Donnell Lewis, president/creative director of One Creative Source is a
conscientious designer who understands the importance of contributing to the
community. He is committed to the enrichment and education of today’s youth.
Donnell has partnered with the museum and performing arts community, and has
created and conducted art outreach and family programs with the National Gallery of
Art, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington
National Opera and the Sumner Museum and Archives, in Washington, D.C.
From 2009 to the present Donnell has been Chair of the D.C. Congressional Art
Competition (Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, (D-DC) Honorary Chair.
The Congressional Art Competition: An Artistic Discovery, coordinated by Members
of Congress is established to encourage and recognize the rich artistic talents of
young Americans.
“Saving Luna: Creating Sculptural Habitats”, is an example of a successful
education program which was developed out of Donnell’s collaboration with
the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and Thomson Elementary School,
Washington, D.C. The program, which uses a multidisciplinary approach to art,
was selected for presentation a the 2001 National Art and Education Conference,
New York City and the 2001 Maryland State Conference on Gifted and Talented
Learning.
Mr. Lewis is honored to be the designer and illustrator of the “Lift Every Voice” poster
created in the likeness of the famed Marian Anderson for the 1990 Decennial Census,
National Public Awareness Campaign.

The
Marian Anderson
poster project
In 1989, I was given the assignment to create a poster
which would target and motivate the African American
community and the general population, to “Answer
the 1990 Census.” In considering my approach to the
project, I realized that the 1990 Census would be the
last Census before the year 2000. I decided that the
poster should attract people in such a way so as to
educate and to motivate. I also wanted the message
communicated by the poster to have longevity, by
reflecting current and historical events.
As I began my research, I came upon a photograph of
Mrs. Anderson singing at Carnegie Hall. It seemed as
if she could be heard singing directly from the photo.
I knew right then that Mrs. Anderson should be the
focus of the poster. Not only would a poster in her
likeness be attractive, but it would also educate people
who were not aware of her accomplishments. Others
who were familiar with Mrs. Anderson, would once
again appreciate her pioneering legacy in (African-)
American history.
Thus began the creation of the Marian Anderson 1990
Census “Lift Every Voice” poster project. The poster
was formally debuted in February 1990, at the historic
Apollo Theater.

Saving Luna: Creating Sculptural Habitats
This educational partnership
program was created and conducted
by artist, Donnell Lewis and flutist,
Barbara Heitz in collaboration with
The Hirshhorn Museum, Smithsonian
Institution and Thomson Elementary
School, Washington, D.C.
The Hirshhorn Museum and
Sculpture Garden hosted
“Saving Luna: Creating
Sculptural Habitats” as part of
its “Young Artist Program for
School Groups” outreach series.
The collaborative program between
the Hirshhorn Museum and
Thomson Elementary School
was based upon the story of
Julia “Butterfly” Hill’s two-year
encampment in a California
redwood tree to draw attention to
the plight of the redwoods.
Using a multidisciplinary
approach, local fourth-grade
students cultivated their
appreciation of sculpture,
developed their understanding of
nature, and were taught how to
better advocate for their beliefs.

Saving Luna: Creating Sculptural Habitats
Students visited the Hirshhorn Museum for
their first session to discover and discuss
sculptural forms that look like shelters.
Accompanied by live flute music, they were
encouraged to note the variety of forms and
materials the sculptures used and the feelings
they evoked. The following two sessions
were conducted in the classroom, where
students continued their research about
“Butterfly” Hill and her adopted tree,
redwoods, Native Americans and their
shelters, the effects of weather on outdoor
habitats, and the creation of art or dwellings
from natural and found materials.

DC FOURTH GRADERS PRESENT PROGRAM
IN HIRSHHORN GARDEN
On Friday, April 14, from 10 to 11 a.m., a fourth
grade class from Washington’s Thomson Elementary
School will present a nature-inspired program of
sculpture, poetry and music in the Sculpture Garden
of the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum, on
the National Mall.
Working in partnership with the museum’s
education department as part of an on going outreach
program with the school, the Thomson students will
display their own natural habitat sculptures, read their
poems about nature, and sing an original song. Artist
Donnell Lewis and flautist Barbara Heitz, museumaffiliated educators who worked with the students
with teacher Margaret Chambers, will lead the
presentation.
“By creating their own sculptures, music, and
poetry about nature, “ says Heitz, “these students
are becoming aware that their creativity and caring
is vitally important for our world today and for the
future.”

Washington National Opera
Partnering with the Washington National Opera
Programs for Students & Educator. Mr. Lewis
presented Marian Anderson, Lady from South
Philadelphia. With on-site visits to 20 schools
and motivating over 300 students in the DC Public
and Charter School systems. The presentation
introduced the students and teachers in the
research development and design process that
resulted in the 1990 Decennial Census public
awareness campaign poster, Lift Every Voice.
The program gave students insight into the life
and history of Marian Anderson.
A combined experience for the students was
Opera Look-In on Mozart’s classic Don Giovanni
and The Abduction from the Seraglio, a program
designed by the Washington Opera’s education
program to introduce school students to the
magical world of opera. The students visited
The Opera House of the Kennedy Center to
witness special stage effects, musical
demonstrations by the orchestra, and a finish
with a fully staged performance of scenes from
Mozart’s Opera.
Bringing that experience back to the classroom
Mr. Lewis engaged the students to reflect on the
opera’s through art, verbal and written expression.
The students where encouraged to envision and
write there own opera, entitled Opera My Way.

“Bringing in the Green” focused on green product design. The student participants explored the
environmental impact of construction and product production as they prepare to design and build
“green” collection boxes for long –term use in the Museum’s Great Hall. Volunteer faculty members
role was in teaching participants how to examine and analyze the parameters of the project including
materials, time frame, aesthetics, and ‘build-ability.’
Volunteer faculty members were responsible for teaching technical skills and assist the student
participants in preparing their graphic presentation and final built product which was unveiled

Woodson Senior High School, Washington, DC
Music and Art Summer Camp
Great marching bands are built on teamwork.
The Woodson Senior High, music instructor
asked Mr. Lewis to assist in building and
creating a path to foster that spirit. To encourage
this principle, Mr. Lewis motivated the students
by having them convert their music classroom
into visual setting to stimulate the spirit of music
and creativity. By having the students work in
a fun and creative process gave way to carrying
this thinking into their working as a collective
group while playing music together and building
a bond and understanding that each part is
important in making a complete sound. No
summer camp is complete without a field trip.
The exhibit In the Spirit of Martin, art and
paintings inspired by the spirit of Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. and the impact the civil rights
movement had on artist and America.
This was an ideal visit to the Ripley Center
for African American Art, Smithsonian
Institution, for the campers that exhibited
the spirit of togetherness. The exhibit gave
the students a visual education lesson on
American history and how coming together
has tremendous impact in their personal lives
and in humanity.
The music and art summer camp ended with the
students receiving their reward, Marching Band
uniforms. GO WOODSON WARRIORS!

Fantasy of Flying was developed for this program
involving the visual arts, comprehension of
reading, and on-site museum activities. The
objective of the workshop was to stimulate the
imagination of campers and allow them to produce
personal works of visual art, poetry and music.
The goal of self-discovery – to dare to dream and
respond creatively.
The stimulation started with the reading of an
ancient tale, the Magic Horse, as told by the
Afghan Idries Shah. A story of a youth who
discovers how to operate a magic horse that can
take him to his heart’s desire. The discussions
about the curious and fantastic flight elements of
the story provided a context in which the campers
where able to start to soar in their own personal
imaginations to find their own “hearts desire”.
The on-site activities with our museum partners and
museum education staff of the National Gallery of
Art, Freer- Sackler Gallery of Art, Hirshhorn
Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian
Institution, the campers enhanced their acquired
knowledge of literacy work, imagination and
creativity.

INVESTIGATE
Design and develop an interactive exhibit and learning center to provide the residents and
community of Wheeler Terrace, Washington, D.C. on-site education of “Green” building principles,
innovations and how they benefit residents. A major objective of the Green Opportunities (GO)
Center is to have the residents view their involvement as a major component in the success and
future their “Green” opportunity and invoke a sense of pride in the new housing unit. Involving
the residents to become major stakeholders, communicates a level of care and commitment,
demonstrating the pride of when you own something, you care about it more.
INSIGHT
Wheeler Terrace, one of 14 crime “hotspots” in the District, is being transformed into the model
for affordable, green living standards, and will provide residents with comprehensive community
development programs, improved security and health standards.
The 116-unit apartment development will be the first in the District of Columbia to be LEED
(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), (Gold)- certified by the US Green Building
Council, as well as meet the Enterprise Community Partners’ “Green Communities” criteria. The
units will include a variety of green innovations: a geothermal heat pump, white reflecting vinyl
roofs and green appliances.
IDEA
Building the “GO” (Green Opportunities Center) brand will distinguish the center as a major fixture
of learning new, innovative green experiences and provide resources to inform the residents about
“Green” careers.
The exhibit center will incorporate a green platform that will make use of sustainable materials.
The information panels will focus on the process of installing eco-friendly materials to the units.
Information units will be inter-changeable to provide easy updates on “Green” education and
innovations across America.
IMPACT
The “GO” centers educational opportunity will prepare the at-risk youth and the under-served
residents in this community about the future of the “Green” economy. In return the center will
motivate and inspire resident participation in the “Green” movement and give residents the working
tools and knowledge to contribute to the emerging, growth of green opportunities.
