OPTIMISING
PRODUCTION
PANNAR is committed to supporting farmers by providing first class products and expertise.
We strive to deliver tailored advice and service through our experienced sales team and agronomists.
SUPERIOR CROP
PROTECTION
Our practical on-farm solutions include
research in all the key disciplines that play a
role and are interconnected in progressive
crop production. By combining the latest
crop production technology and correct
cultivar placement, we aim to optimise
production for the best returns per field.
GUIDANCE
Production management guidelines
for every particular area.
Precision placement of cultivars.
Interaction between yield potential,
growth class, prolificacy, plant population
and cultivar type.
SEVEN KEYS OF CROP PRODUCTION
1. Climate and soil
The choice of crops
depends on the
nature of the soil, the climate
and precipitation which together
determine the type of plants
that may be cultivated and their
ultimate yield potential.
4. Crop rotation
Rotate for higher
and sustained yields.
Monoculture with a single crop
compromises future yields. Crop
rotation is conducive to improved
vigour and higher yields. The
benefits of crop rotation include
the alleviation of pathogen and
pest build-up in the soil and
improved soil composition
and fertility.
2. Fertilisation
Soil fertility and fertilisation are integral parts of crop
production. Fertility is determined by the nutrient status of
the soil, it can be defined as non-mineral elements supplied by the air
and water, primary nutrients (N, P & K), secondary nutrients (Ca, Mg & S)
and micronutrients. Of all the nutrients that can be applied in fertiliser
form, nitrogen fertilisation plays the most important role in realising a
crop’s potential yield.
5. Plant population
Management factors
affecting yield include,
row spacing, planting date,
planting depth and plant density.
Optimum plant population depends
on factors such as hybrid selection,
moisture stress level, soil fertility
and targeted yield. Average plant
population has shown a steady
increase over the past decade.
6. Tillage
The trend is to
reduce tillage as it
preserves soil quality and fosters
moisture retention. Economic
benefits include good yields
and yield stability, saving time,
reduced fuel consumption and
machinery wear and tear. It
reduces overall production costs.
3. Cultivar selection
Choosing the right
cultivar is one of
the most important decisions a
farmer makes every year. Yield
potential, stability and agronomic
characteristics determine cultivar
choice. A cultivar package is
recommended for good risk
diversification.
7. Agrochemicals
Seed treatments,
herbicides,
insecticides and fungicides all
protect and optimise the plant
factory for improved production
and provide a complete risk
management package. Today’s
new, more environmentallyfriendly products, complement
modern cultivars and bring out
the full yield potential.

DRYLAND EASTERN PRODUCTION REGION
PANNAR’s maize package comprises various growth classes and includes conventional, stalk borer resistant,
glyphosate herbicide tolerant and stacked gene hybrids that incorporate both genes. These hybrids are
recommended for grain and silage production, as well as maize foggage.
The high potential eastern production region,
which includes the West Rand, eastern Highveld,
KwaZulu-Natal and the cooler parts of the Eastern
Cape, is humid, potentially leading to a higher
incidence of disease.
In these production areas, it is advisable to inspect
plantings regularly for plant diseases and spray if
necessary. PANNAR’s YIELDBOOST® fungicide
spray programme is a cost-effective management
system that can increase the yield potential of
certain hybrids in these areas.
A package made up of hybrids from the various
growth classes is recommended for good risk
distribution.
NB! The management of possible insect resistance to the Bt
gene is legally binding. The planting of a refuge according to
regulations is required where any Bt hybrids are used (B, CB,
BR or CBGT). Refer to the schematic guidelines on page 28.

DRYLAND WESTERN PRODUCTION REGION
The PANNAR white maize package comprises an excellent range of medium early and medium hybrids, while
the medium range of yellow hybrids forms a formidable package. The hybrids offer outstanding performance
and stability across all western dryland production regions.
The western production region includes the
North West, the western Free State and Limpopo.
Good risk distribution in the western region is
achieved by management of the planting date and
good moisture conservation practices.
An important requirement for hybrids in this
region is high prolificacy, in order to maximise
production when optimal conditions occur, and
minimise risk under sub-optimal conditions.
NB! The management of possible insect resistance to the Bt
gene is legally binding. The planting of a refuge according to
regulations is required where any Bt hybrids are used (B, CB,

THE BEST UNDER IRRIGATION
PANNAR’s ultra early yellow hybrid package is an industry leader. PANNAR’s irrigation package comprises
conventional, stalk borer resistant, glyphosate herbicide tolerant and stacked gene hybrids. Cultivar choice is
very important, with the emphasis on stability. The package can be utilised in a single or double cropping
system, where, for example, maize follows wheat cultivation. The ultra early growth class hybrids are the
obvious choice in a wheat-maize rotation system.
The ultra early hybrids typically have a single-stem
upright growth habit, tend to be single cobbing and
have excellent standability. The foundation for a high
potential grain yield is accurate planting: spacing
plants uniformly within the row and planting at the
same depth. Uniform seedling emergence creates the
opportunity for optimal production per plant. The
ultra early hybrids are recommended at a high plant
population and it is therefore advisable to reduce
planting speed to ensure the best possible intra-row
plant spacing (six kilometres per hour is ideal).
If cultivation takes place under less intensive
management conditions, the medium growth class
hybrids may be considered for planting under irrigation.
Yield results in excess of 12 tonnes per hectare are
realistic for this type of hybrid if planted early.
NB! The management of possible insect resistance to the Bt
gene is legally binding. The planting of a refuge according to
regulations is required where any Bt hybrids (B, CB, BR or
CBGT) are used. Refer to the schematic guidelines on page 28.

WHITE HYBRID PACKAGE
The PANNAR white hybrid package displays good performance, adaptability and stability over regions for
good risk management.
Early Package:
Medium Package:
PAN 4A-111, PAN 4B-311B and PAN 4R-511R:
Dryland: An excellent choice for all the eastern production areas,
including the north eastern Free State. Excellent performance in the
mist belt areas. PAN 4B-311B was the top white hybrid in the ARC
trials for the eastern production region in 2013/14.
PAN 6Q-245, PAN 6Q-345CB, PAN 6R-665R and PAN 6R-845CBGT:
Dryland: They provide stable yields and have an ability to compensate
for varying growing conditions. They are recommended as part of the
main planting in the north eastern Free State, north western Free
State and North West production regions. Limit planting to the
period before the middle of December. Also recommended as part
of the main planting in the temperate parts of the Highveld and
KwaZulu-Natal and the mist belt of KwaZulu-Natal.
Irrigation: These hybrids are well suited to an irrigated singlecropping system.
These hybrids have good general disease tolerance, standability, grain
quality and hectolitre mass. A fungicide spray programme will benefit
this package where leaf diseases are normally anticipated.
Medium Early Package:
BG 5285, BG 5485B, BG 5685R and BG 5785BR:
Dryland: This group of BIOGENE® hybrids offers good stability and
high prolificacy. They are recommended as part of the main planting
for all the western production regions (north western Free State,
north eastern Free State and North West). Well adapted to all the
eastern production regions.
These hybrids have an attractive plant type, are agronomically
well-balanced and show good tolerance to Head and Tassel Smut and
Northern Corn Leaf Blight.
PAN 5Q-749BR:
Dryland: This hybrid is distinguished by its stability in the North
West. BG 5685R and PAN 5R-591R are suitable as a refuge for the
BR hybrids.
It exhibits very good standability and high prolificacy and usually
produces very few tillers.
PAN 5A-291, PAN 5R-591R and PAN 5R-791BR (NEW):
Dryland: This group of hybrids is highly prolific and complements
the BG 5285 package well. Well adapted to the sandy soils of the
northern Free State. Recommended as part of the main package.
These hybrids dry down relatively quickly and boast good standability
and high prolificacy. They have good tolerance to Diplodia Ear Rot
and Grey Leaf Spot.
PAN 6B-465B and PAN 6Q-865BR (NEW):
New hybrids with the MON89034 stalk borer resistance trait.
Dryland: These are exciting new white hybrids. PAN 6B-465B is
similar to PAN 6Q-445B and PAN 6Q-345CB, while PAN 6Q-865BR
is similar to PAN 6R-845CBGT. They are particularly suited to dryland
production and are well adapted to all maize production areas. Late
plantings in the cooler eastern parts should be avoided.
The genetic background of these hybrids provides good tolerance
to Diplodia Ear Rot, Grey Leaf Spot (GLS) and Cob and Tassel Smut.
They exhibit good standability.
Green Mealie:
SC 701: With its big, tasty kernels, large cob and exceptional shelf
life, SC 701 is undoubtedly the current leader in the green and
roasting mealie industry in South Africa. It is also suitable for the
production of baby corn. As it falls in the medium late growth class,
SC 701 dries down slowly. It is also an excellent silage cultivar.
SC 701, which has good tolerance to Maize Streak Virus, is
recommended at a population between 25 000 and 35 000 plants per
hectare. A population of 25 000 plants per hectare in the high season,
when green mealies are readily available, will ensure the bigger
marketable cobs preferred by street vendors (hawkers). Farmers are
advised to take preventative measures against Grey Leaf Spot.

YELLOW HYBRID PACKAGE
This formidable yellow maize package of ultra early, early and medium hybrids offers a good long-term
risk distribution strategy. The YIELDBOOST® fungicide spray programme provides effective control
of leaf diseases and is recommended for a selected range of hybrids. With conventional hybrids, the
YIELDBOOST® stalk borer spray programme offers effective stalk borer control with quick and lasting
action. More information is provided on page 24.
PAN 3D-736BR:
Irrigation: This versatile stacked gene hybrid is a solid performer,
harnessing the benefits of stalk borer resistance and glyphosate
herbicide tolerance. It is an excellent hybrid under irrigation,
especially in the warm areas.
Good tolerance against Cob and Tassel Smut.
PAN 3P-502R:
Irrigation: This hybrid with glyphosate herbicide tolerance produced
good results in the ARC multi-season irrigation trials. It is well adapted
to all production regions and is a good choice where high weed
pressure is a concern, as well as for a refuge for PAN 3D-736BR and
PAN 3Q-740BR.
Dryland: It is well adapted to KwaZulu-Natal and parts of the north
eastern Free State. The recommended plant population is at least
20-30% higher than that for typical medium growers under dryland
conditions.
Ultra Early Package:
PAN 6126:
Irrigation: This hybrid is a top performer, especially in the warm
irrigation regions. PAN 6126 is renowned for its good yield
performance and stability. When good stalk borer control is achieved,
it competes favourably with the Bt and BR hybrids.
The YIELDBOOST® fungicide spray programme is recommended for
all the ultra early hybrids in the areas where leaf diseases are usually
expected. It is a cost-effective risk management tool that can increase
the yield potential.
PAN 3Q-240:
Irrigation: This conventional hybrid is a good teammate for
PAN 6126. It performs very well and is adapted to all
production regions.
When good stalk borer control is achieved, it competes favourably
with the Bt and BR hybrids. Regular inspection of crops for stalk borer
infestation is essential.
BG 3292, BG 3492B, BG 3592R and BG 3792BR:
Irrigation: This complete range of hybrids has performed very well
under commercial conditions and in PANNAR’s multi-season
irrigation trials over the past three years. They display good stability
and are recommended for all production areas.
Dryland: This group of hybrids is well adapted to the eastern
Highveld and KwaZulu-Natal. They are recommended as part of the
main planting for all the eastern production areas. BG 3492B has
performed particularly well under irrigation and dryland. The
recommended plant population is at least 20-30% higher than that
for typical medium growth class hybrids under dryland conditions.
These hybrids usually produce very few tillers and have very good
standability and grain quality. They are agronomically well-balanced
and show good tolerance to Rust and Diplodia Ear Rot. Where the
ultra early hybrids are grown in the eastern Highveld and KwaZuluNatal where leaf diseases are normally anticipated, the
YIELDBOOST® fungicide spray programme can increase the yield
potential substantially.
This hybrid usually produces very few tillers and has very good
standability. It produces good quality grain. The YIELDBOOST®
fungicide spray programme is recommended for optimal production
in areas where leaf diseases are normally anticipated.
PAN 3Q-740BR:
Irrigation: This stacked gene hybrid has been a top performer under
irrigation in all production regions. It has shown excellent
performance in the ARC irrigation trials.
It displays good standability and produces good grain quality.
Early Package:
PAN 4P-228:
Dryland: This early package performs well in the cool production
regions such as the eastern Free State. The recommended plant
population is at least 20% higher than that for typical medium
growers under dryland conditions.
This hybrid usually produces very few tillers and exhibits good
standability. If Diplodia Ear Rot is a risk, this hybrid should be avoided.
The YIELDBOOST® fungicide spray programme is recommended for
optimal production where leaf diseases are anticipated.
PAN 4R-576R and PAN 4R-776BR:
Dryland: Both hybrids are recommended as part of the main planting
in the north eastern and eastern Free State. They are able to realise
good yields at lower plant populations.
They are prolific and quick drying. Good tolerance to cob rots. The
YIELDBOOST® fungicide spray programme is recommended for
optimal production where leaf diseases are usually expected.
PAN 4B-376B (NEW):
A new hybrid with the MON89034 stalk
borer resistance trait.
Dryland: This yellow hybrid is similar to PAN 4R-576R and
PAN 4R-776BR. It is a dryland hybrid that is well adapted to the
cool production areas of KwaZulu-Natal and the north eastern and
eastern Free State.
It exhibits good resistance to Phaeosphaeria Leaf Spot. It has good
standability and does not show sensitivity to sulfonylurea. It is,
however, susceptible to Northern Corn Leaf Blight (NCLB). The
YIELDBOOST® fungicide spray programme is advised in areas
where leaf diseases are usually expected.

COMPLETE CROP PROTECTION
PANNAR is committed to supporting farmers by providing first-class products and expertise. We strive to
deliver tailored advice and service through our team of experienced sales representatives and agronomists.
PANNAR’s combination of exceptional products and innovative seed care and post-planting crop care
offers a complete risk management package for crop producers.
PANACEA®
YIELDBOOST® Stalk borer spray programme:
The trademark PANACEA® represents PANNAR’s complete plant
health initiative. It includes the advice and seed treatment
products that add value to our seed.
The YIELDBOOST® stalk borer spray programme is a PANNAR
initiative to increase the productivity of selected maize hybrids. The
spray programme provides excellent stalk borer control in maize with
quick knockdown and residual action. It controls all stages in the stalk
borer life cycle.
The initiative involves a complete risk management package for crop
farmers and our seed-producing partners:
• First-class advice on diseases and pests that occur on farmers’
crops from time-to-time.
• Advice on possible control measures against such threats.
• Identification and evaluation of the best seed treatments that
complement cultivars of the various crop seeds and add value to
the company’s seed products.
• For your convenience, some standard seed treatments are applied in
PANNAR’s seed conditioning plants – the farmer receives seed that
is ready to plant.
• PANNAR evaluates new fungicides and insecticides from various
respected agrochemical companies on an annual basis, in order to
advise its seed production partners and commercial farmers.
• Spray programmes are developed and established for PANNAR to
identify the most economically efficient combinations and advise
farmers during decision-making processes. This provides farmers
with a complete cost-effective risk management package in order
to increase the profitability of their farming operations.
YIELDBOOST®
The YIELDBOOST® Fungicide and insecticide spray programmes
are the fruit of the PANACEA® initiative that enables the farmer
to benefit from the value of PANNAR SEED’s research in this
discipline first-hand, under commercial planting conditions for
selected maize hybrids.
YIELDBOOST® Fungicide spray programme:
All PANNAR’s hybrids are tested every season in various
environments for their fungicide response. A series of unique
fungicide spray programmes have been developed from the findings.
Although the primary aim of fungicide application is to control
disease to foster a better yield, an additional advantage is that plants
usually remain green and healthy for a longer period of time, which is
advantageous for standability and the grain quality of the harvest.
Results indicate that there are significant differences between hybrid
responses to various spray programmes. The risk profiles of certain
hybrids indicate that some may need two or even three sprays,
depending on the seasonal conditions, whereas others may require
only one spray or even no spraying at all.
The YIELDBOOST® fungicide programme highlights the fact that
fungicide applications should be a cost-effective management tool
in maize production and should support responsible rather than
indiscriminate spraying. The most significant improvements in
production efficiency are discernible among the ultra early and
early maize hybrids.
The YIELDBOOST® insecticide strategy focuses on the non-Bt
hybrids. The proactive stalk borer spray programme maximises the
yield potential of specific top-performing maize hybrids.
The stalk borer spray programme specifically targets the Lepidoptera
family. After ingestion of the products, larvae stop feeding almost
immediately and subsequently die. These insecticide products have
egg sterilising properties and control larvae. Consequently, they are
active on the entire life cycle of the stalk borer. They are
environmentally friendly and safe for other insects. They also
reduce the chance of red spider mite outbreaks.
The products are registered for application by centre pivot, tractor
and highboy sprayer. Under normal conditions they should provide
control for 14 days. Best practice is to monitor moth populations and
spray preventatively when moth flights peak or at the first signs of
damage (holes in plants), or alternatively if 10% egg infestation is
observed in the leaf sheath.
More information regarding our YIELDBOOST® fungicide and
insecticide spray programmes is available from your PANNAR
representative or agronomist or the PANNAR website .

SEED TREATMENT
Top quality chemical products and film coatings (polymers) are
used as seed treatments. The products currently applied to the
seed as seed treatments in the PANNAR seed conditioning plants
consist mainly of fungicides, insecticides or a combination of both.
These products offer the following advantages:
• They protect the seed and seedling at the most vulnerable maturity
stages and protect the most exposed plant parts, and also contribute
to seedling vigour.
• Top quality chemical products in combination with the correct
polymers and dyes are the most environmentally friendly way of
protecting the seed against early-season insect infestation and
seed-borne or soil-borne disease.
• Seed treatment is particularly important where seed is planted in
cold, wet conditions which delay emergence.
Maize seed fungicide treatment is standard practice in PANNAR’s
seed conditioning plants. In most cases, seed is treated with an
insecticide as well.
Fungicides:
Broad spectrum fungicides are used to protect the seed and seedlings
against disease in the early stages of the plant’s development. Seeds
and seedlings are incredibly vulnerable at these early stages and
require extra attention and protection. It is therefore necessary to
apply fungicides to the seed.
The effect of fungicides is threefold:
• They keep in check the fungi and disease residing on the surface
of the seed.
• They control soil-borne fungi and fungi inside the seed.
that serves as a biological barrier that protects the roots against early
attacks of soil insects and nematodes.
PONCHO®VOTiVO™ is a systemic insecticide and biological seed
treatment for use on maize for the control of soil insects, e.g. black
maize beetles (Heteronychus arator), astylus larvae (Astylus
atromaculatus), ground weevils (Protostrophus spp.), wireworms
(Elateridae), small false wireworms/dusty surface beetles
(Gonocephalum and Mesomorphus spp.), great false wireworms
(Somaticus spp.) and leafhoppers (Cicadulina mbila), as well as the
bio-stimulation of plants, improved growth and reduced early attacks
by nematodes.
PONCHO®VOTiVO™ contains a bacterium (Bacillus firmus) that is
applied on the seed. When the seed is planted and the environmental
conditions are favourable for germination, the bacteria start growing
and multiplying. These bacteria feed on root secretions and multiply
as the roots develop. It forms a biological barrier and protects the
roots during the critical stages of plant establishment against damage
by nematodes. The bacteria compete with nematodes for space and
food sources.
Polymers and Dyes (film coatings):
The function of polymers and dyes stretches far beyond being a
colourant for the seed. At PANNAR, safety is of the utmost
importance, not only for our employees, but also our customers and
especially the environment.
Polymers and dyes have the following characteristics and benefits:
• The dye gives the seed an attractive appearance. It indicates that the
seed is chemically treated and thus cannot be used for human
consumption or animal feed.
• It serves as an adhesive for the other important seed treatment
products that are applied to the seed.
• They give the seedling a good springboard to success.
• It limits the amount of “chemical dust” that comes off the seed
during handling.
Insecticides:
• The seed is safer for the handler and limits pollution by the
“chemical dust” that can be detrimental to the environment.
Insecticides are used to control insects that normally feed on the seed
or seedling. PANNAR offers different insecticide combinations on
various crops (e.g. PONCHO®, CRUISER® and GAUCHO® 600FS).
PONCHO® provides effective systemic protection to maize against
the major soil insects which can cause plant population losses.
At a concentration of 1.4 ml/1 000 seeds, it is effective against the
leafhopper that spreads Maize Streak Virus. The seed treatment
by PANNAR ensures even and reliable treatment.
PONCHO VOTiVO is a combination of PONCHO , a systemic
insecticide, with a biological component, VOTiVO™ (Bacillus firmus)
®

®
• It ensures a smooth finish on the seed, improving seed flow and
plantability of the seed.
• It improves the flow of seed through the planter for an accurate
plant stand. An optimal plant population is fundamental to and
synonymous with good production.
The Peridiam polymer from Bayer CropScience is used by PANNAR
as a seed treatment protective layer on maize seed.

MAIZE
MANAGEMENT OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED MAIZE HYBRIDS
The use of genetically modified hybrids has made a significant impact on the management requirements
and yield of maize. Glyphosate tolerance simplifies weed control and the Bt stalk borer resistance gene
reduces the impact of stalk borer damage. Both of these features minimise the potential yield loss of
the crop.
PANNAR’s superior genetics are available in stalk borer resistant,
glyphosate tolerant or stacked gene form, where both traits are
combined in one hybrid. Grain producers may only cultivate
hybrids containing any of the Genetically Modified (GM) traits if
he/she has signed a valid Technology and Product Stewardship
Agreement, thereby accepting the strict conditions and
responsibilities regarding the planting and cultivation of the seed.
Farmers are required to acquaint themselves with the GMO user
guidelines and adhere to the requirements regarding the planting
of suitable refuge areas in the case of Bt hybrids and the prescribed
herbicide dosage and time of application for glyphosate tolerant
hybrids. If there is any risk of cross-pollination from GM-maize to
non-GM-maize cultivated for non-transgenic contracts, please
take the necessary isolation precautions to minimise it.
GLYPHOSATE TOLERANT HYBRIDS
Hybrids with glyphosate tolerance offer effective crop
management with unsurpassed broad-spectrum weed control and
excellent crop protection. Use of this technology simplifies
management considerably, has no residual effect in the soil and is
environmentally friendly. It is essential to use a glyphosate
tolerant hybrid as refuge for the stacked gene hybrids.
PANNAR markets maize hybrids with the glyphosate tolerance gene
under licence from Monsanto (ROUNDUP READY® maize) and from
Syngenta (AGRISURE® GT (GA21)). Only Roundup PowerMAX®
(L7769) herbicide is recommended by the registration holder for
post-emergence use on ROUNDUP READY® maize. For maize hybrids
with the Syngenta AGRISURE® GT gene, only TOUCHDOWN Forte
HITECH® (L7305) or HALEX® (L8415) is recommended by the
registration holder for post-emergence use.
Glyphosate herbicide may be applied in combination with certain
residual pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicides,
independently or as tank mixtures. This provides additional flexibility
and better weed control. Please consult your PANNAR or chemical
representative for guidelines for the safe and optimal use of the
glyphosate tolerant cultivars.
Management Guidelines:
• Broadcast (over the top) glyphosate herbicide application should
only take place from the GROUND CRACKING STAGE UP TO THE
V8 STAGE of the maize plant. The V8 stage is reached when the first
plants in the field have eight leaves, with closed collars around the
main stem. The actual number of visible leaves may be more. Do not
make broadcast applications if mechanical crop damage will occur
due to the passage of the spray rig.
• BROADCAST APPLICATION AFTER THE V8 STAGE MAY RESULT
IN YIELD LOSS OR DELAYED MATURITY. For best results, use flat
fan or twin jet nozzles that are suitable for low water volume
deliveries.
• Where sequential applications are necessary to control specific weed species (e.g. Cyperus esculentus), the second application
should not occur within 10 days of the first application. If by this
time the maize is beyond the V8 stage, a post directed application
(see below) will be necessary.
• Directed glyphosate applications between the rows can be made
after the V8 stage where row spacing permits the passage of the
application equipment, without causing mechanical damage to the
maize crop.
Importance of managing herbicide tolerant crops and weed
resistance to herbicides
Proper management of herbicide tolerant crop technology is
important to preserve the effectiveness and value of the tolerant crop
seed and its corresponding herbicides for future use. Growers who
utilise herbicide programmes that include herbicide tolerant crops
can do so on an annual basis provided the technology is effectively
managed. More information regarding the stewardship of glyphosate
herbicide use and possible weed resistance is available on the
PANNAR website, or if you have any questions, please contact your
PANNAR sales representative or agronomist.

STALK BORER RESISTANT HYBRIDS
The stalk borer resistance gene in the PANNAR stalk borer
resistant hybrids offers protection against first and second instar
stalk borers and affords the crop the opportunity to develop to
its full potential. The Bt gene will only control small, immature
larvae and not adult larvae.
Insect Resistance Management Strategy:
The purpose of the strategy is the protection of the technology,
extending its shelf life and ensuring its long-term usability. The
insect resistance management strategy comprises the following
elements and is legally binding:
• Knowledge of pest biology and ecology.
• Refugia to support the development of Bt susceptible insects.
In addition to planting a refuge according to Option A or B, the
grower must also adhere to certain important requirements when
planting the refuge.
Refuge:
• The non-Bt maize (i.e. refuge) must –
– have a similar maturity to the Bt maize;
– be planted within seven days of planting the Bt maize;
– be planted on the same farm as the Bt maize; and be planted
under the same cultivation techniques and growing conditions as
the Bt maize. Thus, if the Bt maize is planted under irrigation, the
refuge maize must also be planted under irrigation. That being
said, bear in mind that less water may be distributed at the outer
edge of an irrigated field than in the centre.
• Monitoring and reporting of incidents of insect resistance
development.
• Every farmer must plant his/her own maize refuge. In other words,
neighbouring farmers’ non-Bt maize lands may not serve as refuge.
• Implementation of integrated pest management practices.
• Refuge “strip” areas must be at least six rows wide with no
crossover of Bt and non-Bt rows. Refuge areas must be positioned in
such a manner that some refuge is planted on the outside borders of
the Bt maize.
• Communication and education.
The refuge area is a legal requirement and an integral component of
Bt maize (B, CB, BR and CBGT) production. It must be planted in
strict accordance with the applicable laws and rules. Please take the
necessary precautions to protect the Bt technology. The refuge is also
important if farmers encounter problems of any sort with Bt
plantings. Continuous monitoring of maize plantings and stalk borer
populations is important. Regular inspection will enable farmers to
intervene and apply insecticides, if it appears that the stalk borer
population is not being controlled by the Bt technology. Please
consult your PANNAR representative for guidelines for the safe and
optimal use of the Bt technology. The farmer can select one of the
following options to plant a refuge:
Option A: 5% non-Bt maize refuge that may not be treated with
an insecticide.
• Mixing of Bt maize seed and non-Bt maize (refuge) seed is not
permissible.
• Refuge maize must be planted in such a manner that no Bt plant is
more than 400 m away from a refuge maize plant.
• Farmers must regularly monitor and inspect their Bt crop (weekly)
and immediately contact their seed representative or agent if stalk
borer infestation exceeds the threshold values in the Bt maize. In the
case of Monsanto, the threshold is 10% or more plants damaged.
In the case of Syngenta, it is 5% or more plants.
Compliance with the insect resistance management strategy
and particularly with the refuge requirements will be monitored
as follows:
In practice, this means that for every 95 hectares of stalk borer
resistant maize, the farmer must plant five hectares of non-Bt maize
(i.e. maize without any Bt genes). This non-Bt maize may not be
treated with any insecticide registered for control of maize
stalk borers.
• On-farm compliance monitoring by an independent third
party; and
Option B: 20% non-Bt maize refuge that may be sprayed with a
non-Bt protein-containing insecticide/biopesticide.
The representative is required to advise the farmer to ensure on-farm
compliance with the refuge planting provisions. It is of the utmost
importance that the necessary technology stewardship requirements
are observed. In instances where farmers do not comply with these
requirements, it will be viewed in a very serious light.
In practice, this means that for every 80 hectares of stalk borer
resistant maize, the farmer must plant 20 hectares of non-Bt maize
(i.e. maize without any Bt genes). This non-Bt maize can be treated
with registered insecticides, but not with insecticides that contain
Bt proteins.
• General compliance monitoring at individual seed company level
during farmer visits.
Detailed guidelines for Bt maize production are available from the
PANNAR representative.

The PANNAR Sprout mobile app is essentially a simplified, yet informative version of our website stored on a user’s mobile device,
thus eliminating the need for a continuous internet connection. When a stable connection becomes available, and providing the
user’s cellphone setting allows, the app will automatically check for and download updates. As with any mobile app, users can
control automatic updates via their device settings (for example specifying that automatic updates only happen when the device
connects to Wi-Fi and not 3G, to save on data expenses).
APP FEATURES:
Our popular farming tools are also available on the mobile app:
Users can enjoy detailed information on our full range
of products and stay abreast of new cultivars as they
become available.
• Estimated yield calculators
Farmers who come across diseases whilst in the field are able to
verify the disease against our helpful disease fact sheets. This
includes photographs, symptoms and important notes. Our
disease fact sheets are also updated as new information comes
to light, so that farmers continue to stay abreast of new and
emerging crop diseases.
Farmers can now enjoy these calculators from the comfort of
their lounge or even in the field. Keep watching this space, as
new digital tools are always in the pipeline.

SUNFLOWER
PROVEN PERFORMANCE, STABILITY AND
ADAPTABILITY FOR RESULTS IN YOUR POCKET
PANNAR maintains an outstanding performance record in the ARC national trials. For the past two years,
PANNAR has delivered four out of the top five sunflower hybrids in the ARC national trials.
Medium Late Growth Class
Clearfield® Production System
PANNAR’s range of hybrids with the CLEARFIELD® trait competes
head to head with the conventional hybrids, setting a totally new
precedent for crop rotation. The CLEARFIELD® production system
provides a cost-effective alternative. The EURO-LIGHTNING®
herbicide (L8436, with active ingredients Imazapyr and Imazamox)
provides effective post-emergence control of a variety of broadleaf
weeds and grasses.
The inherent herbicide resistance is a natural mutation; the hybrids
are not genetically modified and all sunflower hybrids are GMO-free.
PAN 7095CL – High yield potential with the CLEARFIELD® trait
• This hybrid has a yield potential similar to the conventional hybrids
on the market.
• The first hybrid with the CLEARFIELD® trait to compete head to
head with the conventional hybrids. It was the top performer in the
2012 ARC national trials. Since then, it has maintained an excellent
record of performance.
The PANNAR sunflower hybrid package performs well in all of the
different sunflower production regions of South Africa. This diverse
hybrid package provides good, stable performance with good risk
management that can help expand your business. The South African
farmer can plant PANNAR’s sunflower range with peace of mind,
with the knowledge that these hybrids incorporate the best
technology on the market.
The conventional sunflower package performs exceptionally well, is
stable and adaptable and all products have excellent Common Rust
tolerance. In addition to these hybrids, PANNAR now also markets
high-yielding CLEARFIELD® hybrids, including the first CLEARFIELD®PLUS hybrid. The CLEARFIELD®-PLUS gene is an improvement on
CLEARFIELD®. The PANNAR package also features a hybrid high in
oleic acid, with high mono-unsaturated fatty acid content. High oleic
sunflower oil is addressing the trend for healthier deep-frying oils.
A hybrid package consisting of single and three-way crosses is
recommended as a strategy to better manage disease and drought
stress. It is also recommended that farmers stagger the planting dates
for better risk management.
PAN 7102CLP – A CLEARFIELD®-PLUS hybrid for even
better weed control
• This hybrid contains the ‘new’ CLEARFIELD® gene, CLEARFIELD®PLUS, with the benefit of improved weed control.

SOYBEANS
SOYBEANS, A WIDE CHOICE OF TOP PERFORMERS
The PANNAR SEED soybean breeding programme started in 1977 and is currently the market-leading
programme in South Africa.
Glyphosate Tolerant* Cultivars
Early Maturity Class: Cool regions and later planting
in temperate regions
PAN 1454R – First across the finish line
• A quick-maturing cultivar for regions with a restricted
growing season.
• Robust cultivar ideally suited to the cooler eastern Highveld.
• First choice for wheat-soybean rotation.
• High oil content.
• Not recommended for the warm production regions.
PAN 1532R – Widely adapted to cool and temperate regions (NEW)
• Very good, stable performance across all production areas.
• An excellent irrigated cultivar.
PANNAR has access to the best commercial soybean cultivars and
pre-commercial lines from across the world, as well as lines bred
locally. PANNAR’s policy is to release the best varieties possible
into the South African market, regardless of where they originate.
• Upright plant type, well adapted to high plant populations and
narrow inter-row spacing.
• Very good standability and harvests easily.
For the past five years, PANNAR’s cultivars have held the top
performance position in and across all regions. The question is, does
history predict the future? There is no simple answer: The table below
shows 18 years of national cultivar trial testing history, including the
best rank achieved by a PANNAR variety. It includes all the important
players in the cultivar market and it is considered a reasonably
unbiased indication of relative strength of a programme. This history
does not predict the future, but it documents our sustained
commitment to a market that has always shown promise. It
demonstrates a consistently good performance over an extended
period, despite increasingly unpredictable weather patterns. If you
have planted these top ranked varieties over the years, you will have
experienced the incremental genetic gain.
Medium Maturity Class: Temperate regions and later
planting in warm regions (Irrigation)
No, history does not predict future gains, but it confirms that the
infrastructure within PANNAR is in place to replace good with better
and better with awesome.
• Best yield stability in the cultivar range.
• Widely adapted.
• Exciting cultivar that has replaced PAN 1583R.
• Indeterminate, but compact plant type well suited to narrow-row
cultivation.
• Has excellent tolerance to lodging, even at higher plant populations.
• Excellent choice in all the production regions, first choice where
plant population is maximised in order to gain high yields.
PAN 1664R – Top performer in ARC national trials!
• The best overall performer in the cool, temperate and warm
production regions.
• Exceptional yield stability and wide area adaptability. PANNAR’s
most popular cultivar.
• Attractive plant type that dries down uniformly.
• A versatile cultivar that is agronomically well balanced.
PAN 1500R – Compact and good standability PANNAR’s versatile package of various maturity class cultivars offers
the optimal cultivar for every planting date in all production areas.
PANNAR is currently phasing in a new range of soybean cultivars,
which significantly out-perform the current commercial offering. This
is exciting news for farmers who are out to improve their soybean
farming profitability by increasing yields.
The three most important aspects of successful soybean production
are: plant population, planting date and the growth class of suitable
cultivars for each production region. Soybean cultivars are classified
into 12 growth classes (growth class 00, very early, to growth class 9,
late). Cultivars in growth classes 5 and 6 are generally the best suited

DRY BEANS
THE BEST DRY BEANS
The dry bean industry in South Africa is vulnerable to influences on many fronts. There are few players
in the market (seed and grain), which means that individual elements within the market could have
potentially large impacts.
Two breeding programmes contribute to the vast majority of the
cultivars released. A relatively small number of farmers contribute
to the grain deliveries, while a small number of traders influence
local grain prices and China dictates the quality and price of
imported dry beans.
This said, it is a good business to be in. Dry bean farmers are
specialists and it will remain this way for years to come, even if
mechanisation of harvesting reduces the risk factor. PANNAR has
been at the forefront of the drive to mechanise dry bean production
and has been focusing on the transfer of technology to assist farmers
in mechanising their harvesting process. Progress is, however, slow in
both cultivar development and improvement in cultural practices
which will facilitate mechanisation.
Grain quality is an important attribute in our selection process.
Despite the complexity of breeding for a number of additional
selection criteria, PANNAR has made important improvements.
PAN 9292 – The best in the west
• A cultivar similar to PAN 116, but with some significant
improvements.
• PAN 9292 is especially well suited to the North West production
regions. It displays good general disease resistance, wide area
adaptability and increased yield stability.
• Grain quality is good. The smaller, rounder bean reduces potential
for mechanical damage.
PAN 9216 – Red flower, indeterminate growth habit
• Good performance in national dry bean statistical trials.
• Potential for direct mechanical harvesting with a combine harvester.
• Important agronomic traits: indeterminate growth habit; excellent
standability; large seeded.
• Unique red flower makes it recognisable anywhere in the world.

A top-performing, red speckled bean package that offers exceptional
yield performance and stability. The package provides a cultivar for all
production systems, from the high input, mechanised operation to
the low input, subsistence setup.
• Excellent general disease tolerance, including Rust, Angular Leaf
Spot and BCMV resistance.
Small white canning bean
A winning combination of exceptional yield, disease tolerance and
grain quality.
PAN 148 – A proven performer

GRAIN SORGHUM
INCOMPARABLE GRAIN SORGHUM PACKAGE
PANNAR hybrids are the backbone of grain sorghum production in South Africa. PANNAR SEED’s
sorghum breeding programme has been running for more than 30 years and is one of the oldest in the world.
Locally developed hybrids are also planted in the rest of Africa, South America, Mexico and Australia.
Over the past decade, the malt market has contracted to such an
extent that a decision was taken to change the grading system of
sorghum. In the old grading system, there were three classes,
namely GM, GL and GH (class GM and GL have no tannin, while
the GH class contains tannin). The GM class only included hybrids
with high malting values, while the GL class was suitable only for
animal feed. The system has now changed and the GM and GL
classes have been combined in the GM class.
The new GM class has nothing to do with malting values, but
includes all hybrids that do not contain tannin. The GH class includes
all hybrids containing tannin. Grain South Africa is currently exploring
the export market for grain sorghum in Africa and Asia to stimulate
greater sorghum plantings locally.
The PANNAR grain sorghum package maintains an excellent record
of performance in the ARC trials, as well as the PANNAR trials.
PAN 8906 and PAN 8816 are recommended as the main planting
for all grain sorghum production regions. PAN 8906 is particularly
well suited to the milling industry as well as for ethanol production.
PAN 8816 has excellent yield stability and area adaptability. It is a
malting hybrid, also very suitable for the milling industry and for
ethanol production.
PAN 8906 – Good milling quality with excellent yield potential

WHEAT
WHEAT: A WINNING COMBINATION
PANNAR’s wheat breeding programme makes a major contribution to local wheat production.
PANNAR cultivars maintain an excellent track record in the ARC national trials. The programme focuses
on improving the yield potential of wheat production in South Africa, as well as the development of
cultivars with new sources of resistance to Russian Wheat Aphid and Rust.
The ARC Small Grains Institute’s national trials confirm the
PANNAR wheat cultivar package’s excellent yield potential
and adaptability in the various local production regions.
PANNAR’s dryland package consists of true winter, winter and
intermediate wheat cultivars. There are several breeding programme
highlights. PAN 3161 has a combination of good aluminium tolerance
and Russian Wheat Aphid resistance. PAN 3161 seedlings grow
vigorously and the cultivar is an excellent choice on fields with a wind
risk. In the intermediate growing period, PAN 3379 is a good choice
for later plantings in the western and central production areas of the
Free State. PAN 3379 demonstrates strong seedling vigour and has
excellent standability due to its shorter straw. PAN 3368 is better
suited to the central and eastern production areas of the Free State.
PANNAR is literally a “one-stop seed supplier” in the various
irrigation areas. The package boasts high potential irrigation cultivars
divided into three growing period classes: medium late, medium and
medium early. The package consists of PAN 3497, PAN 3471 and
PAN 3400. PAN 3497 performed exceptionally well in the ARC
national trials and, with its slightly longer growing period, similar to
PAN 3471, it is more suitable for early plantings. PAN 3400, with a
quick growing period and excellent yield potential, is ideal for later
plantings. The PANNAR package is the obvious choice for the
irrigation farmer.
NOTES
Wheat cultivars classified as resistant to Rust and Russian Wheat
Aphid must, as with susceptible cultivars, still be monitored for the
occurrence of these pests, since new races/biotypes which have the
ability to overcome the resistance may develop. Factors such as
disease pressure, appearance of symptoms at the seedling stage and
prevailing climatic conditions may also affect the effectiveness or
expression of resistance.

PAN 3118
Exceptionally wide area adaptability with top performance, especially in the western dryland
production regions of the Free State. This cultivar is also known for excellent performance under low
yield potential conditions.
PAN 3120
With its long growing period, this cultivar is very well adapted to early planting dates. It is an
outstanding cultivar known for excellent performance on high potential soils and can be planted as
early as 20 April in the western production areas of the Free State.
PAN 3161
Good yield potential and wide area adaptability, exceptionally strong seedling vigour, shorter
straw length providing excellent standability, Russian Wheat Aphid resistance and good aluminium
tolerance.
PAN 3195
A new addition to the long growing season class. Shorter and stronger straw providing excellent yield
potential. Under high potential conditions it can be planted early.
PAN 3368
A top performer in the eastern Free State. Resistant to two of the Russian Wheat Aphid biotypes and
particularly suitable for cultivation in the central and eastern Free State.
PAN 3379
A high potential cultivar with a shorter straw length that is resistant to two of the Russian Wheat
Aphid biotypes. The cultivar has strong seedling vigour, a short growing period and excellent
hectolitre mass. Shows moderate susceptibility to Stripe Rust.

Area Adaptability and Characteristics
PAN 3497
PAN 3471 is certainly the top performer in the medium growing period class. PAN 3471 is the top
choice for the main planting on account of its consistent and reliable performance across various
seasons, planting dates, environments and at different yield potential levels. PAN 3471 has good straw
strength and standability. Displays good resistance to Stripe and Leaf Rust pathotypes.
The medium to late grower PAN 3497 is the number one choice for early plantings. It has an excellent
yield potential at early plantings and achieves top performance in the ARC Small Grains Institute’s
trials. It has good stooling capacity, grading characteristics and tolerance to Stripe Rust. The cultivar is
susceptible to Leaf Rust.
PAN 3400
A top performer in the medium to early growing period class and a good choice for planting at
medium to late planting dates. Its shorter straw makes PAN 3400 suitable for higher seeding rates as
required by later planting dates, to compensate for the reduced stooling capacity as temperatures rise
later in the season. Irrespective of its growing period, PAN 3400 competes favourably yield-wise.
PAN 3400 is resistant to Stripe Rust and moderately susceptible to Leaf Rust.
PAN 3471
Has a high yield potential, good straw strength, standability and shows good resistance to current
Leaf Rust and Stripe Rust pathogenic types. PAN 3471 is very well suited to dryland cultivation in the
Western Cape, as supported by its performance in the ARC test results.
PAN 3408
A cultivar with a medium-late growing period with stable, consistently high yields over many seasons
in the Rüens and Swartland production areas. PAN 3408 is resistant to Stripe Rust and moderately
susceptible to Leaf and Stem Rust.

FORAGE CROPS
FORAGE CROPS
PANNAR SEED is a leader in the certified pasture seed industry and complies with the regulations for genetic
and physical quality set by the Seed Certification Scheme. PANNAR is synonymous with quality. We have
a wealth of expertise in planted pasture and a wide range of versatile cultivars to meet your unique needs.
PANNAR’s forage crops are thoroughly tested under local growing conditions for high carrying capacity and
palatability for sustainable animal production.
Key to Forage Production
No growth. Aboveground parts
of the plant discolour and die off.
A production guideline is supplied for each cultivar to indicate its expected production curve.
The production curve for each crop and cultivar depends on the planting date, management
and climate. The production curves are only guidelines of the expected forage production
period and differences between cultivars. Also keep in mind that the time indicated that the
crops grow strongly is not necessarily the best or only time to utilise them. Crops can also be
used as foggage or stored as hay.
Poor growth.
Intermediate growth.
