From Windsor Raceway to the Kentucky Derby Winner`s Circle By
Saturday, May 19, 2012 From Windsor Raceway to the Kentucky Derby Winner’s Circle By Perry Lefko It's a long and winding road with some interesting twists and turns that led J. Paul Reddam from racing cheap standardbred horses at Windsor Raceway to winning the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs with a modestly purchased thoroughbred. Reddam, a Windsor native who left for California in 1979 to purse his Ph.D. in philosophy, won the 2012 Derby, the biggest thoroughbred race in North America, with 15-1 shot I'll Have Another almost two weeks ago. Reddam will be looking to win the next leg of the U.S. Triple Crown today in Kentucky Derby winning owner J. Paul the Preakness Stakes Reddam got his start in racing at Windsor at Pimlico Racetrack in Raceway Baltimore, Maryland. But once a harness horseman always a harness horseman. Reddam has fond memories of how harness racing kindled his interest in the sport in the '70s, first as a bettor at Windsor and later as an owner of standardbreds and thoroughbreds. "I can remember going to Windsor Raceway to bet on a horse - the first I ever bet on - called Purple Raider," Reddam told Harness Racing Update. "It would have been about 1973. My friend, Carlo Fisco, was the groom of the horse and the horse lost and I can remember being mortified losing $10." There's also the time he was attending the University of Toronto and plunked down $100 on a horse and it also lost. That hurt even more because he was a struggling student, but he can laugh at all of that now. He's eminently successful, having gone from being a professor at the University of Southern California and California State University to starting an online mortgage company that he sold within five years to General Motors for hundreds of millions. And his lifelong passion for horse racing literally paid off by winning the Derby, worth $1.46 million to the victor. Reddam paid a mere $35,000 for the colt and has made almost $2.1 million. It would not be outrageous to say this guy has a whole lot of luck, maybe even a lucky horseshoe. He admitted to making a six-figure bet - the biggest wager of his life - in the Derby and cashing a seven-figure ticket. And to think it all started with a $10 bet. Coincidentally, the day before Reddam won the biggest race of his life, it was announced Windsor Raceway, which opened in 1965 and became one of the leading tracks of its era because of its all-weather Tartan racing surface and star racehorses and horsemen, would close as of August 31. A recent decision by the Ontario government to end the slots program as of March 31, 2013 with its 17 racetracks has jeopardized Windsor's future. The government has already ended the slots program at three tracks, one of them Windsor, so the management is not guaranteeing another meet. For people such as Reddam with fond memories of Windsor Racetrack, it's a sad situation. "I used to go to Windsor Raceway all the time when I lived in Windsor," he says. "I really liked Sunday nights there and Saturday afternoons. It was a thriving place and it's really a shame to see that it's kind of gone down the tubes and it just closed because (the track's ownership) lost the slots. I remember (driver) Bill Gale in the '70s just dominating the track. That's how good he was. It was just a great time personally, probably at that point I took it somewhat for granted. It was just very exciting to me." Cont. p2 HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 5/18/12 PAGE 2 of 10 Cont. from p1 Reddam ventured into owning horses in 1979 with a standardbred and continued on and off with that breed until a few years ago with Windsor trainer Randy Fulmer, with whom he has remained a close friend. In fact, Reddam wanted to invite Fulmer to join him as his guest at the Derby this year, but the two didn't connect. Reddam spoke to him a few days after the Derby win and invited him to come to the Preakness, but Fulmer said he'd rather go to the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the U.S. Triple Crown, in New York three weeks after this Saturday's Preakness. Reddam will wait to see how his horse comes out of the Preakness before deciding whether or not to run him in the Belmont. Reddam says he developed an enjoyment for standardbred racing because of the strategy involved, the close finishes and the action. Reddam opted to primarily claim some cheap horses in the beginning and bought the odd yearling. While he admittedly didn't have great success owning harness horses, Reddam had a few good ones, including Riviera Hanover, which won a division of the American Pacing Classic in California in 1990, and a horse called Pulse, which won a few stakes. Scotch Cloud topped his list of the favourite horses he owned that raced at Windsor, winning a race in the mid-80s and paying $96 to win. Both Reddam and Fulmer, who drove the horse, cashed on the victory. Reddam still remembers that the year he moved to California, the great pacer Niatross raced at Hollywood Park, known more as a thoroughbred track. In 1981, a friend of Reddam's moved from Windsor to Los Angeles and they bought some harness horses. When harness racing stopped in Southern California in 1996, Reddam lost his interest in owning the horses, combined with living 400 miles away from the standardbred track. He started buying thoroughbreds in 1998 and has had some major victories, but none bigger than the Derby. How strange that he has hit the jackpot, while the track where it all began with a $10 bet may no longer be in business. Across North America, harness racing cards will be filled with some of the biggest names in the sport tonight as Sweet Lou (Yankee Cruiser), American Jewel (American Ideal) and We Will See (Western Hanover) are among those set to race tonight. Sweet Lou was last seen crushing his opponents by 7 ½ lengths in the 2011 Breeders Crown in a worldrecord time of 1:49. Tonight he will make his much anticipated 3-yearold debut in a Sweet Lou was last seen winning the Pennsylvania Sire Breeders Crown in spectacular fashion Stakes event at New Image Media Pocono Downs. And it looks like trainer Ron Burke has him ready to go after a pair of qualifiers, including one he won by 29 lengths in 1:50.4 “I can’t imagine how he could be any sharper,” Burke said. “He came back unbelievably and has been perfect.” Eyeing races like the North America Cup, Burke hopes Sweet Lou doesn’t have to fully extend himself tonight. “I hope he doesn’t have to go as much as I think he can go,” the trainer said. “I think he can go 48 if he needs to.” Burke said after tonight Sweet Lou will have one more race against sire stakes competition before heading for the elims for the North America Cup. “A couple of years ago I would have felt a lot more pressure with a horse like this,” he said. “But after having done well with some other horses over the year, we’ve learned how to prep horses for big races. That makes it easier to enjoy this. Actually, I’m not that nervous.” Cont. p3 glidemaster Limited Opportunity — Unlimited Potential! Afterwards, it was discovered that she broke a sesamoid, an injury that required surgery. She drew post nine for a $34,091 New York sires stakes event. The Vernon card also includes the 3-year-old debut of Handsoffmycookie (Art Major), the top 3-year-old filly pacer who banked over $500,000 last year. She drew post three in her division of the sire stakes. Both American Jewel and “Cookie” will be driven by Tim Tetrick. At the Meadowlands, A Rocknroll Dance (Rocknroll Hanover) will look to kick off his 3-year-old season with a win in a New Jersey sires stakes event. He earned $863,325 last year and was second behind Sweet Lou in the Breeders Crown. Three races later, 2011 Metro winner Simply Business (Rocknroll Hanover) will kick off his 3-year-old season for trainer Jimmy Takter. The Meadowlands card also includes a tough Invitational headed by We Will See. His stiffest competition may come from Special T Rocks (Rocknroll Hanover), a nine-time winner this year. The winner of over $1.2 million just last year alone also took a mark of 1:47:2 at this track in the process, and catches a relatively soft field (compared to who he’ll be facing shortly) for his return. SPECIAL T ROCKS has never faced the likes of the top choice, but he did go a number of big miles here earlier in the year and enters this race off a lifetime best 1:48:3 at Chester. Continually developing 4-year-old will have his win streak put to the test. RIVER SHARK went a monster 1:48 type mile in the dead of winter in winning a leg of the Presidential series; Ford puts up Sears for tonight. DIAL OR NO DIAL brushed to the lead past a :53 half at Chester last out; he’s been here before and is generally very competitive with these types. MEIRS HANOVER was Yannick’s pick of multiple Burke horses in the race; worth noting. Race 7, N/W $12,750 L5 HIGH NOON earned over $300K last year as a sophomore and qualified to be second, not terribly far behind the aforementioned We Will See in his most recent return qualifier. Dube thought well enough to leave with this one last out when making his first start of the year; a very encouraging sign. That was a pretty competitive race for the condition too and he finished just a couple lengths behind the winner. Rates just as good a chance as any; price will be square. TOWNSLIGHT HANOVER makes his second start back over the track after never being in any position to threaten last out. He’s another that wouldn’t surprise at a price; Lambert had an upset winner last week in Mcclelland. Sticking with the inside ones, UPFRONT ELIJAY ED can close and this wouldn’t be a bad spot for LaChance to take back, rally. KEEP GOING almost surprised on the step up last out; will now be a much shorter price and is no cinch. ROADSIDE DELIGHT can’t catch a break with the posts of late, but does drop and was Miller’s pick. Fast at times. Race 8, N/W $18,000 L5 The last time we saw CUSTARD THE DRAGON here I believe was last year when he cut those amazing fractions as one of the favorites in the Meadowlands Pace, and now re-appears with a noticeable driver change to go along with. Couldn’t get close last out at Chester with Western Shore cutting a fast mile, but was a 1:50 type winner two and three back. Was Miller’s tough pick. ROCK TO GLORY moves back to the mile track after facing the likes of Real Nice and Foiled Again at Yonkers; Coleman is in the midst of a good week following her return. ALEXIE MATTOSIE drops from the Graduate where he showed strong speed in challenging Golden Receiver two back. FREDDY DAY HANOVER shouldn’t be entirely overlooked in this spot, and OSCAR OSCAR continues to overachieve. Race 9, N/W $6,750 L5 DIABLO SEELSTER has been racing with moderate success against horses like Psilvuhearbreaker and Amillionpennies, while a number of others in here have been in lower claiming and conditioned levels. He has a history of doing good work over this track and now picks up Sears; I can’t see any reason not to include. SHELLYSBLOCKBUSTER is better than his last; makes second start back from the layoff and he’ll be put into play against these. INTHEBLINKOFANEYE is a bit erratic but has raw ability; very intriguing spot for him in fourth start following the year off. BETTORS CURSE steps up following a win; retains Pierce. The classiest horse in a weak division of this PASS event, the winner pulled the pocket with three-eighths of a mile left, flew past Hoorayforvacation and never had an anxious moment from there. It was his first win since Sept. 30. He is Hambletonian eligible. Driving the winner, Ron Pierce yielded when Frost Bites K made a move and grabbed the lead approaching the half. Pierce bided his time until the stretch, pulled, and had no problem sweeping past Frost Bites K to win by 2 1/4 lengths. Also winning earlier this month, Beer Summit is 2 for 2 on the year. He is eligible for the Hambletonian. The fans made Nothing But Class the 7-5 favorite. Driven by Jimmy Takter Jr. He broke twice and finished fifth. The 4-1 third choice in a field of five, the gelding got an ideal pace set-up when the two favorites, the 4-5 Atochia and 7-5 Up the Credit (Western Terror), dueled early. Up the Credit soon emerged with the lead and carved out :27 and :56 3/5 splits as Clear Credit closed the gap in third. Atochia went after the leader the second time down the backstretch, with Clear Vision following in hot pursuit, and when Up the Credit backed out of it on the far turn, it was a two-horse race to the wire. A rail-skimming Atochia battled gamely, but Clear Vision was moving best all and won it by a comfortable neck. It was a fitting victory for his pilot. Campbell began his career at this track, winning his first race here in 1972, but last night was the first time he drove there in 22 years. Up the Credit, returning from the breeding shed and making his first parimutuel start of the year, looked in need of the race and faded to fifth and last. With the first four across the wire advancing, he’ll thus miss the Molson final. The 5-yearold took advantage of the rail draw and was motoring early as he took command and laid down an uncontested :27 1/5 quarter. He continued to have it his own way as the odds-on Foiled Again moved wide to challenge, and continued wide until they hit the far turn for the second time. Aracache Hanover wasn’t for catching, however, and fended off the late thrust of Foiled Again. To view replay click here 5, WF, $40,000, Trot, O.S.S.
