WHAT IS IT? ROAD SMART. SCOOTER SMART. LICENCE SMART. Scooters are a fun, stylish and inexpensive form of personal transport. A Scooter is a two wheeled vehicle with a step-through platform for the operator’s feet to rest on while ridden. Due to their relatively smaller size, scooters can be hard to see by drivers of motor vehicles especially in heavy traffic. The following tips will help you keep safe when “scootering” Queensland Licence requirements Scooters are fun, easy to ride and inexpensive to operate. (A scooter with an engine capacity of greater than 50cc falls under motorcycle road regulations and a scooter with an engine capacity of less than 50cc is re-named a Moped for ease of distinction and falls under road regulations for Class C drivers). Scooters with engine capacity greater than 50cc: Require an automatic motorcycle licence. All persons must hold a Class C (car) licence for a minimum of 12 months and be 18 years or older to be eligible to apply for an automatic motorcycle licence. Ride with the flow of traffic Use extra caution at intersections, carpark entrances, exits and driveways and people exiting vehicles Do not ride on the footpath Ensure you are well protected with boots (slip resistant), jeans, gloves, helmet, jackets with protective armour and eye protection as a minimum of protective gear, no matter how warm the weather Scooters are easy to ride Scooters are made to be convenient, functional and simple for any person to ride. They are automatic, light weight, have a lower centre of gravity as well as under seat storage space. A great alternative Licensing, registration and insurance requirements are less expensive than cars and scooters are easy to park. Scooter smart Scooters are easy to maintain and inexpensive to own and have great re-sale value. They offer an affordable and flexible form of personal transport for journeys which are difficult to be undertaken by other sustainable modes such as walking or cycling. Scooters also offer significant environmental advantages over the private motor vehicle. ENGINE SMART GUIDE. Secure your scooter, either through steering lock, immobilised switch and sometimes an ignition lock 50cc Scooter or less than 50cc Moped: Limited to 50km/h by law. Suitable for local suburban travel and inner city congested roads, where speed limits are 40, 50 and 60km/h. 125cc to 150cc Scooter: Suitable for local and inner city travel, continuous travel on 80km/h roads and suitable for brief commutes on 100km/h speed limited roads. 200cc Scooter: Suitable for local travel and continuous travel on 100km/h roads as well as brief commutes on 110km/h speed limited roads. 250cc to 650cc Scooter: Suitable for local travel and continuous travel on 110km/h speed limited roads.
