Be careful how you track it, Cause every mark will show. As January is dawning, we prepare to celebrate a great new year in 2014. With good thoughts and new ideas, this will be the best year ever for HMS employees and their families. I like the visual of a bucket of rocks. Big rocks alone do not make the bucket full. It takes little rocks and a lot of sand for a completely full bucket. So, whether you are a big rock or a piece of sand, it takes us all working together to make HMS Enterprises the best company ever. I feel so blessed to be here and I look forward to another year of answering the phone and being inspired daily by the people who call. We arrived to good deals during the Opening Sales Extravaganza, scoring exceptionally sweet deals on ceramic tile and low-end carpet at the market. All in attendance took part in the Mohawk U classes and seminars. The speakers this year were outstanding. I really feel like we learned some things to take back to our locations and make our stores better. Night two included everything Texas: BBQ, black jack playin’, line dancin‘, and even bull ridin’ . Fun was to be had by all. Winning by some. We learned that Mohawk would be sponsoring the “Big Game” on February 2nd. That’s right, you guessed it: Puppy Bowl X. We met many celebrities: Chip Wade, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, and even the new face of Mohawk: Mo the Dog. On the last night we “dudded up” and attended the Gala Dinner. Page 2 Carpet Barn Provides a Lot Blanket Drive Provides More! Under a bridge and just north of the Springfield Carpet barn store, a homeless man made his home. For years, he resided at this location; working odd jobs and collecting cans along the roadside for cash. Little was known about the man other than his kind nature. The man passed away nearly unnoticed by the world with the exception of one person: Dana. Compelled to extend her kindness, she’d stopped a few times prior to the man’s death. Then, in his passing, she decided to show respect for Lee and the other local homeless. She organized a blanket drive in the man’s honor. November 20th, Dana phoned Carpet Barn and asked Mike Press if the store could serve as a drop-off point, and he agreed. Dana posted information about the drive to her Facebook page “Single and Serving God,” where she told Lee’s story and her intentions. Within less than a week she had over 1200 new likes. The word spread really fast. Community interest prompted coverage by KY3 TV and KTTS radio. On November 23rd, the day of the drive, they aired stories both online and on the air. Carpet Barn was mentioned in each of those spots. That Saturday, the Ebenezer Fire Department volunteers were on hand, lining Highway 13 with big hand held signs directing cars into the Carpet Barn lot. The parking lot filled with strangers. Boxes filled with blankets. As a result of a few phone calls and some volunteered time by Dana and her friend Deb, a total of 62 blankets were collected. Many winter coats, gloves, hats and $125 were also donated. All in just 5 hours! “The event didn’t cost Carpet Barn a thing. Just the use of our lot. What we received was lots of media coverage as a bonus and being part of something that just felt good and right to do. We all felt good about being part of this and will do it again.” -Mike Press, Springfield Manager 60 Ways to Make Life Simple Again When we were young life was easier, right? I know sometimes it seems that way. But the truth is, life still is easy. It always will be. The only difference is we’re older, and the older we get, the more we complicate things for ourselves. You see, when we were young we saw the world through simple, hopeful eyes. We knew what we wanted and we had no biases or concealed agendas. We liked people who smiled. We avoided people who frowned. We ate when we were hungry, drank when we were thirsty, and slept when we were tired. As we grew older, our minds became gradually disillusioned by negative external influences. At some point, we began to hesitate and question our instincts. When a new obstacle or growing pain arose, we stumbled and fell down. This happened several times. Eventually we decided we didn’t want to fall again, but rather than solving the problem that caused us to fall, we avoided it all together. Continued on page 3 Page 3 Continued from Page 2 Over the course of time, we made our lives more and more difficult, and we started losing touch with who we really are and what we really need. So let’s get back to the basics, shall we? Let’s make things simple again. It’s easy. Here are 60 ways to do just that: 1.) Don’t try to read other people’s minds. Don’t make other people try to read yours. Communicate. 2.) Be polite, but don’t try to be friends with everyone around you. Instead, spend time nurturing your relationships with the people who matter most to you. 3.) Your health is your life, keep up with it. Get an annual physical check-up. 4.) Live below your means. Don’t buy stuff you don’t need. Always sleep on big purchases. 5.) Get enough sleep every night. An exhausted mind is rarely productive. 6.) Get up 30 minutes earlier so you don’t have to rush around like a mad man. That 30 minutes will help you avoid speeding tickets, tardiness, and other unnecessary headaches. 7.) Get off your high horse, talk it out, shake hands or hug, and move on. 8.) Don’t waste your time on jealously. The only person you’re competing against is yourself. 9.) Surround yourself with people who fill your gaps. Let them do the stuff they’re better at so you can do the stuff you’re better at. 10.) Organize your living space and working space. 11.) Get rid of stuff you don’t use. 12.) Ask someone if you aren’t sure. 13.) Spend a little time now learning a time-saving trick or shortcut that you can use over and over again in the future. 14.) Don’t try to please everyone. Just do what you know is right. 15.) Don’t drink alcohol or consume recreational drugs when you’re mad or sad. Take a jog instead. 16.) Be sure to pay your bills on time. 17.) Fill up your gas tank on the way home, not in the morning when you’re in a hurry. 18.) Use technology to automate tasks. Handle important two-minute tasks immediately. 19.) Relocate closer to your place of employment. 20.) Don’t steal. 21.) Always be honest with yourself and others. 22.) Say “I love you” to your loved ones as often as possible. 23.) Single-task. Do one thing at a time and give it all you got. 24.) Finish one project before you start another. 25.) Be yourself. 26.) When traveling, pack light. Don’t bring it unless you absolutely must. 27.) Clean up after yourself. Don’t put it off until later. 28.) Learn to cook, and cook. Life is not complex. We are complex. Life is simple, and the simple thing is the right thing. - Oscar Wilde 29.) Make a weekly (healthy) menu, and shop for only the items you need. 30.) Consider buying and cooking food in bulk. If you make a large portion of something on Sunday, you can eat leftovers several times during the week without spending more time cooking. 31.) Stay out of other people’s drama. And don’t needlessly create your own. 32.) Buy things with cash. 33.) Maintain your car, home, and other personal belongings you rely on. 34.) Smile often, even to complete strangers. 35.) If you hate doing it, stop it. 36.) Treat everyone with the same level of respect you would give to your grandfather and the same level of patience you would have with your baby brother. 37.) Apologize when you should. 38.) Write things down. 39.) Be curious. Don’t be scared to learn something new. 40.) Explore new ideas and opportunities often. 41.) Don’t be shy. Network with people. Meet new people. 42.) Create a budget and savings plan and stick to both of them. 43.)Don’t worry too much about what other people think about you. 44.) Spend time with nice people who are smart, driven, and likeminded. 45.) Don’t text and drive. Don’t drink and drive. 46.) Drink water when you’re thirsty. 47.) Don’t eat when you’re bored. Eat when you’re hungry. 48.) Exercise every day. Simply take a long, relaxing walk or commit 30 minutes to an at-home exercise program like the P90X workout. 49.) Let go of things you can’t change. Concentrate on things you can. 50.) Find hard work you actually enjoy doing. 51.) Realize that the harder you work, the luckier you will become. 52.) Follow your heart. Don’t waste your life fulfilling someone else’s dreams and desires. 53.) Set priorities for yourself and act accordingly. 54.) Take it slow and add up all your small victories. 55.) However good or bad a situation is now, it will change. Accept this simple fact. 56.) Excel at what you do. Otherwise you’ll just frustrate yourself. 57.) Mature, but don’t grow up too fast. 58.) Realize that you’re never quite as right as you think you are. 59.) Build something or do something that makes you proud. 60.) Make mistakes, learn from them, laugh about them, and move along. Oh, and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. They’re free and better than anything money can buy. - Written by Marc Chernoff Down to Page 4 A Company Overview HMS Business with Keith Smith Looking Back Previously 2012 ended up fairly well and it was thought that we would keep that trend going. While year end figures have not been finalized, it looks as though HMS (as a whole) took a step back for 2013 in profit and sales categories. The year started out well enough for the majority of our locations but, shenanigans by the federal government this Summer manifested itself within consumer spending. Ultimately, trickling down to our stores. Then, to our bottom line. Seems like people were fearful to let go of discretionary dollars in the home improvement sector. Consumer confidence was low and consumer dollars limited. It was hoped we’d see growth in the second half with government folly behind us, stock market gains, and gas prices dropping from their all time highs. Unfortunately, that growth never materialized and some stores actually saw the opposite! Misery loves company, though. We are not alone in this consumer spending decline. At the recent Shaw Dallas Market, I talked to a few Kansas City area retailers and their situations were very similar to ours. Everything I hear from the media (if you can believe them) says that growth is on its way. So what we need to do is be poised and ready to strike when the flooring retail environment changes for us! Looking Forward What a couple of months it has been for us here at HMS family of stores! We’ve had the fall inventories, the Employee Dinner, the Mohawk Convention, the holidays, the Shaw Dallas Market, the Surfaces Market, etc.. Although not all of us are involved in any one thing, it has made office coverage and store visits very thin. With so much activity, it is easy to take your “eye off the ball.” I know has been the case for me here! In this vein, I am rededicating myself to put more attention to store level problems, especially those stores that I am the “First point of contact” as we call it. This would be a good time for everybody at HMS to ask themselves(as I have): Are some of the lessor priority, but easier to do items, stealing time away from the important things? Those things that actually contribute to the success of your store? Am I calling back that demanding customer? Am I ordering correctly and efficiently? Am I making sure transfers are correctly wrapped and stacked for transport? These are among many other little gremlins the ones that make you want to do the easier chores first. We are very fortunate to have people at all of our stores that go the extra mile to cover customers concerns and stay on top of their game. But we all have tasks, like the ones mentioned above, that overwhelm us and cause some details to not be taken care of adequately. The worst part of these “untended gardens” is that they grow weeds. So join me in efforts to get back to the important things. Thank you for your current and future efforts! 27 Years of Service I would also like to take time to mention what most of you have heard by now: Paul Gilmore has retired from the Manager position at Derailed Commodity, Fayette. Paul has been a fixture at HMS for over 27 years, and one that will be sorely missed. Just about everybody in the company has fond feelings for him and his wife Kim. I think it is no secret that Paul has had some health issues he’s currently trying to overcome. In that, we wish him well! When Paul gets over some immediate hurdles, we would like to do something appropriate to show our appreciation of the years of dedication that Paul has given not only to HMS, but to each of us a friend. Good luck Paul, and hope to see you soon! - God Bless Some More Page 5 HMS Business The Happenings with Hank Mohawk U 6 MYTHS of Consumer Financing Dalton bound and down. Miles and I took four of HMS’s finest down to Georgia this last October for a five day comprehensive flooring training workshop. TRUTH: Even customers with high incomes are interested in Miles has been taking groups of HMS managers and salespeople down to Mohawk U for twenty years and said that this was the best group that he’d ever been around. MYTH 4: If they come back, they won’t spend much after that initial purchase. Condolences go out to Craig Crager in the passing of his mother during late December. Events on the Horizon TRUTH: Cardholders making repeat purchases spend 1.5 times as much as they did initially. MYTH 5: Offering financing won’t affect my gross sales. TRUTH: Cardholders spend 40% more than other shoppers, and 38% say their cards allow them to buy a more expensive item. Hardsurface Sales Training hosted by HMS is tentatively set for Tuesday, February 18th at Brazilton. MYTH 6: The cost of providing credit will eat up my profit. Tip This: TRUTH: On average, merchants see a 3% net margin from Do a little more than you’re paid to. Give a little more than you have to. Try a little harder than you want to. I always bring the lacking element. ags N Brags and Cruisin’ Josh manages the AMI Radio website and is a radio personality on 96.9 the KOW, but this season he did more. Josh set up the website ringbells.org. The site is the Salvation Army’s web page that organizes volunteer applications and times. Not only did he set up the site, but he also taught the staff how to use it. Not all gifts are that of things and items money can buy. Josh proved that. Page 7 Sooner Late Than Never! Laura Good, University of Oklahoma senior and daughter of Enid store manager Martin Good, got all she wanted for her birthday. Laura turned 23 and OU versed TCU on October 5th! The Sooners bagged a 20/17 victory and Laura bagged a birthday hug from OU quarterback, Blake Bell! Carpet Barn: Buncha Losers? Bon Voyage! Jan and Doug strike a cruise ship pose. The Goodalls’ ship has sailed. Jan and Doug, enjoyed hitting the high seas courtesy of HMS. At the 2012 HMS Holiday Dinner, Jan selected a Carnival Cruise during the prize drawing. Jan says, “ Thank you(HMS) so much for a wonderful trip!” Five dollars from each of the fellas pocket went into the pool. The monetary prize might not be much, but the win (or shall we say loss) will be great! Mike and his Springfield crew are doing a weight loss contest involving the store employees. Each have different reasons to participate aside from the obvious shedding of pounds: heart health, healthy blood levels, sore knees, sore backs, sore hips and taking home the prize of “Carpet Barn’s Biggest Loser.” Photos Submitted By Martin Good So... How Was Your Season? A Gift of Time & Talent I doubt it was nearly as good as this guy’s. This is 4 year old Will, grandson of Rick and Jeannie Malchow from Joplin. Not only did he bag this 10 point white tail, but a 6 point axis deer also! Josh Brennon, from AMI Radio Group and son of Brazilton store manager Doug Brennon, offered up his time and talent this holiday season. Josh Brennon as featured in the Pittsburg Sun Beginning October 15th and ending February 1st, the guys will be weighing in weekly and tracking the pounds they shed. Most weight loss will be coming from observing a better diet and exercise. Just like the show, the winner with the greatest percentage lost will be crowned as the store’s Biggest Loser. Pressure is on fellas and we look forward to seeing more of you... well, less of you. INGREDIENTS 2 cups self rising flour 1 cup milk or buttermilk 1/4 cup mayo 1 tablespoon sugar* 1 teaspoon salt* melted butter for brushing* * optional, but recommended 7 9 2 8 1 4 7 METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 450°F. Lightly grease, spray or line baking pan. 2. Combine flour, sugar, and salt in mixing bowl. 3. Cut in mayo with a fork until combined with dry ingredients. Forms a “meal-like” or grainy texture. 4. Add milk. Dough should be sticky, but not hard. Adjust with flour. Rick Banfield, Joplin -5th 5. Spoon drops onto pan about 3 inches apart. 6. Bake for 13-15 minutes, depending on your oven and preferred level of browning. 7. Brush with butter while hot. 8 3 TIPS 1. Use a level ice cream scoop to control even sizing of the biscuits and help keep your hands out of the dough. No mess biscuits! 2. Adding 1cup of shredded cheese(cheddar, jack, asagio), dried chives, and garlic powder prior to the milk will make for a nice dinner buiscuit. Think Red Lobster. Bake as above.
