Photography Hints:
1. FOCUS– Most of the time the main subject, at least, should be in focus and sharp even if the background
and other components may not be. Notice the depth of field and see if it is working well for the image.
2. CLEAR SUBJECT IN THE PHOTOGRAPH—Does the photograph have a purpose. Is it clear what the main
subject or subjects of the photograph are?
3. COMPOSITION—Again is it clear what the main subject is? Are there areas or parts of the photograph that
do not contribute to the overall visual effect of the image. Is the subject lost in a distracting background?
Consider vertical versus horizontal orientation of the image. How do the lines of the subject lead into or
out of the photograph? Consider Rules of composition like “Rule of Thirds”.
4. LIGHTING AND EXPOSURE—Is the lighting well balanced, and does it support the elements of the
composition to create the desired effect? Are there good shadow and highlight details with good range of
shades in between? No ‘blown’ highlights except for some desired spectacular highlights.
5. COLOUR—Particularly in underwater photography is the colour well balanced? Are there any colour casts
that detract from the image or do they genuinely help create mood or effect?

appreciate your generous support and the
gracious manner in which our canvassers are
received.
The Graduating Class of 2012 were our first
Clean Team (2011). We have been fortunate to
have the Associated Gospel Church Youth Group
as our Clean Team since 2012. The Maryfield Ag
Society appreciates the Clean Team’s service in
assisting with preparing the grounds and
buildings, setting up shelving units, tables and
chairs, display areas and then taking everything
down at the end of Fair Day. Keeping the
grounds clean during the day and general
cleanup after shelving, chairs and tables are
stacked helps immensely.
In 2008 an Ag member suggested we have a
live auction. We asked exhibitors to donate
entries to the auction. This auction has
provided many laughs and raised over $12 000
that was given to the Rec Board, the Theater
and Stars Air Ambulance.
The Maryfield Ag Society is always looking for
interested people to join our organization. New
ideas are always welcome to make our
organization stronger and our fair more exciting.
The Agricultural Society feels that local fairs are
an important part of the heritage of rural
communities. Thank you all for your support.

President’s Message
Thank you to everyone who chose to come
to our fair today. Your presence and support is
the reason the fair continues to be an annual
event in our community.
The Maryfield Agricultural Society is a nonprofit volunteer organization whose main
activity is hosting the annual summer fair. This
year will mark the 101st year for the Maryfield
Agricultural Society. People of all ages can
enter exhibits into more than 200 classes.
These classes encourage skills that have long
been a way of life in our country as well as
newer skills such as computer-generated
greeting cards. Take a look through the book.
The funding for our fair is mainly from the
purchase of advertising by businesses and
organizations in the Maryfield and surrounding
communities where people from Maryfield
deal. We thank all of the businesses and

RULES AND REGULATIONS
O exhibits must be entered in the correct age
category.
Class O Junior Work: #1 and #2 PRESCHOOL
are free.
Class R — School Work: All memberships are
free.
Admission to Fairgrounds will be:
Adults - $5; Students - $4; Preschool – Free
1. Memberships do not grant admission to the Fair
grounds.
9. No person may act as Judge in a Department in
which he or she is an exhibitor.
2. Your membership number will also be your entry
number; each of your exhibits must have the proper
tag with this number on it. Children not requiring a
membership may register with their teacher for a
number.
10. All precautions, within the ability of the Society,
for the safety of exhibits and persons at the Fair, will
be taken by the Society, but no liability for loss,
damage, or injury is undertaken by the Society.
Exhibitors borrowing Fair property kindly return
same to Directors from whom borrowed.
3. Excepting school work, which must be in 7 days
prior, articles must be entered, properly tagged and
in place by 9 a.m. the day of the Fair. You can pay
your membership and get tags ahead of time from
the secretary. No entries accepted after 9:00
a.m. FAIR DAY.
11. Protests affecting awards must be made in
writing to the Secretary, before 5 p.m. on the day of
the Fair, accompanied by $5.00, which will be
forfeited to the Society if the protest is not sustained
by a majority of Directors in meeting.
4. Exhibitors may enter in as many sections of
each department as they wish. However,
admission to the Fairgrounds must be paid by
everyone.
12. Any person or persons who shall interfere with
the Judges, while in discharge of their duties or
shall use contemptuous language within their
hearing shall be ejected, and if an exhibitor, may
forfeit any premium he may win and be barred from
exhibiting for one year or thereafter.
5. Exhibitors may enter more than one animal in
any section, if so desired. All other exhibits, one
entry only will be allowed to each section. A fee
will be required from each rider.
13. All rink exhibits must be in place by 9 a.m. and
must be removed by 4 p.m. on FAIR DAY unless
they are auction items. Exhibits open to the public
after judging is completed.
6. No third prize will be awarded in any of the
livestock sections unless there is more than one
exhibitor.
7. All animals and articles must be the bona fide
property of the exhibitor, except as otherwise
required by the prize list, and products of the soil
must have been grown on the premises occupied
by the exhibitor during the current year. All home
manufactures and fancy work must be the work
of the exhibitor. It cannot have been previously
exhibited in the same section of the Fair.
14. The Judges are expected to give reasons for
their placings and discuss any points that arise in
connection with awards, compatible with the time at
their disposal

8. Entries and annual membership fees for the
Horse Department and the Indoor Exhibits are
separate.
(a) Department A – Horses: memberships are
$5 per family and $1 per entry.
(b) Department B – Indoor Exhibits:
memberships will be $5 per person plus 50¢
per entry after the first five entries, with the
following exceptions:
Class O – Junior Work: memberships are $3; (if
entering any other classes, the membership is $5)
plus 50¢ per entry after the first five entries. Class
16. Judges are chosen by the directors.
17. All animals exhibited must be secured in such a
way as to fully protect the public. Exhibits of
horses, except foals, must be shown on the halter.
No stallions will be allowed on the Fair grounds.
18. All animals and articles are at the command of
the Directors in Charge, while on the grounds.
19. Ages of all animals to be computed from
January 1st of the current year.

20. No exhibitor will necessarily be awarded a prize
unless deemed worthy by the Judge.

21. Horses not competing are not allowed to
occupy Fair Buildings.

uniformity is more important than size.
Flowers are generally judged on size, form and
condition. Specific standards may vary depending
on the variety.

Overall design is important. Judges look for
superior workmanship.
4. Pickles and relishes should have natural colour and
uniform, medium-sized pieces. They should not be
cloudy. Pickles should be firm, yet tender, not
overcooked, with a smooth syrup. Relishes should
have uniform pieces. There should be no off odours
or mustiness.

ATTENTION: HORSE EXHIBITORS
6. Please be sure your horses are correctly
measured and entered in appropriate classes.
7. Ribbons awarded in Junior and Championship
classes.
8. No stallions allowed on the Fairgrounds or in
the arena with the exception of foals of the
current year. Any person in violation of this
rule will be asked to leave the Fairgrounds
immediately.
MANSASK BORDER CIRCUIT (M.S.B.C.)
RULES: NO ENTRY NECESSARY
Anyone participating in the classes earns points
towards top horse or rider. Horse show placings
will be forwarded to the secretary by the contact
person in each participating community. Tabulation
of statistics from each show to reach Secretary by
September 1, 2016. Awards to be presented at a
gathering in the winter.
Safety Rules for the Horse Show
1. All animals exhibited must be secured in such a
way as to protect the public. Outdoor stalls are
available.
2. Children under the age of seven years riding in
the arena must be supervised by an adult.
3. No alcohol is allowed in the arena. No one
under the influence of alcohol is allowed in the
riding arena.
4. No dogs are allowed in the riding arena or the
hitching area. Dogs in the arena building must
be supervised and on a leash.
5. A specified area for trailers and towing vehicles
is provided away from the general public.
6. Participants in horse classes are under the
supervision of the judge and the ringmaster.
7. Horses not competing are not allowed to occupy
Fair buildings.
8. All precautions within the ability of the Society for
the safety of the exhibitors and persons at the
Fair will be taken.
9. Exhibitors must sign an accident waiver form
stipulating that they will use every precaution to
prevent accidents.
10. Use of approved helmets for all youth under
18 years is required by the Saskatchewan
Horse Federation.

horse (5 top placings).
2) Showmanship - 15-18 years, any size horse (5
top placings).
3) Halter - top 5 placings in championship class
4) Western Pleasure - horse’s best showing in

may happen from any cause or circumstance whatsoever to any animal, driver, rider, handler, or onlooker
in conjunction with any activities sponsored by or under the direction of the Maryfield Agricultural Society.

Exhibit Hints:
Jams and jellies are judged 35% on general appearance,
25% on texture and 40% on flavour. They are
disqualified if the seal is broken.
2. Squares should be 1 1/2 inches square. Bars should be
rectangular, approximately 1 x 1½ inches.
3. Beets should be free of splits, scaling & sunburn. The
tops should be cut 1.5—2.5 cm (½—1 inch).
4. Onions, mature—should not be peeled; remove only
jagged & dirty outer scales; trim roots just below the
base of the onion; neck should be thin but firm & the
top neatly trimmed.
