It is written by Jane Green and titled "family pictures". It follows two women who found themselves both married to the same man and all that two families demand of the two wives. It is written well and certainly tells us how two wives and their children react and act when the truth comes known, It will be in our library next week. Page 5 4 years! 3 years! 4 years! JOKE OF THE WEEK……… A woman who died found herself standing outside the Pearly Gates, being greeted by St. Peter. She asked him, "Oh, is this place what I really think it is? It's so beautiful. Did I really make it to heaven?" To which St. Peter replied, "Yes, my dear, these are the Gates to Heaven. But you must do one more thing before you can enter." The woman was very excited, and asked of St. Peter what she must do to pass through the gates. "Spell a word," St. Peter replied. "What word?" she asked. "Any word," answered St. Peter. "It's your choice." The woman promptly replied, "Then the word I will spell is love.L-o-v-e." St. Peter congratulated her on her good fortune to have made it to Heaven, and asked her if she would mind taking his place at the gates for a few minutes while he went to the bathroom. "I'd be honored," she said, "but what should I do if someone comes while you are gone?" St. Peter reassured her, and instructed the woman to simply have any newcomers to the Pearly Gates to spell a word as she had done. So the woman is left sitting in St. Peter's chair and watching the beautiful angels soaring around her when a man approaches the gates. She realizes it is her loser husband. "What happened?" she cried, "Why are you here?" Her husband stared at her for a moment, then said, "I was so drunk when I left your funeral, I was in an accident. And now I am here? Did I really make it to Heaven?" To which the woman replied, "Not yet. You must spell a word first." "What word?" he asked. The woman responded, "Czechoslovakia." Page 6 DATES TO KEEP IN MIND…………. Page 9 WORD OF THE WEEK………… Zeitgeber \TSYTE-gay-ber\ noun an environmental agent or event that provides the stimulus setting or resetting a biological clock of an organism EXAMPLES "Food availability seems to be a weaker zeitgeber than light. Although food is more essential than light for an animal's survival, light exerts a finer control than food availability over the activity rhythm." — From Roberto Refinetti's 2006 book Circadian Physiology, Second Edition "Night-shift workers also struggle, he says, because they don't get the environmental and social cues that help adjust the circadian clock. The most important of these cues, called zeitgebers … is sunlight. But a zeitgeber could also be a scrambled-egg breakfast or children coming home from school in the afternoon." — From an article by Tara Parker-Pope in New York Times Magazine, November 20, 2011 DID YOU KNOW? Zeitgebers are nature's alarm clocks—both biologically and etymologically. The word "zeitgeber" derives from a combination of two German terms, "Zeit," which means "time," and "Geber," which means "giver"—so a "zeitgeber" is literally a "time giver." In nature, zeitgebers tend to be cyclic or recurring patterns that help keep the body's circadian rhythms operating in an orderly way. For plants and animals, the daily pattern of light and darkness and the warmer and colder temperatures between day and night serve as zeitgebers, cues that keep organisms functioning on a regular schedule. For humans, societally imposed cycles, such as the schedule of the work or school day and regular mealtimes, can become zeitgebers as well. But when he takes Marion's place in their church's very unconventional choir, he begins to find joy in life again. A Review: This movie made a surprisingly emotional connection. The love, the struggle and the ultimate joy in this film. Vanessa Redgrave is marvelous in her brief time on screen: a woman who sees the quality of the man she loves, despite his curmudgeonly behavior. Terrance Stamp portrays a man who loses the love and light of his life but finds his inner joy and peace. A genuine love story for older viewers. A Brit film that if done by Hollywood would have become overly sappy and pretentious. Here we are dealing with terminal illness and at the same time a "Young@Heart" type of choir so you get tragedy, comedy, and disdain all rolled up in a fine little film. Page 14 CAN YOU FIND IT! This Week 6 of you found the image to the left – which just happens to be one of the dumb-bells on the Fitness Room sign! You guys are getting to be good at this! Congratulations to Jean S., John E. and Sue P., Harold & Eleanor M. and Jane D.! You all have a sharp eye for detail……. Let’s see how many of you can identify the location of the image to the right……………… Think of this as a good excuse to get some exercise and to do some exploring! No hints for this one! Please put your answers in the Suggestion Box! FROM THE SUGGESTION BOX A suggestion was made that we consider increasing the variety of snacks that are used at various activities. Selecting the right food – be it for meals or for snacks is a challenge. The best resolution is to speak with either Diane or Chef Brad --- because knowing what isn’t enjoyed is only half of the problem --- the other is knowing what to offer instead! Page 15 CLOSING NOTES……………. Greetings All -----------Attention all Ladies! Be sure to save Thursday May 1st for a Very Special Women’s Luncheon at noon. Details will be forthcoming – but it is already looking to be a very spectacular event! Mardi Gras (which translates as Fat Tuesday) is this Tuesday ---- and I want to remind you that there will be a surprise guest arriving at 3:30 --- So be sure that you do not leave the party early! Special Thanks are due to Susan Humphrey and Carolyn Sutcliffe for all the work that they have done to both bring the ‘Veteran’s Book’ up to date – and to make needed repairs. We can be proud not only of our Members who are Veterans – but also of those like Susan and Carolyn who help us to remember them! An Osprey Update --- A Message from Ian MacLeod “Once the snow melts sufficiently, we will install the pole and a nesting platform (with a complete nest). This will be done in late March. The cell tower company still cannot make a decision on removing the current nest so we will put up a new pole for now and give the ospreys a choice. If the cell tower people cannot make up their mind by March 30 then the old nest will stay there through the Spring and Summer (if it is occupied by the ospreys) and we can try to have the next by next year. Either way the Ospreys will have a choice of homes. I will try to make the new nest really exciting.” Ian Macleod. The Fire Alarm tonight was an accidental activation by a Member and unfortunately for those who had to listen to it --- it cannot be silenced until the Fire Department arrives and authorizes us to do so. Thank you for patience and understanding. Have a Great Week ------------- Howie Page 16
