Food Bank Marks 25th Anniversary Food for Thought
I
t isn’t breaking news that our economy is struggling
and even more people are in need of our food.
Food shelf use in our region has increased 30%
with 32% more children receiving assistance and 18%
more senior citizens.
Thanks to your volunteer, food, and financial
contributions we have been able to meet our
increasing demand. In 2008 we rescued a record 2.9
million pounds of food or enough food for 2.4 million
meals which reached over 40,000 people in need.

As we mark our 25th Anniversary we’d like to invite
you to “Make a Difference” in the next 25 days.
Here’s what we’d like you to do:

5,823 hours of service
and saved us over
$64,000 in expense
Donate $25.00
Your gift will allow us to rescue and distribute $250
worth of food or enough food for 125 meals. From
now until April 30, 2009 your contribution will be
matched (not dollar for dollar) by the Alan Shawn
Feinstein Foundation.
Volunteer 25 hours
Your volunteer service will allow us to save over $275
in staff expense.
Engage 25 others in our work
Let others know about your region’s food bank. Share

newsletter to, or invite us to speak to your group.
We’ll make it easy for you to engage others in our

we’ve come full circle.
Our early beginnings
back in 1984 were the result of
the recession which hit especially
hard in our Iron Range communities.
Thousands of mine workers were laid
off and their families were in need
of our food assistance. Although
we only served 14 Arrowhead food
shelves at the time we provided a
critical service to families in need.
Today, we are rescuing millions of
pounds of food each year, providing a critical service to over 140 nonprofit programs, and impacting the lives of over 40,000 people in need.
We are also building capacity with the construction of our facility addition
and are preparing to rescue even more food in the years to come.
As we mark our 25th Anniversary I’d like to personally invite you to
“Make a Difference” in the next 25 days and 25 years. Your past support
is what has allowed us to accomplish our remarkable goals and your future
support is what will get us through the challenging times ahead.

have now been joined together and we are starting the
extensive interior reconfiguration of our building.

organization with the purpose
of rescuing surplus food and
grocery product for distribution
to food shelves, soup kitchens,
shelters, and other charitable
feeding programs as well as
residents in need throughout four
Minnesota counties (St. Louis,
Carlton, Lake and Cook) and
four Wisconsin counties (Ashland,
Douglas, Bayfield and Iron).
Last year 2.9 million pounds of
food and grocery product was
rescued and distributed to 140
charitable feeding programs and
nearly 40,000 in-need Northland
residents.
