I LOVE MY BREAKFAST! Victory Assaf, Alfardan Towers Spa, Manager THE IMPORTANCE OF BREAKFAST By Twiggy Sadek, Alfardan Group HR Department, Training Specialist Jump starting the day with breakfast benefits everyone -- children, teens and adults. “Eating breakfast is very important for the brain and the body first thing in the morning”. “Breakfast skippers often feel tired, restless or irritable in the morning.” Breakfast is the first chance the body has to refuel its glucose levels, also known as blood sugar, after 8 to 12 hours without a meal or snack. Glucose is essential for the brain and is the main energy source. Blood glucose also helps fuel the muscles needed for physical activity throughout the day. SIMPLE, EASY WAYS TO INCORPORATE BREAKFAST IN YOUR DAILY ROUTINE Choosing my topic for this article, I got managers and leaders to vote on some ideas. This one got 0 votes. This is when I realized how understated intuition is in the mind of many leaders. This is the reason why I chose to write about this elaborate subject. Intuition. Defined as the ability to sense or know immediately without reasoning. Yet, for many, a term mainly associated with women, for others an abstract concept closer to spirituality, but many haven’t been able to wrap their minds around this concept. But for the greatest leaders in history, intuition was what they relied on during tough decision making. Bill Gates says, “Often you have to rely on intuition.” “Listen to your intuition. It will tell you everything you need to know.” ~ Anthony J. D’Angelo “The only real valuable thing is intuition.” ~ Albert Einstein. • When there are insufficient data, or not enough time to gather the data • When there is too much information, or data are conflicting • When data seem to support several options equally • When a group’s vision has grown cloudy That is when all logic and analysis are of little help, and that is when the leader finds intuition of true value. So the question remains, do you trust your intuition? Do you listen to that gut feeling when making decisions? Because we rely too much Leadership depends on more on logic, we push away any sporadic than just the facts. Leaders see ideas that seem irrational to us. trends, resources and problems, and can read people In Dr. John Maxwell’s 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, Dr. Maxwell speaks about the Law of Intuition and states that “leadership depends on more than just the facts. Leaders see trends, resources and problems, and can read people. The law of intuition is based on facts plus instinct and other intangible factors. A leader has to read the situation and know instinctively what play to call. Leadership is more art than science.” The human brain is made up of 3 components: the conscious mind, the subconscious mind and the unconscious mind. Intuition, which some may call gut feeling, hunch, or even inner voice, lies in the unconscious mind. Here, where logic of the conscious mind has no access, ideas get generated. When, you might ask, can such unconscious energy be useful to you as a leader? 8 To start with, it is a decision maker which never fails you under rough circumstances. “When we struggle with creation and ideation it’s because we’re trying to use our conscious mind to resolve it, but it wasn’t designed for that task. It’s a fabulous problem solver but it’s not an ideator. The key to unclogging the log jam is to engage the unconscious mind. The intuition. You can’t see intuition because it’s energy but it’s real and it’s always there”, says Sherry Waddingham, coach, speaker, and Founder and President of Mindshift, in her discussion Intuitive Leadership Listening to Your Intuition. So when you need to make that tough decision, sleep on it, in all meaning of the term. Let your unconscious mind tap into your conscious mind while you sleep, and wake up with new and fresh ideas. And if you feel you are not ready to trust it completely, test it with the smallest of decisions you make before you venture out with what really matters. 1. The water you drink first thing in the morning will kick up your metabolism right away. 2. Start small. If you’re not a breakfast eater, begin with whole wheat toast and/or a piece of fruit. In a few days, add more food. 3. Choose fruit for breakfast. Fruit gives you fiber. Fresh fruit is the best choice. There are many to choose from: oranges, grapefruits, apples, bananas, grapes, kiwis, mangos, melons, berries. Eat two servings of fruit every morning. Canned fruit packed in juice is also a good choice. Add dried fruit to your cereal. 4. Eat high fiber hot cereal. Hot 5. 6. 7. 8. cereal is the best choice, but there are several brands of cold cereal in the market that are high in fiber and low in sugar. Choose whole grain bread. Eat two slices of toast in the morning or a whole grain bagel. Spread with fruit spread or applesauce or your favorite nut butter. Make healthy pancakes or waffles. Have you ever considered topping your pancakes or waffles with fruit? Instead of scrambled eggs, try scrambled tofu. You’re in for a great surprise. The sky’s the limit. The only limitation is your imagination. Make it a priority. Eat breakfast. CHOOSE: High fiber, ready to eat cereals and whole grain breads. • Choose a cereal with at least 3-5 grams of fiber per serving. • Choose cereal that have 5 grams or less of sugar per serving. Remember 4 grams of sugar=1 teaspoon. • Choose bread with at least 2 grams of dietary fiber per slice. A good breakfast is one that provides at least one third of the day’s calories. Breakfast is also very important for weight loss and weight management. It helps curb your hunger and prevent binge eating later in the day. Breakfast is important to manage your weight and potentially lose weight by eating less calories throughout the day. WHAT’S YOUR EXCUSE FOR NOT EATING BREAKFAST? 1.“No time?” How much time does it take to eat a bowl of cereal? Make toast and eat it on your way to work or make your breakfast the night before. Making time for breakfast is making time to be healthy. 2.“Not hungry?” To get started, don’t eat anything after an early supper. Finish supper by 7:30 - 8:00pm. 3.“Might gain weight?” Eating breakfast will actually help you reach and maintain your healthy weight. Your appetite will be satisfied longer. You’ll be eating food when you can best burn the calories. You’ll feel great, and more energized. Health is by Choice...not by chance! 4.“You don’t like breakfast foods?” You don’t have to eat traditional breakfast foods. You can eat leftovers, fruit or a sandwich. Any healthy food is fine. The choice is yours. By adopting a better diet and wiser lifestyle habits, you can live longer, feel better, and enjoy a healthier, more productive life. 5.“You don’t like eating breakfast?” It is in your best interest to eat breakfast. Take the step and invest in your health by changing your lifestyle. Do the right thing. Eat breakfast for all the beneficial reasons we have stated. For intuitive knowing is not just a feeling, it is the combination of your logic, experiences, memories, and the paranormal, so let yourself trust in it! 9 Mind, Body and Soul Safety Tips FOOD TO BOOST TEN BARBEQUE SAFETY TIPS The immune system during the cooler months Brought to you by Alfardan Properties Engineering and Maintenance Department Protect yourself against winter ailments, with nutritionist Judith Wills’ immunity-boosting advice Avocado The avocado pear is rich in vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant with immunityboosting effects. Antibacterial and antifungal actions boost resistance to disease, while the vitamin B6 content helps to make antibodies which fight infection. Tip: The darker green flesh nearest the skin is richest in nutrients, so scoop it all out! Brassicas Dark, leafy green vegetables, such as dark cabbage, sprouts, broccoli, spinach and kale, contain high levels of a group of phytochemicals called glucosinolates - strong immunity-boosters which can be also very rich in vitamin C, an antioxidant vitamin that aids the immune system. Brassicas also contain good amounts of vitamins E and B6 (see Avocados), and carotenoids. Tip: The stronger the taste, the more likely it is to be doing you good! Berries Most berries contain vitamin C, an antioxidant (see Brassicas), and all berries contain phytochemicals from the bioflavonoid group, which are antibacterial and antiviral. Blueberries and cranberries are particularly good at fighting infection, raspberries are high in quercetin and ellagic acid, while blackcurrants and strawberries are high in vitamin C. Tip: Berries don’t lose any nutritional value if they’re frozen. Chillies Chilli peppers contain a phenolic compound called capsaicin, which has an antibacterial effect and helps to relieve congestion in the nose and airways. Chillies - and their cousins in the pepper family, sweet peppers are also high in vitamin C and carotenoids. Tip: The hotter the chilli, the stronger the beneficial effects. Fish & Seafood Oily fish, such as herrings, mackerel, sardines, salmon and fresh tuna, are rich in omega-3 fatty acids - these essential fats are important for optimum immune function, amongst other things. Eat two portions a week. Shellfish, such as crab, prawns, oysters, mussels and scallops, are rich in zinc - a mineral well known for its immune-boosting properties. All fish, including white fish, is a good source of selenium. Tip: Salmon is also the best fish source of vitamin E (see Avocados). Bio Yogurt Bio - or live - yogurt contains billions of friendly bacteria known as probiotics, which help to boost your immune system healthy. If you’re taking antibiotics, levels of these friendly bacteria can be depleted because the antibiotics kill the good bugs as well as the bad ones! Eating bio yogurt daily will help re-colonnise your gut and give a boost to your immune system. Tip: Bio yogurts have a mild, creamy flavor, so they go very well with muesli. Citrus Fruits These are a rich, low-cost source of vitamin C at this time of year. Eating the whole fruit (not just the juice) also provides your body with flavonoids phytochemicals that enhance the effect of vitamin C. Tip: To protect the vitamin C content, store citrus fruit in the fridge. Grapes and apples (and berries) are also flavonoid-rich. The barbeque season is finally here. While barbeques are a great way to spend some quality time with friends and family, it also has its risks. Identifying those risks and approaching them proactively can eliminate unwanted hazards. Garlic Garlic is a powerful antiseptic antibacterial and antiviral herb. A sulphur compound called allicin (which gives garlic its strong aroma) is thought to be the main source of its immune-boosting properties, because it supports the white blood cells that gather to fight off infection. Check out our top 10 barbeque safety tips. Ginger Fresh root ginger’s potent gingerol oils have a strong antioxidant effect. Ginger is a traditional tonic, expectorant and soother, and has been used as an aid to good health for hundreds of years. Chinese medicine uses ginger to treat coughs and colds. 2. Food Safety Food poisoning is very common and can affect anyone. Remember that a bacterium can grow at any temperature above freezing point and will stay alive until the temperature reaches around 165 degrees Fahrenheit. To prevent bacteria from multiplying in your food, make sure that you keep it cool and covered before its goes on the grill. Tip: Garlic should ideally be eaten soon after crushing and only lightly cooked - cooking at a high temperature or for a long period reduces the beneficial effects. Tip: Most spices, including turmeric, cinnamon and cloves, have antioxidant properties. Honey Most good-quality honey has some antibacterial properties and can help to clear up infections and wounds, but manuka honey from New Zealand contains antioxidant compounds which can help strengthen the immune system. It’s also a proven antiseptic. Tip: Use Manuka honey instead of sugar (but don’t cook with it, as heat may destroy the beneficial compounds). Two teaspoonfuls a day should be enough to provide health benefits. Lentils The brown and green varieties are particularly rich in iron. Studies show that if you’re even slightly deficient in iron, you’re more at risk of suffering from cold sores (herpes simplex) and other viral infections. Lentils are rich in zinc (see Fish & Seafood), Vitamin B6 (see Brassicas) and are a great source of selenium. Tip: Add lentils to a soup with vitamin C-rich vegetables, such as tomatoes, cabbage and onions. The vitamin C increases the absorption of iron. Mushrooms Dark-gilled mushrooms and most varieties of oriental mushroom, such as shiitake, maitake and reishi, contain high levels of antioxidant phenolic compounds, such as lentinan, shown to boost immunity and increase resistance to bacterial infection. Tip: Oriental varieties of mushroom are good in stir-fries and warm salads. 1. Fire To avoid fire hazards and flare-ups, always keep a fire extinguisher around and be familiar with the type of fire you are using and how to control it. Avoid using highly flammable liquids such as petrol and kerosene. 3. Instructions Never assume that your new grill works just like the last one and that all the same rules apply. Each grill has specific instructions to be followed. Reading the instructions is thus important and useful when it comes to knowing what type of grill you are dealing with and how to properly use it. It also saves you time and energy and prevents unnecessary safety hazards. 4. Location Location is very important when it comes to your grill. Choose a spot far away from trees and bushes in order to avoid any flareups. Always keep the grill a safe distance away from the lighter fluid and 10 feet away from your house. 5. Gas Safety Before you start grilling, make sure you check your grill thoroughly for leaks by using the soap test. You should also regularly and thoroughly check for any blockage or obstruction in the path of the fuel, caused by bugs, which can ultimately cause the gas to flow where it shouldn’t. 6. Charcoal Safety The main problem of a charcoal grill is lighting the coal. Using lighter fluid can cause different kinds of problems, so care should be taken in finding the best way to light your coals. Never pour or squirt lighter fluid into an open flame. 7. Grease Grease is one of the major causes of flare-ups. It builds over time and can easily get to several pounds only after a few cookouts. So keep your grill safe by cleaning it after every cookout. 8. Healthy Grilling Techniques Cooking meat, particularly red meat and chicken, at very high temperatures can result in surface charring, producing cancercausing substances (Heterocyclic Amines or HCA). People who love to eat grilled meats must therefore watch out. Taking the following steps will help minimize the risk: use marinades, which can reduce the risk by as much as 98 percent; do not overcook food; keep grill temperatures relatively low (under 600 degrees cooking temperature); and use thinner or smaller cuts of meat. 9. Smoke The downside to any cookout experience is the excessive smoke that gets into your lungs. Smoke contains carbon monoxide and other dangerous substances that can cause great harm to your body. Take a break from the grill every now and then, and make sure that you keep children as far away as possible. 10. Children Barbeques are all about having a good time, playing games and participating in fun activities. However, caution must be taken in order to prevent injuries. Do not allow children to play anywhere near the fire or the barbeque path. Sourced from: http://bbq.about.com/od/grillinghelp/tp/grillsafety.htm Sourced from: Healthy Living. Editor: Geoffrey Palmer. The epitome of aesthetic appeal and dynamic performance in the upper medium category now performs the function of a role model in the field of safety, too. The new BMW 5 Series passed the latest Euro NCAP (New Car Assesment Programme) crash test with the top rating of 5 stars. The sixth generation of the model series performed impressively on the test - which was extended to include additional criteria in 2009 - with its comprehensive safety fittings as standard as well as a highly effective vehicle occupant protection system for various different collision types. With its outstanding results on vehicle occupant protection for adults and children, pedestrian protection and standard safety features, the new BMW 5 Series moves into the leading position within its segment. It is also the first BMW model series to receive a 100 percent on the Euro NCAP crash test rating for outstanding safety features. The Euro NCAP test is regarded as one of the most demanding tests in the world to be applied to new motor vehicles. The Euro NCAP test is recognised as a benchmark for crash safety by governments, 2011 DUCATI DIAVEL automobile clubs and consumer protection organisations throughout Europe. The test scenario includes a head-on collision, side crash and side impact against a steel post. In 2009, additional criteria were added, with testing of electronic safety features as well as additional injury risks in diverse types of collision. After analysing the test results, Euro NCAP testers certified that the new BMW 5 Series provides an extremely stable passenger cell which ensures extensive protection from injury both for driver and passengers, regardless of their size and seating position. Maximum points were especially scored on the side impact test, with particularly effective protection for adult passengers being achieved on all other test scenarios. The analysis of vehicle occupant protection for children showed an outstanding performance by the new BMW 5 Series. The maximum point score was awarded on the test for seating systems designed for children aged three, for both head-on and side impact. Both test scenarios also registered a stable position and minimum head movement at the moment of collision in the use of seating systems designed for children aged one and a half and three.
