FEBRUARY IS HEART MONTH
Heart disease is the leading killer of Canadians.
There are some risk factors you can't change, such
as family history, age, and race. However, there are
many important risk factors that you can work on:
high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, and a
sedentary lifestyle. Whatever your age, you can work
towards a healthier heart.
Heart attack: Know the symptoms
The key to surviving a heart attack is getting medical
help early – nearly half of all deaths due to heart
attack occur within three to four hours of the
beginning of symptoms. Keep in mind that not
everyone experiences the same heart attack
symptoms to the same degree – some older people
and women can experience less obvious symptoms.
Some heart attacks come on suddenly, but the vast
majority start slowly with mild pain and discomfort.
Many people experiencing a heart attack are not sure
they are having one and may think it is only
heartburn or indigestion. This may result in not
seeking medical attention promptly. Therefore, it's
critical to be familiar with and recognize heart attack
symptoms, and to take them seriously.
The following are heart attack warning symptoms
pain or discomfort in the chest, shoulder, arm, back,
neck, or jaw that does not go away with rest (in
women, pain may be more vague)
pressure, heaviness, fullness, or squeezing in the
chest
shortness of breath
nausea and/or vomiting
sweating, or cool and clammy skin
anxiety
light-headedness or sudden dizziness
If you experience these warning symptoms, the Heart
and Stroke Foundation suggests doing the following:
Call 9-1-1.
Stop all activity and rest (sit or lie down).
If you are taking nitroglycerin, take your usual dose
If the 9-1-1 operator advises it, and you are not
allergic to ASA, chew and swallow one 325 mg
ASA tablet or two 81 mg tablets.
Rest & wait for Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
Acting promptly may save your life!
Primary Health Care is about staying healthy, preventing illness
and injury, managing chronic conditions, treating acute medical
illness, promoting healthier living and accessing the best health
provider for the job.

BOOK REVIEW: The Secret of Magic by Deborah
Johnson is the gripping tale of a decorated war hero on
his way home from the second world war. Thirty
minutes from home, he is hauled off the bus by hooded
men and beaten to death. Needless to say Joe Howard
Wilson is black. One year later, his father is still
looking for justice for his son. He persuades a white
woman, for whom his family had worked for years, to
write to NAACP to request the services of their most
famous lawyer. A not-yet-passed-the-bar young
woman (black) is intrigued by the case and is sent
instead. She discovers, in many unpleasant ways, how
blacks are treated in Revere, Mississippi. She is not
used to never looking directly at a white person, not
being asked to sit down in an office or someone’s
home, having to ride in the ‘colored’ section of public
transport, being told that murder only matters if it is a
white person who is killed; trials for accused white
people do not happen and black people do not get a
trial - they just get hung. This story introduces the
reader gradually into the realities of Negro life in 1946

MARYFIELD CURLING CLUB CELEBRATED CURLING DAY IN SASKATCHEWAN ON JAN 25
Maryfield Little Rockers along with parents and community members celebrated Curling Day in
Saskatchewan with games, singing and cake. The celebration kicked off with the group doing one practice
of the song Mrs. Lemon wrote to celebrate the occasion. The group then took to the ice to practice their
skills. This was followed by a skills competition ran by coaches, Nikki Erickson, Rachel Erickson, Kelly Kay
and Mac Kay. Winners got their pick of Maryfield Auditorium show passes or curling-related t-shirts and
toques. Working in 4 teams the curlers tested their curling knowledge in a “Name the Curler” contest. The
celebration continued with the group singing “Curling Day in Saskatchewan”. Those in attendance enjoyed
hotdogs and a piece of cake, specially decorated for the occasion. All the curlers went home with curling
pins and curling tattoos. Great fun was had by all.

THANK YOU
The Maryfield Auditorium committee extends our many thanks to all who participated in making New Year’s Eve at the
Auditorium a social and financial success. Thank you to the ‘Back 40 Drifters” for providing some great music and to everyone
from throughout the area and beyond who purchased tickets and joined us to ring in the New Year. We will look forward to
having you join us again to celebrate New Year’s Eve 2016/17.
The Maryfield Auditorium committee would also like to thank the many people who volunteered at the Auditorium and the
movies and to everyone from near and far who attended the many events and movies this past year. Without all of your help
it would not be possible to keep this building and events thriving in our community.
