Milhous Family Finds Comfort, Stability During Stay
by Michelle Crawley
“For the past seven months, this House has been a source of comfort and
stability for my family, a home away from home, a family away from
family.” – Heidi Milhous
For families traveling to Cincinnati
Children’s Hospital Medical Center for
world-class care, “normal” life is uprooted
and sacrifices are made to do whatever it
takes to save their child’s life.
Dave and Heidi Milhous of Akron know this. In
November 2008, their oldest daughter Hannah, age
three, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.
Hannah underwent five rounds of chemotherapy
in Akron and was in remission for only six months
when her cancer returned in December 2009. She
had two more rounds of chemotherapy before the
family came to Cincinnati Children’s in April for a
bone marrow transplant.
The family settled in at our Ronald McDonald House
within days of their arrival in Cincinnati. During their
stay, Dave Milhous underwent a grueling schedule to
balance work in Akron with time in Cincinnati. He
would work seven 13-hour days to have seven days
off. While he was working, Hannah’s siblings, Sydney

(now 18 months) and Camryn (now 3 years),
would live with Heidi’s mom in Pennsylvania.
When Dave would finish the work week, Heidi’s
mom would drive the girls to Akron. Dave and
the girls would then drive down to Cincinnati,
joining Heidi and Hannah. They would stay the
week at Ronald McDonald House before Dave
would drive five hours to Heidi’s mom’s house
in Pa., dropping off Sydney and Camryn. Dave
would then drive another two hours to Akron
for his work week. This commute continued for
seven months until Hannah was discharged on
October 27.
Most people can’t imagine the full impact that
having a sick child has on a family. Of course there is
the terror and uncertainty that comes with the illness
itself, and then navigating through the treatment
options and medical bills.
What will Christmas be like away from home? . ...................2
Along with an incredible amount of support
from family and friends, Heidi says they also
appreciated the volunteers and staff at the
House, who welcomed them with open arms. This
kindness and hospitality really helped the family through
their ordeal.
“Everyone at Ronald McDonald House had such big
hearts. They took care of everything you can think of,”
she says. “Of course we loved the home-cooked meals
every day, and they really treated us like family. It also
helped ease the financial strain on our family, as staying
in a hotel would have been such a burden. If we didn’t
have this place, I honestly don’t know what we would have
done. The House provided comfort and stability, and our
girls enjoyed being here.”
By making Hannah’s treatment the family’s focus for
all of those months, and by relying on their faith and
support from others, the Milhous family was able to put
their emotions aside and endure the sacrifices that come
with having a sick child. Today Hannah is a cancer-free
five-year-old. The Milhous family celebrated the holidays
at home in Akron, feeling truly blessed.
“We will never forget what the Ronald McDonald House
of Cincinnati has done for our family.”
“If we didn’t have this place, I honestly don’t
know what we would have done. The House
provided comfort and stability, and our girls
enjoyed being here.”

choose up to six gifts for each
of their children. Our staff and
volunteers set up a mini store here in the House, and parents
“shopped” for each of their children without having to leave their child’s side or worry
about the cost of presents. Volunteers then wrapped the gifts, and they all appeared
outside each guest family’s door (along with presents for Mom and Dad) on Christmas
Eve. For many, there would have been no gifts on Christmas morning without your
support.
Share a Night 2010
Each year we ask you to share a night with a Ronald McDonald
House family by making a gift of $25, and you generously respond.
We celebrated Share a Night’s total of $155,713 on December 6
at our annual Share a Night Open House, presented by Macy’s
Foundation. With a countdown from all in attendance, the lights
came on and filled the House with holiday cheer. Guest families,
supporters, staff and volunteers enjoyed Christmas carols from
the School for Creative and Performing Arts’ second graders, Nancy’s Hallmark’s train
display, House tours, refreshments and visits from Santa and Ronald McDonald.

and home-cooked sides, dishes and desserts.
Etta and her family serve Christmas Eve
dinner every year at our House in loving
memory of her son Jeff, who passed away in
March 1989 from Hodgkin’s disease. “It’s
our family’s way of celebrating Christmas. By
‘paying back’ what was done for us when Jeff
was hospitalized, it feels like Jeff is still with
us, touching lives. We love seeing the families
laughing and having a good time,” said Etta.

• You helped care for 1,219
families from 38 Ohio cities, 48
states and 27 countries.
• The average length of stay at our
House is 23 days, but we serve a
number of families who live at
our House for months.
• We are full every night with an
average wait list of 30 families.
We had to turn away 853 families
last year due to a lack of space.

• The average cost of caring for
one family for one day is $90,
but we only ask families to make
a donation of $25 per day. On
average, our families are able to
contribute $11.24 per day (which
includes third-party payments).
• Thanks to your support, no
family is ever turned away due to
an inability to contribute to the
cost of their stay.
• You and other generous
volunteers provided families with
723 home-cooked meals and 566
activities in 2010.

Cincinnati – This is Your House
Your support keeps our doors open
While Ronald McDonald House is grateful for our strong partnerships, our House
is neither owned nor fully funded by McDonald’s or Cincinnati Children’s Hospital
Medical Center. We do not receive any governmental funding, and we are not a United
Way agency. Approximately 87% of our operating revenue is provided by you and other
generous individuals, corporations and foundations in our community.
Without our House, families would usually sleep in the hospital lobby, their child’s
hospital room or even their cars, as most families cannot afford a hotel for weeks or
months – especially under the financial stress of mounting medical bills. Your support
allows us to care for families regardless of their ability to pay.
Thank you, Cincinnati, for keeping 1,219 families together last year at a time when it
mattered most.

Co-chairs Chrissie Blatt and Daphne Jurgensen and their talented and tireless committee
made sure our guests were treated to a beautiful and magical event. The evening featured
a message from Cincinnati Bengal Dhani Jones, dinner, dancing to KellyRed and the
Hammerheads, and a surprised Bob Anning as three of his grandchildren presented him with
the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mary Elizabeth Cobb and Iva Lou Yoder:
A Lasting Friendship - A Legacy of Caring
Mary Elizabeth (“Betty”) Cobb and Iva Lou (“Babe”) Yoder met in nursing
school just after World War II. They then worked together at Cincinnati
Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Their friendship and their careers –
Betty in the E.R. and Babe in the O.R. – would span a lifetime. Even though
Betty and Babe have since both passed away, Betty’s care for children, for
others and for her best friend continue to live on.
Betty’s life began with many struggles in her native Covington. She put
herself through nursing school and would even walk over the bridge from
Latonia to save on bus fare. Financial hardship left an indelible mark on
Betty and made her keenly sensitive to caring for others in need.
Neither Betty, nor Babe, ever married. They were like sisters – they were
“family.” To honor this deep bond and because she was older, Betty made
specific provisions in her will and trust to help support Babe through the
end of Babe’s life.
Betty also made bequests to several causes important to her, including
our Ronald McDonald House. Her career at Cincinnati Children’s brought
her face to face, every day, with families struggling to cope with the emotional
6
and financial burdens of a sick child. She was greatly comforted to know that
many out-of-town parents would be well cared for at Cincinnati’s Ronald
McDonald House.
In making her estate plans, Betty wished both to take care of Babe and to
take care of the causes dear to her. Her plan included charitable gifts at two
separate times. A portion of the gifts to charity were made immediately upon
her death in 2001, and the remainder was distributed upon Babe’s passing
in late 2010. Betty’s generous planned gift in 2001 helped us expand from a
21-bedroom House to a 48-bedroom House. Her trust’s recent gift in 2010
will now help us continue to provide health, hope and a “home away from
home” for 78 families each day.
Just as Betty Cobb chose to do, you, too, can make a lasting difference.
Wills, life insurance policies and retirement plans all provide easy ways for
you to care for your loved ones and ensure that our House remains open to
care for families for generations to come.

Giving Tracy Monroe at tmonroe@rmhouse.org or (513) 636-9703.
Winter 2011
Thank
You
from our Executive Director
Dear Friends:
For many reasons, 2010 was a year to remember. In addition to providing
health and hope for over 1,200 families, this was the year when we reached
our goal of having 78 sponsors for 78 rooms!
Our room sponsor program invites friends to adopt a room – and all
the families who call it “home” – for gifts of $3,000 (small room), $5,000
(medium room) or $10,000 (long-term suite).
On December 29, our generous volunteers reached their goal of raising
$10,000 to adopt the final unsponsored room in our House. Our very first
Volunteer Annual Fund was led by our beloved volunteer Don Freed, who
asked his fellow volunteers to join him in adopting a long-term suite.
Our 375 Guest Services Volunteers devote over 26,000 hours of service
each year to our House. As Don explains: “We are greeters, housekeepers,
communicators, creators, handymen/women. Just as we do at our own
houses, we do it all. Overlaying all of this is the heart we have for the families
we serve.”
We are truly grateful to our 40 annual room sponsors who renewed their
support and to our 38 new room sponsors who adopted a room for the
first time this past year. As a room sponsor, you provide more than just a
room – you help underwrite the cost of providing our guest families with
a good night’s sleep, home-cooked meals and the ongoing support from
caring volunteers, staff and other families with ill children who share the
same hopes and fears.
Rooms become available each year for adoption. If you are interested
in our Annual Room Sponsorship Program or our new Adopt a Family
Program, please contact Development Director Jill Miller at (513) 636-9679
or jmiller@rmhouse.org.
From our families to yours, we wish
you much health and happiness in the
new year.
Fondly,
Jennifer Goodin
Executive Director
NOW is the best time
to give. Why? Your gift
automatically DOUBLES!
Adopt a family and double the
impact of your gift
The H.B., E.W., and F.R. Luther Foundation, a long-time
supporter of our House, has generously offered to match each
“Adopt a Family” gift dollar-for-dollar up to a total of $100,000
through December 31. You can help us bridge the gap between
what our guest families are able to contribute (about $11/day)
and the total cost of caring for a long-term family ($90/day) when
you make a gift of $3,000 to adopt one long-term family, $5,000 to
adopt two long-term families or $10,000 to adopt three long-term
families.
We Need You
More than half of the 78 families who live at our Ronald
McDonald House are long-term patients. The goal of our program
is to provide each long-term family in need of supportive housing
with a comfortable bedroom and all the comforts of home – plus
a local support network – so they can fully focus on the healing
of their child. Without our House, families would be forced to
sleep in the hospital lobby, a child’s hospital room or even their
cars, as most families cannot afford a hotel for weeks or months –
especially under the financial stress of mounting medical bills from
years of on-going treatment. Our families also have to continue to
pay for mortgage/rent and all of their ongoing expenses back home,
so your support of their stay at Ronald McDonald House truly eases
their minds.
Adopting a long-term family makes
the perfect gift and provides a unique
opportunity to honor friends and loved ones
such as your children, your anniversary, a
birthday, clients, your parents, employees or
the memory of a relative or friend.
Benefits to You

gifts of $3,000, $5,000 or $10,000).
