Fayetteville Academy SUMMER ODYSSEY CAMPS 2016 3200 Cliffdale Road Fayetteville, NC 28303 910-868-5131 SUMMER ODYSSEY 2016 Fayetteville General Information Academy is a college preparatory REGISTRATION: Students are admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. Many opportunities programs have limited enrollment; therefore, we recommend that you register no later than two weeks prior to the beginning of the program in which you are interested. Instructors reserve the right to cancel any program due to insufficient enrollment. If this happens, you will be contacted at least one week before that program, and your entire tuition will be refunded. All programs meet Monday through Friday unless otherwise indicated. since 1970. Costs and Fees: All camps cost $160 (supply fee included) with the exception of the school offering exceptional camps scheduled for June 8th—10th ($110). Before Care is $20 per family per week. This fee is non-refundable. After Care is $100 per child per week or $25 per day. This fee includes a supply fee and afternoon snack. Dress: Students should dress appropriately for the program in which they are enrolled. Bare feet are not permitted in the buildings. Dress should always be in good taste. Water bottles and sunscreen are suggested supplies for outdoor camps. Closed toe shoes are required. Insurance: Fayetteville Academy carries a comprehensive general liability policy, but parents are responsible for their child's accident and health policies. Admissions Policy: The Academy does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, scholarship, national or ethnic origin, or religion in the administration of admissions, educational policies, financial aid, athletic programs, or oher activities. Applications for Summer Odyssey are accepted from all students, regardless of where they are enrolled during the regular academic year. If a student is required to withdraw, that tuition cannot be refunded. 2 SUMMER ODYSSEY 2016 General Information (continued) Times: All half-day camps 8:30 am —12:00 pm. Before Care 7:30—8:30 am After Care 12:00 pm—5:30 pm *Drop-off and pick-up for all camps will be located in the gym lobby. *After Care will be on the playground or in the technology building. Late fee of $1 per minute will be due immediately after 5:30 pm. *Signs will be posted weekly as to specific location of all camps. The Academy will offer camps June 8th through August 5th. All camps (except for June 8th-10th)cost $160 (supply fee included). Half day camps will only be conducted when 6 or more campers are registered. Please look out for any special instructions from the teacher the week before your child’s camp!. We will create crafts and treats, learn about historical figures of American Girl, and finish the week with an American Girl tea party! Fizz, Bang, Boom! We will stay busy with a jam-packed day that will include results that will fizz, bang, boom, and more! We will spend the week learning about all types of sharks and discuss structure and function. Each camper will have the opportunity to explore the external and internal structures of a Dog Fish Shark. Campers will do various arts & craft projects that are fun, challenging, and messy! We will end the week by helping students pack up all of their work to take home in a portfolio that they made! Students will learn how the heart works, parts of the heart, and dissect a pig’s heart on Friday. Students will observe heart tissue under the microscope and design their own heart t-shirt. Try your hand using navigational skills to locate the bounty of treasure listed on your treasure map! Let the Wild Learning Rumpus Begin! Instructor: Nancy Golsteyn Grades: 3—4 Enjoy a week of drama, crafts, art, brain games, poetry, and cooking as we take a wild journey through Maurice Sendak’s award winning story Where the Wild Things Are. Campers will benefit from opportunities to improve math, reading comprehension, and writing skills in a fun, creative format. Cooking Camp Instructor: Amanda Young p m Ca l l u is f Grades: PK—3 Taste the adventure. Measure, mix, and make recipes for your own cookbook in this exciting cooking camp. Move over Bobby Flay......we're cooking our own way!! *Nuts and nut products will be used throughout this camp 2016 Summer Olympics (12 campers maximum) Instructor: Victoria Morgan d e l l ce Grades: 3—5 Everyone dreams of participating in the Olympics, and campers will have the chance to do just that in this Olympic themed camp. Campers will learn about Olympic history, symbols, and games through interactive activities such as crafts, games, reading, and hands-on learning. n a C 8 Summer Odyssey 2016 June 13th—17th Crafts Around the World Instructor: Maria Marquez Grades: K—4 We will make crafts from different countries in the world. Travel with us and create a Mexican piñata, a Puerto Rican carnival mask, Guatemalan worry dolls, a Chilean loom bag, Spanish fans, Chinese umbrellas, Guatemalan bark paintings, and more! Baseball Camp Instructor: Alan Campbell Grades: PK—5 Come learn the fundamentals of baseball! We will work on throwing, catching, fielding, and game plays as well as techniques to become a great team player. t f e ts l Gymnastics o p s 3 Instructor: Shay Morazes and Drew Yoder Grades: PK—2 Come out and learn basic skills in gymnastics, tumbling, flexibility, and stretching techniques. Duct Tape Engineering Jr. Instructor: Michelle Berrisford Grades: K—3 Campers will explore the versatility of duct tape by making and testing items constructed exclusively out of duct tape. We will do many fun projects with duct tape that campers will be able to keep. Projects may include duct tape wallets, bookmarks, and duct tape boats (and seeing if we can make them float on water). If you participated last year don’t worry! We will be doing new projects as well! Join this Jr. camp for projects which will be less frustrating for smaller hands! 9 Summer Odyssey 2016 June 13th—17th Tennis Camp Instructor: Wesley Pantelakos Grades: 2—6 Get in the game! Learn the fundamental skills of tennis such as forehand, backhand, volley, and serve. The camp will include lots of contests and fun lead-up games. The skills and drills taught are part of the USTA program. Get your child involved in a lifetime sport. Fort Box 2.0 Camp Instructors: Ms. Reavis and Mrs. Reeves Grades: PK—5 l l u is f Come join Mrs. Reeves and Ms. Reavis for Fort Box 2.0! Students will begin the day with a “building/craft” activity and then work collaboratively to construct and build using various materials. We will begin the week by using newspapers to build a “stick” structure, then we will move to “tents”, then to cardboard boxes. On the last day of camp we will have a “Fort Party”! *Students need to bring on the first day: 1 large sheet, 2 cardboard boxes (big enough to sit in), and toilet paper and paper towel rolls (as many as you want). p m Ca Creative Writing / College Application Camp Instructor: MaryMelda Kizer Grades: Rising 12th graders / 11th graders if space is available This camp is designed to get students thinking and writing creatively, with a special emphasis on college applications. Marymelda Kizer, the current FA Librarian, also taught 9th, 10th, and 11th grade English at Fayetteville Academy for ten years. She has her undergraduate and Master’s degrees in English Education from UNC-Chapel Hill, where she attended as a Morehead Scholar. Students who participate in the camp will also have access to Mrs. Kizer for help with college essays throughout the school year. d e l l ce Can All Sports Camp (15 campers maximum) Instructor: Karin Levesque Grades: 2—6 Tired of playing the same games? Enjoy making masks and light sabers for your favorite characters as well as coloring, and testing out our force abilities. Amazing Race Instructor: Rachael Sappington Grades: 3—5 Enjoy a week of learning different games from different countries as we travel the globe on this fun filled competition and have daily competitions with the games from different areas of the world. Glow Camp Instructor: Michelle Berrisford Grades: K—6 Are you ready to GLOW in the dark? In this fun camp we will make many crafts that glow in the dark and will have fun turning out the lights and using black lights! Campers will learn how to make various glow in the dark items and will be able to take crafts home along with instructions to repeat these processes at home. From salsa to flamenco to tarantella and beyond, you'll have fun movin' and groovin' ...We will travel around the world learning dances from Spain, Puerto Rico, Italy, Chile, Dominican Republic, Colombia, and more! Ed Emberley Drawing Camp Instructor: Ms. Reavis ll u f is Grades: 1—5 Come have some art fun with Ms. Reavis! This drawing camp is based on the “Learn How To Draw” books by Ed Emberley. Each day campers will be introduced to the day’s theme. They will learn how to draw each subject step-by-step (a process lovingly guided by Ms. Reavis); then, after some practice, they will use what they have learned to create a full-page drawing. Campers will investigate the solar system and learn how to take better care of our own planet. Robotics Programming Camp Instructor: Debi Smith Grades : 4 and up Learn to program our EV3 Lego® Robot. New users and experienced programmers will enjoy this week of robotics programming fun. You can start from “What is a Robot? And how do I give it instructions” to completing more complex “Missions” (or challenges) that vary according to individual camper’s capabilities. You will work as a team and/or as individuals – whatever works for you. This camp is for anyone interested in programming a robot. It is not just for FA Robotics Team members although they are welcome to attend for additional programming experience. Boredom Busters Instructor: Beckie Smith Grades: PK—2 Have you ever been so bored that you couldn’t even come up with anything to do to fix your boredom? Have you wasted hours telling your mom that you were bored? Come spend the week making and playing indoor games you can re-create at home, doing cool science experiments and discovering how to turn a boring day into something fun. Your imagination will run wild, and you’ll never be bored again! d e l l ce Can 14 Summer Odyssey 2016 June 27th—July 1st Kids’ Dramatix: Greek Drama- Tales From Mt. Olympus Instructor: Jennifer Ratcliffe Grades: 2-5 Join us as we explore the world of Zeus and the Gods of Mt. Olympus! Discover how this ancient civilization has influenced us today. Experience Greek Mythology and Greek Drama through games, activities, and improvisations. Experiment with acting in masks. Prepare for battle like a Spartan, and be a part of bringing an ancient myth to life! **Students will need to bring one king size pillowcase for simple costume design. Red, White, Blue and YOU! Instructor: Dawn Burt Grades: PK—3 Let’s celebrate the USA and YOU before the 4th of July holiday! We will be creating red, white and blue crafts and snacks. We will also be learning a little history about the 4th of July and how YOU make this country unique and wonderful! Girls Just Wanna Have Fun! Instructor: Beckie Smith l l u is f Grades: PK—2 p m Ca Join us for fun-filled activities, the kinds of things you might do at a typical sleepover with crafts and activities of all kinds – specially formulated for the girl in all of us. Make your own soap, lip gloss, and sugar scrubs, receive make-up tips and info on how to care for your skin, and enjoy manicures and pedicures. In addition, learn to make jewelry out of recycled materials; the list of activities goes on and on! Let’s Go Camping! Instructor: Debi Smith Grades: 2—5 Do you like to camp? Can you build a tent? How about a campfire? Do you know your knots? Do you like wildlife and the outdoors? Come join us for fun and adventure about how to camp and cook outdoors (including s’mores and “walking tacos”). Camp-related crafts will also be completed! 15 Summer Odyssey 2016 June 27th—July 1st Disney Extravaganza Instructor: Rachael Sappington Grades: K—5 Enjoy all the Disney fun there is to offer. Each day we will explore a different Disney favorite movie learning the songs, making Disney treats and our own Disney characters. The camp will conclude with a Disney-themed party and making our very own Mickey Mouse ears! Sherlock Holmes Camp Instructor: Michelle Berrisford Grades: 3—6 In this camp we will be solving mysteries and stopping crime! Find all the clues to catch the cat burglar and return the stolen ancient artifact!! Join us to have fun catching and stopping the bad guys! Alien Camp Instructor: Ms. Reavis and Mrs. Reeves Grades: PK—5 Come blast off with Mrs. Reeves and Ms. Reavis for a fun week of Alien activities that are out of this world! We will read stories, create aliens with various art media and even make spaceships! We will spend the week throwing, pitching, hitting, and sliding. JEDI Engineering using LEGO® (9 AM—12 PM) Instructor: Playwell is p am l l u f Ages: 5—7 The Force Awakens in this introductory engineering course for young Jedi! Explore engineering principles by designing and building projects such as LEGO® X-Wings, R2 Units, Energy Catapults, Defense Turrets, and Settlements from a galaxy far, far away. Create motorized and architectural projects with imagination and engineering to defeat the Empire! C JEDI Master Engineering using LEGO® (1PM—4PM) Instructor: Playwell Ages: 8—12 ll u f is The Force Awakens in this advanced engineering course for young Jedi! (Session 1) “Pete the Cat” Instructor: Jennifer Ratcliffe Grades: PK—2 Help us bring a book to life! Come explore the process of producing a show from a simple story. Create simple costumes and scenery, and watch how a story transforms from the page to the stage— all Pete the Cat style! Handbell Boot Camp Instructor: Donald Warren Grades: 3 and up Learn about music while playing a giant human “piano!” Spend a week taking part in a crashcourse introduction to playing English handbells, including learning music-reading skills that are specific to handbell music. Handbells are specialized instruments that are played by a group instead of an individual musician, making ringing a fun challenge for music-savvy students. Students should have a few basic music reading skills, such as being familiar with the line and space names and note values. (Need 4, 6 or 9-11 participants. Other combinations won’t work.) d e l cel n a C Mystery Camp Instructor: Daniel Edmonds Grades: PK—2 Do you like mysteries? Do you have to know what happened at the end? Then Mystery Camp at Summer Odyssey is a unique week that you will enjoy! Decode drawings, solve riddles, become a private eye and have fun performing spy activities. Campers will go on scavenger hunts and perform spy activities each day. 18 Summer Odyssey 2016 Minion Camp Instructor: Ms. Reavis and Mrs. Reeves p m Ca July 5th—8th ll u f is Grades: PK—5 BELLO! Come join the two biggest minions for a week of minion fun! We will do crafts, dancing, art, and even learn to speak minion! The week will end with a minion party! POOPAYE! Cheer Camp Instructor: Rachael Sappington p m Ca ll u f is Grades: PK—5 Enjoy a week learning cheers, dance routines, and stunting. We will make spirit posters, bows, and tee shirts. The girls will have a performance on Friday at 11:30 am and will cheer during some of the home games during the 2016—2017 school year. Advanced Mad Scientists Instructor: Michelle Berrisford ll u f is Grades: 3—6 Campers will perform various fun experiments covering a variety of scientific concepts designed to peak their curiosity. We will learn and apply the scientific method in a fun way while exploring exciting things such as bouncy balls made of glue! Join this advanced camp for challenging projects designed for inquisitive minds! If you participated last year, don’t worry; we are doing new projects as well! p m Ca 19 Summer Odyssey 2016 July 11th—15th Garden Party Instructor: Melissa Bruns p m Ca l l u is f Grades: 1 –3 Let’s get our hands dirty in the garden! Together we will learn about growing flowers and foods. We will share healthy snacks, make crafts, and even have a Garden Party! Anyone Can Paint Watercolor Camp Instructor: Ms. Reavis Grades: 2– 6 Come join Ms. Reavis and Paint, Paint, Paint! Campers will learn about watercolor paints and how to use them. We will work with basic techniques to create step-by step paintings. At the end of the week we will have an art show in the Alumni Fine Arts Gallery. Origami Camp Instructor: Mrs. Reeves Grades: 3– 6 Come learn the ancient art of paper folding (Origami) with Mrs. Reeves! This is a fun camp designed to help children learn problem solving in a fun and creative way. We will begin the week with simple and basic folds, then work our way up to folding different characters. This camp is great for students who love to solve puzzles. By the end of the week campers will be sent home with a folder full of work and an abundance of knowledge. d e l l ce n a C 20 Summer Odyssey 2016 July 11th—15th Kids’ Dramatix: Little Actor’s Studio- Monologue Workshop Instructor: Jennifer Ratcliffe Grades: 2-5 Looking to refine your acting skills? Join us for our Monologue Workshop where we explore character development through improvisation, voice and body work, and more! Participants will also leave the workshop with an audition-ready monologue for their portfolio. Tie-dye, fun crafts, and games that will remind your parents of their days at camp away from home. Learn camp songs, be creative and crazy. Loads of fun outdoors and in! Makin’ Movies Instructor: Debi Smith Grades: 4 and up Bring your imagination and your camera’s eye. We will learn to plan (storyboards), video-tape (w/ iPads) and edit movies. We will edit movies on iPads and transfer videos to PC’s for editing and refining. Simple stop-animation and even some clay-mation will be included. Family and friends will be invited to our Film Festival on Friday! Jump Start to Chemistry (10 student maximum) Instructor: Nancy Goodrum Grades: 10 Get a head start to success in chemistry! Learn some basic vocabulary terms and the periodic table and the unique elements that make up all matter. Practice working in our chemistry lab each day. Learn how to work safely, how to read directions and how to collect and record data. Practice writing and balancing simple chemical equations. Have fun and get ready for chemistry class all at the same time! Disney Extravaganza Instructor: Emma McCauley Grades: K—5 Enjoy all the Disney fun there is to offer. Each day we will explore a different Disney favorite movie learning the songs, making Disney treats and our own Disney characters. Explore the dynamics of staging and character development, and watch a (short) ORIGINAL play come to life! Sherlock Holmes Camp Instructor: Michelle Berrisford Grades: 3—6 In this camp we will be solving mysteries and stopping crime! Find all the clues to catch the cat burglar and return the stolen ancient artifact!! Join us to have fun catching and stopping the bad guys! Students will begin the day with a “building/craft” activity and then work collaboratively to construct and build using various materials. Instructor: Debi Smith Grades: 2—6 Join us for fun-filled activities, the kinds of things you might do at a typical sleepover with crafts and activities of all kinds – specially formulated for the girl in all of us. Make your own soap, lip gloss, and sugar scrubs, receive make-up tips and info on how to care for your skin, and enjoy manicures and pedicures. Learn to knit with your hands to make scarfs and/or make jewelry out of recycled materials. How do you do a French Braid or fix your hair in some fancy “updo” you ask? We’ll learn that too! Build engineer-designed projects such as boats, bridges, mazes and motorized cars, and use special pieces to create your own unique design! Explore the endless creative possibilities of the LEGO® building system with the guidance of an experienced Play-Well instructor. This is an ideal way to prepare young builders for the challenge of Engineering FUNdamentals. Bashem’ Bots using LEGO® (1PM—4 PM) Instructor: Playwell Ages: 8—12 Have you ever wanted to learn how to make a massive motorized LEGO machine? Our Play Well Engineering instructors guide students in this advanced Play-Well engineering camp, as they reengineer standard LEGO vehicles into mechanized machines that can traverse challenging obstacles, battle against fellow bots, and take on Play-Well Instructors’ colossal creations. Advanced Duct Tape Engineering Instructor: Michelle Berrisford Grades: 3—6 Campers will explore the versatility of duct tape by making and testing different items constructed exclusively out of duct tape. We will do many fun projects with duct tape that campers will be able to keep. Projects may include duct tape wallets, bookmarks, and duct tape boats (and seeing if we can make them float on water). If you participated last year, don’t worry! We will be doing new projects as well! Join this advanced camp for more challenging and rewarding projects! Each camper must bring three rolls of the duct tape of their choosing. 27 Summer Odyssey 2016 August 1st—5th Oodles of Noodles Instructor: Rachael Sappington Grade: 1—5 Enjoy a week of fun-filled games and arts and crafts using pool noodles. The children will make craft projects and assemble lots of games for a competition on Friday. Handbell Consort Instructor: Donald Warren Grades: 7 and up Students who already play a musical instrument will enjoy the challenge of learning to play an ensemble instrument! While introducing students to English handbells, this camp will work with students who read music, either instrumentally or vocally, by exploring how handbell playing sharpens skills, reflexes, and musicianship through intermediate and advanced ringing. This camp is best suited for students who have had about a year of music, whether band, piano, violin, guitar, voice, or other instrument. (Need 4, 6 or 9-11 participants.
