My First Time
It is with great enthusiasm that I accept the responsibility to
serve as the president of the My Lady’s Manor Driving Club.
The club has a great slate of officers, fantastic volunteers and
sponsors. The 2007 driving year is off to an energetic start
with something for everyone.
MLMDC has already moved into 2007 with our booth at
the Horse World Expo. This very successful event is only the
beginning of our very busy year! There will be a series of
educational events scheduled inside for the cold months and
early spring. There is camaraderie and wonderful potluck
dinners. What’s not to love when a group can get together
and clean harness? Come join in on the fun, meet new people
and learn more about driving. There will be formal driving
events (with all the cool hats and turn outs) and the fun of a
play day and a poker run, not to mention a bus trip and the
company of other fun
people. Take a look at the

My daughter Alex and I were heading south on I-83 to the
Horse World Expo in Timonium. We had the truck and trailer
to carry the MLMDC booth fixtures and materials back north
to be stored away for another year. It had just begun to snow,
and suddenly I heard the dreaded Thwack Thwack Thwack
ThwackThwackThwackThwack that signals a flat tire. I can
see strips of rubber flying off my wheel onto the highway.
I pull over onto the shoulder. There’s a first time for everything, and this is my first flat with a trailer. I’m grateful that
I’m not hauling the horses today.
As usual, the first thing I do is call AAA road service.
They will not work on trailers. WILL NOT! Was I prepared
to do this myself? I suppose I’ll find out.
First, I assess the situation and list my available
resources. Cell Phone, yes. Tire iron, yes. Hydraulic Jack, no.
NO?!! What happened to it? #*^%@*** It’s in the garage
after dear husband used it, and we never put it back! Ok ,
regular jack, yes. Safety vest, yes. Flares or safely triangles,
no. License, registration, insurance card, in case the police
stop to help. Where is the registration! I swear I put it in here.
I just put new stickers on! #*^%@*** Now hoping the police
DON’T stop and help.
It’s snowing harder, but traffic is moderate. I bundle up
to liberate the spare tire from it’s permanent post on the side
of the trailer. (My daughter is wondering how this is going
to turn out, since I am getting a little tense. I have instructed
her to stay INSIDE the truck, cell phone at the ready in case
of emergency or weirdos.) Tire iron is working fine, spare is
almost off. Last nut and bolt—OH NOOOOOO! The bolt is
stuck and spinning from the back. Time for the tool box
under the seat. Screw driver, pry bar, electrical tape, hex
wrench, duct tape, pencil... Where’s the wrench? Oh #%*#!
I used it to get the drain out of the water tank, and never put it
back! Multi-tool’s too small, frozen fingers don’t work...
So next I call someone with more experience for advice
and a reality check—my friend and yours, VP Anne Councill.
Well, she rounds up the incredibly helpful William Coffman
to come help me out. He’s prepared. Big truck. Tool box.

“Previously I was a rider and had some
driving—one pony that I started with a
friend late summer of 2005.
Since the Intro class, I have been
driving Lance to a Meadowbrook and a
road cart as a single at home and away.
We’ve competed in our first Pleasure
Show (My Lady’s Manor) and our first
CDE, shown in Dressage above.
I’m most pleased about our success
in that we have had a lot of fun and
come a long way this year, thanks to
the members’ help.
I recommend that new drivers take
the clinic—it was a great place to start.
Susan Kary has interviewed some members
who have attended MLMDC clinics and is
reporting on their progress. This will be a
continuing series in our newsletter. If you
have a success story to share, please let us
know!

Maryland Horse World EXPO
2007: It was a Very Good Year

We are both humbled and thrilled to say that this year’s My Lady’s Manor/ADS,
CAA booth at the 2007 Maryland Horse Expo exceeded in three days what we
accomplished in four days last year. It blew us away. Memberships, clinic sign-ups,
magazine and merchandise sales kept the booth volunteers hopping, especially the
first three days. Our volunteers have become experts at engaging those who stop to
browse or watch the Laurels Marathon footage that plays constantly on our TV
monitor. We did get thrown a curve on Sunday when traffic dried up! Finally we
were reminded that the last two NFL playoff games were that day and there was a
threat of snow for the late afternoon. It was ok, we just wished there had been more
traffic when Micky Bowen and Jamie O’Rourke were there.
Our most appreciative thanks go to: The American Driving Society HoopsAddis Fund for it’s continued sponsorship, magazines and discounted memberships. The Carriage Association of America for donations of funds, Carriage

From an empty space in the Cow Palace of the Maryland State Fairgrounds in
Timonium, MD, to a well-attended booth. MLMDC provides a venue to introduce
“newbies” to the sport of driving, invite drivers to join the driving club
in their region and show off Jack Day’s Saylor wagon (complete with
coach dog Marty Councill). We also display photos of club members
competing and enjoying their sport, lots of books, magazines and
educational materials for purchase, as well as handing out packets of
information to anyone who walks by and looks our way!
Anne Councill and Phyllis Klimes look at the scrapbook during a

as the people vacuum as he drew visitors into the booth.

get the spare off. I pull the trailer up onto a wedge we made
with the wheel chock and hitch stand I had made with 6x6’s.
Now it’s my turn to perform! I stand at the edge of the
shoulder in my bright orange safety vest—to attract the
speeding cars towards me (just kidding :-} I’m warning them
away!) so they won’t hit William, who is working diligently
in the driving snow to change my tire.
We have success. My tire is changed. William is not
squished thanks to my orangey brilliance. We have survived
the salty buckshot of not one, but TWO of Maryland’s finest
salt trucks. Now it’s time to head down the road to load up.
How lucky we were, my daughter and I, that our first
experience with on-road trailer repair was as uneventful as it
turned out to be. We learned many things.
1. Watch for dry rot on your trailer tires. Look for cracks
around the rims and on the sidewalls. Keep safe, appropriate
tires on your rig. Keep them properly inflated and always
check your spare! Our tires still had lots of tread, but with the
limited use our trailer gets, the tires dried up and blew out!
2. Make sure your tool box is always complete (with a
wrench, too)! If you use the tools, PUT them BACK!
3. A SAFETY KIT is important. Trailer appropriate jack or
drive-up blocks, tire iron, tire sealant, trailer chocks, safety
reflectors/triangles & flares (I also have a safety vest for
PUTTING TO
riding during hunting season and walking on the roadside)
and a first-aid kit!
Have you ever changed a trailer tire? Try it before you
need to! Your “Prince William” may not be around to help!
You may also want to consider a membership in a group
such as USRider, that offers roadside assistance for trucks &
trailers w/ horses, as well as emergency stabling and vet

As Anne has written, it was a successful 4 days at the
EXPO. All is back to normal and I’m shopping for 5 new
trailer tires. Thanks to all who helped out with advice and
assistance (Prince William, especially you!) Alex, Anne, and
Julia, to name a few.
