Commercial Cleaning
and Waterproofing
A durable water repellent coating (DWR) is applied by
manufacturers to horse rugs and coats. If the fabric surface is dirty,
the dirt attracts and holds water, known as wetting out. When the
fabric is saturated, sweat and moisture will not be able to escape,
which will reduce its insulating qualities and ability to breathe.
Nikwax Rug Wash effectively removes dirt, sweat and
contaminants to help revitalise water repellency and breathability
of horse rugs. Once the water repellent coating has worn off,
it can be renewed with Nikwax Rug Proof.
Correct care and maintenance = enhanced performance,
which aids your horse’s comfort and prolongs the life of your gear.

In wet or damp conditions your horse will get clammy,
uncomfortable and cold if the breathability of their rug is
impaired. To keep your horse warm and dry, it is important to
regularly clean and re-proof your animal rug or coat in order
to maintain its water repellency and breathability.

How to use Nikwax
Dosage Instructions
Due to the wide variation in washing machines and practices in
the Commercial Rug Laundry market, it is very difficult to give
precise instructions. However, the following guidelines will
help to get you started.
For turn out rugs with a wicking
lining, such a Bucas Rugs, Nikwax
recommends spraying or painting
Rug Proof onto the exterior fabric.
For best results, Nikwax recommends always using Nikwax Rug
Wash followed by Nikwax Rug Proof (on turn out rugs).
For stubborn stains, a proprietary
stain remover can be used prior
to washing and for heavily soiled
rugs a pre-wash programme is
recommended.
Nikwax Rug Wash can be diluted and applied by hand, however,
the best results are obtained by the use of a commercial washing
machine. We would recommend a machine with a minimum load
size of 12kg (22lbs) or ideally 22kg (50lbs).
Nikwax Rug Proof can be diluted and sprayed or painted on.
Again the best results are obtained by the use of a commercial
washing machine.
Nikwax recommends that
separate wash and proof cycles
are carried out to obtain the best
results. However, many laundries
put Nikwax Rug Proof into the
machine during the final rinse cycle.
Most rug manufacturers
recommend a washing
temperature of 30°C or 40°C.
Higher temperatures may result in
shrinkage and damage the rug.
Nikwax products do not require
heat to activate them, so tumble
drying is not necessary. If the rug is
tumble dried this will not impair the
performance of Nikwax products.
Always refer to the manufacturers
care instructions.
Cleaning
• Add between 4 and 10ml of Nikwax® Rug Wash
per litre of water used by the machine
• The softer the water the less you will need to use
Example: if the machine uses 40 litres
Water Amount
area of water
Rug Wash
Total
per litre
amount of water Rug Wash
Soft water 40L 4ml 160ml
Hard water 40L 10ml 400ml
Proofing
Number of Rugs Amount of Rug Proof
1 350 - 600ml
2 500 - 800ml
3 1000 - 1200ml
Visible soap suds are a good way of ensuring you’ve used
enough rug wash. Too many suds means you’ve used too much.
Some machines have longer wash cycles and will require less Cleaner
and Proofer. Generally speaking, a little bit of trial and error is
required to achieve 1st class results without wasting product.
