A Message from our President
As we complete the third quarter of the year, we look for even brighter linings
on the upcoming winter clouds. Our industry really appears to be moving
full speed ahead.
Our June Scholarship Fundraiser was a record success at The Kemper Open.
Many thanks to our second year Fundraising Chairwomen, Beth Reymer, K.D.
Swanson and Associates and to Whitney Tredwell, Geneysis Wallcoverings.
These ladies put in countless creative hours to produce a memorable event.
Everyone is still talking about the fun they had that day. We were pleased to
have guests attend from the original Los Angeles Chapter: Deborah Centurion,
SK Textile, Inc., Pamela Gideon-Hawke, Gideon Gallery, LTD and Lynda
Sullivan, JLF Contract Furnishings. The networking and golf education were
just tremendous. Those that mixed and mingled in the corporate tent got to
know each other better. Many took advantage of the beautiful Potomac course
and toured the grounds. It is an event we would like to repeat for next year.
Thanks also to the many volunteers and committee members who worked so
hard. And need I say, I want to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation
to our Sponsors and Underwriters. They have come through for us with
record funds. In a time when we could have had disaster, our Sponsors made
this our best year ever! We want to do everything now and throughout the
year to continue to thank them and keep their names in lights.
Our summer months included successful networking luncheons in Baltimore
and Bethesda. Our newest Sundowners proved to be well attended and a hit!
We expect to launch the “back to school” season with exciting, new programs.
So please watch for promotions for these events. Please bring an industry
friend that you know could benefit from NEWH.
As the year progresses, we consider that succession planning is the best
strategy for ensuring that we have a top notch Board of Directors for 2003.
Please consider working on next year’s Board when the ballots come out in
September. Especially if you have been an active committee member and
want your leadership capabilities to really be tested, consider serving on our
Board. Installation of new officers will be at the January 2003 program.
We lost a dedicated and loyal NEWH member as she transfers out of our
area, Tamra Thourot of Brennan Beer Gorman Monk Architects & Interiors.
Tamra has worked on Hospitality, Program and Fundraising Committees
throughout her membership here in DC. We will
miss her as she moves back to Chicago.
We proved that by working a little harder, not just
for ourselves, but for our industry, we are really
recovering from the 911 tragedy and economic
gloom. Keep it up, members. The momentum is
there. Let’s continue to grow and prosper!

September Program a Hit!
NEWH kicked off the fall season with
the program addressing ADA
Compliance. Held on Wednesday,
September 26 at the Holiday Inn Select,
the program attracted a diverse group
of NEWH members and guests.
Speaker, Warren Feldman of Nehmer
and Associates described non-ADA
compliant installations and advised how
to alter designs for accessibility. There
was fun banter between the speaker and
hotel owner and NEWH host, Alan
Margolius of Mardeck LTD as they
discussed real life ASA compliance
challenges. Good questions were fired
by Heather Stevens of HVS Compass,
Patty Wannall of The H. Chambers
Company, Nancy Evans, The Design
Studio and Maryland Art Institute and
Matt Schaefer of Choice Hotels. They
were masterfully addressed by Warren
Feldman with his solid training and
expertise in law and architecture.
Many thanks to our Program
Committee members Ailene Werner of
Samelson and Lindsay Flower of Ann
Lindsay Interiors. We look forward to
more informative and educational

NEWH attended the Association of Luxury Suite Directors Annual Convention from June 29
- July 2 in Denver. Barbara Marcy, President of the Denver Chapter hosted the NEWH
Booth. While attending the HD Show in Las Vegas, a representative from ALSD approached
me to compliment our organization and the successful relevance and involvement we have
in the Hospitality Industry. This conversation leads to an interest in exploring the
networking potential between the two groups. ALSD is composed of facility managers,
suppliers, and Owner’s of sports and entertainment arenas and stadiums. Great potential
networking opportunities for NEWH members and we offer organized educational and
social events for their membership. After exploring the potential during the show, we will
access the best way to form a relationship with their members. This may prove to be an
untapped membership resource for our chapters. We will keep you posted.

THE KEMPER OPEN FUNDRAISER
AN OVERWHELMING SUCCESS!
The fundraising committee of the Washington DC
Metropolitan Chapter was delighted to organize another
fabulous event for the year 2002. In June, the fundraising
committee held a new fundraising venue at the Kemper
Insurance Open Golf Tournament in Potomac, Maryland.
It was a huge success thanks to all of our wonderful and
loyal sponsors. And, the fundraising committee met their
fundraising goal for the year, thanks to our sponsors’
generous contributions and support. Because of the success,
the NEWH Board of Directors will give scholarship money
to deserving students within the hospitality curriculum at
our annual Holiday event in December.
We, the fundraising committee, would also like to extend
our apologies to those Sponsors who were not mentioned
on either the NEWH banner or program or who were just
not given the proper credit they deserve.
This year’s fundraising event was a tremendous success!!
Please join us in December for our Annual Scholarship and
Awards Ceremony and Gala where our President, Cliff
Tuttle, will present the winning students with their
scholarships.
Thank you all!!

AFTER THE KEMPER, A
REKNEWED INTEREST IN
GOLF OUTINGS
Some of you may recall that a few
years ago, this chapter produced
golf tournament fundraisers and
golf outings. After the successful
production of this year ’s
fundraiser at The Kemper, we
heard interest (again).
If you are interested in playing in
a fun golf outing in a best ball
format, please let us know. Lynda
Welte will chase for dates and tee
times with Lisa Tureson of Miller
Fine Art. Lisa served this year as
a volunteer at our fundraiser and
has recently joined a new country
club. She may be able to host an
outing there (depending on their
availability). Otherwise, we will
book at any of the local, fine
courses. We would be looking at
dates in October.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
Heartwalk 2002
Barbara Azzinaro, Cohen Azzinaro
Associates and Team Captain for Team
NEWH in the American Heart
Association’s Annual HEARTWALK
Fundraiser, reminds everyone that this
year’s walk will be on October 19th 2002
in Washington, DC at Freedom Plaza.
Please step out in the fight against our
nation’s number one killer and raise
funds to support the American Heart
Association’s research and community
education programs. Additionally, we
will enjoy a morning of non-competitive
fitness and fun for a great cause. To sign
up for our team, please call Barbara at
703.478.9699.
The Azzinaro Family
Attends American
Heart Association
2002 Gala
Barbara and husband, Lew Azzinaro,
along with their younger daughter,
Rachel (soon to be five years old), were
guest attendees at a private catered
dinner party at the home of the
American Heart Association’s Gala
Chairman, to celebrate, with other
members of the Gala Committee, the
enormous success of this year’s Gala.
The Gala, “Hearts in Bloom 2002” was
held at the Wardman Park Marriott on
June 8th. This was Barbara Azzinaro’s
second year on the Silent Auction
Committee. This year she was in charge
of the ‘Home Decor’ section of the
auction. The live and silent auction
helped raise over $75,000.00 that will go
a long way in assisting the American
Heart Association’s ongoing efforts to
support research and education for
growing concerns of the effects and
incidence of heart disease and stroke in
women. In 1995, the Azzinaro’s lost their
nine week old son, David to the effects
of a congenital heart defect. During that
same year, Barbara’s mother died of a
stroke and in 2000, her father died of a
heart attack. The faces of heart disease
are changing. In 2001, the myth of heart
disease as a “man’s disease” was
diminished as over half a million women
lost their lives to cardiovascular disease
and stroke. However, we are most
fortunate to have a community that
recognizes the need for better health for
everyone.
RACE FOR THE
CURE – A HUGE
SUCCESS!
On Saturday June 1 st, thirty-five
members and friends of the Washington,
DC NEWH chapter successfully
completed the Race for the Cure 5K run/
walk event.
We proudly registered sixteen more
participants than last year, therefore, for
the first time in our history, Washington
DC NEWH met the requirements of
being an official “team”! We thank
everyone (runners, walkers, strollers,
and pledges/sponsors) who was
committed to this cause.
We raised approximately $1500.00 so far,
(and still counting as the sponsorship
money continues to roll in). This is a 50%
increase from last year!
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the
survivors who walked on behalf of
“TEAM NEWH” and we dedicate this
event to all survivors and those who
continue to support and champion the
fight for “The Cure”.

BE AN AMBASSADOR
FORTHE DC CHAPTER!
One of the ways we are increasing the
profile of our chapter and our
organization, as a whole, is through
press releases. If you have press releases
for you or your business that you can
share with our Public Relations Director,
Barbara Azzinaro, we would like to
highlight that information in our own
newsletter and other publications that
NEWH supports. This is another way
that NEWH is a benefit to its members.
NEWH can be “ambassador” for you as
a member and you can do the same for
NEWH. ‘Talk it up’ to as many
hospitality executives as possible. Think
of good, qualified potential members
with whom you can share the goals,
benefits and activities of NEWH.
For more information and assistance,
please contact Barbara Azzinaro, Public
Relations Director at 703-478-9699.
DC MEMBERS HELP
OUT IN RICHMOND
Several NEWH members from the
Washington DC Metropolitan Chapter
had a hand in helping our newly
forming “sister chapter” in the Greater
Richmond area (NEWH Virginia
Chapter). Lynda Welte, Heather
McCarty and I have participated in some
of their “kick off” activities and helped
them by sharing the formation process
of our chapter, founded in 1990. We also
supplied them with information on
NEWH, the international organization
that it has become.
If there are any ideas you would like to
share, other opportunities for expanding
NEWH into new areas or NEWH
advertising venues, please contact me.
