Dickens on Main Promises to be Bigger and
Better with Several New Additions
Imagine your kids on a
12’ high snow slide that
runs between 60 and 70’
along the back of Main
Plaza. Can you hear the
squeals of joy as they
launch their sled from
the top?
Or, picture your kiddos
posing for photos with
stars of the Quenedit
Dance Theater and
School, a San Antonio
Ballet Company, dressed
up as Nutcracker characters, bringing that classic
Christmas ballet to life
right before their eyes.
And, envision your
whole family on Main
Plaza toe-tappin’ to the
sounds of Two Tons of
Steel, the area’s most
beloved band and the
headline concert that will
close out Dickens on
Saturday, November
29th from 9 to 10:30
p.m.
There’s a lot more in
store for you when you
participate in the 2014
Dickens on Main Festival later this month.
The Hill Country Arts
Council is gearing up for
two afternoons and evenings of creativity for
kids. They’ve partnered
with the Public Library to
provide a station where
kids can write letters to
Santa. They’ve teamed
with The Flower Shoppe
and the YMCA to provide crafts and games at
Main Plaza. Kids can
learn how to make ornaments and garlands that
mirror those made by
children during the Victorian era that they can
take home and remember
the amazing time they
had at Dickens on Main
this year.
You can’t help but be
swept back in time when
you see the carolers fill-
ing the air with traditional Christmas songs, hear
the words of A Christmas Carol in Dickens
Village, touch the beautiful handmade gifts being
offered in Artisan’s Alley.
Don’t miss a minute of it!
Dickens on Main runs
the Friday and Saturday
immediately following
Thanksgiving from 10
a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Celebrate Christmas with
your family, your friends
and your neighbors on
Main Street November
28 and 29.

Hunting & Gathering Offers Variety of Giclee Prints
The large prints on canvas
that we have in Hunting and
Gathering are usually not
hand-painted but created by
a process called Giclee (zhee
–klay) This is a printing
process that uses faderesistant, archival inks to
accurately reproduce the
original artwork. This printing is done on heavy cotton
canvas and is then textured
in several different ways to
create the look of a handpainted oil or acrylic. One of
our favorite finishes is a
crackle which looks very
much like the aging of a very
old oil painting. We are able
to special order giclee prints in
a huge range of topics. There
are beautiful animal subjects
and the one shown here is just
one of many fabulous abstracts. Check with us if you
would like to see the range we
have access to.

HCM honored with 2014 Baldrige National Quality Award
On Nov. 10, the U.S.
Department of Commerce announced that
Hill Country Memorial is one of four recipients of the
2014 Malcolm Baldrige National
Quality Award, the nation’s highest
honor for performance excellence
through innovation, improvement
and visionary leadership in both
public and private organizations.
Twenty-two organizations competed
for the award in one of six categories: manufacturing, service, small
business, health care, education and
nonprofit, including government
agencies.
“We are indebted to our community,
supporters, physicians, volunteers
and every single staff member for
this remarkable accomplishment,”
said Jayne Pope, Hill Country Memorial CEO. “We embarked on this
journey several years ago, and to be
recognized with a Baldrige Award
signifies our continued commitment
to improving and providing excellent service in all we do.”
The 2014 Baldrige Award recipients
were evaluated by an independent
board of examiners in seven areas
defined by the Baldrige criteria:
leadership; strategic planning; customer focus; measurement, analysis
and knowledge management; workforce focus; operations focus; and
results.
The Baldrige Award is the latest in a
series of accolades for HCM. Truven
Health Analytics has named HCM
one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® for the past three years, and

Electrolab Building New State-of-the-Art Facility in Boerne
On May 27, 2014, Electrolab’s
owners and associates officially
broke ground on their new corporate headquarters, which includes a state of the art engineering and manufacturing facility, at 159 Enterprise Parkway,
Boerne, Texas. Electrolab’s current headquarters are located in
San Antonio with a sales office
in The Woodlands, Texas. The
new headquarters will be approximately 25 miles north of
the current facility. The company will continue to maintain a
sales office in The Woodlands,
Texas.
A privately-owned corporation
founded in 1976, Electrolab has
grown over the past 38 years
into a leading innovator in the
engineering and manufacture of
sensors and controllers for the
oil and gas, water management,
and industrial control industries.
The company currently employs
40 associates and is expecting
significant growth in the future.
This facility positions Electrolab
to ramp up production for its
current products, as well as several new products to be introduced in the near future. Electrolab’s current workforce includes electrical, mechanical and
specialty engineers; professional
positions; and skilled production
employees. “Even with more
efficient, streamlined processes
and our hard-working dedicated
workforce, we are bursting at
the seams of our current facility.
We look forward to moving into
our new building, which will
afford us room to grow,” said
HEB & BISD: Great Partners
Boerne ISD agriculture teachers
Meghan Marler (left) and Joanna
Marsh team up with HEB general manager Matt Pedroza on a
recent shopping spree to help
equip the new Food Technology
courses that will be offered at
the Boerne high schools in the
spring. Registration for the
courses has been brisk, outpac-
ing initial expectations and
necessitating additional appliances and kitchen gadgets to
equip the classrooms. HEB
generously stepped up to
assist the school district and
the classrooms will be fully
equipped when students
come to class in January.
Todd Mathias, Co-owner.
Electrolab plans to build a
31,000square foot facility, where
they will continue to produce
their own printed circuit boards
and high-temperature electronics
in-house, using state of the art
equipment. The company is
employing local professionals in
the design and construction of
the facility. SA Partnership, with
offices in Boerne, is the Architect and HMC, Inc. also with
offices in Boerne, is the general
contractor. “We’ve put together
a great team to lead the building
process and know the facility
will be one our employees and
the Boerne community will take
pride in,” said Sean Drees, Electrolab’s President and Coowner.

help you to boost your Google Rankings
by Madhu Chadha, WSI - Internet Profit Web Solutions, (210) 858-9302

What is Adaptive SEO
Google Updates like google
panda, penguin and hummingbird have made it
harder than ever for website
owners to maintain top
search engine rankings.
Gone are the days of tricking your way to a number
one position. Today if you
want to be on page one of
Google you need to invest
long-term in best practice
SEO- content and social a
powerful combination we
like to call adaptive SEO.
Here are five components
have an effective adaptive
SEO strategy-Keyword and competitive research. At the core
of every successful SEO
strategy is a comprehensive
keyword research component one that includes discovering highly converting
non-branded keywords as
well as your branded key-
words you want to dominate
the results for.
Technical SEO fundamentals. The technical fundamentals and foundation of
your website needs to be
correct from the outset,
things like load speed structure and user experience
through responsive web design -all play a part in how
the search engines rank your
site pages.
Optimized content marketing plan. Adaptive SEO
cannot be done successfully
without the inclusion of con-
tent marketing. Your content
should help your target audience through the buying process and be distributed
effectively through your social
networks.
Publish socialize share. The
social signals generated from
the top social media channels
can be used to increase your
discoverability in the search
engines and also help you distribute your content to practically anywhere in the world.
Improve Benchmark report. Regular analysis of the
data is essential. Reviewing
your position data, backlinks,
social signals, organic visit,
conversions and keywords are
all critical in helping you make
the right decisions, helping you
decide what should happen
next.

Urban Defense Training Comes to Boerne
Meet Kevin Durio, the founder
and Chief Instructor for Urban
Defense Training - UDT.
They specialize in training for police & military, but also train the
general public as well. They
moved their headquarters to
Boerne from the Dallas/Fort
Worth area because of the hill
country, the people, the weather,
the outdoor activities and places
to go & the family value atmosphere.
Kevin has friends here that were a
big part of the decision to move,
but once he visited he knew this
was the place for his family and
his business.
UDT is looking forward to being
involved with the Chamber and
the community as much as possible. They are to here to serve
Boerne and the surrounding area
with their special brand of training, but also look forward to being
an integral piece of this gorgeous
part of Texas.

The Leading Edge: Leaders Give Thanks
by Steve Skarke, The Merced Group, LLC, (281)979-4563
www.leadingelements.com
This month we celebrate
together a most treasured
national
holiday
….Thanksgiving. It is a time
to give thanks for the blessings in our life with friends
and family.
Effective leaders know that
they need to practice the
spirit of Thanksgiving
throughout the year. The
fifth practice of the Leadership Challenge teaches us to
“Encourage the Heart”. By
focusing on the positive contributions that individuals
and teams make for the organization we can reinforce
the behaviors that bring success.
It sounds easy, but actually
it is quite hard. You have to
pay attention to the details
and make sure that you really know what is going on.
Recognition can be risky and
can actually be harmful if
not done properly.
My strategy has been to get
as many people involved as
possible. I use my team to
keep me informed and investigate the good deeds to
confirm what really happened and who was involved. We also created an
employee driven recognition
team that develops new ideas for showing appreciation.
The most successful has
been a “peer to peer” process
that allows anyone to publicly say thanks to another
team member.
Finally, be sure to use the
occasion to publicly tie the
recognition to a specific
shared value. It may be related to safety, quality,
teamwork, etc. By helping
others make the connection,
you are reinforcing your
commitment to the groups
shared values.
So during this holiday season
take time to encourage your
team by saying “thanks” and
then keep the practice going
with small, simple recognition activities.

Legal Sidebar: Do I Really Need a Will
By Bill McNaught, Attorney-at-Law, McNaught Law Firm, (210) 202-0088
http://www.mcnaughtlawfirm.com/
Do I really need a will?
Ever one needs a final will to
protect estate value and ease
troubles for survivors.
With a will, the executor
obtains Letters of Testamentary, essentially a power of
attorney to take actions to
wind down the estate with
no judicial oversight. The
executor collects assets,
compiles claims, pays debts
& expenses, distributes
property under the Will and
files only a simple inventory
and list of claims.
Without a will, the executor
has to hire a lawyer to draft
motions, set hearings, present evidence, obtain rulings, draft orders, and then
acts to wind down the estate
while reporting in detail to
the court.
This increases costs, depletes value to beneficiaries,
slows the process, and frustrates families.
