Show the Love at Our Library, April 12-18
National Library Week
Love your library the week of April 12-18, 2015, and help celebrate the national theme, Unlimited
Possibilities @ Your Library.
This special week in the life of national libraries was first promoted in 1958 and has become a
national observance among libraries from sea to shining sea sponsored by the American Library
Association (ALA). Help us to celebrate the contributions of The Venice Public Library, its
librarians, and staff and promote library use and support.
Head librarian Ann Hall tells us this year’s “unlimited possibilities” theme dovetails with a great
year of Friends support of the library. “All the programs at the Venice Library, whether literary,
musical, or just plain entertaining, are completely paid for by your contributions,” she said, “the
summer reading program and all the various activities associated with it were paid for by the
Venice FOL. In addition, two AWE Early Literacy stations in the Youth Department were replaced.
From lectures and classes, to equipment and awards—not to mention all our media!--this library
and the Friends have provided Venice with unlimited possibilities for enrichment.”
Across the nation, celebrations during National Library Week will include National Library Workers
Day, on the Tuesday of National Library Week (April 14), when everyone, including Friends groups
recognize staff and volunteer contributions, and Celebrate Teen Literature Day, on Thursday, April
16, to raise awareness that young adult and new adult literature is an important, developing genre
for teens and young professionals everywhere. So please join us at the library and bring your
friends. You wouldn’t want to miss it!
History (from the ALA website)
In the mid-1950s, research showed that Americans were spending less on books and more on
radios, televisions and musical instruments. Concerned that Americans were reading less, the ALA
and the American Book Publishers formed a nonprofit citizens’ organization called the National
Book Committee in 1954. The committee's goals were ambitious. They ranged from "encouraging
people to read in their increasing leisure time" to "improving incomes and health" and "developing
strong and happy family life."
In 1957, the committee developed a plan for National Library Week based on the idea that once
people were motivated to read, they would support and use libraries. With the cooperation of ALA
and with help from the Advertising Council, the first National Library Week was observed in 1958
with the theme "Wake Up and Read!"
National Library Week was observed again in 1959, and the ALA Council voted to continue the
annual celebration. When the National Book Committee disbanded in 1974, ALA assumed full
sponsorship.

Library Staff and Volunteers Wake Up With a Smile:
Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on March 18 a hit!
by Friends board member, Camille Cline
Thanks to the Friends of the Venice Library, most notably Special Events Chair Kati Burns, the
Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast in March showed our staff and volunteers how much they mean
to us.
Outgoing president June Lee Reninger, who has done a tremendous job leading the Friends over
the past two years, welcomed everyone at Grace United Methodist Church’s Triplett Family
Enrichment Center reception hall. Head librarian Ann Hall followed, citing the number of hours
10,686 our volunteers gave last year, the equivalent of five paid staff people! Ms. Hall recognized
and thanked our honorees:
Circulation
Ralph Barnes
Marion Barnes
Joyce Bennett
Betty Black
Judy Friel
Valerie Oakley
Bookstore
Gail Weiser
Youth
Mary Dullinger
Genealogy
Chuck Ford

Honorees, staff, and volunteers were treated to a full breakfast of eggs, biscuits and gravy,
pancakes, sausage, and fruit by the United Methodist Men. While enjoying breakfast, everyone
was treated to a very special performance by Venice Symphony violinist William Somach. On behalf
of the Venice Public Library Staff and the Friends of the Venice Library Board, let us again thank
you for your time, dedication, and spirit that go into making our library truly one of a kind.
Genealogically Speaking
It’s getting little warmer outside and the genealogy area is still buzzing with
activity.
We have a new volunteer who is filling the Friday morning slot. Her name is Laura
Scott and she has all kinds of knowledge and experience in genealogy. So, bring
your questions or just stop by to say hello. Welcome to Laura!

Adult Programs
Hello Friends,
Well it has been quite a season, with our program venues spread to three
different sites. We want to thank the folks at the Venice Art Center and the folks
at the Venice Community Center for being so accommodating on such short
Roland Marcotte
notice. We still have one program left in April: Baila Miller’s final lecture on the
Armory show and Modern Art in America. That will be on Friday, April 17 at
2:00 p.m. at the Venice train depot. The Thursday films are still cancelled until the meeting room
can be reopened. And we do not know when that will occur. Despite the inconvenience, we were
still able to hold some wonderful events, especially our live music concerts. On behalf of our
grateful patrons, I want to again thank the FOL for its generous support.
As soon as the decision is made on how to resolve the meeting room situation, we will let the
Friends know. Keep checking the monthly calendar too. I have moved forward and already
reserved spots for some of your favorite lectures and programs for next year. I hope to see you
there. Have a great summer.

The summer ready theme for 2015 is Every Hero Has a
Story for children, for tweens and teens: Unmask, and for
adults: Escape the Ordinary. Studies indicate that
summer reading programs have a very positive effect on
children’s literacy skills. Have fun reading together
during the 8-week program. Check our online calendar

Create a Small Dos-à-Dos Book
Saturday, April 18th Noon to 2:00 p.m.
We will be creating a dos-a-dos (back to back) book. A signature or group of pages will be sewn in
each section. This craft is for youth ages 8-14 years old. Space is limited and registration
required.
Youth & Young Adult, continued….
Storytime 100 Book Club
Congratulations to two young readers who have read or been read to at least 100 times. During
Storytime, we are asking parents and caregivers to make an effort to read more with their children.
Each month, participants receive a Reading Log. Parents keep track of the number of times they
read. Reading aloud to children is widely recognized as the single most important activity leading
to language development. Reading aloud builds word-sound awareness in children leading to
reading success.
