A Message from your Manager …..
On behalf of the entire Waegwoltic team, I am delighted to once again welcome back all of our
members, and to offer our new members an introduction to the myriad of exciting, active, and
high-quality programs we offer our diverse membership.
This year, we‘re so pleased to introduce our new Waegwoltic Summer Day Camp—Camp Waeg—
for our membership, suitable for ages 5-11, and running from 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to
Friday (excluding holidays). This camp has been designed from the ground-up by our
programming team to offer Waeg members a convenient, safe, active, and unparalleled
environment for their child this summer. The camp offers convenient drop-off and pick-up
times, an affordable and healthy (optional) lunch plan, exciting weekly themes, and so much
more. This is the camp our members have been waiting for, and we‘re thrilled for it to get
underway. Spots are limited, so be sure to register early to reserve your spot! Registration for
Summer Camp and all youth programming will begin on March 29th, at 10am.
Often, we hear members say that the Waeg is their ―cottage in the city‖. Again and again, we see
members and their families join us every day of the week – some with 80+ years of membership
under their belt, and others whose families join the Club generation after generation, all creating
summer memories that will last a lifetime. We hope you enjoy every aspect of your time at the
Club and take full advantage of everything the Waeg has to offer. As we enter into the 2016
season, it is our genuine wish to make The Waegwoltic the best, most desired club of its kind in
the country. To that end, we continue to review every element of the club and its operations. To
assist in that process, we sincerely extend you the opportunity to assist us in developing a
blueprint for the future of the Club.
There are a number of ways you can help us - the first being through our various committees. If
you are interested in being an active member of a department committee, please contact either me
or Lisa, our member services director, to put your name forward and get involved. We also invite
you to join our opt-in departmental mailing lists, to keep in touch with what‘s happening in
each of our departments. Your feedback is crucial to the vitality of the club. We invite you to send
us your suggestions, questions, and comments via our online suggestion box. We will continue
to circulate surveys to members throughout the spring & summer, and appreciate your
participation in assisting us with the ongoing process of improving our wonderful club.
Thank you for joining us for the 2016 season. We look forward to another year of making the
Waeg a regular part of your life and an active part of your family!
Best Regards,
David Greaves
Chief Operating Officer

ADULT:
Lifestyle & Fitness Calendars
A Message from your Manager . . .
Attached you will find the details of our adult lifestyle programming for 2016. Building on the
successes of last year, we‘re very much looking forward to hosting weekly evening events for our
adult members. We‘ll be bringing back old favourites—like our ―Roll Your Own Sushi‖ class, and
our ―Vino and Vinyasa‖ event—and we‘ll introduce some exciting new opportunities for our
members to spend their evening at the club whether it‘s to get active, get social, have some fun, or
all of the above! We will continue to add additional fun, interesting and informative programs to
the schedule presented here, and carry this momentum into the fall and winter seasons. The
concept is simple: we have a beautiful venue, a setting and membership like no other, and we
want to create a club atmosphere where like-minded members can spend an afternoon or evening
expanding their horizons in a fun and comfortable environment. If you have ideas you would like
to suggest for Adult Programming at The Waeg, feel free to contact me directly at
david@waegwoltic.ca, or Geoff Tobin, our interim Program Manager at geoff@waegwoltic.ca. We
can also both be reached at the Main Office on 902.429.2822.
Best Regards
David Greaves

Extreme Fitness
This camp will improve overall fitness through a variety of high intensity circuits. The circuits will
have an emphasis on cardiovascular and muscular endurance, core strength and muscle toning.
The circuits will be designed to incorporate all muscle groups in the body. Each day will be
different and your body will be challenged and stressed in many ways. This can be achieved
through varying the number of repetitions, time adjustments and increasing the difficulty of the
exercise/station. Open to all ages and fitness levels. Please note: Those registering for 2
classes/week are welcome to choose the days they attend from all available dates.
Here are some recent testimonials from our Extreme Fitness group:
“With a vigorous workout and a fun group of regulars, I get the physical and mental boost
I need to handle work and family life!" -Richard H.
“The class is a great combination of cardio and strength training, but designed for
inclusion - we never leave anyone behind” - Dale D.
“Kim Houston is a knowledgeable, dedicated and positive instructor who is able to adapt
his class to every fitness level [...] I have been to at least 5 other fitness classes in HRM
and this is definitely one of the best!” -Laura B.
“Excellent coaching, beautiful scenery, and genuine camaraderie, push my limits well
beyond what I accomplish when exercising alone” - Margaret C.
“If you are looking for Richard Simmons, this isn't the class for you- no spandex or
headbands in sight. Kim's class challenges you with something new every time [...] It is
always interesting as no two classes are the same. “You won't be disappointed. I'm fitter
now than I was in my 20s and that was a long time ago” - Jeff D.

YOUTH BEACH VOLLEYBALL:
Recreational Programming
Beach Volleyball is one of our most popular rec programs at the Waeg. The program is designed
for a wide variety of participants and ranges from introducing beginners to the sport to finetuning the volleyball techniques of more advanced athletes. Our team of experienced,
instructors is lead by Jane Delahunt of the Dalhousie Tigers. Each member of our enthusiastic
instructor team strives to provide a productive and fun learning environment for new and
upcoming volleyball players.
Participants in the three recreational levels can look forward to energetic group activities,
explanations and demonstrations of fundamental skills, movement and skill drills, and modified
volleyball game-play.
Volunteer Oppurtunity
The Waeg beach volleyball program is offering the chance for experienced, energetic athletes
(14+) to pass on their passion for the game to the younger generation of players.
During the recreational lessons all summer long, players have an opportunity to assist the
coaching staff in running the class. This is a chance to gain volunteer hours, be a mentor to
younger athletes and to develop coaching skills under the influence of our experienced staff. No
coaching experience necessary!
44
For every 45-minute class, we will be accepting 1-3 volunteers to assist in running drills and
demonstrating skills along with other various coaching tasks.
Interested? Email volleyball@waegwoltic.ca with your name, your age, and a brief summary of
your volleyball experience. A schedule for the volunteers will be determined based on
availability. We‘re looking forward to hearing from you as soon as possible, but feel free to apply
at any point during the summer!
NEW MORNING VOLLEYBALL OFFERINGS
We‘ve changed up our volleyball programming to accommodate morning lessons for those
members who are unable to make afternoon commitments. If you‘ve wanted to get the kids started
in volleyball but haven‘t been able to fit it in your schedule, now is your chance! Spreading out
our volleyball programming also means there is always a court available for member free play.

Waegwoltic Sailing School
The Junior Sailing Program at the Waegwoltic Club is focused on providing instruction in a fun,
safe and positive environment. We strive to teach practical theory and on-water skills while
emphasizing camaraderie and a passion for the sport. The Junior Sailing Program models itself on
the CANSail program that was developed by Sail Canada (formerly known as the Canadian
Yachting Association, CYA) and implemented in 2012. All of our instructors and coaches have
received training and certification based on Sail Canada‘s national standards.
CANSail programming means lots of time on the water in a safe, fun and active learning
environment, with relatively less time spent in a classroom. Sailors learn the skills and enter into
fun and challenging experiences suited to their age and stage of development. The programming is
designed to get - and keep - sailors excited about sailing for life!
Regattas & Parental Support
The racing and recreational streams both have different demands on the students enrolled and
their parental supports. These are important points to consider when deciding what to sign up
for. Recreational sailors do not attend any weekend Regattas. This means that the children will
simply have to be picked up and dropped off at the Waeg each day. No additional transportation
of children or equipment is required. With the racing stream, sailors will be attending weekend
Regattas. The amount of involvement, and the distance of travel varies by program and the
Regatta schedule. Sailors will also be training out of other locations (Bedford, St. Margaret‘s
Bay, Chester, P.E.I, etc.) This is a necessary aspect of the program, and one that is usually the
highlight of the sailor‘s summers. To make this happen, parental support and involvement is
absolutely necessary.
For more information on the Waegwoltic Junior Sailing Program, please email
sailing@waegwoltic.ca or call the Main Office on 902 429 2822 ext.2. See below for more
information on regatta fees and attendance.

YOUTH: SPRING & Fall
NEW Spring & Fall Training
Spring & Fall Training Sessions
Why wait until the summer? Some of the season‘s best sailing happens during the spring & fall,
with spectacular winds and fabulous sailing weather. Our new spring & fall training sessions are
designed to deliver quality on-water experience for intermediate and advanced sailors looking to
stay sharp leading up to, and after the primary sailing season. Thinking of racing this year? Get a
jump-start on the fundamental boat handling techniques and tactics before ARK! Not racing but
want to hit the water early and learn to master the more challenging winds of Canadian spring
and fall? Our new program is a great way to learn to master the winds in a fun and safe learning
environment. Training sessions are skill based and dynamic, providing the perfect opportunity to
build racing skills and sailing confidence.
This new training program is designed for sailors who have completed CANSail 2 or are registering
for Opti Learn-To-Race and at least 11 years of age. Exceptions will be made based on skill and
ability. All members under the age of 11 must be evaluated by the Head of Sailing before
registering for the program. If enough beginners express their interest in spring & fall sailing, we
would also consider adding a beginner coach to the training session. If you‘re interested in a
spring & fall beginner sailing program, please contact the Main Office on 902.429.2822 ext.2 or
email sailing@waegwoltic.ca.

NEW - Wet Feet Full Day Adventure Camp (Ages 6-7)
The Wet Feet program is designed for children 6 and 7 years old with no sailing experience. We
introduce your children to sailing in a fun and safe environment in our sheltered, protected
harbour. The program begins with 2-3 children per boat, who work towards sailing a boat on their
own. The course includes an introduction to sailing and boat-handling skills. Our trained and
certified instructors are chosen for their exceptional skills working with children. When we aren't
on the water, we are taking in the best that The Waeg has to offer, with afternoon dips in the Lido,
trips to the Dingle and, of course, participating in all the famed Waeg Recreation events such as
the Great Water Fight and Sail & Bail. The program builds friendships, confidence and selfesteem.
An information package on camp activities, contact information and ‗what to bring‘ will be sent to
each parent after registration.

Basic Sailing (Recreation)
The Basic Sailing CANSail 1&2 program is the foundation class for children starting off with little
or no sailing experience. The focus of this class is to get out on the water, become familiar with
boats and sailing terminology, to learn and develop fundamental sailing techniques, and of
course, have fun! All classes are taught under the close supervision of three CANSail 1&2
instructors. Successful completion of this class (CANSail 1&2) will allow sailors to join the Opti
Race Team, or Advanced Sailing. The program uses Echos, a double handed sloop boat that allows
for
interaction
among
sailors,
and
a
fun
learning
environment.
To accommodate busy summer schedules, the Waeg offers both a one-month Basic Sailing
program as well as a condensed two-week version. Regardless of which offering you take
advantage of, sailors will learn everything they need to know to get out on the water and have
some fun! Sailors may wish to register for both condensed versions of the program but they
should expect to see an overlap in material. Please pay careful attention to dates when registering
for this program.

Race Teams:
The Waeg Race Teams introduce sailors to the world of competitive dinghy racing. Classes are
offered in the Opti, 420 and Laser boats and progress sailors from a beginner racing level to
high-caliber competitive teams. Teams will train and compete in Regattas throughout Nova
Scotia and the rest of the Maritimes. Teams are taught by experienced coaches and will work
closely with provincial and national teams.
Opti Race Team
The Optimist (Opti) CANSail 3&4 race team builds on the fundamental boat handling skills that
were acquired in CANSail 1&2. This class is excellent for sailors with an interest in competitive
racing. Although based out of the Waegwoltic, the team will train in Bedford, St. Margaret‘s Bay
and Chester. This is a very exciting and intensive program, which makes for a great introduction
to the wonderful world of dinghy racing. A weekend Regatta schedule will be made available before
the start date of each program.

program. Radials, Lasers, and 29ers are recommended. This is a high-caliber class, designed for
racers who display maturity and a high level of competency. It is imperative that sailors are
already competent in winds up to 20 knots. This class will have a strong focus on results, and will
be taught by an experienced race coach. The team will be working closely with provincial and
53
national teams/coaches, and will be attending all major regattas (including CORK and Fruit

2016 Tennis:
Youth Programming
The Waegwoltic Club has more than 75 years of experience delivering the most innovative,
exciting, high quality junior and adult programs in Atlantic Canada. The new Waeg lesson
pathway is based around the popular progressive tennis model which uses a systematic
progression of court sizes, balls and racquets to scale the game down to an appropriate level for
children ages 5-16 years old. The Waegwoltic Tennis Program is focused on providing instruction
in a fun and positive environment. The Recreational & Competitive streams presented in our
tennis lesson pathway both have different demands on the player enrolled and their parental
supports. These are important points to consider when deciding what to sign-up for.
If you have any questions about our new tennis lesson pathway, please do not hesitate to contact
us at the Main Office on 902.429.2822 ext.2 or email geoff@waegwoltic.ca .

Both Red Ball stages are taught in the half-court format. Half Court tennis is the first stage of our
progressive tennis program at the Waeg. The cooperative skills taught at these levels will lead to
the development of the basic strokes and fundamentals of tennis. The Red Ball program is broken
into two stages: one for more experienced kids and the other for kids who are just starting out.
Please use the above registration aid to determine your child‘s placement. At any point during the
lesson session our instructors may decide to move your child from one level to the next. A 19‖-21‖

HIGH PERFORMANCE: Competitive Pathway
Young athletes participating in our high performance tennis offerings will receive high quality
tennis training from the top coaches in Atlantic Canada. On court coaching is only one aspect of a
young athlete‘s education in our high performance programs. These programs will educate
youngsters on many aspects of training and competing. This includes fitness, injury prevention,
tactics, strategy and mental training. With our new lesson pathway, promising athletes can be
identified faster and nurtured more effectively. To ensure each players success in the competitive
stream at the Waeg, the decision to join our high performance programs should be made in
conjunction with a tennis instructor. To inquire about any of our high performance programming,
please contact Josh Chabinka at tennis@waegwoltic.ca or call the Office at 902.429.2822 ext.2.
Orange & Green Ball Development Team
The objective of this new program is to identify talented and committed 8-10 year olds ready to be
prepared for Under 10 Tournament competition. Players will be introduced and trained in the key
components (psychological, physical, tactical, and technical) of the Tennis Canada Long Term
Athlete Development Plan. They will train using the ball that best fits their level of development
with the primary goal being to rally from full court. The Development Team will led by a senior
coach.
In order to be considered for this program, players must be able to:

Engage consistently (both forehand & backhand) with coach from the service line using an
orange ball.

Perform a basic overhand service motion with directional control.

Understand proper grips for all tennis strokes (groundstrokes, serve & volley).

Maintain good practice habits.
