Sewing News January, February, March 2016 NEW YEAR GREETING As we draw to a close of another year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you, my loyal and wonderful customers, for your patronage, and for helping to make 2015 a very special year for us at Bernina Sewing Center. Because of you, we continue to expand our products and services. Seeing your excitement and enthusiasm in your sewing projects and accomplishments brings us great joy. It is gratifying and encouraging to share in your successes. We appreciate your suggestions and compliments for the changes we have made. Doris BSC Quilt Retreat Bernina Sewing Center will be sponsoring our 2nd annual quilt retreat at the historic Northern Hotel beginning Friday, January 15th and ending Monday, January 18 (Martin Luther King week-end). The Northern Hotel will be offering special rates to retreat attendees if anyone is interested in staying the night there. Highlights for the weekend: There will be an area where attendees can set up their own machines and work on their own projects. There will be another area where a variety of optional classes will be offered by “Lucy and Ethel”. These classes will include Fat Quarter Pop-Ups, Two Bobbin Bowl, Notebook Cover, and Free Motion Art Quilt. We will provide sewing machines to be used in these classes with a limit of 10 students per class. Also offered will be free demonstrations, drawings, valet parking, lots of fun, and a trolley ride to Bernina Sewing Center for a private shopping opportunity and light supper. Cost: $150 – Start the New Year out with something just for you! Diana Simkins - Judy Niemeyer’s Cattails In The Meadow Diana will be offering the Cattails in the Meadow class for two Saturdays in January and February. This class has been requested and we hope you can come! A center paper pieced star with appliqued cattails makes a unique quilt. Stop in the store; we have the sample Diana made. January Feathered Star Embroidered Quilt Saturday, January 2 – 10:00 – 3:00 Instructor: Myrt Wittenberg This is a continuation of the embroidered block of the month started in October 2015. 2016 Little House on the Prairie MYSTERY Quilt Along We are participating in the national mystery quilt program using the new Little House on the Prairie fabric from Andover Fabrics (the same ones who brought us Downton Abby fabric). This will be a weekly class and you must register for the class on line at lovebugstudios.com. They will be sending you the weekly patterns and you buy the fabric kit at Bernina Sewing Center. Also, you take the classes at our store. You will be able to select from 2 colorways: Dear Ma (comfortable & warm) and Dear Pa (cool & relaxing). There will be 9 weekly classes held Friday mornings to complete the blocks. Then there will be 3 weekly classes held Fridays all day for the assembling, borders & finishing the quilt. When you purchase your kit from Bernina Sewing Center, all your classes are INCLUDED. The schedule for the classes are Fridays, Jan. 15, 22, 29, Feb. 5, 12, 19, 26, Mar. 4 & 11. Time is 9:30 – 12:00. Beginner Free Motion Club Tuesday, January 19 Time: 1:00 – 3:30 Vivien and Phyllis are continuing the free motion skill builder club. This class is designed for the sewist that has little or no previous experience with free-motion. This class will be offered each month so your skills can develop as you learn new designs each month. If you have not attended the club before, we are offering an orientation at 11:00 – 12:00 on the same day as the class to help you catch up with the rest of the class. Everything will be included from fabric selection, rotary cutting, piecing, quilting and binding! When you finish you will have a nice wall hanging or table top size quilt. This runner is an adaptation of the Big Sky Quilt. Big Stars will be constructed using the Scrap Crazy 6” template set. You will want one of every size for your sewing room. They are also perfect as a toy container in the baby’s room or sports equipment container in a kid’s room. Choose your fabric to suit your décor. Instructor: Vivien Swant Cost: $15 plus supplies Border Creek Station Mystery Quilt Club Saturday, March 12 – 10:00 – 3:00 Instructor: Myrt Wittenberg This is a continuation of the block of the month started in October 2015. “Little Miss Muffet Sat on a Tuffet” class Thursday & Friday, March 17 & 18 Time: 10:00 – 4:00 This is the most fun sewing project I have done in a long time! It really is a tuffet, like a footstool. Grab your favorite jelly roll and start sewing. It features paper piecing and the easy part is it is all straight seams. If you have never done paper piecing, then this would be a good time to learn this fun technique. Put it all together and “walla”, you have a tuffet. Perfect for your own Little Miss. This is a two day class so you will be able to go home with a finished project. Rulers are the “hottest” innovation to quilting. They are perfect for those that want to quilt their own quilts but are unsure of their free motion skills. Each quarter she will feature a ruler and show all the creative ways you can use them. They can be used on your home sewing machine, sit down quilting machine or long arm machine. The possibilities are endless. It is a lecture/demo featuring sewing techniques, accessories as well as new products. Vivien, our local educator, shows how to make the featured project of the month. Fridays @ 1:00 – 3:00 January 8 – Applique a la Embroidery Create picture perfect applique with your embroidery machine while making charming kitchen towels customized to match your décor. Stabilizers and other products that make your embroidered project look professional will be discussed. February 12 – It’s Hoopless! You don’t always have to hoop an item in order to embroider it. Learn when and when not to use hoopless embroidery. Find out what stabilizers work successfully for this technique as you make a unique bag that will hold your sewing needs, cords and cables, or beauty supplies. March 11 – A Tisket! A Tasket! A Really Easy Basket (Liner)! Quilting in the hoop with the embroidery machine is fun and fast! We will use embroidery designs digitized especially for this technique as we make basket liners that you can customize to almost any size square or rectangular basket that you own. Serger Club MARJ OSTERMILLER Tuesday, February 2 Serger Club is the first Tuesday of every other month at Bernina Sewing Center. All serger brand owners are welcome! Use built-in patterns or create your own to give your Pattern Play Pouch its own personality! March 19 – Art Canvas Quilt Create one-of-a-kind designs effortlessly using Artwork Canvas. Continue to explore the creative tools in Artwork Canvas while having fun with the Blending tool and celebrating National Quilting Month. Designworks Decoded Thursdays, 10:00 – 3:00 January 7 – Cutwork Applique Create applique designs with ease using the Shapes tools combined with Intersect, Weld, and Trim tools. February 11 – Paint Play Learn to use the PaintWork tool in DesignWorks Software. We will begin with an existing design in the software and use the editing tools to create an entirely new look to the design. March 10 – Quilting with DesignWorks Celebrate National Quilt Month while learning to echo quilt in DesignWorks Software. bi-monthly club is a big hit!
