MAY 2013 As I write this, I am reflecting on what our nation has been through in the last couple of weeks. It is hard to get our minds around the loss of life and the injuries that Boston and West, Texas have incurred. What is great, however, is the way our country and the individuals in this country pull together in the aftermath of these tragedies. The emotional support and the physical and financial help provided by individuals for the people directly affected is what makes us proud to be a part of this country. Our theme for the Chamber year "Takin' Care of Business" well describes the nation's resolve in supporting the families facing hardships and the Mark Thieman Chairman of the Board determination of authorities who are working to bring justice in the case of the Boston bombing. Meanwhile, the theme also describes your Chamber's focus on its members and the local economy, which is our mission. It was a celebration of business growth and achievement at April’s annual Economic Awards Luncheon held at The Venue, sponsored by AEP Texas and San Angelo Community Medical Center. Congratulations to the businesses recognized for outstanding growth in 2012: Clarion Hotel San Angelo, Data Management Incorporated/Time Clock Plus, Patriot Automation and Control, and Snider Technology; as well as special economic impact awards to Shannon Clinic and Texas Pacifico Transportation. Another great networking and social event occurred on April 23rd with Business @ Happy Hour sponsored by San Angelo Community Medical Center at West Texas Medical Associates. Also during April, the Chamber hosted enthusiastic new members at “Members and Muffins” orientation stressing member benefits for new and existing members, held another meeting regarding public transportation for ASU, convened a working meeting of the Military Affairs Committee, launched sales and pitched story ideas for the Chamber’s next magazine Portraits of San Angelo; and hosted Chamber-day for Leadership San Angelo featuring tours of exotic game and wind towers on the Mayfield Ranch, the Hummer House in Christoval, and an outstanding briefing & tour of Goodfellow Air Force Base. On top of all that, we worked with numerous businesses expanding and considering San Angelo locations, hosted a reception for micro-businesses, and continued efforts with the Cline Shale Consortium. The CVB staff continued its efforts promoting San Angelo for tourism. Chamber staff stayed very busy preparing for the Goodfellow Appreciation Day May 18 and annual Washington trip early this month. We also worked on future events including next month’s June 21-23 Showdown in San Angelo drag boat races, the Aug. 7-8 West Texas Legislative Summit, and others. Please take note of a few of the opportunities available to you in May: The May 14 monthly luncheon focuses on Angelo State University and higher education with ASU President Dr. Brian May. It is sponsored by TimeClock Plus and takes place at the CJ Davidson Center at ASU from 11:30 to 1. Please call 655-4136 ext 235 to make your $15 reservation, email brigett@sanangelo.org, or register online at www.sanangelo.org. May’s Business @ Happy Hour is hosted by the ASU Alumni Association at the LeGrand Alumni Center on Tuesday, May 28, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Be there if your name is drawn for the monthly cash drawing, which will be $1,350 if no winner is drawn at the April event. Join us for practical assistance regarding impacts of the Affordable Care Act on business at our next Business Brown Bag Lunch on May 21 from noon to 1 in the River View Room. Register by calling the Chamber 655-4136. Please sign up to volunteer and/or become a sponsor of the Goodfellow Appreciation Day scheduled Saturday, May 18, or the Showdown in San Angelo Drag Boat Races June 2123. I look forward to seeing you at many of these events. Your support is appreciated . Each month we feature a different board member perspective to better acquaint you with the men and women who serve in these leadership roles. Jamie Akin Growing up in a small town you get involved and quickly learn that teamwork is the way to get things accomplished. When I made the decision to stay in San Angelo I felt fortunate to call San Angelo home. I grew up in Rocksprings, Texas and came to San Angelo to attend Angelo State University where I received my undergraduate and masters degrees. My brother was my idol growing up, and I wanted to do everything he did, and following him to ASU was one of them. After graduation, I spent eight years working for the Standard-Times and two years working for Granite Publications traveling around the state of Texas before joining the faculty and staff at Angelo State University. I have been at the university for 3 years, and I find myself again working with a great team that believes in making impact and a difference through higher education. I have been married for five years to Chase Akin and we have a daughter, Driskell Morgan. Chase grew up in San Angelo so it has always been his home, and we both feel blessed to be here. I tried the city life once and I enjoyed the experience, but it just didn’t feel right to this small town girl. I stay involved because I believe in the great city of San Angelo and the people behind it. San Angelo is full of culture, history, talents, and most importantly, people that believe in San Angelo. While we often face challenges, it is the leadership and teamwork in this city that gets us through time after time. The generosity and hard work of the people of San Angelo make this city home for my family. My involvement started at the Chamber when I was 23 years old. The publisher at the Standard-Times signed me up for the Leadership San Angelo program, and I have stayed involved ever since. Not only do I give back to the Chamber, but the great staff at the Chamber is one of the most helpful resources and partners you can find in San Angelo. I have served on several other boards in San Angelo and I plan to continue to do so. I love being a part of a team that makes things happen for the betterment of our community.
