Helping families in need at Thanksgiving
This Thanksgiving, The Foundation for Lutheran Child and Family
Services will once again partner with Schneider National and Thrivent
Financial for Lutherans, Hamilton County to provide Thanksgiving
meals for families in need. Lincoln Square Restaurant joins our
growing list of sponsors this year. Our goal is to supply 100 families in
our community with the fixings needed to prepare a Thanksgiving
meal. Due to our generous partners, we will also be able to provide a
gallon of milk for each family! Families are referred to this program
through local social service agencies.
LCFS Fights Against Hunger and Celebrates Volunteers
Canned food and bean centerpieces taken from the Sharing Place’s shelves set the theme for the 2014 Fight Against
Hunger Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. This event was held across the hall from The Sharing Place in the Lawrence
Township Education and Community Center on August 13th, and was co-sponsored by Smither Roofing and the Glick
Family Foundation. Lawrence Township Superintendent, Dr. Shawn Smith, gave the opening remarks. The Foundation
for Lutheran Child and Family Services was honored to have Mitch Davis, Director of Global Shared Value, from Elanco,
as this year’s guest speaker. After lunch, 120 attendees, including 41 volunteers, listened as Mr. Davis encouraged them to
find their passion and invited others to champion a cause. While challenging the attendees to “be the change”, Mr. Davis
highlighted the plight of local and worldwide food insecurity. Through generous donations, over $20,000 was raised to
support The Sharing Place food pantry. The Sharing Place is projected to serve 40,000 individuals this year, a 70%
increase over 2013. We are truly blessed to have so many dedicated volunteers at The Sharing Place and Lutherwood. We
are able to offer these services to the community, because our volunteers are so passionate about
helping those in need.

Opening Our Doors to the Public
The Lutherwood Open House and Adoptive Family Reunion
was held on Saturday, October 4 from 11:30am-3:00pm.
This year’s event featured the heavenly voices of the Kantorei
Choir from Valparaiso University. Visitors were treated to a tour
of Lutherwood and program overview in the chapel. LCFS
CEO, Sven Schumacher and Board
President, Lew Beckwith, talked about the evolution of LCFS
from orphanage to residential treatment facility with various
other programs such as YouthBuild Indy and the Emergency
Shelter Care. The walls were decorated with signs detailing
little known facts about LCFS. For example, did you know
that in 1883, LCFS was a nine room residence, on six acres, off
East Washington Street known as Evangelisch Lutherische WaisenhausGesselschaft? Lunch was sponsored by Ed Martin Acura and Ed Martin Honda. It
included sauerkraut, bratwurst, knackwurst, potato sausage from Claus’ German
Sausage & Meats, and desserts from Panaderia y Pasteleria Nery.
Visitors helped commemorate the day by planting a tree in our
Luther garden. This event was brought to a close by a
performance from the Kantorei Choir. We would like to thank
everyone that came out to support this event!
200 Children Received Uniforms and School
Supplies--Thanks to You
As of September 30, over $12,000 was raised to provide 200 kids with two
uniforms from French Toast and school supplies for the 2014-2015 school year. 60
of the kids are Lutherwood/Trinity House residents, and the others were referred
to our program by the Department of Child Services and other similar agencies.

THANK
YOU
VOLUNTEERS!
Congrats to Amanda Hodge,
Director of Finance & Administration at LCFS!
Amanda became one of the twenty-five non-profit professionals
to receive the 2014 Human Services Professional Renewal Grant.
This is a program of United Way of Central Indiana (UWCI), is
funded entirely by Lilly Endowment, Inc., as no campaign dollars
are used for these grants. These grants are awarded to hard
working, dedicated human services professionals that have been
with their company for eight or more years. This grant will give awardees an
opportunity to regenerate and reinvigorate themselves, so they can bring fresh ideas,
and energy to the human care business. Amanda is planning a trip to Italy!
145 Volunteers Visit LCFS for the
ELCA Day of Caring
The young and the young at heart came ready to volunteer
their time and talent in a variety of tasks on Sunday,
September 7th. 145 volunteers painted, stained, cut down
trees, pulled weeds, relocated the Lutherwood library, readied a mass mailing, and
cleaned the chapel, kitchen, multi-purpose room, diaper
dispensary, and the building formerly known as the Center
for Growth & Change. Two apple trees were planted to
celebrate the day, and our Lutheran heritage. We appreciate everyone’s hard work!

An Hour with
Menachem Pressler
In the Spring, more than $3,000 was raised
for the programs at Lutheran Child and Family Services at a free
concert featuring world renowned pianist, Menachem Pressler and
violinist, Ik-Hwan Bae, in Bloomington. The event was sponsored by
St. Thomas Lutheran Church and the American Council of Germany.
Pressler is also a Professor at the IU Jacobs School of Music, and has
taught master classes all over the world. Ik-Hwan Bae, 57, passed
away in July in Bloomington, Ind. He came to IU in August 1999
as Professor of Violin and Chamber Music. He was an incredible
musician and teacher, and will be deeply missed. We are thankful
they shared their talents to help raise funds to support LCFS.
