for purchase beginning at the April event. In the meantime, please refer to the kanar.org website to familiarize yourself with the rules. For the most part, there is very little that is different from the rules we have been playing by. However, in order to better help you learn what has changed, the text highlighted in red will point out what is new. Additionally, in order to make sure everybody’s character sheets match the rules we play by, people with the follow skills need to meet with the Character Book Director to properly update your character sheet: • Armor Move (for warriors). • Any profession of a level greater than one. • If you took a free extra language at character creation. • If you used racial benefits to purchase a skill more than once (ex: an elf buying 3 resist sleeps at a discounted price each time). 8 Prices are reasonable and turn around time is quick so don't delay… Put your order in Today. Laura Messer 734-658-8288 LMesser@twmi.rr.com (Weekdays after 5:30pm, weekends anytime up till 10pm) The Novashan Quill To the members of KGE; I, Jonathan Sher, have notified the Board of Directors that I am running for the office of President of Kanar Gaming Enterprises. Here is my resume. I am happy to discuss my past successes and failings as well as the plans I hope to achieve and establish in a one year term. I feel I and many others that have given to the game in the past have been portrayed as arm chair quarterbacks both fairly and unfairly. I can not see myself returning to the game as a full time player but I can offer what I have learned from business and organizational leadership positions to KGE. My love for Kanar has never died but my priorities and ability to play has changed. I offer my effort to the Business portion of the game and look to others to lead on the field. I will not be playing a PC for the entire investiture as President. My resume follows: • BBA in Accounting from EMU • Spent 3 years at Grant Thornton in both Tax Accounting and Management Consulting • Current connections in MACPA as I train accountants for CPE credit • Successfully ran ComPeople for the last 4 years. During that time we have acquired 2 other businesses and now have over a dozen part and full-time employees. • Co-Owned a business that flourished then failed, so I am intimately familiar with the pitfalls of business. • Was a Member on the First Iron Council and several to follow. • Have held several positions with in the game. Advancements I have been involved with: • Land Acquisition • Published Rule books • The Cut • Permit Acquisition • Minted Currency • Our Incorporation • Our first off site Feast Unique Perspective: I have the good fortune to have the perspective as both a new player butting heads with the "Good ole' Boys" and being a ranking member of the same. I have been an out cast and the highest ranking Noble. I have been ostracized and lauded. I have been with the majority when we were both right & wrong and with the minority as well. I have seen Kanar grow from 20ish people to well over a 100 regular players and back down to where it is now. I have friends that I have had to deny and enemies that I have had to work with. I understand the politics of KGE from years of good and poor behavior. I have kept an ear to the game through all of this. I intend to offer my formal resignation for one year hence on the day I start. I see this as an interim position with limited and specific goals. My goals: • To strengthen three positions of the major point of contact and management(GM, PM, BLM). • To establish the responsibility of the Game Master to choose and manage his/her Staff. • To establish the responsibility of the Play Master to choose and manage his/her Staff. • To establish the responsibility of the BLM to choose and manage his/her Staff. • To establish specific goals for each and to benchmark and monitor progress. These goals shall include but not exclusive to; o GM - Create a marshal roster, create a list of "House" or "Interim" rules for the year. o Establish a streamlined check in process. o Approve or deny XP/silver incentives for volunteer work(GM, PM & BLC are excluded). o PM - Appoint a GHC. o Outsource or assign portions of the "World Book", with time for revision and approval within the year. o Create a guideline for an outsourced Rule book. o Outsource the "Rule Book", with time for revision and approval within the year. 9 The Novashan Quill o BLM -Appoint a staff. Receive well estimates. o Receive Water tank estimates and put in place a "Water" solution within the year. o Get competitive quotes for garbage removal & Porta-Johns. Research the liability of current noncompliance to code. o Research the cost of coming to compliance. Inspect all existing structures. Approve prior to establishment of any new structures. o BoD - Create a budget. Research Insurance. o Determine risk analysis of coming code compliant. Review the 3 marshal positions quarterly. o Establish SOP policies for removal at anytime with a vote of 5 OR with 2 vote of 4 not less than 2 months apart and not greater than 3 months apart OR with 3 vote of 3 not less than 2 months apart and not greater than 3 months apart (I hope to make it as hands off as possible for these 3 positions). o Discuss dues, power gap, membership and income. Positions on policy: The BoD should not directly assess specific decisions made by the 3 managing marshals. They should review them quarterly on there over all performance and not manage there individual actions & decisions. We need to establish a water source and reasonable prices for trash and porta-johns. I am open to questions on my feeling for any issue related to Kanar and KGE. Negatives: I once took a position when I was not in a mental or emotional state to handle it. (I became a GM during my divorce). I had little follow through and my only redeeming part of that was I delegated well (to Dugan) and my term was a success despite my failure. I have done many politically poor things in the past under the banner "for the Good of the Game". I like to believe I have grown in the decade between then and now and that those errors would serve me well in the future. 10
