The Mission of Liberty Arts
Welcome Shannon Peterson—our
new Patient Coordinator! A native of
Hillsborough, Shannon graduated
from UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree
in Exercise Sports Medicine. Quite
the comedienne, Shannon keeps
everyone laughing with her warm,
fuzzy personality. We are lucky to
have her.
Shannon will be assisting all
surgery patients with their scheduling needs, questions and
concerns. If you have already received a surgery quote and would

appointed to The Board of
Directors at Liberty Arts,
Inc. This is a non-profit
educational sculpture studio and art
casting facility studio located in down
town Durham’s Central Park District.
The Liberty Arts’ Mission aspiration
is to transform the Triangle through
art by encouraging the creation of
studios and venues for the production

and exhibition of art focusing on the

city of Durham. The Mission works
with the city and other community organizations to place those
artworks throughout Durham. Another important aspect of The
Mission of Liberty Arts is to develop and facilitate educational
programs in the visual arts with a particular emphasis on the
learning and teaching needs of professional artists at all levels.
Dr. Finn has been creating sculptures for many years and now
his work is displayed for all to see! So join Dr. Finn at the Liberty
Arts’ Casting Facility for a public bronze pouring demonstration!

Welcome, Dr. John Soderberg
Dr. John Soderberg
A
esthetic Solutions is proud to
welcome Dr. John M. Soderberg,
our new dermatologist, to the
practice. Dr. Soderberg was handpicked by Dr. Finn and Dr. Cox. He joins
them in providing optimum patient care
while remaining the Triangle’s leading source
for cosmetic dermatology and facial plastics.
Dr. Soderberg graduated from Yale
University School of Medicine in 2004. He
finished his postgraduate training in 2008 at
Duke University where he was a resident in
the Division of Dermatology. Prior to Duke,
he spent two years at the Hospital of St.
Raphael in New Haven, Connecticut, where
he received the award of “Outstanding
Preliminary Resident.” Dr. Soderberg also
holds a Master of Public Health Degree
from Boston University and earned his
Bachelor of Science in Biological
Anthropology and Zoology from the
University of Michigan in 1995.
Dr. Soderberg’s career path has taken a
few turns on his way to becoming a
dermatologist. Upon completing his Master’s
degree in public health from Boston
University, he worked as a program director
for the Massachusetts Department of Public
Health. There he ran a study investigating the
role of environmental contaminants in breast
cancer. While this was enjoyable to him, he
found that his work was too far removed
from the patients, and realized that he really
wanted to treat people personally, and hence
became a physician.
Having grown up with a father who was
a dermatologist, dermatology seemed to be
a natural fit for Dr. Soderberg. “Often times
during medical school it was the patients
who happened to have incidental skin
findings that intrigued me the most,” says
Dr. Soderberg. “I eventually came to realize
that dermatology was the perfect
combination of patient care, age groups,
and procedures.”
Dr. Soderberg is originally from northern
Michigan but spent much time in New
England. He lives in Durham with his wife,
Kelly, and young daughter Anelise, and their
family will welcome twins, a boy and a girl, in
late summer. Kelly has a PhD in immunology
and works for the Duke Human Vaccination
Institute, helping coordinate world-wide
research efforts on HIV vaccination.
Dr. Soderberg says he and his family enjoy
the area immensely and love being so close to
the North Carolina coast. He also claims one
of his favorite things about living in North
Carolina are the “winters.” He finds them
very easy!
We are all very excited to have Dr.
Soderberg join the practice, his dermatological expertise and broad training in laser
surgery for both medical and cosmetic

current estimates show that 1 in 5 adults

adequate amounts of Vitamin D other than
through natural or artificial sun exposure,”
says Dr. Cox. “Vitamin D from food and
dietary supplements offer the same benefits
as Vitamin D obtained from UV light and is
processed the same regardless of how it
enters the body. These two alternatives to
sun exposure are available year-round and
won’t increase your risk of skin cancer or
premature aging.” So stock up on juice and

Expansion update
ecently our very own
Dr. Charles Finn was
appointed to The Board of
Directors at Liberty Arts,
Inc. This is a non-profit
educational sculpture studio and art
casting facility studio located in down
town Durham’s Central Park District.
The Liberty Arts’ mission is to
transform the Triangle through
art by encouraging the creation of
studios and venues for the production

and exhibition of art focusing on the

city of Durham. Liberty Arts works
with the city and other community organizations to place those
artworks throughout Durham. Another important aspect of
Liberty Arts is to develop and facilitate educational programs
in the visual arts with a particular emphasis on the learning and
teaching needs of professional artists at all levels.
Dr. Finn has been creating sculptures for many years and now
his work is displayed for all to see! So join Dr. Finn at the Liberty
Arts’ Casting Facility for a public bronze pouring demonstration!

Welcome, Dr. John Soderberg
Dr. John Soderberg
A
esthetic Solutions is proud to
welcome Dr. John M. Soderberg,
our new dermatologist to the
practice. Dr. Soderberg was handpicked by Dr. Finn and Dr. Cox. He joins
them in providing optimum patient care
while remaining the Triangle’s leading source
for cosmetic dermatology and facial plastics.
Dr. Soderberg graduated from Yale
University School of Medicine in 2004. He
finished his postgraduate training in 2008 at
Duke University where he was a resident in
the Division of Dermatology. Prior to Duke,
he spent two years at the Hospital of St.
Raphael in New Haven, Connecticut, where
he received the award of “Outstanding
Preliminary Resident.” Dr. Soderberg also
holds a Master of Public Health Degree
from Boston University and earned his
Bachelor of Science in Biological
Anthropology and Zoology from the
University of Michigan in 1995.
Dr. Soderberg’s career path has taken a
few turns on his way to becoming a
dermatologist. Upon completing his Master’s
degree in public health from Boston
University, he worked as a program director
for the Massachusetts Department of Public
Health. There he ran a study investigating the
role of environmental contaminants in breast
cancer. While this was enjoyable to him, he
found that his work was too far removed
from the patients, and realized that he really
wanted to treat people personally, and hence
became a physician.
Having grown up with a father who was
a dermatologist, dermatology seemed to be
a natural fit for Dr. Soderberg. “Often times
during medical school it was the patients
who happened to have incidental skin
findings that intrigued me the most,” says
Dr. Soderberg. “I eventually came to realize
that dermatology was the perfect
combination of patient care, age groups,
and procedures.”
Dr. Soderberg is originally from northern
Michigan but spent much time in New
England. He lives in Durham with his wife,
Kelly, and young daughter Anelise, and their
family will welcome twins, a boy and a girl, in
late summer. Kelly has a PhD in immunology
and works for the Duke Human Vaccination
Institute, helping coordinate world-wide
research efforts on HIV vaccination.
Dr. Soderberg says he and his family enjoy
the area immensely and love being so close to
the North Carolina coast. He also claims one
of his favorite things about living in North
Carolina are the “winters.” He finds them
very easy!
We are all very excited to have Dr.
Soderberg join the practice, his dermatological expertise and broad training in laser
surgery for both medical and cosmetic
indications will be an integral part of the
continual success of Aesthetic Solutions.
Is sunscreen keeping you
from your Vitamin D?
I
t is known that Vitamin D is essential for
bone development and maintenance and
aids in preventing osteoporosis. It is also
known that overexposure to UV radiation
can cause skin
cancer and
premature
aging. Both
Dr. Cox and
Dr. Soderberg,
along with the
American
Academy of
Dermatology
(AAD), are very
concerned that
reports
connecting the
health benefits
of Vitamin D to
unprotected ultraviolet exposure mislead
the public about the actual dangers of UV
exposure.
More than one million new cases of skin
cancer are diagnosed in the US every year.
According to the AAD the number of
diagnosed cases is increasing each year and
current estimates show that 1 in 5 adults
will get skin cancer in their lifetime.
“There are much safer ways to obtain
adequate amounts of Vitamin D other than
through natural or artificial sun exposure,”
says Dr. Cox. “Vitamin D from food and
dietary supplements offer the same benefits
as Vitamin D obtained from UV light and is
processed the same regardless of how it
enters the body. These two alternatives to
sun exposure are available year-round and
won’t increase your risk of skin cancer or
premature aging.” So stock up on juice and
milk and lather on the sunscreen!
