Introduction
Colombia is the third largest producer of intimate apparel, and manufactures
the world’s leading brand names in sportswear and jeans. Its production plants
and wash processes include the highest quality equipment, and its garments
are known across the globe.
But not only do they produce for the world’s leading brands. Colombia also has
its own broad community of successful labels and designers, bearing comparison with the international competition.
With this brochure we would like to introduce you to 15 selected brands and
manufacturers in Colombia offering underwear, lingerie, shapewear, swim
wear, kids wear, sportswear and jeans wear. As well as their unique look and
creativity, Colombia offers more advantages for European buyers, such as:
·· Good geographic location with access to commercial harbors onto the Atlantic and Pacific oceans
·· less than 3 weeks’ transportation to Europe by sea
·· High CSR standards, implemented and monitored by law
Colombiaˇs Economy
Colombia’s economy has been growing steadily, faster than the Latin American
average, and the nation is quickly becoming one of the world’s leading emerging economies. In fact, some economists have included it in a new class of
growth economies, CIVETS – Colombia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Egypt, Turkey and
South Africa – which are characterized by their dynamism and high prospects
for growth in the coming decades. Despite its reputation, Colombia has grown
and changed to become the third most “Business Friendly” country in Latin
America, according to the World Bank’s Doing Business report.
With Colombiamoda, Colombia celebrates each year its fashion industry. SIPPO
and Procolombia are supporting the Colombian fashion industry by showing a
selection of brands and garment producers from different fields, offering different products within this brochure. There’s a lot to see at Colombiamoda, which
is always worth a visit.
Country
information
Colombia has developed a stable economy
during the last years and has erased the
stigma of violence of the past.
Political, demographic and economic situation
Colombia is a constitutional republic in north-western South America. The
country is bordered to the east by Venezuela and Brazil; to the south by Ecuador and Peru; to the north by the Caribbean Sea; to the northwest by Panama;
and to the west by the Pacific Ocean. With approx 48 million inhabitants,
Colombia has the third largest population in South America.
Capital Bogotà
Population est. 48’000’000
Time zone GMT -5 hours
Official language Currency Spanish

Trade
Main export products: oil, coal, nickel, gold, flowers, coffee, bananas, tropical fruits, textiles and clothing. Colombia’s economy has experienced steady
growth over the past years because of an export-oriented growth strategy
and an improved security situation in the country. The government’s economic policy and stable democratic security have led to a growing confidence in the economy.
Colombia has also largely erased the stigma it bore for years as a result of the
violence inflicted by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC)
and other terrorist groups. The scars – diminished today under a stable, wellsupported governmental structure – have not totally healed, but especially
in urban areas visitors can move about in relative safety, although caution is
still advised.
Even the city of Medellín – once labeled the murder capital of the world and
home to the notorious Medellín drug cartel that held power in the latter
part of the last century – has made considerable progress towards creating a
stable, safe environment and cultural milieu in which its citizens can move
around without fear and its children can grow up with a sense of ambition
and hope for the future. And, in an affirmation of the city’s improving security, global and regional political, cultural, sports and other organizations
are now scheduling important meetings and events in Medellín.
ColombiaˇS Fashion Industry
9
Medellín is the center of Colombia’s textile and apparel industry, which
boasts a number of large manufacturers doing business in a global climate,
and quite a large number of smaller manufacturers and brands.
Transport and logistics
Colombia is the only South American country with ports open to both
oceans (Pacific and Atlantic) and the Caribbean. Barranquilla is the main
Atlantic port, Cartagena is in the Industrial Zone facing the Caribbean, and
Buenaventura is on the Pacific Coast. Colombia’s mountainous terrain, however, makes land transportation difficult. For the European market, transportation by sea takes approximately 17 days.
Trade facts
Colombia is the EU’s fourth most important economic partner in the region,
with a trade volume of EUR 11.884 billion. The EU is Colombia’s second biggest trading partner. In June 2012 the EU signed a Free Trade Agreement with
Colombia.
The government also encouraged exporters to diversify their customer base
beyond the United States and Venezuela, traditionally Colombia’s largest
trading partners. The government is pursuing free trade agreements with
European and Asian partners and awaits the approval of a Canadian trade
accord by Canada’s parliament.

Main fashion
trade fairs in
Colombia
The lively industry has developed platforms
for brands, designers and fabrics from
Colombia and offers interesting fairs and
exhibitions.
COLOMBIAMODA
Passion for business, fashion trends and shared knowledge are the three
components of Colombiamoda. The Colombian Fashion Week is a city event
which has established itself within Latin America as representative of the
whole fashion business in the region.
A venue where you find new stories. Stories pertaining to brands which express ideas and identities through fashion in tune with the everyday lifestyles
of the people.
This comprehensive commercial exhibition takes place each year over three
days in the last week of July. It offers different fashion platforms to learn about
the proposals of designers and a space devoted to lectures led by different
keynote speakers, fashion strategists from around the world.
Three scenarios that come together with a single purpose: to connect you to
different creative industries through inspiring experiences that show you the
immensity of their world. Approximately 7,400 m2, 61,000 visitors and 650
exhibitors.
COLOMBIATEX
Colombiatex of the Americas is a 3-day event held in January each year at
the Plaza Mayor in Medellin, Colombia. In 2015, more than 500 exhibitors
presented their products to around 26,000 visitors. Colombiatex is the leading
trade show of textiles and merchandise and chemical products for the Latin
American apparel, textile and home decoration industry. It has positioned
itself as the most important business hub for the textile sector with a secondto-none value proposition. Aside from being the trade show that opens the
business agenda for the American continent, Colombiatex is also where supply and demand are united within all business segments and for the entire
garment industry. Moreover, it is a launching pad for local and international
brands to distribute throughout Latin America.

Faculties
With the growth in the textile and fashion
industry, universities started programs
dedicated to design, product management
and textiles technology.
Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano
Fashion Design and Management Program
The Fashion Design and Management Program received accreditation by
the Ministry of Education in December 2013. The first class will graduate
in 2018, and the title granted will be that of Bachelor in Fashion Design and
Management. In 2014 an academic structure, based on an academic credits
system with a total of 146 credits, was implemented. The student may take
courses from other programs to foster multidisciplinary studies and work.
The Program includes a major in fashion business administration and
marketing, denoting the extent to which such a link in the product chain is a
determining factor for national development. This major proposes studies in
the principles of fashion business administration and each and every step of
the production chain, from product concept and initial development, all the
way to retail sales strategy or to the supply chain. Promotion, sales and the
analysis of consumer behavior, at the national and international levels, consider the optimal use of resources, and respect for the environment and fair
trade. The professional will gain a sustainable vision concerning ecological,
ethical, social and economic values. Students will be trained in research,
practice and entrepreneurship, in order to have a critical and global idea of
design and to propose innovative solutions that will have a positive impact
in the environment.

Fundación Tecnológica
LCI - Technology Foundation is an institution of higher education subject to
inspection and supervision by the Ministry of Education since 1997 and is
located in Bogota and Barranquilla. Students have the choice between two
programs covering fashion.
Fashion offers a wide array of higher education possibilities which go far beyond the manufacturing of garments or having good fashion taste. Armed
with efficient business plans and communications, alumni from our school
become fundamental pillars of the industry around the globe.
The program is intended to equip fashion creators with conceptualization
skills and the ability to generate collections. This process is developed in
seven 4-month terms divided into three stages: a first foundation stage to
acquire and consolidate knowledge, a second exploration stage where the
student designs and develops his/her own projects in the field clothing for
men and children, and lastly, a professionalization stage during which the
student develops his/her dissertation covering concept, design and creation, thus taking away a portfolio of photographs and publications forming
a brand image.

Colegiatura Colombiana
The Fashion Design program fosters the gathering of fundamental knowledge of the fashion business by approaching the topics of design, communication and production.
Professionals are trained through processes based on research, design,
product techniques, communication and brand management.
Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana
Garments Design brings together all the activities involved in the creative
conception of a project that answers the fashion needs of an individual. Students study objects, processes, services and systems.
The garment as a project is a key factor in humanizing technologies as it involves innovative, cultural, social and economic dimensions through which
it is possible to express the way of living, feeling, seeing and interpreting the
world and the surroundings. Therefore men and women, with their anthropological, physical, spiritual and social features and their cultural, economic
and political expressions, are the core of knowledge when pursuing the Garments Design program.

Generalized System of Preferences and GSP+
GSP allows originating products from a range of countries to be imported
into the EU at a reduced or zero rate of duty. The latest GSP further promotes
sustainable development and good governance by allowing more countries to become eligible for GSP+, which provides additional preferences to
vulnerable countries that ratify and effectively implement core international
conventions on the environment, labor and human rights.
Some GSP countries are grouped so that goods can be processed in any country within the group and still be eligible for import into the EU under GSP.
This is known as regional cumulation.

the production of textiles, clothing and leather products reached a value of
around USD 3.6 billion. Of this amount, USD 666 million was on textiles, USD
2.3 billion on apparel and USD 640 million on leather goods. Thus, the textile
industry’s share of industrial production in the country is 12% and it creates
1.4% of the gross domestic product (GDP). (Source: Textination GmbH)

Colombia remains a significant cotton producer in Latin America, accounting for 21,000 tons in 2012, and the country produced approximately 35,000
tons of cotton in 2013/14. However, the Colombian textile industry consumes
74,000 tons of cotton, much higher than its production capability without a

Apparel Industry
Social standards are implemented at a
governmental level. 4 to 6-week production cycles and high quality standards are
making the Colombian apparel industry
attractive also for the European markets.
Social Standards
Colombia’s textile and apparel sector has also been implementing programs
to ensure compliance with labor, social, and environmental codes – criteria
increasingly being used by U.S. companies in selecting foreign partners.
This is a very positive point for when new sales strategies are being initiated
to tackle the European markets. Indeed, working with very demanding US
brands and distributors has allowed Colombian companies to reach a high
level of social responsibility consciousness.
Production cycles
Since 2005 Colombia’s apparel industry has been shifting its focus from
basic garments to higher-end fashion items at competitive prices and offering full-package programs that involve much greater coordination between
textile and apparel producers. Efforts to expand and strengthen the linkages
between the textile and apparel industries have therefore become a priority.
As a result of all these efforts, many CMT companies have successfully revamped their business models to become full-package providers for important international brands and distributors. This is one of the most significant
successes of the Colombian clothing industry. For the U.S. market, Colombian apparel producers are able to offer a 4 to 6-week garment production
(excl. fabric sourcing) and delivery cycle and rapid transportation.
Production standards
Colombia’s apparel producers are known for their dependability and quality control. Many facilities meet ISO certification requirements – i.e., inter
nationally recognized standards for world class production. However, it is
important to note that Colombian clothing companies seem more aware of
brands’ and distributors’ codes of conduct than international CSR labels and
certifications.
Distribution and branding
The Colombian textiles and clothing industry benefits from a very strong
and fast-growing domestic retail sector. New malls have mushroomed all
over the country, offering a modern and exciting shopping experience to
Colombian consumers.
Colombian Fashion Designers
One of the most impressing characteristics of the Colombian textiles and
clothing industry concerns the role played by famous Colombian designers.
Very few textiles and clothing production countries have been able to progressively develop a fashion image on a par with Colombia. The country
has fostered several well-reputed professional designers who have actively
participated in the creation of a very active South American fashion hub.
