A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO
DEAR HACR STAKEHOLDERS,
This past April, the Hispanic Association on Corporate
Responsibility (HACR) held its signature annual programs in
Houston, TX. In this issue we highlight HACR’s successes,
made possible with the support of our board, corporate
members, participants, and sponsors.
The 21st Annual HACR Symposium: The Power of Hispanic
Inclusion™ brought together nearly 300 executive leaders
from Fortune 500 and HACR corporate member companies,
and community leaders from our coalition members and other
national organizations. The symposium’s main highlight, the
HACR CEO Roundtable, featured engaging dialogue from:
Denny’s John Miller, MGM Resorts International’s James J.
Murren, and Telemundo’s Emilio Romano.
Participants heard from experts on leadership, personal
branding, and emotional intelligence. During one of the business
sessions, the HACR Research Institute released the findings of its
latest study, providing insight into corporate Employee Resource
Groups (ERGs). Another session featured a panel discussion and
sneak peek of the second installment of Insider Game.
The Annual HACR Symposium closed with the celebration of
the HACR Young Hispanic Corporate Achievers™ program, now
in its seventh year. Thirty-three young executives in Corporate
America, who have shown leadership qualities at their respective
companies and in the Hispanic community, were recognized.
We also hosted the sixth annual
HACR Corporate Directors
Summit™, the fifth annual HACR
Corporate Executives Forum™,
and third annual HACR Corporate
Achievers Summit. Participants
heard from three dynamic CEOs:
Molina Healthcare Inc. CEO Mario
J. Molina, Ryder System CEO Robert Sanchez, and former
President and CEO of Chiquita Brands Fernando Aguirre.
The closing dinner for the HACR CDS and HACR CEF was held at
the storied Rice Hotel, site of President John F. Kennedy’s historic
speech to the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC)
the night before his visit to Dallas in 1963 and where First Lady
Jacqueline Kennedy also spoke, in fluent Spanish. AT&T’s Ralph
de la Vega provided an insightful and inspiring keynote speech.
Thanks to our participants and sponsors for supporting HACR’s
mission. We look forward to seeing you in San Diego, Calif. in
2014.
Sincerely,
Carlos F. Orta

21ST ANNUAL HACR SYMPOSIUM
The 21st Annual HACR Symposium:
The Power of Hispanic Inclusion™
brought together nearly 300
of the nation’s most influential
Hispanic leaders, government
officials, and Fortune 500
corporate executives to discuss
and identify effective strategies
for achieving greater inclusion and
participation of Hispanics in the
areas of Employment, Procurement,
Philanthropy, and Governance.
This year’s Annual HACR
Symposium featured a variety of
speakers and panelists, including
Dr. Barry Posner, eminent scholar
and researcher, and bestselling
author of The Leadership Challenge;
Arturo Vargas, executive director of

The 2013 Annual HACR Symposium
kicked off with a business session
featuring Dr. Posner’s engaging
discussion about his book, The
Leadership Challenge, and his
world-renowned, Five Practices of
Exemplary Leadership® model. Dr.
Posner examined with attendees
a “clear, evidence-based path to
achieving the extraordinary, for
individuals, teams, organizations, and
communities.” This model turns the
“abstract concept of leadership into
easy-to-grasp practices and behaviors
that can be taught and learned by
anyone willing to step up and accept
the challenge to lead.”
“There were lots of opportunities
for interaction and I was impressed
with the level of enthusiasm,
and energy; with the intensity of
learning, really wanting to make the
most of their time with the topics/
subjects/concepts, giving serious
consideration to application and
how they could leverage their skills
and abilities to make a difference,
and with the way they treated
one another, listening carefully to
other’s experiences, insights, and
suggestions,” Dr. Barry Posner said.
“And, it was fun — people had a
positive, can do attitude.”
Delivering a lively keynote
discussion was Executive Director of
the National Association of Latino

2013 HACR
CEO ROUNDTABLE
The annual HACR CEO Roundtable was held on Tuesday, April 23 during the 21st
Annual HACR Symposium: The Power of Hispanic Inclusion™ in Houston. The HACR
CEO Roundtable serves as the main highlight of the Annual HACR Symposium.
This year, the event featured: Denny’s Corporation’s John Miller, MGM Resorts
International’s James J. Murren, and Telemundo’s Emilio Romano.
The HACR CEO Roundtable provides
our corporate member companies
with a unique opportunity for their
CEOs to come and engage with us at
HACR. Participants of the program
understand the power of diversity and
inclusion within their companies.
“Our most important assets are our
people…33 percent are Hispanic. We
learned that if we were to find a way
to make people feel more engaged
with their coworkers, you don’t
have to be the same to be part of
something and we spent a lot of time
on our diversity initiatives, our training
not just in the areas of traditional
definitions of diversity but just broad
diversity of thought, diversity of ideas,
backgrounds. We are a reflection of
our customers, after all,” said MGM
Resorts International CEO James J.
Murren during the program.
The discussion centered on each of
the participant’s respective companies’
Hispanic inclusion strategies and the
role diversity plays at the different
levels of their organizations. They
shared personal anecdotes and the
benefits of making a business case for
Hispanic inclusion. They also discussed
the challenges they see regarding the
advancement of Hispanics in Corporate
America and much more.
“NBC/Universal and Comcast
are really doing a very good job on
diversity. Comcast has the Joint
Diversity Council where they involve

most of the voices and constantly
are getting input on how to be better
diversified. Telemundo is not only
their diverse entity, but really putting
the DNA across NBC/Universal
and Comcast,” said President of
Telemundo Emilio Romano. “By
bringing in a chairman of Hispanic
Enterprises we have someone at the
top echelon of the company; there is
one person that represents Hispanics,”
he added in response to moderator
Norma Garcia’s question about how
parent company, NBC/Universal
maintains diversity practices beyond
Telemundo.
Each CEO had the opportunity
to elaborate on what diversity and
inclusion meant for his company.
Denny’s Corporation’s John Miller
said, “The test is the test of fairness;
the test is the test of equal access to
opportunity; the test is how dynamic
our culture can be and how powerful it
can be by respecting our differences,
by finding things that are in common
that unite us as a very powerful
nation. We have done it better than
other places around the globe, but we
haven’t done it well enough, there are
things that we’ve not learned how to
solve here and its evident. We wear
it on our sleeves every day. And, it’s
why symposiums like this are still
necessary.”
Noticiero Telemundo 39 anchor
Norma García, an 11-time Emmy
Award winner, served as the event’s
moderator for the fifth year in a
row. She successfully engaged the
panelists in sharing their ideas;
personal success stories; corporatewide inclusive employment and
retention initiatives; Hispanic
consumer market outreach and brand
loyalty strategy; and best practices
for providing added diversity in
corporate boardrooms.
