Fitzhugh Lee Camp concluded another year with the swearing in of a new slate of officers at the December meeting. Thanks to both outgoing and incoming officers with a special tip of the hat to outgoing Commander, Michael Virts for his leadership the past two years. Our camp is continuing to grow as we are approaching the 30-member mark. Several members participated in Fredericksburg Sesquicentennial events, proudly representing our Southern Heritage, our camp and the SCV. As we enter 2013, our camp looks forward to another great year of service working with our 5th Brigade Compatriots. Thanks and blessings, Rob Crum Commander Fitzhugh Lee Camp #1805 February 2013 Matthew Fontaine Maury Camp #1722 The SCV Matthew Fontaine Maury Camp 1722 “stay in the trenches.” We attend all events that we are invited to, as well as those we are not invited. We engage in countless events providing an Honor Guard at a moments notice. Commander Crockett, you bear witness of this at, “Cedar Mountain.” I was the bugler. I cannot tell you of how many services we participated in this past year. This is something we do as our duty and respect for our Confederate dead. The price was paid 150 years ago and this is the least we as descendants can do, honor them! This past Christmas our camp placed wreaths along the Southern Cross of Honor at the confederate cemetery in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where the remains of our Confederate dead lay. We placed battle flags at the confederate cemetery in Fredericksburg and Gordonsville for Memorial Day services. We held four Memorial services, one at Gordonsville, one at Spotsylvania, and three at the Confederate Cemetery. I was able to pressure the city into allowing a granite/bronze monument Official Newsletter of the Virginia Division Sons of Confederate Veterans P-27 placed onto City property at Charlotte Street where Matthew Fontaine Maury’s home site was torn down. I could go on and on, these are acts of service off the top of my head. Anniversary Medals were designed and made remembering the Battle of Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. February 2013 I finished a 7-year project finding and correcting spellings of 179 soldiers found along the West Wall at the confederate cemetery along with their war records. We are an active camp. Members in our camp who deserve to be recognized for above and beyond the call of duty are as follows: Chris Ezelle was the designer of the Anniversary Medals. He also is part of the Honor Guard and a man that I am proud to be in the trenches fighting the battles of our cause. Carlton Tomlin in my opinion is the most loyal member in our camp! He is part of the Honor Guard and is at every event. He does everything asked of him without question. He was responsible for buying half of the wreaths out of is pocket at Christmas and headed up the service to lay them in place. When it came time to retrieve the wreaths, Carl took it upon himself to gather them and did so by himself. This is the type of guy he is. Have a great Southern Day! Roy Perry 1st Lt. Commander Matthew Fontaine Maury Camp #1722 TOP: Fredericksburg BOTTOM: Chancellorsville Official Newsletter of the Virginia Division Sons of Confederate Veterans P-28 Pvt. N. B. Ponton Camp #2179 At this time our camp is setting its agenda for the coming year in preparation for participating in various event. We collected 18 bags of trash as we performed our Adopt-A-Highway cleanup detail this past Sunday January 13th. We have a cemetery clean up scheduled prior to our next camp meeting on January 27th. I attended the Lee-Jackson Day ceremony this past Saturday January 19th. Commander Dorsey and the Stonewall Brigade Camp #1296 did a good job and I believe the large gathering of confederates enjoyed the ceremony. Several wreaths were placed on Thomas Jonathan ‘Stonewall’ Jackson’s gravesite by various organizations. While a plane towed a banner overhead chiding the city with, “Shame on Lexington – Honor Lee & Jackson.” 1st Lt. Commander Kelly Barrows was the guest speaker at the ceremony in the Lee Chapel and he made a moving speech about the character of General Robert Edward Lee. CiC Barrows told us that we should use General Lee as an inspiration in our daily lives. Sunday night, I attended the annual Lee-Jackson celebration with the 19th Virginia Infantry Camp #1493 at the Michie Tavern in Charlottesville. Their guest speaker was Bill Young who did a great job speaking in first person as George W. Finley. George was a Lieutenant in the 56th Virginia Infantry and he was one of the few Southerners who got over the wall at Cemetery Ridge. He was captured and spent the next two years in six Federal prisons. He vowed that if he survived the war he would become a minister. He eventually returned home and became the pastor of Tinkling Springs Presbyterian Church in Fishersville, Virginia. The food a the Tavern was great as was the company of the members of Camp #1493 making it a most enjoyable evening for my wife and I. Respectfully submitted, Ted Crockett 5th Brigade Commanding Tinkling Springs Presbyterian Church Official Newsletter of the Virginia Division Sons of Confederate Veterans P-35 Commander at Large Southwest Virginia Museum Announces 2012 Festival of Trees Winners Aaron Davis, Chief Ranger/Interpreter, Southwest Virginia Museum The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park would like to congratulate the winners of the 17th Annual Festival of Trees.
