Henri Deparade, born in 1951 in Halle and teaching as professor in Dresden explores the borders of painting. His agitated
compositions are a combination of lines and colours that create a scenerie of figures. As an informal figurative painter he
demonstrates his talent and the efficiency of this medium. He is interested in illustrating how abstract a realistic image can become
and on the other hand how little lines are needed to let a two- dimensional canvas seem plastic.
The conversational situation in which the characters are illustrated can be seen as a metaphor for the dialogue between different
styles and techniques. However the pictures do not merely illustrate peaceful coexistence. Often male and female are brought
together in an erotic situation that is far from coincidence: There is a constant battle between the sexes equal to that between figure
and canvas and contour and surface.
What makes Deparade´s art unique is not equal coexistence but the painful and never frictionless changes from one situation to
another. His art tries to avoid statics, nothing ever rests but is constantly moving. The figures penetrate each other, are lost in one
another and are lost on canvas to eventually reemerge and
form an independant existence.
The titles of his work are taken from Greek mythology and are reminders of a somewhat dark past in western culture. By illustrating
collective and individual obsessions he leaves room for a large range of interpretations.
