I would like to acknowledge our dedicated Board of Trustees – a diverse group of 16 people who have devoted countless hours and extensive expertise to securing the future of our special school. In addition, this year we made important progress in the structure and work of Board committees – many thanks to all of the Board committee members who have shared their wisdom on a wide variety of significant topics relevant to our school. In 2011/2012, we solidified many of the important school governance changes that were set in motion in 2011, and we completed an important milestone in our school’s accreditation cycle by hosting our Association for Colorado Independent Schools Visiting Team. The Visiting Team engaged with us on every aspect of our school’s operations – from financial management and admissions, learning inclusiveness and curriculum issues, and best practice board governance and fiduciary oversight responsibilities. We received much in the way of constructive feedback, as well as important commendations, including one I am particularly proud of: “Throughout a period of major growth and change, the school has maintained a positive climate and honored its mission while looking toward the future.” Of course, at the heart of it all, the 2011/2012 school year was about children, teachers and classrooms. At the Board meetings this year, we have memorialized a practice we call the “Three Minute Mission Moment” – we begin and end each meeting with a reflection on the way Stanley’s mission came alive over the course of the month between our meetings. This practice has allowed us to connect with our educational philosophy and values as a school, and to share examples of our mission in action. Typically, these stories celebrate the artful and joyful teaching that is our hallmark, curious breakthroughs among children, or samples of student work that inspire us all – it is important to me that the Board of Trustees continually and intentionally recommit to what I refer to as “the WHO, the WHAT, and the WHY” of what we are all about as a school. During the 2011/2012 school year, we were able to complete a revision of our 2009 Strategic Plan. The final document will be available in early 2013, and will be the focus of our third annual “State of our School” evening, April 10 (save the date). The Strategic Plan has laid out three primary areas of focus: Financial Sustainability; Programmatic Sustainability; and Mission Enhancement. These areas align with our ACIS Visiting Team recommendations, and reflect work underway to secure our commitments to some of our core priorities, such as socioeconomic diversity, learning inclusiveness, and our Teacher Preparation Program. The Board of Trustees engaged with the Teacher Preparation Program in new ways in 2011/2012 by recognizing the important role it plays in our mission and in the broader education community. Many board members made visits to our partner schools and 2 experienced the British Primary philosophy in various school settings and with very different student populations. A highlight of all of these visits were the debriefs with the school principals who were passionate about why a teacher trained in the Stanley British Primary Teacher Preparation Program is a true “difference maker” in terms of student achievement and school culture. We know that maintaining a commitment to training teachers in Denver’s urban schools is an important aspect of our public purpose as an independent private school and is an area of great opportunity for us in the coming year. The Director of the Teacher Preparation Program continues to be an integral part of the administrative leadership team and the Board of Trustees, ensuring we are continually reflecting on our educational philosophy and mission. Through the generosity of our community, the Curious Minds Annual Fund exceeded our goal and raised $345,956, in 2011/2012 with 91% A new perspective parent participation, and 100% participation from the Board of Trustees. Likewise, the Stanley Auction, the biggest source of support for scholarships and financial aid, set a new record by raising $108,000. And, as a result of our efforts to grow our endowment, we are realizing the transformational power of philanthropy with a long-term focus. Community participation in these endeavors is a true testament to the many important ways families support our school. We are particularly proud of the broad and diverse parent participation that is the bedrock of our school. This spirit of volunteerism provides much needed operational and administrative support, enables our students to have experiences in and outside of the classroom that are truly unique, and contributes to the strong sense of community that we all treasure. Whether it is supporting a family when there is a death or hardship, celebrating a new marriage or the birth of a new baby, or stopping by to bake cookies or play a game of kickball at choice time, the way our community pulls together, in tough times or fun times, is one of our most valuable assets as a school. We are all in this messy, joyful, heart-wrenching project that is Stanley British Primary School together. I am grateful and honored to be part of such an inspiring and special cause. Kind regards, Buffy Naake President, Board of Trustees 3 letter from the head of school Dear Families and Friends, As is usually the case at Stanley BPS, 2011/2012 saw our school through much growth and change. Through all the opportunity and challenge the year brought, we continued to establish our identity as a Kindergarten through Eighth Grade school, strengthening programs and curriculum and across the nine grades. Tying various school-wide initiatives together over the course of the year was the theme of sustainability - what we can do today that ensures Stanley will continue to thrive, not only for our children but also for those yet to come. Governance and Finance Working under new Bylaws and organization, our Board of Trustees undertook several critical projects during 11/12. A Board-designated Marketing Committee began work on creating a formal marketing plan for Stanley. As economic pressures continue and competition from public schools increases, our ability to convey the unique value of a Stanley education has become a core priority. Another Board-initiated committee, Strategic Planning, worked throughout the year to review the results of our last planning cycle, identify priorities for the next five years, and capture this thinking into a document to share with the community. In addition to marketing priorities, one central element of the new strategic plan will be how we can intentionally promote and support a foundational part of our school’s mission - our commitment to serving the public good through our Teacher Preparation Program. A third area of focus at the Board level was identifying opportunities to improve the capacity of our financial operations. The school’s financial sustainability is a classic example of an area in which the Board and Head of School share responsibility. Working together, we identified opportunities to strengthen our financial administrative capacity and began work on restructuring our school’s financial reporting. This work was propelled and supported by the recommendations of our new auditing firm. In May, we hired Laurie Saltzman to be our new Director of Finance and Operations. In the fall, we formally recognized Lloyd Slevc, Business Manager at Stanley for many years, for his service and commitment to Stanley BPS. Successful Reaccreditation In October, we welcomed our ACIS Visiting Team to Stanley’s campus. A collection of teachers and administrators from other ACIS schools, the team’s job was to validate the work of our Self-Study and to ensure our practice is in alignment with our school’s mission. We received the official Visiting Team Report in January, and amongst its eleven “Major Commendations,” the team noted, “Stanley’s mission permeates every aspect of the program and the school, from its youngest students to its parents, staff, and faculty. It was evident to the Visiting Team that Stanley is committed to a diverse and inclusive community.” Also, “Stanley is a joyous place for students to learn and grow and for teachers to develop their craft.” The recommendations contained in the report provide us with specific focal points in our ongoing work towards school improvement and program enhancement. We will respond to each recommendation in our First-Year Response, due to ACIS in March 2013. Also in January, we received notification from the association that our school was officially re-accredited as a result of a successful evaluation process. 4 FINANCES AND FACILITIES Giving to Stanley Again, with the great support from the community, we reached a new standard of over $345,000 in our Curious Minds Annual Fund. These funds go directly to supporting current operations, teachers, and students. Our annual auction and our Parent Committee fundraisers also continued to provide terrific support for our school. The auction netted over $100,000, and Stanley Services earned over $20,000 to support specific school programs and initiatives. Enjoying the warm mornings of late May, we “continued” our second and fifth graders and graduated fortythree eighth graders to conclude the 2011/2012 school year. Our graduates were bound for the following high schools: t4JYUP$PMPSBEP"DBEFNZ t0OFUP$IFSSZ$SFFL)JHI4DIPPM t0OFUP(FPSHF8BTIJOHUPO*#1SPHSBN t5XPUPUIF%FOWFS4DIPPMPGUIF"SUT tDzSFFUP3FHJT+FTVJU)JHI4DIPPM tDzSFFUP4BJOU.BSZT"DBEFNZ t5XPUP.BDIFCFVG)JHI4DIPPM t0OFUP-JUUMFUPO)JHI4DIPPM t0OFUPDzPNBT+FìFSTPO)JHI4DIPPM t0OFUP7BMPS$ISJTUJBO)JHI4DIPPM t0OFUPDzBDIFS"DBEFNZ$" t0OFUPUIF#FSLTIJSF4DIPPM."
