It’s been a great first year of the biennium! Before we dive headfirst into another great year of Phi Chi Theta, let’s look back at all we’ve accomplished in the past year. First and foremost, we are thrilled to have added a new chapter to the Central Region family this year. Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa came on board and wasted no time getting up to speed and establishing a presence on their campus. Welcome to Phi Chi Theta! In March, I had the pleasure of hosting representatives from all of our collegiate chapters in Kalamazoo, Michigan for the 2015 Central Regional Conference. It was amazing to see delegates from our chapters set aside their time to travel to the conference, share ideas, and contribute to the national PiCTure It! campaign. A huge thank you to all who attended! The rest of this year has been focused on visiting several of the chapters in the Central Region. These visits are essential because they allow me time to work with chapter Executive Board members on any issues they may be facing and establish a plan for chapter improvement and expansion. I love getting to meet all of the members of the chapters and answer questions about Phi Chi Theta and my own experiences. For those of you who haven’t seen me yet, I’ll be traveling around to the rest of my chapters over the next year. I’m looking forward to meeting you all! Please take the time to read through the articles in this newsletter. You’ll find a lot of great information about what’s going on in the Central Region and what to expect for the next year. Shout out to my Assistant Director, Aliyea Rizai, for putting this newsletter together and for all of her help in the Central Region and nationally! For anybody looking to get involved in PCT on a national level, feel free to reach out! Save time and money by using the preapproved vendors list cleared by Nationals! This new program will provide Chapters with the opportunity to receive free merchandise when they submit receipts to the affinity company! Join the New 'Phi Chi Theta' Merchandise Swap' Group on Facebook! The Zeta Gamma chapter at University of Illinois is inviting other PCT Chapters to join the 'Phi Chi Theta Merchandise Swap' Group on Facebook. This page will allow members to share designs and aggregate merchandise orders in one place! Members can start by creating a design and setting up an order through the list of pre-approved PCT merchandise vendors. After the order is set-up with a company, a link to the order and a price estimate can be posted on the Facebook page. Then, members from all PCT chapters can place an order on the items that they want! Combining orders will help lower the cost of merchandise orders, help meet minimum orders, and give everyone an opportunity to collaborate and share their ideas! Presidents of each Chapter are encouraged to add members to the group! Additional questions can be sent to Gina Cirrincione at gmcirrincione@gmail.com. 2015 Central Regional Conference By Mike Grover The largest event in the Central Region took place this past March. The Central Regional Conference was a huge success thanks to the efforts of the attendees. It was a weekend of networking, building friendships, growing professionally, and having fun! The conference was attended by delegates of all collegiate chapters in the Central Region. Our newest chapter at Drake University sent four members, a great accomplishment as a new chapter. The highest number of attendees came from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who sent seven members and brought their faculty advisor as well! The day began with breakfast and an update on the most recent goings on of the Central Region from Regional Director, Mike Grover. These updates were followed by the State of Fraternity address from National President, Gary Hodge, who was kind enough to fly into Kalamazoo for the event. The rest of the morning was spent with Melissa King, National Vice President Internal, who led the attendees through the national programming for this year, PiCTure It! Attendees were placed in groups and filmed recruitment videos for the fraternity to use at a national level. 2015 Central Regional Conference After lunch, our collegiate members were treated to two wonderful guest speakers. Megan Dino, faculty advisor of the Zeta Gamma chapter and advisor with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Business Career Services, spoke to attendees about searching for a career and strategies for carving your own path in the working world. Following Megan was guest speaker Ben Brownback, Executive Producer of B2Group, a media company based out of Las Vegas. Ben spoke about the benefits of networking and strategies for using social media to lead your networking efforts. Following our guest speakers, attendees sat in roundtables on various topics and had the opportunity to share successes and failures at their individual chapters and help each other with challenges they were facing. As roundtables wrapped up, Gary Hodge spoke on behalf of the Foundation about their organization and presented this year’s Central Region scholarship to collegiate member Sheri Lambesis from the Zeta Gamma chapter. Finally, we heard from members of three chapters regarding impressive events and internal groups that their chapters had organized. They gave background information on everything from planning to executing complex events. The conference was a huge success, providing key takeaways for all attendees. Thank you to all who came out and gave their efforts to make the event so great! Phi Chi Theta supports an environment where member and chapter participation is recognized and superior performance is rewarded. Congratulations to our 2014-2015 award recipients. Recognition was given at the Western Regional Meeting (July 31-Aug 1, 2015) in Denver, CO and the Eastern Regional Meeting (Aug 7-8, 2015) in Virginia Beach, VA. The Zeta Xi chapter has made a lot of headway since beginning one year ago on Drake University’s campus. Heather and Mikayla, both only sophomores at the time, were eager to bring together talented and determined future business leaders to form a new Phi Chi Theta chapter. After communicating their vision to members of the business college and their classmates, they began the process with twenty founding members. I recently had the opportunity to meet with Collin Miller, the chapter’s treasurer, at Smokey Row Coffee house in Des Moines, Iowa, to discuss the chapter and his experiences with Phi Chi Theta. He is currently working to establish sponsors for the group and, in doing so, has already gained a wealth of real world business experience from developing and establishing budgets, managing funds, and communicating with By Aliyea Rizai professionals. Zeta Xi has already begun actively participating in campus events to raise money for their chapter. In April, the chapter organized a very successful bake sale during Drake’s Relays Week, an annual collegiate track invitational boasting over 40,000 fans. These efforts contributed to events such as bowling and picnics. Additionally, the Zeta Xi chapter has sought and found opportunities to give back to their community. In the Spring, they packaged meals for the Meals for The Heartland program. Through their efforts, they packaged food for over 10,350 people around the world. Within their first semester as an established chapter, they have already put a lot of effort into upholding the ideals of Phi Chi Theta. Despite being a new chapter, Zeta Xi has already taken the initiative to seek mentorship nationally. In the Spring, five members attended the Central Regional Conference in Kalamazoo, Michigan: Collin Miller, Rebecca Phelps, Theresa Kettler, Zack Nemmers, and Trevor Matiusk. They took the opportunity to network with members from other chapters and learn how to conduct their rush process and events. This coming semester, Zeta Xi plans on continuing to grow their membership and leveraging the support and knowledge of other chapters. It was really a pleasure to speak with Collin and I have very impressed with all they had accomplished in such a short time. I can’t wait to see what they do next!
