Kings of Hollywood. 1957: Few pictures
capture the glamour of 1950s Hollywood
better than this Slim Aarons image taken
as Clark Gable, Van Heflin, Gary Cooper
and James Stewart enjoy a joke at a
New Year's party held at Romanoff's
in Beverly Hills.
#2716721
Ian Botham. 1981: Ian Botham of England
smokes a cigar in the changing room
after his match-winning 149 not out during
the third Test Match against Australia at
Headingley in Leeds. England won the
match by 18 runs and, later that summer,
the Ashes. It was a career-defining moment
for Botham and time for a well-earned smoke.

#1076812
Cheetah who Shops. 1939: Hollywood
actress Phyllis Gordon window-shopping in
London with her four-year-old cheetah who
was flown to Britain from Kenya. This is
such an image of decadence that it is hard
to believe Europe was on the verge of war.

The Big Smoke. 1971: Seagulls drift above
the waters of the Thames while in the
background, the billowing chimneys of
Battersea Power Station fill the sky.

40 million images but here are some of my personal favourites
Stamford Bridge. 1920: Chelsea Football
Club's stadium, filled with 50,018 spectators
watching the 1920 FA Cup Final between
Aston Villa and Huddersfield. Chelsea’s
vast south stand became known as The
Shed. The 1920s saw unprecedented
crowds attending football matches to
watch the likes of Dixie Dean and Billy
Meredith. The first Cup Final held at
Wembley, the new national stadium,
was nearly a disaster. As Bolton Wanderers
prepared to meet West Ham on 28 April
1923, the 91,000 or so ticket holders were
swollen by hordes of people who rushed
the turnstiles, broke through the barriers
and steamed onto the ground. Soon 1,000
people had been injured, 60 quite seriously.
Photographer: Alfred Hind Robinson
#2667244
Poolside Gossip. 1970: A desert house in
Palm Springs designed by Richard Neutra
for Edgar Kaufman. Hollywood actress Lita
Baron approaches as Nelda Linsk, wife of
art dealer Joseph Linsk, talks to a friend,
Helen Dzo Dzo. Taken by Slim Aarons in
January 1970, only the hairstyles give
away the fact this is over 35 years ago.

Jumping Geoff. 1966: England football
player Geoff Hurst (foreground) jumps in
jubilation after scoring England's winning
goal against Argentina in the World Cup
quarter final match at Wembley Stadium.

and on the right is Alan Ball.

crafting and framing
As part of our service, in keeping with
the outstanding quality of imagery,
photographs ordered from the Getty
Images Gallery are printed by our own
darkroom craftspeople to the most
exacting standards.
Each photograph is hand-printed, from the
original negatives, onto one of three types
of specialist photographic paper:
Fibre paper: Silver gelatin, exhibitionquality, archival, hand-printed and handprocessed. These types of print also form
part of a limited edition run. Fibre offers the
ultimate in quality both in tonal range and
longevity. Our darkroom craftspeople use
their expertise to choose the emulsion that
will best complement the negative to be
printed. This flexibility ensures that the final
print will always have the best possible
depth and contrast.
Lambda paper: This process offers a
continuous tone and delivers vibrant
and clear colours. Printed on a traditional
photographic paper and printed from
a digitally retouched, drum-scanned
negative or transparency. The Lambda
process offers greater flexibility as the
method of digitally retouching images
allows us to deliver superb print quality
from images that otherwise may not have
been printable.
Fibre, resin and Lambda printing
are offered as part of our standard
service, but we are more than happy
to provide a bespoke solution if you
have a specific requirement.
Our darkroom team, whose experience
in digital and analogue reproduction
is second to none, are always on hand
to offer technical and objective guidance.
Resin paper: Modern photographic paper
which is hand-printed and part-machine
processed. Resin prints have a plastic
emulsion coating so do not offer the same
flexibility as fibre prints. Resin paper is still
considered to be one of the best in the
market and is used as a more cost-effective
option for larger projects.
