V Newsletter Staff Editors-in-Chief March 2015 Mr. Lewis is Optimistic About the State of SoHDA By Martha Jovel, Staff Writer Alexia Baca Q: What are some challenges that you think SoHDA has and what are Mariah Hernandez some possible solutions? Copy Editors A: I think some of the challenges are getting the kids to see the importance of Leslie Espinoza education and how they are completely responsible. They need to take ownership for their own success, and they need to take ownership for Adrian Sanchez graduating from high school. Some of the challenges, too, are making sure we Layout Editor can save some of the kids that appear to give up: How can we reach them? Alejandro Alvarez How can we get them inspired? I don't know if that's only the responsibility of the staff, but also, I think sometimes it's the culture of the kids because kids have to lead in that area too. We need more leaders, even from our student body. Q: Would you have done anything different with the school's vision, why or why not? Johanna Gil A: No, I think our lead teachers and principals are doing a fantastic job. Certainly, we all have areas we Maria Guzman can improve and do differently, but I like the vision of our school. I think the API scores the first three Diana Herrera years shows some of the results; some of the success we've had. And again, it’s a working progress. The second semester, I teach science and returns have better, but each class is very different; each class takes on a to sit in the class when I'm teaching the ninth graders this year, to review the same material they've already passed. The challenge is I'm having to split classes where some of the students are responsible for their science, because I'm teaching them health, and others have already passed that course so they use that as a study hall. That's not very different personality so you have to make adjustments each day; depending on the students, depending on how much people you are teaching. But certainly, as an educator, you have to try to learn from your mistakes. How can you motivate the kids more? How can you get them inspired, get them engaged? How do you continue to solidity that discipline you need to be an effective teacher? Also, I learned how to build a better form with my effective, it doesn’t work very well. It was the start of many traditions that began and are to come here at SoHDA. Coffee House originated in Franklin High School where many of our staff members worked (Ms. Ryley, Mr. Martinez, Mr. Levine, Mr. Myung, Mr. Berlin, Ms. Tsan, and Ms. Narvaez) and those who have attended the high school themselves (Ms. Munguia, Mr. Reyes, Ms. Tsan, and Mr. Myung). It is a tradition that is continued here and has left a large impact on both the student body and the staff. We have members from both groups to participate in the event every year, and it has been a joy to see them all be involved in the event. For many of the seniors, Coffee House was something exciting and rejuvenating during our first few weeks at our brand new school, and has created a sense of security and stability within the school’s culture. It was amazing to see such a large production begin weeks after the school opened and all the support that the SoHDA staff and student population had for each other. This tradition has been altered a bit here and there; such as allowing students from other schools to participate and show off their great abilities. It has been an event where we have all been able to see the talented sides of our classmates that we may not have expected from them, which has positively impacted their lives. “I’m looking forward to the rush, the experience you get afterwards. Just the feeling you get once all your hard work and practice pays off and you are able to walk off the stage and hear the applause.”- Fabian Fabian Torres, Senior at SoHDA Torres Not everyone is a performer, a musical artist, or a skilled lights technician, but Coffee House gives us all the opportunity to join in an event to support those who are. This event has allowed the SoHDA family to continue to grow and become closer. Often times, SoHDA alumni have returned to watch performances to see the way that the show continues to prosper and work out today. This event would not have been made possible every year since it began without the help and guidance of Mr. Levine, and the stage tech crew. They both are Erick Espinoza, Senior at SoHDA what allow the show to actually happen (besides the talent), and be so successful. “My favorite part of coffee house is the aftermath. People always compliment the artists, but it’s amazing to when those few people compliment my work with the lights. That makes me very happy”-Erick Espinoza I really enjoy working at Coffee House. I get to help all those talented musicians show Danny Cach, Senior at SoHDA how amazing they are. It is a lot of work, but I love doing it. It gives me an opportunity to practice and develop my skills as a sound technician.”-Danny Cach Coffee House has been something we have been looking forward to every year since our freshmen year, and I hope it is something that will continue for many years after we leave this school. !4 Dear Dude… How can I be more social? Some people have always been super social since they were kids, and/or some gradually build towards it. The easiest way to do this is by joining teams and clubs that interest you. If you are surrounded by people who have similar interests and passions as you do, then you may feel more comfortable in engaging in conversation. You will gain new acquaintances and those relationships might develop into strong friendships. What do I do if my confidence isn’t at a great level? Confidence is something we all struggle with at some point, whether it is lack of confidence in situations like class presentations, or social confidence in situations like meeting new people. I believe that lack in confidence in any way, shape, or form, is a result in lack of confidence in yourself. Try to list reasons why you are a great person. This may seem a bit vain at first, but you know yourself best and you have features that people admire (even if you don’t think so). The first steps into developing more confidence is learning to love and accept yourself. By doing this, you will feel better about yourself and hopefully want to show yourself off too. My best friend has a crush on me, what do I do? Talk to them about it. They need to understand where they stand and know how you feel about them. If you like them back, you should tell them, and figure out what to do from there. If your significant other is your best friend, I believe it is easier to communicate about issues you may have, and since you have developed trust and a have good relationship, it makes the whole start of your relationship a lot less awkward. If you don’t have mutual feelings for them, you should tell them. They’re your friend first, and if you wouldn’t like someone else treating them the way you are, then that should be your cue to act the way you feel is appropriate. If you feel like they’re overstepping boundaries that you believed were established, communicate that towards them so they understand where you’re coming from. You are both involved in this friendship, as you are entitled to you feelings and beliefs. Communication is key in all situations. My boyfriend got a haircut and I don’t like it. I wish he would have asked me before he did it. He looks so ugly, ew. What do I do? Do some searching within yourself. Maybe you like him for superficial reasons. It may just be something superficial, like hair, that attracted you towards him, rather than his personality. You should see why you liked him so much to begin with because he might really like you for being who you are, and it isn’t fair to either of you to be in a one sided relationship. I’m tired of participating in extracurricular activities because it feels more like an obligation than a hobby. What should I do? If you don’t love what you’re doing, I don’t think you should continue doing it. Extra curricular activities spruce up your resumé, but if it’s something you don’t enjoy doing, there’s no point in really doing it. If it is simply something that you grew bored of, try and remind yourself why you enjoyed doing it in the first place. It’s like having a job. If you hate to do and don’t want to go, but continue to do it just because it pays well. Versus a job you love and makes you happy, but doesn't give you six figures before taxes. Either way you’re getting financed, but one allows you to live a happier and healthier life. (Continued on page 6) !5 Dear Dude… (Continued from page 5) How do I cope with years of bullying? I was bullied a lot as a kid too, mainly because of my weight and little quirks that I have. Kids are cruel due to the not knowing what is and isn’t appropriate to say, and since we were told these things from childhood, they tend to stick with us. I don’t know what you are still coping with, but I still struggle with my weight and body, so I am overly cautious of what I wear and feel like I need to compensate for not having a tall slim figure. The way I learned to get past it was by surrounding myself with people who love and care about me. If you are sensitive to some words or phrases, which trigger you to feel bad, try mentioning it in conversation, or tell the specific person(s) privately so they can know why some things bother you and know for future references. This can help them know to not mention issues when you’re not comfortable with them. I’m not saying to avoid your issues, but try to find people who don’t let superficial things get in the way of getting to know what a great person you are. A family relative died. How do I offer my condolences to those who knew her? Family death is something difficult to approach. Sometimes you’re really close to them, and other times, you barely knew them, so the mourning period varies depending on the situation. The best thing you can do for their friends and family, who were close to them is give them time. Losing a loved one is not easy and often times people just need time to cope and accept someone’s death. This can vary from a few days to maybe months, and maybe even longer. In this time, I feel that they are most vulnerable, so let them know that they have someone to talk to and try motivating them to continue doing things they love to do. Be fully supportive and genuine with them because they just need someone to understand their boundaries and feelings. How do I get rid of depression? Depression is a disorder you can’t just get rid of, but you learn to live with it. It is like any other mental issue: you need to know what helps you and what doesn’t. I believe that the best way to start your journey is by accepting your depression for what it is and try to understand what may have caused it. You don’t need a million reasons, or even one to justify why you feel the way you do and it is scary. So when people say things like, “others have it worse than you,” or, “you’re just sad, get over it,” they're wrong. People react to situations differently and if something has caused you to feel this way, it is as credible as someone else’s reason. Try and find someone who you can see professionally to discuss what is triggering your depression and what you can do for yourself. It might be something as simple as changing your sheets, or rearranging your room, or a larger commitment that may be difficult, like keeping a daily journal. There is a campus psychiatrist who you can see, and you can always find support groups online and on the phone who will be more than happy to talk to you and help. If you are contemplating self harm, or even suicide, I insist that you seek help with an adult you trust, or a friend, who you know can tell for you. It is okay to be scared and it’s fine if it is difficult for you difficult, but just know that someone cares and you’re not alone. Over 350 million other people are going through something similar and your life is worth more than you may realize. Suicide hotlines you can contact: (310) 751-5455 (our local hotline) 1 (800) 273-8255 (open 24/7) http://www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/ If you also suffer from social anxiety and cannot talk here is a chat room created by suicide prevention that you can use http://www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/gethelp/lifelinechat.asp !6 Fun in the Sun By Yuliza Parra, Staff Writer With the spring and summer approaching, we are able to trade in our scarves and thick hoodies and boots for fun light clothing and cute sandals to accompany new adventures. There are many things that we can do, and the longer day that we are approaching allow us to be able to do more and venture out. I have taken the liberty in telling you all the things that I, personally, enjoy doing during the Spring and Summer time. Picnics and Pictures I enjoy strolling through downtown Los Angeles, and one of my favorite places to visit is MOCA in Los Angeles, CA, (lacity.org) Grand Park, located at 200 N Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90012. It is across the street from LA City Hall and has a great view. It is also within walking distance from Little Tokyo, the Arts District, and the Disney Concert Hall. Another park I love going to is Echo Park. There is a lake where you and friends can go paddle boating, and a lot of street vendors that can fulfill your elote (steamed corn covered with condiments) craving. There is a large lap surround the whole park that you can walk, run, jog, bike, etc. if you’d like to incorporate some more physical activity in your day. Both of these places allow you to go out and have a relaxing day at the park with friends and simply hang out while being surrounded by breathtaking views. It wouldn’t hurt taking a few photos to keep for yourself, or share on social networking platforms, like Instagram and Twitter. Fun, Food, and Filters I’m a person who not only likes to take obnoxious photos of their food, but also find new places to explore and expand my tastes. A place I enjoy to go to in order to do this is the Grand Central Market. There is a variety of little places to grab a bite to eat and it has a fun and busy feel to it. I tend to go there to snack, or find spices and ingredients that I can’t find in other Mexican markets. It can turn your errands into something new and enjoyable. A restaurant nearby many of us, that I enjoy, is El Huarache Azteca located on York Blvd. in Highland Park. It is a great Mangonada, (yelp.com) family owned business and whenever I go, I am treated like family. The service is great, along with the food, and they won’t hurt your wallet. I like coming here with my family, or close friends. I wouldn't recommend this place if you'd want an intimate meal with someone, due to its loud and busy atmosphere. Los Reyes is an ice cream shop that I love to go to when it gets super hot. They sell naturally flavored ice cream and it is located on North Brand in Lincoln Heights. The service is great, but Huarache lines get long on hot days, so be patient if they’re taking a while to attend to you. All of their ice cream flavors are amazing, and their aguas frescas (natural fruit juice) are just as great. You can also get a bag of fruit if you’d prefer, or cheat a little more and get something with some kick like, a mangonada (mangos with chili powder and lemon). Whatever you choose, you will not regret! Museums/Exhibits Since many of us are under the age of 18, we are able to get free admission to many places around Los Angeles. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is located at 5905 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036, and offers free admission to anyone under the age of 18. You can spend the whole day exploring the museum and discover something that you really enjoy or find some inspiration. There are exhibits that range from world-renowned movie directors, to contemporary artists and traditional art. A place near by LACMA is a OHWOW, which displays other current artists and LACMA, from (lacma.org) pieces that are up for sale. Although you may not want to buy a 30-foot canvas, it is still 100 percent free, and a fun way to spend your afternoon. This small intimate gallery is located on 937 North La Cienega Blvd in West Hollywood. A museum closer to our side of town is the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles located on 250 S Grand Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90012 in Downtown LA. Admission here is $12, but sometimes they have student offers, so make sure to ask at the front desk. The museum is close by the rest of DLTA, so you can always grab something to eat, or take a nice walk. Whatever you choose to do or wherever you'd like like to go, it should be a great experience if amazing people accompany you. !7 1981 Brings Awareness The History of HIV/AIDs By Diana Herrera, Staff Writer Credits: www.aids.gov/hic/aids-101/aids-timelien Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, (AIDs), is the sixth leading cause of death in the world, according to CNBCs' Anmar Frangoul. The first case of AIDs was first reported in June 1981, only 34 years ago. On June 5th, 1981, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported cases of a rare lung infection called Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP). PCP is caused by a fungus and causes inflammation and fluid buildup in the lungs, reports WebMD.com. This infection was found in five men, which the CDC reports in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), establishing itself as the first signs of AIDs. Now, there are different types of HIV infections and stages, but AIDs is known to be the last stage of HIV. According to Avert.org, whose goal is to avert HIV/AIDs and make information about AIDs symptoms and signs to the public, over 30 million people have died of AIDs(2011). Following the publication of the PCP cases, similar cases were reported to the CDC. However, PCP is not the only rare illness reported.Kaposi’s Sarcoma, a cancer that creates tumors on the skin, or lymph nodes, was reported was reported by the American Cancer Society. In response, the CDC established a response team for Kaposi's Sarcoma and Opportunistic Infections ( KSOI) to help create a case. By the end of the year, around 271 cases were reported and 121 of those cases were dead.On September 24th, 1982 the CDC created the term AIDs. Clinics have been established and support groups had been formed, and In June of 1984, Dr. Montagnier’s Lymphadenopathy Associated Virus (LAV) and Dr. Gallo’s HTLV-III virus were discovered to be the cause of AIDs. In 1985, ELISA,enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, the first commercial blood test, was licensed, following the screening of U.S blood supply. Then blood tests for signs of AIDs/HIV were required. The theory of what created AIDs, caused much hate and discrimination against gay men because HIV/AIDs was the most occurring amongst them. A well known case is of Ryan White, who was diagnosed with HIV at the age of thirteen and spokesperson for AID, died in 1990, which was the same year Congress provided $220.5 million for HIV victims, known as the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDs Resources Emergency Act of 1990. Prior to the act, many people, who feared the spread of HIV/AIDs, were trying to prevent people from entering the U.S, if they had AIDs, and discriminated against people with disabilities, including AIDs. In 1992, AIDs became the #1 cause of death in men between the ages of 25-44. A AIDs diagnosed boy, Ricky Days, a hemophiliac, whom with his brothers tried to attend school, died on December 13th ,1992. News that his home was torched spread, and his attempt to attend school, which his parents fought in court The issue consisted of the fact that he was diagnosed with AIDs and in any injury he bled severely making it possible for other students in school to come in contact with his blood, therefore spreading AIDs. Since the epidemic of AIDs occurred, in 1996, AIDs cases had declined. In 1998, President Clinton, states AIDs to be " severe and ongoing health crisis". Since 1992 AIDs has stepped down from being the #1 cause of death amongst men to the 6th leading cause of death in the world. !8 Dependency Look Up and Look Away From the Screen By Diana Herrera, Staff Writer Has anyone noticed how much we depend on our cellular devices, or on electronics in general? Can you remember someone's phone number by memory, or do you have it programed into your cell phone? Can you wake up early in the morning on your own, or do you have to have the alarm set in your phone to wake you up? Do you text more, make phone calls, or have faceto-face conversations? New versions of phones attract teens. The latest version of Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy becomes alluring to teens, and our time is spent on the newest technology [Image from http://abcnews.go.com] In 2013, a survey was conducted by PewResearchCenter of 802 teens in Teens and Technology 2013 by Mary Madden, Amanda Lenhart, Maeve Duggan, Sandra Cortesi, and Urs Gasser published on March 13, which reported that 78% of teens have cell phones. Those statistic were made in 2013, but now in 2015, the number of teens with cell phones has grown, and the availability and benefits of phones are not oblivious to society. Cell phones help us keep track of schedules, businesses, and news. A business owner, who use cell phones could use, tablets and laptops for record keeping, presentations, access to social media, advertising, and keep track of important reminders. If we are subscribed to specific profiles, we can inform ourselves by just looking up the latest news and keep up to date with news around the world and our community. But in actuality, who uses it for that? Teens use cell phones for updates on Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Vine, Facebook, and in rare cases, news alerts. Those who are hostile would argue that not all teens use Twitter, or Vine, or that Twitter informs us of news updates. It is true that not all teens are using their phones to socialize, but actually use it to be informed and learn. Yes, Twitter keeps you informed with news, but what Kim Kardashian wore to the Red Carpet is not news. If you follow a news cast onTwitter ,then yes, it will update you on news that is important, like symptoms, signs, and prevention. Then, if Twitter, or Vine is not in use, we are using our phones to play games (e.g. Flappy Bird). There are educational games out there and some not so educational, but still informational (e.g. Trivia Crack). Suzanne Phillips in Teens Sleeping with Cell Phones: A Clear and Present Danger reports that 4 out of 5 teens sleep with their phones; however, she explains why. Phillips explains that the reason is the need to feel socially available to socialize amongst friends, making it easier to get a hold of, because there is easy access to the sources that connect you to the outside world and friends. Phillips mentions that the need "to be available" to someone causes sleep deprivation, teens need nine hour sleep compared to adults, who only need eight. Sleep deprivation can lead to, "memory deficits, impaired performance, and alertness," reports Phillips. In high school, students who have to stay up late to work on procrastinated assignments could report how it feels to not be able to sleep enough. In the article by Suzanne Phillips, it states that 1 in 3 teens text an amount of 3000 messages a month, or 100 messages a day. It has been proven by neuro-imaging that texting back and forth lights up the parts of the brain that are also active when using heroin. I don’t suggest we quit using phones, but suggest take time off and challenge ourselves to depend less on our electronics. !9 What Are You Actually Putting In Your Stomach? By Martha Jovel, Staff Writer Credits: http://www.nongmoproject.org The majority of students have heard about Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO's) in their science classes and understand that plants have genes from other plants inserted in them to give them an ability they did not have before, but do you know how much of our food is genetically engineered? The sad truth is that the majority of the food that we consume contains GMO's. Foods, such as cookies, snack bars, chips, even crackers and lunch meats contain them, and they are only a small part of the eighty percent of the engineered food in the United States, according to the Non-GMO Project. If you are not buying foods that are Non-GMO Project verified, you run the risk of eating GMO's. If you think you are safe because you own a garden, think again. The seeds you planted are most likely genetically engineered; Tomatoes being genetically enhanced to be bigger. Google Images. therefore, the fruits, or vegetables, derived from the seeds are considered genetically modified as well. According to the Non-GMO Project, the most common form of GMO's are corn, soy, canola, cotton, papaya, sugar beets and alfalfa. Why? These are the ingredients that are added to other foods, even if you do not eat soy, or corn directly. Identifying a food that contains a GMO might be tricky because they are often disguised as corn syrup, vitamins, yeast products, protein, acid, and sodium, according to the Non-GMO Project. It gets trickier because some ''organic'' foods are not even organic. What's worse is that the food companies that lie about not containing GMO's do not get penalized for misleading the public. There is a certain window, where an amount of genetically modified organism can pass as organic, and not be considered a lie because of cross-contamination. When the word ''natural'' is put on a label, it means nothing. Only products that are Certified Organic and Non-GMO Project verified are the healthiest, safest, and highest quality of food. Even animals are genetically modified. Some pigs, cows, and chickens are given hormones to grow at an unnatural rate to meet with consumer demands. If it's not hormones that are being given to these animals, then it is genetically modified foods, such as corn. We then eat the livestock, who have consumed GMO's, making us consumers of genetically engineered food. Proposers of genetically modified organisms argue that they increase food production, grow in extreme weathers, and help the environment by not having to spread pesticides (since they already contain them in the seed). GMO's are also able to engineer a vitamin that was lacking before, and can help poor nations, who are starving to death, because of lack of food. Meanwhile, opposers argue that GMO's can trigger allergies, cause unknown long-term effects, can spread into the wild, causing a resistance to pesticides, and the emergence of new diseases, since bacteria and viruses are usually found in genetically modified organisms. We live in an era where our world cannot support seven billion people, so unfortunately, unless you eat pure Certified Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified foods, you can rest assured that you will be eating a GMO. Some brands that are not GMO's include: KIND (granola bars), Ian's (chicken nuggets), Once Again (almonds), La Niña (tortillas), ALLGOOD (snack foods), Organic Valley (soy), Teese (cheese), Temptation (ice cream), Silk (soy beverages and products), Dream (desserts), EO (lotion and soap), Hana (skin products), Reese (wild rice), Simply Balanced (beans), Fisher (flour), Minsa (corn products), and Mindful Meats (beef). By visiting the Non-GMO Project website, you will be able to see a variety of more brands that do not contain GMO's. !10 The Taboo That Surrounds Menstruation By Jessica Celestino, Staff Writer Let’s talk about the unspoken: periods. Behind the doors of closed cabinets are the sanitary products we females use when we menstruate. But why all the silence about one of the most common and natural female bodily functions? It is rooted in our biology, and yet, we keep fairly silent about it. Even in a developed country like the United States, we are more likely to discuss sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs), sex, and drugs, rather than menstruation. We are more likely prone to spill all the details of our private moments before choosing to break the silence that surrounds women's periods. Moreover, in other countries, periods are not just an unmentioned topic, but they are also considered the root of true dilemmas. One of the biggest problems surrounding menstruation in other countries is the limited availability of proper sanitary pads and the lack of money to purchase them. In many countries, such as Africa, most families lack the money to purchase sanitary pads and are forced to find different alternatives. Women and girls use anything from rags, leaves, newspaper, toilet paper, cotton, or anything else that will take care of their needs but the problem with these alternatives is that they are not hygienic, so these girls and women are constantly at risk of infections. In some cases, girls exchange sexual services for money to purchase sanitary pads. Such practices put them at risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases. The cost and tedious use of cloth and other alternative pads often drive these girls to skip school. For many females in these countries, menstruation hinders with their school life. Many schools lack the proper facilities, such as restrooms, to change and dispose sanitation pads so girls choose to skip school all together. Girls lacking the proper pads become regular absentees to avoid sitting through class uncomfortably. In Northern India 30% of women reported to have dropped out of school after they started menstruating, according to infochangewomen.org. Apart from all these troubles, females also have to deal with the social exclusions as a result of their menstruation. Girls in school are often mocked and humiliated by their male classmates as they constantly step out to change their clothes. In some cases, females lack proper methods to contain their menstrual flow, so they develop body odors, for which they are subjected to social exclusion. Women are viewed as tainted during their menstruation time and are forbidden from praying and going into temples. In many cultures, women become impure during this time and are not allowed to perform their daily chores. They somehow become unfit to perform tasks, are excluded from any social event and are deemed untouchable. Unfortunately, menstruation is a taboo topic for many cultures, just like cannibalism and polygamy is to us. However, menstruation is a natural female body function and is unpreventable. It is certainly not a disease, so it should not be treated like one. In many of these countries menstruation is a forbidden topic, so the problems that surround it are pretty much unspoken of as well. Therefore, the more it is spoken of and the more acquainted we become with the normality of it, the sooner these problems will become a priority in need of immediate solutions. Cagan Author: Kody Keplinger Release Date: February 20, 2015 Plot: A high school senior, Bianca ( Mae Whitman) has a rude awakening when she finds out by one of her classmates that she is labeled as a “DUFF”, which stands for “Designated Ugly Fat Friend.” To solve the problem, she does not want to be anybody’s DUFF, so she gets help from one of her classmates, Wesley (Robbie Amell), who is a charming jock. Bianca does not want her senior year to be ruined because she is called a DUFF, so she builds the confidence to overthrow the mean girl, Madison (Bella Thorne), and show that everybody is a DUFF. Review: The film “The DUFF” was amazing and it had me and friends laughing. It really showed that no matter who we are, we are someone’s DUFF. It was really funny, heartfelt, and inspiring because it shows that you can grow confidence and shows that no matter who you are, you are always a DUFF, because we are all different. It is a really good high school comedy, just like Easy A, in how she takes in all the judgement she gets from her classmate. It makes points to love yourself and to never let anyone judge you because you know that your confidence is hidden inside you somewhere. It shows you to stand up to the people who think you are less than, even though you're not, because you are as equal as everyone else. My rating for this film will have to be 5/5 stars because it really is inspiring because it shows to accept who you are. This film is really good to watch with your friends. !14 Sotomayor Sports Score Recap By Adrian Sanchez, Staff Writer Boy’s Varsity Basketball 63-33 (L) - Sotomayor at Marshall: Played on February 4th, 2015 at 4:00 PM 65-55 (L) - Sotomayor at Eagle Rock: Played on February 11th, 2015 at 4:00 PM 53-37 (W) - Sotomayor vs. Lincoln: Played on February 13th, 2015 at 4:00 PM 45-41 (L) - Sotomayor vs. Franklin: Played on February 6th, 2015 at 4:00 PM Boy’s Junior Varsity Basketball 45-37 (L) - Sotomayor at Marshall: Played on February 4th, 2015 at 2:30 PM 53- 46(W) - Sotomayor vs. Franklin: Played on February 6th, 2015 at 2:30PM 35-34(W)- Sotomayor at Eagle Rock: Played on February 11th, at 2:30 PM 66-63 (W) - Sotomayor vs. Lincoln: Played on February 13th, 2015 at 2:30 PM Girl’s Varsity Basketball 44-37 (L) - Sotomayor vs. Marshall: Played on February 4th, 2015 at 4:00 PM 51-49 (L) -Sotomayor at Franklin: Played on February 6th, 2015 at 4:00 PM 64-35 (L - Sotomayor vs. Eagle Rock: Played on February 11th, 2015 at 4:00 PM 43-36 (W) - Sotomayor at Lincoln: Played on February 13th, 2015 at 4:00 PM Playoffs 69-41 (L) - Sotomayor at King Drew: Played on February 19th, 2015 at 4:00 PM Girl’s Junior Varsity Basketball 34-29 (L) - Sotomayor vs. Marshall: Played on February 4th, 2015 at 2:30 PM 43-28-(L) -Sotomayor at Franklin: Played on February 6th, 2015 at 2:30 PM 48-35 (L) - Sotomayor vs. Eagle Rock: Played on February 11th, 2015 at 2:30 PM 51- 34(W) - Sotomayor at Lincoln: Played on February 13th, 2015 at 2:30 PM (Northern League Championship Banner) Boy’s Varsity Soccer 4-1(W) – Sotomayor at Wilson: Played on January 14th, 2015 at 4:00 PM 3-2 (W) - Sotomayor vs. Marshall: Played on January 16th, 2015 at 4:00 PM 1-0(W) - Sotomayor at Franklin: Played on January 21st, 2015 at 4:00 PM 5-1 (W) - Sotomayor vs. Eagle Rock: Played on January 23rd, 2015 at 4:00 PM 4-0 (W) - Sotomayor at Lincoln: Played on January 28th, 2015 at 4:00 PM 2-0 (W) - Sotomayor at Marshall: Played on February 4th, 2015 at 2:30 PM 3-0 (W) - Sotomayor vs. Franklin: Played on February 6th, 2015 at 4:00 PM 3-0 (W) - Sotomayor vs. Wilson: Played on February 9th, 2015 at 3:00 PM (Rescheduled from January 30th) 3-1 (W) - Sotomayor at Eagle Rock: Played on January 11th, 2015 at 4:00 PM 4-0 (W) - Sotomayor vs. Lincoln: Played on February 13th, 2015 at 4:00 PM Playoffs 2-0 (W) - Sotomayor vs. Verdugo Hills: Played on February 19th, 2015 at 3:00 PM Boy’s Junior Varsity 3-0 (W) -Sotomayor at Wilson: Played on January 14th, 2015 at 2:30 PM 1-1 (Tied) - Sotomayor vs. Marshall: Played on January 16th, 2015 at 2:30 PM 3-2 (W) – Sotomayor at Franklin: Played on January 21st, 2015 at 2:30 PM 0-0 (Tied)- Sotomayor vs. Eagle Rock: Played on January 23rd, 2015 at 2:30 PM 6-0 (W) – Sotmayor at Lincoln: Played on January 28th, 2015 at 2:30 PM 0-0 (Tied) – Sotomayor vs. Wilson: Played on January 30th. 2015 at 2:30 PM 3-1 (L)- Sotomayor at Marshall: Played on February 4th, 2015 at 2:30 PM 2-1 (W) – Sotomyaor vs. Franklin: Played on February 6th, 2015 at 2:30 PM 3-1 (W) – Sotomayor at Eagle Rock: Played on February 11th, 2015 at 2:30 PM 3-1 (W) – Sotomayor vs. Lincoln: Played on February 13th, 2015 at 2:30 PM !15 March 2015 Sunday Monday Tuesday 1 Wednesday 2 3 -Coffee with Principal 8 9 -Daylight Saving Time Begins 15 Friday Saturday 5 6 7 -Coffee House -Track and Field Meet 10 11 12 13 14 17 18 19 20 21 -Coffee with Principal 16 23 - WASC Visit (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) 29 4 -NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) -CAHSEE Testing English (10th, 11th, 12th, and nongrads) -St. Patrick's Day -Coffee with Principal 22 Thursday 30 -CAHSEE Testing Math (10th, 11th, 12th, and non-grads) 24 -WASC Visit (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) -Coffee with Principal -Spring Grades Due 25 -WASC Visit (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) 26 27 28 -Student-Led Conferences 31 ------------ ----------------- ---------------- -Spring Break- -------------------- ----------------- ---------- March 4, 2015: The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the nationally representative assessment of what students know and can do.
