Simple steps to a greener lawn
Homeowners should understand the benefits of mulch.
Make the most
of mulching
Lawns and gardens can often benefit from the laying of
mulch. Mulch serves various
purposes in lawns and gardens, and many experienced
lawn and garden enthusiasts
lay mulch to ensure their properties make it through spring,
summer and fall unscathed.
First-time homeowners
with little or no landscaping
experience may not understand the benefits of mulch,
which can be used to strengthen soil and protect properties
from the elements.
WHAT IS MULCH?
Mulch refers to a material
spread around or over a plant
to enrich and/or insulate its
soil. Many homeowners prefer mulch made of wood chips,
which is both effective and
readily available. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that organic mulches,
which include leaves, wood
chips, compost or grass clippings, can be used by homeowners who want to develop
eco-friendly landscapes.
WHY MULCH?
Mulching can benefit plants
around a property in various
ways. Many people lay mulch
because the mulch helps soil
retain moisture in the summer, when temperatures tend
to be at their hottest. This can
help plants survive summer
heat waves.
Mulch also can be used to
suppress weeds. Weeds, which
steal moisture plants need to
build strong roots and survive
summer, need light to grow.
When laid correctly, mulch deprives weeds of the light they
need to grow. Organic mulches can even provide homes for
crickets and a type of beetle
that feed on weed seeds.
Mulch also can deter harmful pests depending on the
type of mulch homeowners
choose.
When purchasing mulch,
homeowners will have to
choose between the aforementioned organic mulch or
man-made mulches, which
may be made of plastic or
rubber. While man-made
mulches may repel pests, they
also can have adverse effects.
Plastic, for example, can heat
up in the summer and cause
plants to burn. Certain organic
mulches can repel insects that
can threaten plants. That’s because the majority of organic
mulches increase the amount
of beneficial bacteria in the
soil, and they also increase the
presence of helpful insects that
do not pose a threat to plant
life. Those helpful insects help
keep harmful insects at bay.
Compost is a type of organic
mulch that may attract harmful insects. While that does not
mean homeowners should shy
away from using compost as
mulch, they should know that
they may need to employ organic insecticides to combat
their unwanted guests.
Mulch is a potentially valuable tool homeowners can use
to improve the look and health
of their properties.
Many homeowners aspire to have lush green lawns.
Thriving, healthy lawns can
make homeowners proud and
improve their property values, as the lawns make homes
more attractive to prospective
buyers when those homes hit
the market. While lush lawns
won’t suddenly appear overnight, homeowners can take
certain steps toward creating
the stunning green lawns of
their dreams.
• Don’t overreact to brown
lawns. Lawns can turn brown
for various reasons, but overreacting at the first sign of
brown grass can make the
situation worse. Some lawns
turn brown because they have
gone dormant to save energy
for the cooler and more damp
days to come. Applying fertilizer in such situations can
damage rather than revitalize
lawns. Fertilizers or chemicals
applied to brown lawns may
burn the lawn, creating additional stress that potentially
hinders the lawns’ recovery.
• Aerate compacted soil.
Compacted soil may be the
culprit behind discolored
lawns. Over time, soils of all
kinds can become compacted,
which prevents moisture from
reaching a lawn’s roots. As a
result, the roots don’t grow and
the grass is denied the nutrients it needs to thrive. Aeration
combats compacted soil by
poking tiny holes in the ground
to loosen the soil. Speak with
a landscaping professional
about the best time to aerate,
which typically only needs to
be done once per year. As compacted soil becomes looser,
the lawn will become more resistant to drought and begin to
resemble the lush green lawn
you’re aiming for.
• Raise your mower blades.
Some homeowners set their
mower blades to the lowest
possible setting so they can
extend the intervals between
cuts and reduce the number
of times they mow in the hot
summer sun. But cutting the
grass too short exposes the
soil to the sun, making it difficult for soil to retain moisture
and promote deep, strong
plant roots. When raising the
blades, inspect them to make

to your property
Many people are familiar
with the idea that a strong first
impression can go a long way.
While that idea is most often
referenced in regard to personal interactions, it’s also applicable to real estate.
When selling a home,
homeowners who emphasize
curb appeal may find it far
easier to sell their homes. Curb
appeal refers to the impression a home’s exterior makes
on people seeing the home for
the first time.
In 2014, the online real
estate database Zillow® surveyed real estate agents and
found that curb appeal was
one of the five most important factors when selling a
home.
Projects that improve curb
appeal can be vast undertakings or simpler projects, and
the following are a handful of
projects to improve a home’s
curb appeal that run the
gamut from simple to complex.
• Clean up the yard. Cleaning up the yard is among the
simpler yet most effective
projects to improve a home’s
curb appeal. When selling
their homes, homeowners
should clear the yard of any
clutter, including kids’ toys,
grass clippings or items that
might be scattered throughout
the yard.
A cluttered yard suggests
homeowners do not care
much about their home’s appearance, and that may lead
buyers to think that indifference extended to maintaining
the home’s interior as well.
Many buyers will ignore properties without any external
aesthetic appeal, but cleaning
up the yard does not require
much effort or expense on the

• Make the main entryway
more inviting. Creating a more
inviting entryway won’t be as

as well.
Curb appeal can add a lot to
a home, while lack of such appeal can make a home difficult

Freshen up your home for the spring season
After a few months of chilly temperatures, come spring, many homeowners
are eager to throw open their windows
and doors and breathe new life into
their homes.
Simple changes made now — even
before the weather begins to warm
up — can improve interior spaces
and brighten the atmosphere of a
home.
• Go plant shopping. Research from
NASA suggests adding at least one
plant in your home per 100 square feet
is efficient enough to clean air. Fresh
foliage also makes a home feel warm
and inviting. Watering and misting
plants introduces moisture into indoor air, which can make rooms overcome with dry air from heating systems
feel comfortable. Just be sure to avoid

Tips for safer renovations
Home renovation projects
vary in scope. Something as
simple as repainting a bedroom counts as a renovation
project, as does a full kitchen
remodel. But no matter how
big or small a project, homeowners’ top priority should always be safety.
Before beginning a project,
make a list of possible hazards
and how to avoid them. Here
are some potential dangers
that can spring up.
• Asbestos: Many homes
built when asbestos was legal
still contain asbestos materials. Asbestos has been used
in many applications, such as
in ceiling materials, insulation, siding, and more. That’s
because asbestos is flame retardant and serves as an effective and inexpensive insulator. However, asbestos fibers
released into the air during
renovations can cause respiratory problems and even lead
to lung cancer. Asbestos needs
to be removed under specific
guidelines and disposed of
properly. Disposal typically
requires hiring a professional
service.
• Dust and dirt: Sanding,
sawing, welding, and other
home renovation tasks can
cast debris into the air. Ventilation may be needed to maintain clean, breathable air. Ventilation can also shuttle any
harmful fumes generated from
construction materials outside of the home. Do-it-yourselfers should wear masks and
eye protection to guard themselves against debris.
• Electrical lines: All homes
may not have been built in
adherence to modern-day
codes. Electric lines can be discovered where they are least
expected. When doing demolition or drilling/nailing into

• Tools: Cuts, abrasions,
burns and more can result
when power tools and even
manual tools are used incorrectly. Learn how to use tools
before beginning a project,
and always put tools away
when work is done for the
day.
• Falls: Falls are a leading
cause of household injury,
and the chance of a fall may increase when climbing ladders
during home improvement
projects. Don’t climb beyond
where indicated on ladders
and always have a spotter on
hand when climbing is necessary. Wear harnesses, sturdy
footwear and gloves as well.

Plants can clean indoor air
Gardening is a rewarding
hobby that can pay a host of
dividends, both for the planet
and the people doing the gardening.
Healthy plant life can help
clean the air by absorbing
carbon dioxide and various
air pollutants, while the act of
gardening can help gardeners
combat stress.
Published in 2011 in the
Journal of Health Psychology, a study from researchers in the Netherlands found
that gardening promotes
relief from acute stress. In
the study, two groups of participants were asked to complete a stressful task and then
instructed to either read indoors or garden outdoors for
30 minutes.
After 30 minutes, the latter
group had lower levels of the
stress hormone cortisol and
even reported being in a better
mood than the group instructed to read indoors.
But gardening does more
than just provide gardeners
with a reason to spend some
time relaxing outdoors in an
effort to relieve stress. Gardeners who raise certain plants
may be able to bring those
benefits with them when going inside as well. According
to an article published in the
journal Environmental Health
Perspectives in October 2011,
houseplants can work wonders when it comes to improving overall health, removing
toxins from air, soil and water
by metabolizing some toxic
chemicals and releasing harmless byproducts while sequestering such toxins by incorporating them into plant tissues.
Clean indoor air is important for everyone, but especially so for those people who
suffer from respiratory ailments like asthma.
In fact, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and
Immunology considers indoor
air filtration an essential part
of any strategy to improve respiratory health.
But filtration systems and
air purifiers are often not
enough, and those who want
the air in their homes to be as
clean as possible may ben-
efit from introducing certain
houseplants into their homes.
The following are a handful
of plants that can help to improve indoor air quality.
• Aloe vera: Aloe vera might
be most often associated with
hand creams and hand soaps,
but the aloe vera plant, a succulent that even novice gardeners should have no problem growing, can clear indoor
air of formaldehyde and benzene, two common byproducts of chemical-based cleaners many people use in their
homes.
• Spider plant: Spider plants
are resilient, and that makes
them great houseplants for
busy men and women who
tend to be forgetful when
caring for their plants. In addition, spider plants are petfriendly and can be used to
combat benzene, carbon dioxide, formaldehyde and xylene.
• English ivy: NASA researchers exploring the possibilities of long-term space
habitation found that certain
houseplants were more effective at cleaning air inside
energy-efficient, nonventilated buildings than others.
One such plant was English
ivy, which can effectively combat the formaldehyde found
in certain household cleaning
products.
• Bamboo palm: Bamboo
palms also found their way onto NASA’s list. Bamboo palm
plants thrive indoors, where
they are especially effective
at filtering out the chemicals
benzene and trichloroethylene.

How to prepare a home for elderly residents
Upon reaching retirement
age, new retirees may face decisions regarding their living
arrangements. Some seniors
may opt to stay put, while
others may want to downsize
their homes to save money
and relieve themselves of the
burdens of maintaining larger
homes.
But those are not the only
situations seniors find themselves in. Some seniors realize they can no longer care
for themselves without assistance. In such instances,
seniors may opt for assisted
living facilities or choose to
move in with a relative, such
as a grown son or daughter.
While assisted living facilities
are designed to meet the needs
of the elderly, young men and
women welcoming seniors
into their homes may need to
take on some home improvement projects to ensure their
homes are as safe as possible
for elderly residents.
• Convert a room on the
first floor into a bedroom.
While this may not apply to
all seniors, some men and
women struggle with stairs as
they age, and that can make
it difficult for them to fully
participate in a household.
Homeowners with an extra
room to spare can convert a
room on the first floor of their
homes into a bedroom so seniors won’t have to climb up
and down stairs throughout
the day. That ease of accessibility to the primary floor
of the house encourages seniors to be active participants
in a household. If possible,
choose an area that is close to
a first-floor bathroom.
• Take steps to make bathrooms safer. The National
Institute on Aging says that
more than one in three seniors
over age 65 fall each year, and
80 percent of those falls take
place in the bathroom. Slippery tile floors can make it difficult for seniors to navigate
bathrooms safely, and bathtubs and shower stalls present
additional challenges. Install
grab bars on bathroom walls
and next to toilets to provide
support. In addition, consider
installing a shower chair or
bench and removable shower
nozzle in the shower or tub
so seniors can sit down while
they bathe and rinse without
having to stand up on slippery
surfaces. Make sure any mats
around bathtubs and sinks are
nonskid to reduce the risk of
falls even further.
• Install an extra phone line
or two. Many seniors still rely
on traditional telephones as
their primary means of communicating with the outside
world. Install extra landlines
in your home, including in seniors’ bedrooms, so they can
more readily access the phone
should they fall and need
to call for emergency help.

• Prioritize accessibility when storing items. When
storing groceries, books,
magazines, or other items seniors are likely to use, choose

Five ways to increase home fire safety
An average of seven Americans die each week as a result
of house fires. Most fires occur
in residential buildings between the hours of 11 p.m. and
7 a.m., when occupants are
most likely to be asleep. Your
first line of defense is fire preparedness.
Here’s five things you can
do to increase your chance of
survival in a fire:
• Install smoke alarms on
every story of your home and
outside sleeping areas. Be sure
to test them monthly, clean
them every six months and replace batteries in spring and
fall.

can cut your chance of dying in
a fire in half!
• Have a fire escape plan for
your family and practice it. A
small fire can spread rapidly —
you may only have minutes or
seconds to escape.
When going over the details
of your escape plan, check
windows and doors to ensure
all open easily. Know your local emergency number (911).
Never stop to gather belongings or reenter a home after
safely outside.
• When renovating, consider using fire-rated, noncombustible products. Your choice
