2007-08 Season Outlook
2007-08 Season
Stanford Wrestling
From left: All-American and Pac-10 Champion Tanner Gardner, All-American Josh
Zupancic, NCAA qualifier Luke Feist and Phil Doerner.
Stanford wrestling has been making
a steady climb over the past few years, reaching
milestone after milestone as the program aims
to establish itself as a national competitor and a
regional powerhouse. In 2007-08, the Cardinal
has everything it needs to be successful: a twotime Olympian head coach, two returning AllAmericans, four returning NCAA qualifiers, eight
returning starters and 17 eager newcomers. It
doesn’t get any better than this.
Two years ago, Kerry McCoy took the helm of
the Stanford wrestling program and immediately
began implementing a plan to take the Cardinal to
the top. In his first season, he returned the program
to its winning ways and helped it begin an ascent
up the Pac-10 ladder. Last season, the team made
even bigger leaps. Zack Giesen, one of McCoy’s first
recruits, stormed into the collegiate wrestling world
and was named the conference’s top freshman.
Five Stanford wrestlers placed in the Pac-10 and all
five earned a spot at the NCAA Championships.
Tanner Gardner matched the school’s single-season
win record and claimed Stanford’s first individual
conference title since 2004. And for the first time in
four decades, two Cardinal wrestlers earned AllAmerican honors in the same season.
This year, McCoy and the athletes that made
all of that happen are ready to pick up where they
left off.
“I am very excited about this season,” said
McCoy. “On paper we have one of the best teams
Stanford has ever had. We made huge strides last
season and our guys have been working hard to
improve on that. It’s going to be a great year.”
The promise for 2007-08 does not end with
Stanford’s strong foundation of returners. This
year, McCoy has landed a freshman class that has
combined for nine prep state titles. Moreover, he has
added a pair of promising new assistant coaches to
his staff, former Central Michigan standout Jason
Borrelli and former Oregon State standout Matt Ellis.
McCoy is confident that the new faces will be valuable
additions to the program.
“I believe we have one of the best groups of
newcomers you can ask for,” said McCoy. “They
are all committed to being the very best at
everything they do and that goes along with what
we want at Stanford. Our new assistants bring a
lot of experience and knowledge to our program.
Jason will focus on our light weights and Matt
will be working with our upper-middle weights.
The energy that they add is going to have a big
impact on our success. ”
Stanford begins the 2007-08 campaign in
senior Tanner Gardner’s home state of Kansas,
meeting Fort Hays State for a dual meet on
Nov. 9. The team will then compete in two
tournaments, the Central Missouri State Open
and the Fullerton Open, before taking on San
Francisco State in San Francisco on Nov. 21.
The team will return to the Las Vegas
Invitational, Nov. 30-Dec. 1, where two Stanford
wrestlers placed in one of the most competitive
fields in the nation last year. The Cardinal
will also return to the Reno Tournament of
Champions this season, which takes place Dec. 19.
The Cardinal heads east to start the new year,
with four duals over three days in Pennsylvania and
New Jersey. Stanford will compete against Drexel,
Lehigh, Princeton and East Stroudsburg University.
Pac-10 action begins on Jan. 18, when the
Cardinal will take on Boise State and UC Davis at
the UC Pavilion in Davis. Six days later, Stanford
will look to defeat 2007 Pac-10 Championship
runner-up Cal State Bakersfield, taking on the
Roadrunners in its first home dual of the year.
Just a day later, the Cardinal will face Menlo
College and Portland State on home turf.
Stanford continues conference action the first
two weekends of February, taking on Oregon,
defending Pac-10 Champion Oregon State, Cal
Poly and Cal State Fullerton on the road. The
regular season concludes in Tempe, Ariz., when
the Cardinal meets Arizona State.
This year’s Pac-10 Championships will be
hosted by the University of Oregon in Eugene,
Mar. 2-3. The 2008 NCAA Championships will be
held Mar. 20-22 in St. Louis, Mo.
“I have always believed in challenging our
guys during the season to prepare them for the
postseason,” said McCoy. “This year is no different.
We have a few teams on our schedule that are
ranked nationally and we compete in some of the
toughest tournaments in the nation. It’s going to be
tough, but it’s going to make us better and help us
reach our goals.”

2007-08 Season Outlook
Following is a look at the 2007-08 Cardinal by
weight class:
125
Two-time All-American Tanner Gardner
will be the anchor of the 2007-08 team,
returning for his fifth year with an arsenal of
experience. Gardner has been to the NCAA
Championships three times, and is the defending
Pac-10 Champion. He became just the second
two-time All-American in program history last
season and is determined to become Stanford’s first
three-time All-American in March. He won a school
record 42 matches in 2006-07 and became just the
fourth wrestler in program history to join the 100
career win club. Yet, going into his final collegiate
season, Gardner has just one goal in mind – an
NCAA title. Consistently ranked among the nation’s
top-five last year, the Berryton, Kans. native and his
coach know that he has the potential to become
Stanford’s second all-time NCAA Champion.
“Tanner is one of those special kids that you only
see every few years,” said McCoy. “He is truly the
total package: a great person, a great student and
a great wrestler. He has done everything possible
to put himself in a position to become the most
successful wrestler to ever put on a Stanford singlet.
It’s going to be bittersweet going through this season,
because with all of the success he’s going to have, it’s
going to be his last year.”
Three 125-pound newcomers – Austin Quarles,
Steve Scheele and Blair Matsuura – join Gardner
on the Cardinal roster this season. The trio will
have a chance to train with one of the nation’s
best and will provide much needed depth for the
Cardinal at 125 pounds.
Christine Cunningham, who hopes to follow
in the footsteps of Stanford’s Olympic bronze
medalist Patricia Miranda, may compete at 125
or 133, but will likely concentrate on wrestling
freestyle and try to make the 2008 Olympic team.
Joleen Oshiro, another female wrestler, will also
compete for Stanford at 125 pounds.
133
Sophomore Cameron Teitelman is the
returning starter at 133 pounds, and gained
valuable experience last year during his first season
on the college mats. The Calabasas, Calif. native
won 11 matches and wrestled for the Cardinal at
the Pac-10 Championships. Teitelman will not go
unchallenged for his starting role, however. Teammate
Justin Paulsen, who redshirted his first season on the
Farm, has his eye on the 133-pound spot. Paulsen,
a two-time California State Finalist and three-time
placer, wrestled unattached in 12 matches last year
and won nine of them. He took third at the California
Collegiates in February and has showed a great deal
of improvement in the off-season. Additionally,
freshman Porfirio Madrigal, a four-time Sonoma
League Champion from Healdsburg, Calif., will also
compete for the spot at 133 pounds.
141
Sophomore Matt Kim, the Cardinal
returning starter at 141 pounds, returns
bigger and stronger than ever after a promising
summer of training. Kim moved up from 133
pounds mid-season last year, won eight matches
and competed for the Cardinal at the Pac-10
Championships. The West Linn, Ore. native
will face a pair of challengers for his starting
spot, however. Fellow sophomore Eric Minnick
started for the Cardinal two years ago, and will
2 0 0 7 - 0 8
S t a n f o r d
look to win the spot back after redshirting last
season. Newcomer Max Rosefigura, a two-time
Alaska State Champion, is also in the hunt for the
starting job, with hopes of making an immediate
impact at the collegiate level.
149
Junior Tyler Parker is Stanford’s
returning starter at 149 pounds, but
the Lawrenceville, Ga. native will likely redshirt
this season, opening the spot up for a new face.
Redshirt freshman Lucas Espericueta, who placed
at the 2007 FILA Junior World Team Trials in
May, has his eye on the vacant spot, as does
newcomer Murdoch Miller, a State Champion
from Idaho. Kyle Pubols, a 149-pounder who sat
out his first two seasons with an injury, is healthy
and eager to make an impact at the collegiate
level. Sophomore Steven Frehn, who wrestled in
seven duals for the Cardinal last season, will also
be a contender for the spot.
157
Stanford has a long list of 157-pounders
on the roster, headlined by All-American
Josh Zupancic. As a junior in 2006-07, the Akron,
Ohio native won 37 matches, not an easy feat
considering 17 of his opponents were ranked.
Zupancic’s challenging regular-season paid off,
however, and prepared him for a postseason
surge. In the final weeks of the season, he claimed
second place in the Pac-10, qualified for his first
NCAA Championship and upended three seeded
opponents on his way to a seventh place national
finish and his first All-America honor. This year,
Zupancic will pick up where he left off, looking to
win his first Pac-10 title, head back to nationals
and compete for an NCAA Championship.
“Josh has done a tremendous job while at
Stanford,” said McCoy. “His All-American run last
season was considered amazing by most, but we
knew he was more than capable. Now, with that
experience and a great summer of training under
his belt, he has his sights set on winning it all.”
Stanford’s list of other potential 157-pounders
includes newcomers Trevor Stevens, Kenny
White, Max Hawes, Marcus Henderson and Nick
Amuchastegui. The talented fivesome will be part
of a solid incoming class that will provide valuable
depth for the Cardinal in the middle weights.
165
The field is wide open at 165 pounds
this year, as a number of talented
underclassmen will compete to fill the vacancy
left by 2007 NCAA qualifier Brian Perry. The
frontrunners include sophomore Peter Miller,
who is back from two seasons of injury and eager
to contribute, and freshman Kyle Anderson, a
three-time state qualifier and 2007 Texas State
Champion. Bobby Pease, a redshirt junior, and
Kyle Barrett, another freshman, will also compete
at 165 pounds this season.
174
Junior Luke Feist returns to his starting
role at 174 pounds in 2007-08, coming
off the most successful season of his career. As a
sophomore in 2006-07, Feist won 25 matches and
qualified for his first NCAA Championship. He
wrestled nine ranked opponents, and got his first
win over one when he stunned No. 11 Matt Palmer
of Columbia in January. This year, Feist will look
to improve on his fourth place conference finish,
return to the national championship and earn
his first All-American honor. Adding depth to the
W r e s t l i n g
Competing at 184 pounds, Zack Giesen was the 2007 Pac-10 coNewcomer of the Year.
Cardinal roster at 174 pounds will be a pair of
redshirt freshmen, Alex Muller and Anton Scherba.
Both spent their first year on The Farm training
and will now look to make an impact in their first
season of collegiate competition.
184
At 184 pounds, sophomore Zack Giesen
returns from an outstanding rookie
campaign, looking to make an even bigger impact
during his second season at the collegiate level.
After etching his name on the Cardinal freshman
win charts, the four-time Oregon State Champion,
took second in the conference at 184 pounds,
qualified for the NCAA Championships and was
named the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. With
confidence and a year of collegiate experience
under his belt, Giesen has his sights set even higher
this season. The Grants Pass, Ore. native aims to
battle for the Pac-10 title, return to the NCAA
Championships and join the list of Stanford’s most
accomplished wrestlers as an All-American.
197
The 197-pound slot is up for grabs
this season, and two talented young
wrestlers will compete to fill it. Sophomore Jake
Johnson, who wrestled at three weight classes
and won nine matches last year, is prepared to
compete at 197 pounds this season. Freshman
Matt Winterbourne, who won the Oregon State
Championship as a high school senior in 2007,
will battle Johnson for the spot and look to
contribute in his first collegiate season.
HWT
Senior Phillip Doerner returns for his
fifth year on The Farm, more ready
than ever to make an impact as a heavyweight.
Last season, Doerner earned the starting spot
and placed at his first collegiate tournament in
early November. He gained valuable experience
with a tough schedule that included six ranked
opponents, and ended the season on a high note.
Doerner won his last two conference dual matches
and three of his last five bouts. This year, Doerner
will look to build on that late season momentum
and contend for a conference championship.
Mark Shughart, a program newcomer who has
been a member of the Stanford track and field
squad for the past three years, will bolster the
Cardinal at the upper weights.

Kerry
McCoy
Head Coach
Kerry McCoy has taken
the Stanford wrestling
program to new
heights in his first two
years as Head Coach
erry McCoy, a two-time Olympian, four-time
World Cup Champion and three-time NCAA
All-American, begins his third year as the Head
Coach of the Stanford wrestling program in 2007-08.
McCoy made an immediate impact on the
program when he stepped onto the Farm in 2005,
leading the team to a winning record in his first
season as a head coach. Under McCoy’s guidance,
the team finished 2005-06 with an 8-7 record in
dual meets and improved two places at the Pac-10
Championships. In addition, he helped two wrestlers
qualify for the NCAA championships and coached
sophomore Tanner Gardner to become the 13th AllAmerican in Stanford history.
Last season, during McCoy’s second year at the
helm of the program, the improvement continued. The
Cardinal finished with an 8-8 dual meet record, and
climbed another rung higher, to sixth place, on the Pac10 ladder. With the help of McCoy, five wrestlers placed
in the Pac-10 and Gardner captured the program’s first
individual Pac-10 title since 2004. All five qualified for
the NCAA Championships, one of the highest totals
of NCAA qualifiers in Cardinal history. Gardner and
Josh Zupancic earned All-America honors, the first
Stanford pair to do so in the same season since 1967,
while freshman Zack Giesen was named the Pac-10
Newcomer of the Year.
Before arriving at Stanford, McCoy spent five seasons
with the Lehigh wrestling program in Bethlehem, Pa., where
he coached 14 NCAA All-Americans, including two NCAA
Champions, and helped the Mountain Hawks to four EIWA
Conference titles. McCoy also helped guide 197-pounder Jon
Trenge to a Lehigh-record 133 victories in his career and a
trio of top-three finishes at the NCAA Championships.
During his time at Lehigh, McCoy also served as the
Director of Wrestling and Head Coach of the Lehigh Valley
Athletic Club, where he was responsible for conducting
clinics in the local area, promoting the sport of wrestling
and fund-raising. In addition, McCoy has served on Athlete
Advisory committees for USA Wrestling and the U.S. Olympic
Committee. In February, he was named to the U.S. Freestyle
World Team coaching staff for the second-straight year.
Prior to his arrival at Lehigh, McCoy served as an assistant
at Penn State for three seasons, during which the Nittany Lions
posted two fourth-place finishes at the NCAA Tournament and
produced 10 All-Americans and two NCAA Champions.
McCoy has had tremendous success as an athlete,
beginning with his high school career at Longwood in
Middle Island, N.Y. McCoy was named the 2005 Friends of
Long Island Wrestling Man of the Year and was inducted
into the Longwood High School Hall of Fame in 1998.
McCoy went on to compete at Penn State, where he
accumulated an impressive 150-18 overall record and won
NCAA heavyweight championships in 1994 and 1997.
McCoy also won three Big Ten titles and won 131 of his last
132 matches at Penn State, including an 88-match winning
streak. A three-time All-American, McCoy was named
the Penn State Athlete of the Year and the Nittany Lions’
Wrestler of the Year in 1994 and 1997. During his senior
year, he was selected as the 1997 Hodge Award winner as
W.I.N. Magazine’s Wrestler of the Year. McCoy earned his
Bachelor’s Degree in marketing from Penn State in 1997.
A two-time Olympian, McCoy took fifth place at the 2000
Olympiad and seventh at the 2004 Games in Athens. In 2000,
McCoy qualified for the Olympics at 286 pounds by defeating
1999 World Champion Stephen Neal, by scores of 4-1 and 6-4.
In 2004, McCoy won his fifth straight U.S. National Freestyle
Wrestling Championship, taking five straight matches and
defeating 2003 NCAA Champion Steve Mocco in the final,
3-0. His victory put him in the finals of the Olympic Trials,
where he bested Tolly Thompson 5-3 and 8-0 to earn the
right to represent the United States again at the 2004 Summer
Games.
McCoy has been a consistent force on the national scene
for the past decade, as he has collected numerous top
finishes at the United States National Tournament with a
fourth-place finish in 1994; third in 1995; second in 1996
and 1997; fifth in 1998; third in 1999; and first from 200004. He is a nine-time member of the National Team. In 1998
and 2001, he placed fourth at the World Championships, and
won a silver medal in 2003. Then, in August of 2003, McCoy
won a gold medal at the Pan-Am Games and was honored as
the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
McCoy and his wife, Abbie, were married in June in State
College, Pa. The couple resides in Palo Alto.

Assistant Coach
ason Borrelli, a former Central Michigan standout, begins
his first season as an Assistant Coach at Stanford in the fall
of 2007.
Borrelli comes to the Farm from CMU, where he served
as an Assistant Coach last season and ran a youth wrestling
club. In his first year on the staff, he helped the Chippewas
to their ninth consecutive Mid-American Conference
Championship. The squad finished the season ranked fifth
in the final dual meet rankings and finished 15th at the
NCAA Championships in Detroit, Mich. Borrelli also helped
guide three CMU wrestlers to All-American honors during
the 2006-07 season.
A Mt. Pleasant, Mich. native, Borrelli was a two-time
Michigan State Champion in high school before beginning
his career at Central Michigan in 2001. A four-year starter

Stanford at the Conference Championships
1916 Stanford Wrestling. L to R – Gonzalez (115), Gagos
(135), Campbell (145), Wise (Coach), Eiskamp (158), Daniels
(HWT). 1916 Stanford Wrestling. On April 8, Stanford’s first
wrestling team traveled to Cal’s Harmon Gym and won two of
the five matches contested. Back then matches were six minutes
long, consisting of two three-minute periods with a two-minute
break. If no fall occurred, a three-minute overtime was wrestled
after another two-minute break. If there were still no fall, the
match was decided by a “referee’s decision.” Wrestling did not
develop our current point system until 1945.
1948 Stanford Wrestling. Co-captain Vern Jones, head coach
Chuck Taylor and co-captain Winston Mumby. Coach Taylor
served as the wrestling coach until he became Stanford’s head
football coach and later the director of athletics. Jones remained
undefeated for four years and became Stanford’s first three-time
conference champion (1946, 1948 & 1949). He was the first
wrestler ever inducted into the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame.
Mumby was the conference runner-up and followed in his
father’s footsteps by becoming Stanford’s head wrestling coach
in 1949.
1957 Stanford Wrestling. Kneeling: Alan Laubscher, Karl
Hufbauer, Roger Edelson, Ed Howell. Standing: Head coach Wes
Ruff, Steve Handley, Peter Likins, Jerry Wright, assistant coach
Don Damuth. The team was led by captain Peter Likins. Likins
remained undefeated in duals for four years at 137 and 147
pounds and was runner-up in the Far Western freestyle as well
as the conference championship. Likins was the first Stanford
wrestler ever to be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of
Fame as an outstanding American.

Wrestling Facilities
Stanford
Facilities
The Cardinal wrestling team competes in Burnham Pavilion.
Wrestling
Stanford University is
home to some of the
finest athletic facilities
in the nation.
Wrestling on The Farm has more than a 90-year history
dating back to 1916 when Stanford ventured across the Bay
to take on the University of California. Early intercollegiate
competition in most Stanford sports consisted primarily
of contests between Stanford and Cal. Later, especially after
World War II, competition expanded with the addition of
many new collegiate wrestling programs.
Although Stanford maintained a wrestling program
for many years, the team did not attend the NCAA
Championships until 1967. That year, guided by first-year
coach Jerry Budzik, a former Oklahoma State wrestler and
football player, Stanford traveled to Kent State and competed
in its first-ever NCAA Championships. Impressively,
Stanford returned home with two All-Americans and a
13th-place finish in the team standings.
Since then, Stanford has qualified wrestlers to the NCAAs
almost every year and has produced 13 more All-Americans
and 16 more conference champions. In addition, Stanford
has finished in the top ten of the national academic
standings among all college wrestling programs every year
since the award began more than a decade ago. Stanford’s
team GPA has never dropped below 3.2.
Stanford’s ongoing goal is to produce Pac-10 Champions,
All-Americans and NCAA Champions, while maintaining
a program with the highest academic standards. Stanford’s
student-athletes have a long history of making significant
contributions to society after graduating.
The Stanford varsity weight room contains 5,000 square feet of weight room
space and an additional 5,000 square feet of a running turf and training area,
and includes both free weights and weight machines.

General Philosophy
We believe that Stanford wrestlers should
dare to “have it all.” This is one of the main
reasons they choose Stanford: it offers the
best of everything. We are committed to the
idea that a student can achieve the highest
goals in the classroom, while also becoming
a Conference Champion, All-American, and
National Champion. If that isn’t enough, we
believe that our wrestlers should also soak
up all of the other “good stuff” that comes
with the complete college experience. To do
all of this, a Stanford student-athlete must be
very disciplined, hardworking and motivated.
These are values we look for in potential team
members and strive to instill in our wrestlers.
Wrestling Achievement
We believe that good students make good
athletes. Having high standards is a help, not a
hindrance. While most people think of Stanford
as a top school academically, Stanford has
accomplished some amazing things athletically
too. We have become a top-10 program in just
about every one of the 35 varsity sports that we
sponsor, and wrestling is working toward that
end as well. In fact, Stanford has over 30 NCAA
team titles in the last 10 years alone, which
is more than double any other school in the
United States. We annually win the Directors’
Cup for being the most successful and wellrounded athletic program in the country, and
we do this with our high academic standards.
The Balancing Act
Getting admitted to Stanford is the most
difficult part about Stanford’s academics. It
is difficult because there are just not enough
spaces for all of the qualified applicants. If a
high school wrestler were a strong enough
student to be admitted to Stanford, we have
no doubt they will be able to balance their
athletic, academic and social life here. How else
could we win the Director’s Cup every year?
In addition, over the past 20 seasons, our team
has maintained a team GPA of at least 3.2.
This has made us consistently one of the top
academic wrestling teams in the nation. Our
students continue to prove themselves both on
the mat and in the classroom after they arrive.
Academic Resources for Athletes
Stanford can be challenging for everyone,
but for every challenge that a Stanford
student faces, invaluable resources are
available. All Stanford students have access to
free tutoring. Athletes have the added bonus
of having the Athletic Academic Resource
Center available to them. This center provides
an additional academic advisor if a student’s
undergraduate advisor is unavailable. The
AARC also operates a study table four nights
each week. Mentoring programs are also
available to all Stanford undergraduates.

Potential for Success
The most important things we stress when
looking for Stanford wrestlers are one’s
toughness and one’s desire. Many wrestlers
do not understand that there is a significant
difference between high school wrestling and
college wrestling. Therefore, it is difficult to
assess whether a high school star can become
a collegiate star right away.
On the other hand, one does not
necessarily have to win a state title to become
competitive in college. It goes both ways. We
have had just as many non-state champions
as state champions who went on to become
successful. We believe we provide a great
environment for this high school-to-college
transition.

to train outdoors year round. There are
always events taking place on and off campus,
which makes it a great place to be.

Cardinal Wrestling Club (formerly

it provides world-class training opportunities

World Class Area
Stanford offers all that a serious
athlete could want. First, it is in one

Friends of Stanford Wrestling
Wrestling has been part of Stanford’s curriculum since 1916,
but only recently has it received the extra funding necessary
to compete on a national level. Budgetary constraints gave
the program a low profile until 1979, when the efforts of the
“Friends of Stanford Wrestling” gave it new vitality. Since
then, Stanford’s primary goals have been to be financially
self-sufficient, work with the best student-athletes and
maintain a nationally competitive wrestling program. The
following are common questions regarding how the Stanford
wrestling program’s fund-raising is structured:
Can I make a contribution directly to the wrestling
program at Stanford?
Yes. Persons interested in making a gift can make checks
payable to Stanford Wrestling and send them to:
Wrestling Office, 641 E. Campus Dr., Stanford, CA 94305.
Any amount is welcome and is classified as a general
taxdeductible gift to the University.
How are contributions to the Friends of Stanford
Wrestling used?
These contributions help pay for our operating budget,
which currently includes team travel, equipment,
recruiting, administration, etc.
What are the financial goals of the Stanford wrestling
program?
Now that The Buck Cardinal Club is helping to support
our program, our primary goal is to endow the program.
The Vern Jones Stanford Wrestling Program Endowment
and the Stanford Wrestling Endowment are two funds
that are currently set up to support our goal. To fully
endow the program, (operating budget, coach salaries,
and scholarships) our endowment would need to reach
the $10 million mark.
How do I become a Friend of Stanford Wrestling?
There are two main ways to become a Friend of Stanford
Wrestling. The first is to send us your mailing address so
that you are part of our mailing list. This will allow us
to send you our newsletters, our press guide, and other
special information throughout the year. The second
is to join our email list. This is a much more “up to the
minute” way of following the team and the wrestling
program throughout the year. Feel free to email kmccoy@
stanford.edu to join the mailing list and/or the email list.
Listed below are some of the different ways you can support
Stanford wrestling:
Giving Securities to Stanford Wrestling
Advantages
If you have decided to make a gift to Stanford wrestling,
it could be advantageous to give appreciated securities
instead of cash.
You do not pay income tax on the appreciation of the
securities. If you have owned the securities long enough
to qualify for long-term capital gain treatment, you
are entitled to claim a charitable deduction for federal
income tax purposes equal to the fair market value of
the securities on the date of the gift, generally subject to
a limit of 30 percent of your adjusted gross income. You
may carry forward any unused deduction in excess of
the limitation for a maximum of five additional years.
State laws concerning deductibility of charitable gifts
may vary, and you should consult your own tax advisors
to determine the effect of state law in your case. Some
Donors give appreciated securities and then purchase
similar securities with the cash they would otherwise have
used to make the gift. In this manner, donors are able to
make a significant gift, receive a charitable deduction for
the full value of the securities transferred and obtain a
new, higher basis for the purchased securities.
Please Note: If the securities are restricted in any manner,
Stanford will need to know the type of restriction and
any additional information pertaining to the restriction.
We request that you discuss restrictions with the Office
of Planned Giving before trying to transfer the securities
to ensure that Stanford can follow your wishes. Donors
who contribute securities in excess of $500 should
complete a copy of IRS Form 8283 to be filed with their
federal income tax returns. This form can be obtained
from the Office of Planned Giving. If the securities are
not traded on a public exchange or if the securities are
restricted, an appraisal may be required to substantiate
the federal and state income tax charitable deductions.
In general, it is not advisable to give securities that are
worth less than their original cost. If a sale would result in
a deductible loss, it would usually be more advantageous
to sell the securities, deduct the loss, and make a gift to
Stanford out of the proceeds.
Planned Giving
Bequests – gifts made through wills – are a great option
for helping fund our wrestling program at Stanford.
As the old saying goes, “You can’t take it with you.”
However, you CAN significantly reduce the tax on
your estate through charitable giving. After you have
taken care of your family in your estate plans, consider
making a “planned gift” to Stanford wrestling, so that
your loved ones won’t have to wrestle with the IRS. If
you are interested in this, please call the number listed
below. Life income gifts – such as charitable remainder
trusts – are particularly attractive to donors who have
highly appreciated stock or real estate. If you transfer
appreciated assets to a charitable trust, you can avoid
capital gains tax on the sale of your assets and receive
income from the trust for life. It’s like a takedown
that goes straight to the fall. At the end of the day, the
Stanford wrestling program will win when the remainder
of your trust passes to the University. Please call the
number listed below for more details.
Note: All donors who intend to make gifts to the
University through their estate plans are honored with
membership in Stanford’s Founding Grant Society.

Scholarship Support
Buck/Cardinal Club
I
n June of 1934, the “Tiny Buck of the Month Club”
was formed to raise the necessary funds from
Stanford alumni and friends to pay the tuition costs
for capable, worthy and needy student-athletes. As
the Club’s name implied, membership dues were one
dollar per month and the word “tiny” was added to
emphasize the modest amount and to honor head
football coach, Claude “Tiny” Thornhill. The Club
later shortened its name to the “Stanford Buck Club”
and revised its initial membership dues requirement.
Until the mid-1970’s, there were no athletic
scholarships for women, nor was there any fundraising
organization devoted to this purpose. To accomplish
the task of raising scholarship funds for women, the
Cardinal Club was formed in 1977-78.
Under the guidance of the Buck and Cardinal Club
leadership, a merged Buck/Cardinal Club was formed in
1987 to raise funds for both men’s and women’s athletic
scholarships. The new volunteer organization was built
on the fine Buck and Cardinal Club traditions that
served both organizations well.
In 2007, the Stanford Athletic Department
provided full operating budgets to all 35 varsity sports.
These budgets include all of the components necessary
for our programs to compete at the Division I level.
Because of this, none of our varsity sports will be
required to fundraise for their basic operating budgets
effective fiscal year 2008 (September 1, 2007).
These new budgets will be funded in large part by
a more robust Buck/Cardinal Club, enabling our head
coaches and their staffs to focus their time and energy
on coaching and recruiting instead of fundraising
for basic operating budgets. Our donors will receive
Buck/Cardinal Club benefits commensurate with their
generosity.
Under the new Stanford Athletics annual giving
program, the Buck/Cardinal Club will not only
include its great scholarship tradition, but also assist
the department’s coaches and staff in providing the
resources needed to compete at the highest level of
NCAA Division I athletics.
Instead of receiving solicitations from individual
sports, donors and friends of Stanford Athletics
will now receive a single solicitation from the Buck/
Cardinal Club. By giving a gift to the Buck/Cardinal
Club, the donor is giving both their favorite sport, and
all of Stanford’s varsity sports, the budget resources
they need. Donors will also have the opportunity to
let us know which sports are their favorites at the time
of the donation, and sports will keep in touch with
donors who specify interest in that specific program.
For more information on the Buck/Cardinal Club
and giving to Stanford Athletics, please call (650) 7249081 or visit gostanford.com/giving.
