TO THE COMMUNITY - Community Foundation Acadiana
REPORT 2010 COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF ACADIANA TO THE COMMUNITY A BETTER WAY TO GIVE Our mission is to improve the quality of life in our region by increasing giving, connecting donors with the causes they care about, and providing leadership on community needs and opportunities. JENNIFER DESORMEAUX-GRAYCHECK 2011 © COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF ACADIANA: REPORT 2010 A BETTER WAY TO GIVE Community Foundation of Acadiana is one of over 725 successful community foundations in the United States. We are a nonprofit organization that services 8 parishes: Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion. We connect philanthropists to nonprofits and the causes that are important to them. Donors entrust us with their charitable dollars by developing customizable Funds to address those causes. Donors direct us to make grants from their Funds to our nonprofit organizations that fit with those causes. We are unique because we help our donors “grow” their Funds to build upon what they can give. In this way, we increase giving in Acadiana which we believe can change a community positively. We seek to make giving easier, more effective and to improve our community broadly by impacting many focus areas. We bring together partnerships for critical civic leadership projects that build a better community for all. We provide regional expertise by understanding the issues and needs that shape our region. We are a resource to our donors, and to our nonprofits. We bring nonprofits together, and strengthen nonprofits, particularly through our new DONORSense® database. We provide a voice amongst Acadiana’s nonprofits through DONORSense®, in order to provide our donors with the information necessary to make effective giving decisions and give to the causes that are most important to them, and therefore, we provide a better way to give. 1 COMMUNITY FOUNDATON OF ACADIANA CONTENTS INTRODUCTION: MISSION 1 A BETTER WAY TO GIVE 3 A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN AND OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR 4 DEEPWATER HORIZON OIL SPILL 6 FRIENDS OF THE COMMUNITY 8 DONOR ADVISED FUNDS: LEADERSHIP LAFAYETTE CLASS XXIII 10 CORPORATE DONOR ADVISED FUNDS: WOMEN’S AND CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL 12 SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK GREATER NEW ORLEANS AND ACADIANA 14 BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS OF ACADIANA, INC. 16 COMMUNITY IMPACT: PALMETTO ISLAND STATE PARK 18 FUNDS AT THE FOUNDATION 24 GIVING CARDS 26DONORSense® 28 GEOGRAPHIC AFFILIATES 30 SUPPORTING ORGANIZATIONS PROFESSIONAL ADVISORS PROGRAM JENNIFER DESORMEAUX-GRAYCHECK 2011 © 31 SERVICE AREAS/FOCUS AREAS 32 ASSETS AND GRANTS 33 FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 34FOUNDERS 35 MEMORIALS AND HONORARIA 36 BOARD, PAST DIRECTORS, EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT AND COMMITTEES 2 IN CONCLUSION A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN AND OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR TO OUR FRIENDS In December of 2000, The Legacy Foundation of Acadiana was introduced. The concept of a community foundation was new, but the vision of its charter leadership – Elaine Abell, Kathy Ashworth, Don Bacque, Barry Berthelot, Gerald Boudreaux, Roland Dugas, Mike Hamner, Mike Hollier, Mike Michot, Frank Neuner, Hank Perret, Jim Prince, Rae Robinson, Robert Trahan, and Gail Romero – ensured this to be good for Acadiana. Combined with the initial guidance and support of United Way of Acadiana and its Board and leadership, including Margaret Trahan and Tom Will, and subsequent workplace provision by the Moody Company, the Foundation had a promising start. We are honored by our Founders, Friends and donors that have entrusted us with their philanthropic objectives and dreams over our first 10 years, including the gift of a new building. The Foundation ended 2010 with almost $50 million in assets and cumulative grants of nearly $20 million. Additionally, the Foundation will disburse $30 million for the BP Louisiana Tourism Recovery Program. Community Foundation of Acadiana is south-central Louisiana’s premier philanthropic organization. Join us! Let us help organize and structure YOUR philanthropy. We look forward to serving you. David T. Calhoun Chair Raymond J. Hébert Executive Director 3 DEEPWATER HORIZON OIL SPILL 4.20.2010 Louisiana’s coastal wetlands and its communities were deeply affected by the Oil Spill aftermath. It shattered our environmental, economic and cultural health. The Foundation and its donors provided regional leadership and immediate response to this disaster, in addition to longterm recovery funding. BP agreed to help rebuild Louisiana’s tourism industry: The BP Tourism Recovery Fund was established with a Memorandum of Understanding between the State and BP which included the Foundation’s role to create a $30 million dollar Fund for marketing Louisiana as a tourist destination. Because of its transparency and its expertise, the Foundation was chosen to act as a conduit to dispense the funds to all of the affected parishes in our region. “We appreciate Community Foundation of Acadiana for working with us…” said Lieutenant Governor Jay Dardenne, “…My goal was to maximize the amount of money available to promote Louisiana…” VALERIE GONSOULIN 2010 © 4 The Gulf Aid Acadiana Fund was created by singer-songwriter Zachary Richard, avid kayak fisherman Valerie Gonsoulin and community organizer-producer Todd Mouton to assist in restoring the economic and ecological vitality of Louisiana’s coastal wetlands, namely for the Acadiana Gulf coast. Local and national musicians partnered with the Foundation in a fiscal sponsorship called “For Our Coast”, which raised $40,000 for the cause. The Foundation made grants from this Fund, for example, to Bayou Grace Community Services which provided immediate assistance to those in lower Terrebonne Parish. The Foundation provided a safe and neutral way to attract tax-deductible donations to the Fund. 5 BUILDING A BETTER PARTNERSHIP TO BENEFIT OUR COMMUNITY With resources entrusted to us by individuals, families, corporations, other foundations and community partners, the Foundation provides hope to children by strengthening our education system, funding for the arts, outreach to the homeless, and resources to help families and children fighting and living with cancer. Additionally, the Foundation provides the infrastructure necessary to support community projects such as the Palmetto Island State Park, the BP Louisiana Tourism Recovery Program and local geographic affiliates. The Friends of the Community Fund supports our infrastructure and creates the capacity to make all of this possible. These Funds make giving easy and efficient. Gifts from these Funds can be granted, at the direction of the donor, to any U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, church or school. 8 Leadership Lafayette Class XXIII member, Jay Chase, shared a moving story with his classmates about a young man who had grown up through Cub Scout Packs Boy Scout Troups. He was just shy of becoming an Eagle Scout, but could not attend summer Boy Scout Camp due to financial reasons. Class discussions led to the establishment of Acadiana’s Future Fund. As leaders in the community, Leadership Lafayette Class XXIII felt it their mission to recognize, support and foster leadership potential for Acadiana’s youth, including those with financial needs, by helping them to succeed in life and reach their full potential. The XXIII Class challenges other Leadership Lafayette Classes to contribute to Acadiana’s Future Fund, which will be advised by Class graduates. 9 CORPORATE DONOR ADVISED FUNDS Research proves that corporate philanthropy can increase a corporation’s return on invest- ment, boost employee morale, provide better employee recruitment and retention, establish credibility for its brand, increase its competitive advantage and enhance customer loyalty. Corporate Charitable Funds, Customized Sponsorships and Giving Strategies give Acadiana companies the opportunity to give back to their communities while utilizing the expertise of the Foundation and receiving maximum tax advantages. We provide many creative and organized partnership opportunities. • 8 in 10 Americans say corporate support of causes helps to earn their loyalty to a business. Employees and customers prefer organizations that are associated with a good cause and work towards a common purpose--improving life in their communities. • 72% of Americans want their employers to do more to support a cause or social issue. 89% of those familiar with their companies’ cause programs feel a strong sense of loyalty to their employers. 93% say it is important for their companies to provide them with opportunities to become involved with social issues. Through its Corporate Charitable Fund at the Foundation, the hospital can promote its services while supporting charitable organizations throughout Acadiana. Grants to events such as the Susan G. Komen – Race for the Cure, Miles Perret Cancer Services – Games of Acadiana, and Woman’s Foundation – Safe Sitter Program, allow Women’s and Children’s Hospital to strategically market itself as a leading healthcare institution whose mission is focused on the well being of women and children, much like that of the nonprofits they support. 11 12 20,000 meals Second Harvest Food Bank has several programs such as Summer Feeding which address child hunger during the summer months when thousands of children are left undernourished and hungry. Louisiana has one of the highest rates of child food insecurity in the country and the summer months put an additional strain on families to provide meals which children receive through free and reduced lunch programs during the school year. In the 2010 fiscal year, Second Harvest distributed nearly 4 million meals through its 240 member agency network with 60 of the agencies located throughout Acadiana’s eight-parish service area. A Fund at the Foundation provided resources to go towards the costs incurred with providing 20,000 meals to Acadiana families and children in need, giving them hope and a nourished mind, body and soul. 13 BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF ACADIANA 2011 © hope 14 Boys & Girls Clubs of Acadiana, Inc. inspires and enables children to reach their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens through offering five core areas of programming: Character & Leadership; Education & Career Development; Health & Life Skills; The Arts; and Sports, Fitness & Recreation. It served over 2,749 children in 2010 throughout its five sites: Abbeville, New Iberia, Opelousas, and two in Lafayette. Of these youth, 65% are from single-parent households, and 92% live at or below the poverty level. It is a home away from home, a safe haven, where children can grow and prosper under the dedicated and hardworking staff who assures every child can work toward reaching their goals. The Foundation’s “Spirit of Acadiana” Discretionary Fund provided funding to support its arts programming so that these children can receive joy through the spirit of musicality and artistic expression. 15 COMMUNITY IMPACT Through the vision and leadership of a public-private partnership between the Foundation, area elected officials and various community organizations, Palmetto Island State Park opened in Vermilion Parish on October 28, 2010. The Palmetto Island State Park Fund at the Foundation attracted nearly $300,000 in private, tax-deductible contributions, that will help to supplement the operations of the park. Many folks worked tirelessly to make the opening of Palmetto Island a reality. An entire community supported the project by way of hard work, volunteerism, and charitable giving. “When visitors come to Vermilion Parish and Palmetto Island State Park, they will understand why the people of south Louisiana stay in south Louisiana—it’s the passion of the people…, and it’s the passion of the people that will keep [the park] open” (Senator Nick Gautreaux). The Park is positioned to serve Louisiana citizens, attract-out-of-state visitors and make JENNIFER DESORMEAUX-GRAYCHECK 2011 © 16 a strong economic impact. convener 17 FUNDS AT THE FOUNDATION 18 DONOR ADVISED FUNDS Our most popular type of Fund. Other planned gifts include charitable remainder trusts or charitable lead trusts, gifts of remainder interest in a home or real estate, life insurance proceeds and life estates. Today, the donor determines the type of Fund and its future beneficiaries. This is a simple and powerful vehicle to create a legacy for oneself and one’s family. Martha B. The Giving Cards are much like retail gift cards; the purchaser, however, receives a tax deduction, and the cards can be redeemed to benefit any 501(c)(3) nonprofit in the United States. The cards can be purchased online with only the click of a button, making giving easier and fun. Card users are encouraged to find information on where to give by going to the Foundation’s DONORSense® database, www.donorsense.org, all the while emphasizing the Foundation’s mission to connect donors to community needs and increase giving. The Foundation saw its Giving Card program reach new heights with the for-profit world, inspiring corporations to customize their giving with the Foundation through a Corporate Philanthropy strategy. Some of the many benefits of corporate philanthropy are attracting new employees, boosting employee morale, and increasing revenue. The best part of a Corporate Giving Card is that the cards can be customized with a company’s logo and given to employees or vendors. The Foundation received positive feedback in 2010 as corporations continued to get behind their community by establishing new Funds at the Foundation and making the Giving Cards a part of their holiday gift giving, a 24 true twist on increasing giving. The Independent Weekly’s ‘Acadiana Business’ publication (ABiz). 25 DONORSENSE ® We connect people who want to make a difference with Acadiana nonprofit groups doing important work. Through this database, we hope to make giving easier, increase giving in Acadiana and thereby strengthen Acadiana nonprofits. More and more, donors are showing a need for information before making their giving choices. DONORSense® is an online, searchable database of comprehensive and objective information on Acadiana’s nonprofits. Since its launch on June 23, 2010, the site has grown to 116 published profiles with another 60 organizations that are in the process of completing them. Search information about their programs, needs, governance, management, and financials. In an effort to impact our community, the Foundation held its first discretionary grant cycle in 2010 and granted $30,000 dollars to 10 nonprofits with established DONORSense® profiles – impacting the community in a major way. www.donorsense.org 26 special thanks to the following organizations that have provided financial support for DONORSense®: Business First Bank, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Anonymous Donor. These permanent charitable resources are under the trusted care of a local Board of Directors. Iberia Parish Enhancement Fund (IPEF): St. Mary Parish Community Fund: In 2010, IPEF made 4 grants to organizations serving youth and children in the parish. The grants were awarded to: Boys and Girls Club of Acadiana Iberia Unit, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana, Junior Achievement of Acadiana and New Iberia Optimist Club Foundation (Inside & Out Garden Project at Sugarland Elementary School). The Iberia Parish Council also proclaimed November 2010 as Iberia Parish Philanthropy Month. This Fund and its Board of Directors awarded its first grants on November 30, 2010 in the amount of $1,000 each to the eight high schools in St. Mary Parish. The first grants emphasized education and were made to recognize the eight St. Mary Parish high schools for their efforts to promote student achievement. The funds are to be used for products, programs, or services in order for each school to encourage students to excel academically. This Fund utilizes the resources, infrastructure, and professional management of assets of the Foundation while focusing attention on growing philanthropy in Iberia Parish. IPEF is advised by a Board of Directors made up of Iberia Parish residents who focus on broad philanthropic fields including social services, children and youth, the arts, education, community development, and more. This Fund utilizes the resources, infrastructure and professional management of assets of the Foundation while utilizing its own board of directors to focus attention on improving the community and growing philanthropy in St. Mary Parish. The purpose of the St. Mary Parish Community Fund is to fund programs which broadly impact St. Mary Parish and to focus on enhancing the quality of life in St. Mary Parish. In response to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Catastrophe, the IPEF Board of Directors elected to establish the Iberia Parish Oil Spill Relief Fund to provide aid to residents of Iberia Parish whose livelihoods have been affected by this incident. 28 Affiliates leverage the strength, organization, administrative support and credibility of the Foundation. While a supporting organization has strong ties with the organization it supports, this strong relationship enables the supporting organization to enjoy all of the benefits of a private foundation without bearing any of the burdens. A supporting organization is able to provide services with more flexibility, at a lower cost, and with better tax advantages. We are proud to partner with the following supporting organizations: Louisiana Parks Foundation (2010) and Louisiana Real Estate Foundation (2006) PROFESSIONAL ADVISORS PROGRAM The Foundation can help professional advisors serve their clients in new areas that strengthen the advisor-client relationship. When professional advisors partner with us to assist clients with charitable gift planning, clients receive the highest level of service. Outright gifts of cash, life insurance, closely held stock, publicity-traded stock, tangible personal property, retirement plan assets, and gifts of real estate are examples of charitable gifts, and when given through the Foundation, clients receive the maximum tax benefits. Under the Foundation’s Professional Advisors Program, the professional advisor can choose to stay involved and continue managing their client’s charitable assets. In partnership, the Foundation and professional advisors 30 help clients reach their financial, tax, estate, and philanthropic goals. SERVICE AREAS The Foundation focuses its primary grantmaking and charitable services within an eight-parish area: Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion parishes…and beyond. $20 million FOCUS AREAS dollars Since 2000, the Foundation has connected generosity of donors with community needs by making grants to nonprofit organizations working to improve Acadiana.
