Seems like yesterday we were talking about Y2K. This decade is sure flying by! Anyway, I hope everyone is enjoying the snow this winter. Kind of makes one wonder about this global warming thing! Record snowfall all over the west which for skiers is great and for those of us who like to shower and wash our cars, the water is great and sorely needed. Speaking of cars, we had a great year last year as a car club! More people than ever showed up at many of the events and I believe a good time was had by all. We would like to make 2008 an even better year and to do that, we need and would greatly appreciate your involvement. There are wonderful benefits to being a member of our humble little club such as driving events, picnics as well as other social gatherings, tech sessions, the Car Control Clinic and the fantastic camaraderie at all of these events and gatherings. Also, for those of us who are Sprint subscribers, we can get a 15% discount on our bills! See www.bmwcca.org website for details or go to http://www.sprint.bz/ bmwcca. The events for this year are (Continued on page 4) WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO REPLACE BMW BROKEN FOG LIGHTS (E46)? NEWS • • Next Meet: March 12 General Meeting and Elections - Rocky Mountain Pizza 7:00 PM Stay tuned to our website for up to date information and announcements, as well as our next reminder postcard. YOUR BY TROY BELNAP Difficulty Level: 2 Difficulty scale: Adding air to your tires is level one Rebuilding a BMW Motor is level ten It seams like every year one or both of my fog lights are broken. It is either a rock from that big truck on the freeway or the bulb finally goes out. Here is a quick guide on replacing them. Things you will need: You can get either a new lens assembly or just a new bulb, depending on what you need to replace. Tools needed: You need either a flat screw driver or a plastic pry tool (my preferred). If using the screw driver you will want to cover it with a soft rag or towel to keep from damaging the finish. You will also need an 8mm socket. • Flat screw driver or plastic pry tool, • 8mm socket and driver. Optional: but I also prefer to work on my car after I clean it While looking at the fog lights on your car, locate the tab continued on page 7 Page 2 www.wasatchbmwcca.org Volume MMVIII, Issue #1 BMW TAKES THE RAPP In 1913 a young engineer Karl Rapp started a new company with a college Julius Auspitzer. The new company was called Karl Rapp Motorenwerke GmbH. The focus was to build and sell "engines of all types, in particular internal combustion engines for aircraft and motor vehicles". Rapp had a good design in his engines but an unforeseen vibration forced the military to stop buying engines from Rapp. This almost devastated the engine manufacture. Luckily for a “Popp of luck” the company made a turn around. Franz Popp a military appointee looking for a manufacture to build the 12-cylinder AustroDaimler engine convinced his superiors that the Rapp Motorenwerke could build the engine. Soon Popp was actively involved in the company to keep production on tract. Popp understood that Rapp Motorenwerke very much needed a chief engineer with new ideas on making aero engines. Popp ensured that Max Friz, a very talented young engineer at Daimler who had recently applied for a position, was hired by Rapp (Friz and Rapp were colleagues together at Austro-Daimler) . Max Friz, “At the Daimler engine company” had tried to develop an over-sized, high-compression engine. Once at Rapp Motorenwerke Friz was able to put his highaltitude engine into practice. In a few weeks he designed a new aero-engine, which, with an innovative carburetor and a variety of other technical details, he development was superior to any other German aeroengine. This engine would renown under the designation “BMW IIIa”. The Reichswehr was so impressed by the new engine that it placed an order for 600 units, even before a single prototype had been produced. The aero engine developed by Friz had turned Rapp Motorenwerke into an essential contributor to the war effort virtually overnight. After the success of the BMW IIIa aero motor, in 1917, it was decided that Karl Rapp's contract be terminated by the managing board of Rapp Motorenwerke. Franz Josef Popp was appointed as managing director of the company, while at the same time, the name of the company was changed from Rapp Motorenwerke into Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH. This was intended to signal a new beginning to the outside world. After World War I, the Treaty of Versailles (1919) prohibited the production of aircraft in Germany. Otto closed his factory and BMW switched to manufacturing railway brakes. In 1919 BMW designed its first motorcycle engine, used in a model called the Victoria References: http://www.autogermanabmw.com/bmwhistory.php http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_BMW http://www.historicalarchive.bmw.com/2/index.php Page 3 www.wasatchbmwcca.org News From National MEMBERSHIP STATS as of 1/18/2008 Volume MMVIII, Issue #1 CHAPTER INFO BOARD MEMBERS President – Rich Getty gettybmw@yahoo.com - 801-330-2779 Vice President – Don Stevens Current Membership Monthly Net Gain (Loss) Monthly % Change Last Year's Membership Annual Net Gain (Loss) Annual % Change 2006's Membership Net Gain (Loss) for 2 years % Change for 2 years % 75,823 -361 -0.47% 75,844 -21 -0.03% 75,116 707 0.94% New Members Renewals Roundels Mailed 948 48.40% 65,284 dcswbmw@emailias.com - 801-942-3194 Secretary - Kevin Heiner cellguru@aol.com - 801-372-1004 Treasurer – Craig Hawe utah_craig@hotmail.com - 801-277-6197 Newsletter Editor - Troy Belnap mpower@digis.net - 801-349-5104 Webmaster – Johnny Lange johnny@wildyoats.com- 801-571-0191 Membership Chair – Dan Ernst db_ernst@msn.com - 801-550-6791 Driving Events Chair – Jeff Blonder jblonder@earthlink.net - 801-205-5605 Driving Events Co-Chair – Bob Read bread@xmission.com 435-513-1434 Newsletter Submissions We always welcome your stories, suggestions, technical tips, photos, questions, or comments, etc., which would be of interest to your fellow club members. Insert your prying device in the slotted area and gently pry the bezel loose. There are only a couple of tabs holing it in place. Start slow to help from damaging your cars finish. Once the bezel has been removed locate the 8mm bolt that holds the light assembly in the vehicle. Remove the bolt making sure that you do not misplace it. The assembly is now loose and by pulling it out toward you it is removed from the car. Re- move the power leads by pressing on the side of the connector while pulling the connector form the light unit. If you purchased a complete unit you can just plug the new one in and then reverse the steps used to remove the assembly then snap on the bezel and away you go. If you need to replace just the light bulb twist the bulb counter clockwise and replace it. Be careful not to touch the bulb with your finger as the oils may cause the bulb to fail prematurely. With a new bulb in the assembly reverse your steps and then replace the bezel and you have now replaced your lights. Note: be careful not to drop the bolt while reinstalling as it is difficult to recover References: http://www.my330i.com/ The BMW X6 launches in May, 2008 with the X6 xDrive30d, xDrive35i and xDrive35d.
