It is no secret that a community with a dedication to food grown at its finest, creates something very special. The farmto-table movement has become increasingly popular over the last decade, giving Yreka the opportunity to show off a fleet of experienced growers, producers and artisans. The interactive website provides an introduction to the growers, producers, and artisans putting Northstate on the map. “Visitors to the site can use the map to search for local food resources, and producers now have a centralized on-line community,” said SEDC Executive Director Tonya Dowse. Long time experts and young, energetic growers are putting Yreka on the map with food enthusiasts who are interested in the practice of organically grown meats, fruits and vegetables. Purchasing from local farmers and herders puts money back into local economies and supports the livelihood of small, local operators so that they can continue to produce fresh, delicious, local foods. “Right now people are interested in the story of our region’s farmers and ranchers,” explains the Yreka Chamber of Commerce. “Many producers are opening their doors to farm tours showcasing wildlife habitat and sustainable growing strategies.” “Supporting the local economy, helping promote economic growth — that benefits everyone,” says the Yreka Chamber. “If we eat locally, we are helping our own economy and supporting our unique region. We invite you to celebrate and enjoy the bounty of the Yreka.” In 2014, the Siskiyou Economic Development Council launched the Shasta Cascade Farm Finder, a beautiful inspiring website, celebrating Northern California’s bountiful agriculture. St. Marks Preservation Square, home to Yreka Preservation, leads the parade of the quaint, nostalgic features that surround the Siskiyou County Courthouse Square. The Siskiyou County Courthouse is one of the oldest in the state and has existed without any fire damage from the beginning to today. In 1871, Susan B. Anthony addressed a large audience right from the courthouse steps and gave a passionate speech. For a number of years, the Siskiyou County Courthouse held one of the biggest gold collections south of Alaska. This unique building was originally designed by a shipwright and features fascinating construction. St. Marks Preservation Square is situated across the street from the historic Siskiyou County Courthouse Square and a tour and narrative of the fascinating history of the Courthouse and happenings on that block can also be provided. Father James Croke, working on the Oregon mission, was traveling on horseback through the section around Jacksonville, and tradition has it that he came down as far as Yreka to hold services for the miners. While St. Joseph’s Church was dedicated May 3, 1867, it would be just four years later on the Fourth of July, that fire broke out in a Chinese laundry on Miner Street, creating a raging, three-day fire; it engulfed and destroyed both the church and parish house. It took four years before arrangements for a new church edifice was complete. Construction of the present St. Joseph’s Church began in 1875. The cornerstone was laid in September, 1876. On Christmas Eve, Midnight Mass inaugurated services in the new church. Butte Street Historic Homes From 4th street, turn up Butte Street to view a number of historical Victorian homes. Her favorite subjects include wild animals and nature. She is always searching for fresh inspiration, new perspectives, and wondrous surprises. Her passion for photography and the beauty of nature has led her to forego a career in Information Technology in favor of getting out with her camera and getting her boots muddy. Utilizing a very high resolution camera, many of her prints are available in sizes up to 6 feet, some as large as 9 feet. She hopes that bringing nature’s beauty to people through her photographs will help connect people to the natural world. One protest held that the roads “were not passable, not even jackassable!” Several counties in southern Oregon and northern California joined in. The State of Jefferson concept catches the curiosity of historians and tourists alike as Siskiyou County moves in and out of the spotlight through various efforts to revive the long standing State of Jefferson movement. In November 1941, a “revolt,” represented by a roadblock and a Proclamation of Independence was staged along Old Highway 99 south of Yreka. Members of the Yreka 20/30 Club passed out the declaration stating that “patriotic Jeffersonians intend to secede each Thursday until further notice.” The Great Seal of the State of Jefferson was etched on a gold pan: XX (signifying a Double-Cross by both Salem and Sacramento). The movement gained momentum and culminated in a gubernatorial race where Judge Childs, from Crescent City, won the governorship. That was December 4, 1941. Unfortunately, on December 7th, 1941, secession took a backseat to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Even today, the dream of an independent state lives on. Just one year after a bill to create the ‘’State of Jefferson’ died in committee, THE DAILY ALTA OF CALIFORNIA of San Francisco suggested that the miners in northern California and southern Oregon would benefit if a ‘new state’ were created (December 19, 1853). In 1854-55, the State Assembly tried to split California into three states: “Shasta,” “Colorado,” and “California”. But the bill lapsed and the idea was shelved. By 1941, local communities were clearly behind the idea. The depression fueled anger over what residents perceived as unequal treatment by both Oregon and California’s state Visitors can travel the Jefferson State Scenic Byway—north of Yreka—also known as Hwy 96, where the Klamath River meanders west to Happy Camp. Legend has it that Bigfoot, or Sasquatch, roams the isolated forests found here. Historic locations include the small but fascinating museums dotting the county, including the Dunsmuir Museum, Fort Jones Museum, Heritage Junction of McCloud Historic Center, Sisson Museum in Mount Shasta, the Weed Historic Lumber Town Museum, Klamath National Forest Interpretive Museum in Yreka, the main Siskiyou County Museum in Yreka, Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair-Museum of Local History in Tulelake, and the Native Daughters of the Golden West Museum in Etna. One of the main reasons for this national recognition is the Asante heart attack response or STEMI program. A partnership of Asante, Southern Oregon Cardiology, five hospitals and emergency medical services in several counties—including Siskiyou County--this task force was created to achieve one goal: save more lives in heart attack. This regional heart attack response team coordinates paramedics, emergency departments, and the cardiac catheterization laboratory at Asante Rogue Regional for rapid identification, triage, and treatment of severe heart attack or ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients Participating ambulance services use a 12lead EKG (electrocardiogram) in the field to identify heart attack patients before they arrive at the hospital. The heart team has time to prepare and the patient goes directly to the cardiac catheterization lab at Asante Rogue Regional where a cardiologist opens blocked arteries. As a result of this regional, collaborative effort, mortality rates for heart attacks are among the lowest in the country, dropping from 8 percent in 2001 to just 1.8 percent today when patients come to the hospital by ambulance. From its humble beginnings, to its present facility with three floors of exhibit galleries and an Outdoor Museum that displays original and recreated buildings from all over Siskiyou County. The Native American Gallery features a comprehensive portrayal of Indian life in upper Northern California. The gallery explores the cultural histories and artistry of local tribes including the Achomawi, Karuk, Konomihu, Modoc, and Shasta Indians. The Trappers Gallery presents a wealth of material relating to the acquisition of fur-bearing animals in the area during the early 1800s. Highlights includes an original clothing and personal adornment items, weapons, survival skills and a re-creation of an 1830s Scott Valley spike camp used by trapper Stephen Hall Meek. The Gold Mining Exhibit showcases the successes, struggles, and disappointments encountered by those gold-seeking individuals who flooded Siskiyou County during the gold rush days. Included in the exhibit are tools, equipment and provisions that highlight various extractive methods and features an extensive photo gallery of mines and miners. The Chinese in Siskiyou County Exhibit contains many well-preserved artifacts that document the life and times of the Chinese in Northern California gold towns. This display helps to educate on the contribution this group of people made to the growth of Siskiyou County. The Pioneer Settlement Exhibit brings to life the trials and tribulations of those hardy early souls who endured months of travel, exhausting days, and unpredictable weather conditions in search of a new life in the west. The exhibit features a life-size diorama of a covered wagon camp in the twilight hours, as well as artifacts and information on early settlers. The Timber Industry in Siskiyou County began with the realization that the thousands of acres of prime timber would supply the needed wood for flumes, tunnels, and other gold mining operations. Later, the region became the source for lumber shipped all over the United States. The Timber Exhibit chronicles the history of this industry from its meager beginnings to present day. HISTORIANS ARE INVITED The Research Library contains a wealth of information for those researching Siskiyou County and family history. With photographs, manuscripts, books, newspapers, and other printed ephemera, as well as maps and an extensive news clipping file, the general public is sure to find what they are looking for.
