Generous Donations Made to Club & Rescue
A very special THANK YOU goes out to Les Zoeller
and Lisa Frantz.
Les and Lisa recently lost their beloved mal, Apollo,
to cancer and were at a loss for a way to pay tribute
to him. Les discovered that his employer would
match any donation that Les made to the charity of
his choice.
Les choose to donate to Alaskan
Malamute Rescue of Southern California and to the
Southern California Alaskan Malamute Club. His
employer did in fact match the sizeable donation
made by Les! Now, in memory of Apollo, many more
dogs can be saved through rescue and many more
owners can be educated and supported through our
club.
I know Apollo would be proud and so are we to know
such wonderful and caring people.
A very heartfelt THANK YOU to Les and Lisa from all
of us!

VICE PRESIDENT
The Specialty results are in and our successes are
posted on the website; we encourage you and your
friends to go check them out. Our club truly appreciated
all those who participated and gave of their time at this
year's Specialty. A very big "Thank You!" goes to our
Show Chairperson/Secretary, Patricia Starks, for making
things go smoothly for all. Personally, I could not have
come through with all of this year's trophies had it not
been for the many donations along with the coordinated
efforts from the Starks, Chris Weimer and Mike Trcka -Go Team! We're looking forward to having a wrap-up
party and club meeting in September, after the Summer
heat subsides a bit, to celebrate.
Looking ahead to the next event, please mark your
calendars for the upcoming Bark at the Park, for two

th,
days, October 6 and 7 this year, and please contact
Karen Ulfig about volunteering your time and assisting at
this very fun, yet educational event. Last year was a real
money-maker for our club with the canvas Pawcasso
paintings by all pup-participates. There's so much to see
and do, we really hope you'll join us sometime over that
weekend with your family.

SUMMERFEST FOLLOW-UP
MEMBERSHIP
I would like to thank everyone who helped to make our
SCAMC Annual Raffle such a wonderful success. If you
purchased raffle tickets or donated items, you helped
make it a success. We have all seen the entries at the
dog shows drop lately and our annual Specialty was no
exception. Even with a lower entry, we were able to
make well over $375.00 for our club. I also know that
would have never been possible without our club
member, Linda Hair’s generous donation of handmade
pillows, wine bottle holders and various hand-made
items. When you consider that Linda has very limited
use of her hands, yet she took the time to make us so
many items, it was just an awesome gesture. Thank you
to everyone and a special thank you to Linda!
With summer moving in on us like a blast furnace, we
have all been very busy with our lives and dog clubs tend
to take a back burner. Please try to make an effort to
support your club. We need your help and participation to
be a successful club.

The Lancaster Bark at the Park will celebrate their 20
year anniversary by having a two-day event this year.
Mark Saturday and Sunday, October 6 and 7, on your
calendar to help out at the “Pawcasso” Booth and to
bring your dog/s to enjoy the fun. We are searching for
other communities that sponsor fund raising events
similar to the Lancaster Bark at the Park. If you are
aware of any, please contact me. Lancaster’s Bark at the
Park is coming up the first
Along with t-shirts, we have alu water bottles with the
SCAMC logo and a carabiner attached for $4.00.
Now that our Club Website is back on-line, we will begin
to organize a fund raiser on “Bid-a-Card” Online auction
site for personalized playing cards . This might be a good
time to start taking some pictures of your dogs so when
you win that card of your choice, you will have the picture
ready for print….

EDUCATION
A few years ago, I met with my State Assemblyman and
Senator's local office managers to discuss mandatory
spay/neuter legislation. The manager at Assemblyman
Garrick's office and I hit it off and continues to keep in
touch. I received an e-mail from Marie a few weeks ago
notifying me that rattlesnake avoidance training was
stopped in unincorporated San Diego County.
Apparently, the animal rights people found a very old law
that says only zoos and research centers may keep
venomous snakes in the county. Of course, common
sense would interrupt that that law meant Joe citizen
could not keep venomous snakes but professionals
could. There's a contingency of us trying to get the
County to allow this very important training for our dogs. I
spoke to one of the professional rattlesnake avoidance
trainers who feels there is someone on staff of one of the
politicians who thinks this is cruel to the dogs and
snakes. Really not a surprise. My representative on the
Board of Supervisors seems to be one of the swing votes
on this issue. I have been in close contact with
Supervisor Horn's policy advisor. He told me I had given
him information that no one else had that shows why this
training is so valuable. As luck would have it, our local
media had a story that venomous snake bites in the
country have drastically increased this year especially in
California. California had an increase of venomous snake
bites of 61% in just three short months. After calling the
local news and talking to the producer of that segment, I
was told I needed to contact “The Today Show” to get the
video. Got the video and sent it to my Supervisor. I
received a nice reply that it was very helpful and to
please send them any more information I come across.
The reason why I'm sharing this with you is that it's
important for all of us to make personal contacts with our
legislators to politely and respectfully share our concerns
about dog legislation. That is how we are going to win. I
continue to write letters to local counties and
municipalities regarding harmful dog legislation. It really
helps to have the backing of the SCAMC as it makes me
For those of you who aren't members of the AMCA, I
thought I would pass along some information that was
printed in the August 2012 AMCA newsletter regarding
legislative matters. HSUS denotes $55 million to
"advocacy and public knowledge." AKC PAC only
received $6,662 in donations last year. AKC is giving all
club presidents a challenge for 2012 to raise $300 in
PAC donations from their membership. The clubs will get
recognition and a newsletter letting the clubs know how
AKC is using these funds.
AKC is also asking clubs to denote $200 to CLSF
(Canine Legislative Support Fund). There was a 350%
increase in proposed anti-dog legislation last year.
Again, I want to thank the SCAMC membership for its
continued fight against anti-dog legislation.
Good news about the CGC certification. As of January 1,
2013 CGC will become an official AKC title that can
appear on the title records and you may list CGC after
the dog's name. The fee for the title will be $20. They are
planning on grandfathering owners of dogs who are
already on record as having already earned the CGC
certificate. But, you can't apply for this until after January
1, 1013. Those planning on taking the CGC test before
January should still do so, but you may want to hold the
paper work until January when the processing will
actually start.

RESCUE
This month we have very little to report as we all wait to
hear about the Malamutes in Montana. If you can foster a
dog for us, please let us know. Everyone in the Southern
California area has always helped out and I know they

will come forward for the dogs once again. Please let us
know if you are able to help by fostering a dog and for
how long you are willing to house a dog. I believe that in
October we will be hit with at least 25 dogs all at once
and I will really need your help.
I found this story and hope you will enjoy it as much as I
did.
I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY
Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor
peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need
instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail,
not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid.
As she stopped at my kennel, I blocked her view from a
little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want
her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes
the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to
think poorly of them.
As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t
feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look
forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s
life.
Evie wasn’t quite done yet. She decided to go on and
finish her championship in style by winning Winner’s
Bitch with Judge Joe Tacker. Now, Evie is a new
Champion with an ROM title after catching up with her
champion kids.
She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds
at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up
against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips
caressed my neck; she was desperate for
companionship.
A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure
her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened
and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into
her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would
promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do
everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in
her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my
corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked
the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I
could save one.
I rescued a human today.
But … That’s not the end of the story! Best of all, Evie is
a new grandmother to her daughter, Moxie’s litter. She’s
proof that there is no stopping a SENIOR!!!

BRAGS & CRIES
From Double T
We are very pleased to report that our girl Double T’s
Evening Voyage AKA “Evie” was awarded BOS in the
SCAMC Veteran Sweepstakes by Judge Sharon Zucker.
She lost Best In Sweepstakes to her Uncle True, owned
by Tim & Nikki LaCrosse. Congratulations True! You
looked as handsome as ever.

weight pull, back packing, rough-housing with Mira, Ayla,
and Tallen, and long walks on any beach ;-)
I have a few howls that I would like to share with you.
Our boy, JeanLuc – CH Double T’s Outer Limit, was
entered at the Laramie Kennel Club shows and was
awarded BOB under Judge Mrs. Patricia Leakey Brenner
and under Judge Mrs. Jane E. Treiber. JeanLuc was
also entered at Flatirons Kennel Club show where Judge
Mr. William (Bill) Shelton, awarded him BOB. JeanLuc
went on to the Colorado Springs Kennel Club shows and
won BOB Saturday under Judge Ms. Beverly Capstick
and won BOB under Judge Mrs. Chris Walkowicz on
Sunday. But he wasn’t done winning yet as JeanLuc
entered the Working Group and WON GROUP 2 under
JUDGE MR. JOE LOBB, owner-handled all the way!
JeanLuc is now a GRAND CHAMPION after winning his
Grand Championship in 10 shows – 6 of them major
shows!!! We are very proud of JeanLuc – “The Next
Generation”!!!
We would like to thank all of the judges for their
recognition, especially Judge Mr. Joe Lobb for the Group
2 win and Judge Chris Walkowicz for JeanLuc’s Grand
Championship.
JeanLuc is also in the Top 20 Alaskan Malamute and in
All-Breed is Number 11 (Canine Chronicle – January 1,
2012 up to and including June 30, 2012).
Thank you to all my So-Cal friends who cheered when
they heard JeanLuc won Group 2. It was fun to hear
them CHEERING over the phone.
And, last but not least, we would like to thank Tina and
Tom Dunn of Double T Kennels for such a lovely boy.
ANOTHER DONATION

Sue and Ron Parody are wonderful friends of our club..
When Sue realized that she would need knee surgery,
she felt that Urban Mushing with her malamute, Monty,
might be out of the question. Sue donated her Dirt Dawg
scooter to our club. We were going to raffle it off at our
July Specialty, but we felt that there may be a better way
to use it to make our club extra funds. We are trying to
decide if a listing on E-Bay, SnoDogs, Yahoo List, Craig’s
List, or having an online raffle thru our website would be
the best way to make our club the most money. If you
have any suggestions or are willing to help us list the
scooter, please contact Tina Dunn as this will be
discussed at our next meeting.
