others will stop where they are and what they are doing on the
11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to observe two
minutes of silence in respect.
I invite everyone to take a moment to

Lest we forget.

Speak up for those who are silenced
It is hard to know what to do? What happens in
their relationship is their business, right? Will I
be meddling if I say anything or call for help?
So often the victims of domestic violence,
including children, are silenced and they do
need your help. You could be the person that makes the difference and stop the cycle
of abuse.
Come on out to
Acadia Aquatic
Centre and enjoy
a mind, body, spirit
class in the water!
Aqua Zen is a shallow water aquacize
class that offers movements inspired
by: tai chi, yoga and dance. This
Zen experience offers intervals of
slow flowing movements mixed with
invigorating faster paced movements
to keep you warm. Improve your
balance and range of motion all while
calming your nervous system. It
truly is an experience that engages
the mind, activates the body and
replenishes the spirit.
This November’s Family Violence Prevention Month campaign encourages Albertans to
call the Family Violence Info Line at (403) 310-1818 and help those affected by family
violence. The 24-hour line is toll-free, available in 170 languages and available seven days
a week.
Let’s encourage a community standard in which family violence and bullying are wrong.
Learn more about abuse, what can you do, warning signs, and where to get help.
Information & resources can be found at www.familyviolence.alberta.ca
FREE Family Nature Ramble at Ralph

Corner
The RANT
Here comes winter and there’s great
news from City Hall: the on-road
bike lanes will be a number one
priority for having snow removed.
The Third Academy presents:
Christmas Craft Fair
I love to bike when its 20 above and
the sky is blue, but I would never want to bike to work every day
just given the safety, grime, and sweat factors, let alone when it’s
20 below out or raining.
I just don’t get those good folks at City Hall, or maybe they don’t
get me, but I’m not delusional when I say that most folks prefer a
car, or transit if it’s available, over taking a bike to work in winter.
You’ve got to love these city planners who cut the number of
parking spaces in the downtown core to increase alternative
modes of transport, yet at the same time drag their feet when
it comes to supplying all corners of the City with rapid transit.
These same planners are putting the kibosh on all kinds of new
development because it doesn’t meet the ever-evolving vision
of the elected folks at City Hall; all of whom get heated parking
spaces BTW.
I’ve got news for City Hall, most of us like our cars, especially
when it’s cold out. Our cars have heated seats, cup holders, and
radios… plus for those who have the foresight, we can get winter
tires and our cars are capable of driving on those haphazardly
maintained streets of this fair city.
There’s always some individual from the Roads department who
has to get on T.V. every time we get more than a few inches of the
white stuff–to explain why the City goes into total gridlock, and why
it’s going to take three weeks and the entire snow removal budget
to clear all the streets. Or, maybe you’ll have to wait till spring… or
the best one… hope for a Chinook to turn your side street into a
skating rink (maybe we can all skate to work).
So, have a great winter everyone, and if you want to avoid those
clogged snow filled streets this winter just hop on your freezing
cold bike and head to work on a cleared road. Just wish they
had Tim Horton’s bike-through on all those paths. Oh, and does
anyone know where you can get winter tires for your bike?

many businesses, has calculated the average amount that it costs
to clear 1 KM of street. If they know how many times it will snow
in the winter months then they can predict (depending on the
price of gas and how many times it snows) what the cost of snow
removal will be for the entire year. Well, um, doesn’t that mean if
they plan for it to snow say 20 times and it snows 30 then they will
spend more than they budgeted? Doesn’t that also mean that if gas
goes up by 5 cents that they will be hugely over budget? The last
two years have been pretty light on the snow and estimators were
probably hoping that this year would be the same… With snow
before Halloween get ready for City of Calgary representative
to say they will be over budget this year. Let’s figure it out. The
2011 budget for snow removal was I think 37.5 million and snow
is removed from 7000 km of road approx. which means $5357
per km of road for the year. If the budget is based on 20 snow falls
per year then each km of Calgary getting plowed costs $267 per
snowfall. What happens if it snows 21 times instead of 20? The
amount for snow removal goes from 37 to 39.4 million, a $1.8
million difference! You can’t predict the weather accurately
so it’s difficult to predict what your budget should be for snow
removal.

The RAVE
My two gold fish are 8 years old and I’ve been changing the water
every month without fail. If I don’t, their poop makes the tank
grow algae and eventually the water becomes too toxic for them
and they would get sick and die. That is how humans treat the
earth except that no one is changing our water. We are pooping
where we live and it’s starting to catch up to us. I see the smog
over cities larger than Calgary and it makes me cringe! Is that what
we want? Do we really want to leave our great grandchildren a
poopy fish tank they either have to clean up or die? You might at
this point scoff and say “he’s a freak, that’ll never happen”. It’s
fairly likely to happen, especially with our rate of consumption of
the earth’s resources. Have you heard of the Pacific ocean garbage
pile? Google it and watch videos on you-tube, it’s disgusting.
People don’t want to change because they like the life they have
and don’t want to give up buying their toys.
Yours truly, The Raver

But I digress.
A statement from the bikecalgary blog mirrors my sentiment:
“The City of Calgary still lags behind other major Canadian and
international centers in terms of on-street facilities for cyclists. Out
of 15,000 lane kilometers of roads in Calgary, there are only 27
lane km (i.e., less than 0.2% of the total) of dedicated bike lanes,
almost all of that are paint-only bike lanes, and some are shared
with busses or only in force during rush hour.”

I for one, when I lived in Edmonton, rode my bike to and from
university in the winter time and I was always surprised at how
many bikes were chained to the racks in January. What will change
by the City announcing a bike lane priority statement? Probably
nothing. Actually that’s incorrect! People’s attitudes towards the
environment might change! While it’s true the streets in that 27
km would have been cleared first ANYWAYS because they are on
roads that normally get plowed like downtown or high traffic areas.
I salute the City of Calgary for taking a step towards recognizing
that the more people that aren’t on the road means less pollution
in the environment (aka “The fish bowl”). Because of the cities
statement 300 people in the City might actually think about riding
their bikes to work in the winter.

Responsible Gifting
Do you think a family member or
friend would benefit from having a
cat or dog in his or her life? Before
you go ahead and buy that special
someone a pet, consider a gift
certificate instead!
With the onset of winter and impending snow and
ice concerns, please consider the safety of older adults, those
with mobility issues, parents wheeling strollers or walking with
young children and our service providers.
Since cats and dogs are like people in that they all have unique
personalities and needs, we suggest that you purchase a gift
certificate from Animal &Bylaw Services. With gift certificates,
the recipients can choose a pet that they and any other
members of the household feel comfortable with. They
enable the beneficiaries to choose cats or dogs that will fit with
their lifestyle.
Potential pet owners need to find a pet that is the right size,
whose activity level and personality complements the family’s
and whose needs can be met in terms of time and costs.
All the cats and dogs for adoption at The City of Calgary
Animal Services Centre have been vet-checked, spayed or
neutered, have received their first set of vaccinations (excluding
rabies), are licensed and have a microchip . Animal & Bylaw
Services’ gift certificates come in any denomination and can
also be used for licensing fees.
If you choose to buy a gift certificate toward the purchase of
a pet elsewhere, ensure that the provider is reputable and
treats its animals humanely. There are many reliable rescue
organisations offering cats and dogs for adoption in Calgary.
For more info. on our gift certificates or adopting an animal,

I hope everyone is well as we start heading into the winter
months. The fall sitting is in full swing and it is a very exciting
time to be representing you in the Legislature. As we are
busy working for Albertans, I want to update you on some
items from Calgary-Hays.
TO THE VICTIMS OF THE MCKENZIE TOWNE FIRE
I was concerned when I first heard of the fire that
consumed a 22 unit condominium complex currently under
construction in our neighbourhood. I was deeply saddened
to hear that 14 families who had purchased units in that
building and were planning to move in over the next few
months are now left in limbo, without their treasured new
home.
I would like to commend the Calgary Fire Department for
their efforts to control and contain the blaze to minimize the
damage to surrounding properties and vehicles.
I understand the homebuilder will be working with those
families that had already purchased units.
To those directly affected by this terrible fire, I offer my
condolences. If I can be of any assistance, please contact
my constituency office at (403) 215-4380 or calgary.hays@
assembly.ab.ca.
DOUGLAS GLEN FIRE STATION OPENING
Albertans deserve the fastest response times possible
when emergencies like the McKenzie Towne fire occur.
That is why I was happy to be a part of the Douglas Glen
Fire Station Grand Opening on September 14. This station
will serve 57,000 residents in the communities of Douglas
Glen, Douglasdale, and Shepard. It will also house Calgary’s
first Fire Investigation Bay. This project is the result of a
partnership between all levels of government and will provide
the residents of our community peace of mind knowing that
emergency response will be there when they need them.
ALBERTA’S NEWEST AND LARGEST HOSPITAL
OPENS IN CALGARY
The biggest hospital in Alberta’s history is beginning to
open, with diagnostic imaging and family clinics now treating
patients. It was a pleasure for me to attend the opening of
these facilities with Premier Redford on September 6. Other
services at the South Health Campus will be phased in over
the coming months. The emergency department will open
in early 2013.
The $1.3 billion hospital is the largest in Alberta, with a
footprint that is roughly the same as the Chinook Centre
shopping mall. When fully operational, the 300-bed facility
will include a broad range of inpatient and outpatient
services, with a focus on wellness, illness prevention and
community health education. Patients, family members and
citizens are involved in the planning, delivery and evaluation
of health services.
The newly opened clinics are part of the Family Medicine
Teaching Centre, which combines family health care with
training for doctors participating in their hospital residency
program.
Alberta’s largest health care recruitment for staff and
physicians is underway and on schedule for the 180
physicians, 900 nurses and nursing support staff, 600 allied
health and support professionals and 900 facility support
staff that will work on the campus.
MY THOUGHTS ON THE PASSING OF PREMIER
LOUGHEED
As you know, Alberta’s 10th Premier, the Honourable
E. Peter Lougheed, passed on September 13 at the age
of 84. One of the most compelling reasons I made the
move west, and to Alberta, in 1981 was the opportunities
available. Peter Lougheed and his government provided the
foundation for our country, our province, and individuals
like me to grow, succeed and prosper. He was a model for
others to aspire to. I thank him for his vision, his leadership
and his dedication to the people of Canada and Alberta.
To the Lougheed family, my wife Christine, my family and I
offer our heartfelt and deepest condolences on your loss.
You are in our prayers.

52nd Street Re-Opening On September 29, 2012, I had
the pleasure of speaking at the re-opening of 52nd street along
with the Hon. Ric McIver and MP Devinder Shory after a year
of closure. With a new six-lane roadway and bridge structures
over the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks and Western Headwork
Canal, this upgraded road will help to relieve some of the traffic
congestion facing our Ward 12 residents, and offers another viable
option for motorists having to travel north/south on a regular
basis.

It is great to see that employment centers are becoming a
significant part of the new suburbs, where one can truly Live,
Work and Play. The City of Calgary realizes that the diversification
of employment centers throughout the city rather than just a
centralized location will alleviate congestion on city roads as
well as contributes to two way traffic on transit. This is another
example of the necessity for the SETWAY and better public transit
for the Southeast, so those that live in other areas of the city
commute to the employment center of Quarry Park.

Yielding to Emergency Vehicles
Time is the enemy in
any emergency. You can
help; EMS, police and fire
get to the scene quickly
and safely by following
the rules of the road. It’s
important for motorists to
understand how to safely
yield right of way to emergency vehicles with lights and siren
activated so that everyone stays safe.

What to do when an emergency vehicle
approaches with lights and siren activated
•
•
•
•
•
If you’re in the middle of an intersection when an
emergency vehicle approaches with lights and siren
activated, clear the intersection.
On a one or two lane road, motorists should move to the
right side of the road and stop. Remember to signal.
On a road with three or more lanes, motorists should
move to the nearest side of the road and stop. If driving
in the centre lane, move to the right side of the road and
stop. Remember to signal.
Come to a complete stop and wait for the emergency
vehicle to pass. Shoulder check for more emergency
vehicles (there is often more than one) before re-entering
traffic flow. Remember to signal.
Remember, emergency vehicles may need to use any
available road space to maneuver. This may include the
use of shoulders and left hand turning lanes to pass other
traffic.
While driving on the road
•
•
•
Drive defensively at all times. Be attentive to sirens of
emergency vehicles and be prepared to yield the right of
way.
It is the law for motorists to slow down to at least 60 km/
hour (unless a lower speed is posted) when driving in the
lane next to where an emergency vehicle is stopped.
Do not break the rules of the road in order to give right
of way to an emergency vehicle. This could include
proceeding through a red light or making an illegal turn.
Actions such as these jeopardize all motorists in the area.
Pg. 24 November 2012 You must be the change you wish
to see in the world. - Ghandi
•
•
Do not drive on or block the shoulder of highways if
emergency vehicles require it for access. Instead, wait for
the emergency vehicle to pass before merging safely back
in to the flow of traffic.
Always leave plenty of space between your vehicle and an
emergency vehicle in case it should stop suddenly.

Membership Shows
You Care!
If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, you can be
a Park steward. We should stress you do not have to be a
member of the Friends of Fish Creek.
Fish Creek Provincial Park is surrounded by the city of Calgary
and hosts over 3 million visitors per year. The Friends of Fish
Creek Provincial Park Society would like to offer you the
opportunity to assist Park staff in the protection and preservation
of this unique landscape. Park Watch Stewards act as educators,
ambassadors and extra eyes and ears for the Park. Park Watch
Stewards help Park visitors with questions or directions, and
assist Conservation Officers to monitor the Park.
Members are what define the
Friends of Fish Creek as an
organization and make it possible
for us to fulfill our mission “To
engage the community through education and awareness
to conserve a truly unique naturalized urban park.” Your
support allows us to offer the programs and services that help
maintain the ecological integrity of Fish Creek Provincial Park.
For many of you, this natural retreat is an extension of your
own backyard. Your support is critical to ensure that we can
continue to work with our volunteers to preserve the Park for
future generations to enjoy.
The Park Watch program was developed in response to the
increasing pressure on Fish Creek Provincial Park. The Friends
are looking for volunteers to be Park Watch Stewards starting
this Spring, and complete Park Watch and First-Aid training will
be provided.
Members receive free admission to Speaker Series
presentations, the Friends newsletter Voice of the Friends, and
discounts on courses, such as the popular Birding courses.

World Prematurity Day - November 17th
Becoming a new parent is
difficult. Becoming the new
parent of a premature baby
weeks before you were ready
to give birth, a baby who may
not survive or be born with
developmental problems that
will follow them for a lifetime,
is terrifying. Unfortunately,
however, this is a reality faced by
1 in 12 parents in Alberta, almost
4,500 families a year in our province alone.
Premature birth, or preterm birth, is the most common cause of
illness and death in newborns because premature babies are born
too soon and too small. They often require complex equipment
and longer hospital stays to care for their underdeveloped
bodies. Many of these babies have serious health problems,
such as blindness, cerebral palsy or breathing problems, or will
develop learning disabilities that result in lifelong struggle.
The causes of premature birth are very complex, possibly
including genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors. More
research is needed to discover how to predict and prevent
preterm birth, but some factors have been associated with an
increased likelihood of prematurity:
• cigarette smoking or second-hand smoke,
• violence/abuse and maternal trauma,
• pregnancy over age 35,
• acute or high levels of chronic stress, discrimination, or
anxiety,
• multiple births such as twins or triplets,
• a history of previous premature delivery,
• overweight or underweight prior to conception or poor
weight gain during pregnancy.
If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, it is
important to talk to your doctor or midwife about the risks of
preterm birth.
This November 17th, spread the word about this important
issue. For more information, visit http://www.marchofdimes.
com/mission/prematurity_wpd.html.
The All Our Babies Cohort is a research project funded by Alberta
Innovates – Health Solutions, the Alberta Children’s Hospital and
the Preterm Birth Healthy Outcomes Team (PreHOT).

Fall Back Into
Reading
Pumpkins are withering on front
stoops and piles of golden leaves
are being replaced by skiffs of
snow. As the days shorten and
the mercury dips, there are
few things more tempting than
curling up in an easy chair with a
blanket, cup of hot cocoa at your
elbow and a pile of books beside you. But with our busy lives,
it’s often hard to find that kind of time. It’s especially tough for
children, whose after-school hours are often packed with sports
and lessons.
Calgary Reads has a few suggestions to help you keep your child
engaged in reading, by using daily activities as an opportunity to
sneak in some reading.
Pg. 34 November 2012 Read store signs and road signs. Read the cereal box at the
breakfast table. Bake cookies, after reading the recipe, of
course! Keep some books in the car to read on the way to
lessons or sports. For a treat, listen to books on CD or tape.
Have a family games night and read the instructions. Read
comic books. Use internet sites like CBC Kids, Kids Reads
and Funbrain.com. And of course, have plenty of books in
your home, which you can borrow from the public and school
libraries.
You might like to try some of these books this fall:
• Awesome Autumn by Bruce Goldstone
• A Poppy Is To Remember by Heather Patterson
• Hello Snow by Hope Vestergaard
• When Winter Comes by Nancy Van Laan
• There Was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow by
Lucille Colandro
Calgary Reads helps kids learn to read. Calgary Reads’ primary
program trains volunteer tutors to work one-on-one with
struggling Grade 1 and 2 readers. If you love reading and
working with children, consider becoming a trained volunteer
tutor with Calgary Reads. Calgary Reads offers free training
sessions and tutoring is provided at no cost to families. Read

In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

M
y father and my Uncle Jimmy served in the Merchant Navy during WWII and
HMS Hood in Battle
did the Murmansk suicide run to Russia with supplies and food for the Russian
people. The waters were infested with German U-boats trying to stop these runs
and resulted in the largest number of human lives lost in the Merchant Navy. My
Uncle Alec served on the most famous battleship in the Royal Navy; the HMS
Hood, during WWII. The Hood was brought in for refuelling and repairs and Uncle
Alec was transferred to another ship. The Hood was later sunk by the Bismarck,
and there were only three survivors. My Uncle lost many friends that day. After the
Bismarck sank the Hood, Churchill and all of Britain said “SINK THE BISMARCK”.
The mighty Royal Navy put every ship available to sea to destroy the Bismarck. My
Uncle Richard served with the Seaforth Highlanders during WWII and was wounded
in Sicily. Doctors wanted to amputate his leg and he refused to allow them to do so. He is still walking on the same leg today. My
oldest son Brian served 12 years in the Royal Navy. He served on several ships, one of which was a nuclear sub, and spent three
months under the Arctic ice. ~ Robert
I
was born November, 1928 in Czechoslovakia but in 1938 Hitler changed the name of my area to Sudetenland. The war with
Germany was on and when the war was over things were very tense in my area and in 1948 at night, with my sweetheart on my
shoulders I waded across the waist deep river into West Germany. That 8 minute walk in the water was very scary. It meant death
if we were caught.
June 10, 1953 we were married in West Germany then came by ship to Canada landing in Quebec. What a dreadful trip. On that
boat I was sick for nine days and went down to 90 pounds. We took a train across Canada to Medicine Hat then another train to
Lethbridge, settling near Lethbridge where for three years I worked on a sugar beet farm.
Coal Mine in Drumheller
We then moved to the Yukon where I did hard rock mining
for silver. Then back to Alberta where I worked in the
Drumheller coal mines. They had about 100 men working
in the mines. The mine had a shaft with a cage that took you
down into the mine. The cage took only 8 men down or up at
a time. I did this underground mining during the winter, and
then we moved on to Calgary where I spent 35 years with
Consolidated Concrete.
We became Canadian citizens and 20 years after coming to Canada I went back to East Germany where I was now allowed in and
out as I was a Canadian. I was happy to be able to visit relatives who are now all gone.
We have been married for 59 years and it is sad that I had to put my darling into a Nursing Home, where I visit most days and then
sometimes go on to play bingo at Grey Eagle. The nights are very lonely as we have no children, having lost our only child through a
miscarriage. The friendly bingo players and volunteers help ease my lonely burden. ~ Ewarld Peeterschick
