There are many helpful tips along the way, and it is strongly suggested that you become familiar with this entire manual prior to operating the RENA T-150. 1.2 RENA T-150 Stand Alone Tabber Description The RENA T-150 Stand Alone Tabber is a machine that is used to seal the open edges of folded mail pieces. It’s primary function is to prepare mail pieces. The RENA T-150 Stand Alone Tabber is a simple machine with distinct feed and tabbing sections. Mail pieces are loaded into the FEED HOPPER and then fed under the PEEL BAR where a tab is folded over the lead edge of the piece being fed through the tabber. Waste backing paper is taken up on the TAKE-UP SPOOL and the piece is passed from the machine by the TRANSPORT ROLLERS. The RENA T-150 Stand Alone Tabber is controlled by the POWER SWITCH (feeding and transport of the pieces) and the TAB switch (tabbing on or off). A 5-digit digital counter keeps track of the job and indicator lights allow the operator to monitor the status of the machine. 03/2003 1 RENA T-150 STAND ALONE TABBER Operating Manual RENA T-150 TABS RENA T-150 TABBER Figure 1.1 – Items Included 1.3 Items Included Double check to be sure that the following items arrived with the machine: • • • • • • 1.4 1 RENA T-150 Stand Alone Tabber 1 roll of white paper RENA T-150 tabs 1 operating manual 2 core adapters 1 power cord 1 set feed hopper extension (3 pieces) Set-Up Unscrew the two silver thumb screws that secure the TAB ROLL SUPPORT, pivot the SUPPORT clockwise until it is 2 03/2003 RENA T-150 STAND ALONE TABBER Operating Manual parallel to the floor and secure it in place with the screws in the holes provided in the side of the machine. 1.5 Operating Manual Safety Terms The following highlighted blocks are used throughout this manual to emphasize important information. COMPONENTS 4.1 Feed Section Figure 4.1 – Feed Components 1. PAPER GUIDES. Locate the mail pieces in the feed section. Adjust them left or right to position tabs correctly on piece. 2. SEPARATORS. These three components are set to allow just one piece to pass at a time. Set them by loosening the screws, lifting the SEPARATOR up and allowing it to drop atop a single piece that is to be run. Once set, snug the screw. 12 03/2003 RENA T-150 STAND ALONE TABBER Operating Manual 3. FEED HOPPER EXTENSIONS. These components attach to the PAPER GUIDES and the PAPER STOP to increase the height of the feed hopper, allowing more to be loaded at a time. 4. FEED ROLLERS. These are consumable components that grasp the pieces and move it from the stack of mail pieces into the tabbing area. The FEED ROLLERS must be kept clean (see Maintenance). When they wear down to the level of the FEED TRAY, or cease to feed when cleaned, have them replaced. 5. PAPER GUIDE LATCHES. Pivot the handle on the latch, releasing its tension, to slide the PAPER GUIDES to the correct position. 4.2 Controls & Power Entry 1. POWER CORD. Plugs into the lower input end of the machine. 2. POWER ENTRY MODULE. Receives the POWER CORD and houses the FUSES. 3. POWER SWITCH. Turns power on to the machine, starting and stopping the feed rollers. 4. TAB SWITCH. Press this button down to tab and up to stop tabbing. 5. TABBING. This green indicator light comes on whenever a tab is in the sensor beam. It turns on and off with each piece that is tabbed. It will also come on and stay on when there is enough dirt, debris of stray tabs in the sensor beam to obstruct it. 6. ERROR. The red ERROR indicator will flash most commonly when the tabber has not applied a tab in the preset time allotted for it to do so. 7. COUNTER. Keeps count of tabbed pieces. Lot count only. The red button on the counter resets it. The COUNTER is powered by a battery that will last for years. 03/2003 13 RENA T-150 STAND ALONE TABBER Operating Manual 4.3 Tab Section Figure 4.2 – Tab Section Components 1. CORE ADAPTER. A roll of tabs is mounted to the CORE ADAPTER with the loose end coming off the bottom of the roll. 2. TAB SPINDLE. This is a black bar that the CORE ADAPTER fits over, mounting the tabs to the machine. 3. TAB ROLL SUPPORT. This bar holds the TAB SPINDLE and the TABS. It must be situated in the correct position, parallel to the floor, before use. 14 03/2003 RENA T-150 STAND ALONE TABBER Operating Manual 4. TAB TENSION PLATE. This spring-loaded plate swivels up to the bottom of the roll of tabs to keep it from unwinding during operation. More or less tension can be applied to the roll of tabs by adjusting the spring tension on shaft that holds the TAB TENSION PLATE. 5. TURNING ROLLER. This is a white plastic roller that lines the tab strip up with the peel bar. 6. TENSION ROLLER. This roller rests on the TURNING ROLLER to secure the tab strip as it is unwound. 7. PEEL BAR ASSEMBLY. The tab strip passes over the PEEL BAR ASSEMBLY where tabs are stripped for application to the mail piece. The PEEL BAR ASSEMBLY can be shortened and lengthened by loosening the screws on its face and sliding the two parts of the assembly together or apart. Changing the length of the PEEL BAR ASSEMBLY changes the amount of tab wrapped on top of the piece. 8. TRACTORS. The tab strip is kept in place by the TRACTORS which are driven by a motor that turns the square shaft, advancing the tabs. 9. INNER COVER. Secured by two compression latches, the INNER COVER protects drive rollers and the SENSORS. 10. SENSORS. There is actually just one SENSOR, but it is made up of two parts, the EMITTER and the DETECTOR, thus the common term “SENSORS.” The SENSOR performs double duty. It detects the lead edge of the tab and the trail edge of the piece. The area between the two parts of the SENSOR must be kept clean and dust free. 11. TAKE-UP SPOOL. Waste backing paper is wrapped around the TAKE-UP SPOOL. 12. CLIP. The white plastic clip secures the waste to the TAKE-UP SPOOL. It is easily misplaced, so it is a good idea to have a few on hand. 03/2003 15 RENA T-150 STAND ALONE TABBER Operating Manual 5. SET-UP & OPERATION 5.1 Preparing Tabs 1. Mount the two CORE ADAPTERS in a roll of tabs. 2. Peel about 12 tabs from the beginning of the strip. RENA T-150 TABS Figure 5.1 – Tab Preparation 5.2 Threading Tabs 1. Open the TRACTORS and lay the backing paper on to the pins of each tractor. Leave extra backing paper to reach the TAKE-UP SPOOL, but do not pull enough to peel tabs into the machine. Close the TRACTORS over the tab strip. 7. Remove the CLIP from the TAKE-UP SPOOL and pass the tab strip under the spool, attaching it to the spool with the clip. 03/2003 17 RENA T-150 STAND ALONE TABBER Operating Manual RENA T-150 TABS Figure 5.3 – Completed Threading 18 03/2003 RENA T-150 STAND ALONE TABBER Operating Manual 5.3 Loading Mail Pieces Figure 5.4 – Loading Mail Pieces 1. Slide the PAPER GUIDES out to the edge of the FEEDER. 2. Select and mark if necessary where the tab needs to be placed on the piece. 3. Line the tab location up with the tabs in the TRACTOR by sighting from the input end of the machine. 4. Loosen but do not remove the knobs that secure the SEPARATORS and lift them off the FEED ROLLS. Gently tighten the knobs to hold the SEPARATORS up. Lay the marked sample piece under the SEPARATORS and allow the SEPARATORS to drop to the top of the piece. Secure the SEPARATORS by tightening the knobs. Do not over tighten. 03/2003 19 RENA T-150 STAND ALONE TABBER Operating Manual 5. Slide the PAPER GUIDES to the sides of the piece, square them up and tighten them down. Leave a little room between the piece and the guides. 6. Be sure that the TAB SWITCH is up – no tabbing , load a hand full of pieces and turn on the power. Pieces should feed regularly and smoothly through the machine. If they don’t, re-adjust the FEEDER components. 5.4 Tabbing Mail Pieces 1. Turn POWER OFF. 2. Turn tabbing ON by pushing the TAB button. Empty the FEEDER and POWER ON. The tab strip should advance to peel the first tab and the green TAB READY light should come on. If the ERROR light flashes, turn the POWER OFF and ON until the tabs advance to the peel point. Once a tab is ready to apply, turn the POWER OFF again. 3. Load the pieces in the FEEDER and turn the POWER on. Pieces will feed and tabs will apply. 5.5 Loading Another Roll of Tabs 1. Either allow the full roll of tabs to run through the tabber and thread per instructions above, or splice per the following. (Refer to Figure 5.5). Splicing is faster. 2. Just before the TAB SPOOL runs totally empty, empty the feeder and turn the POWER OFF. 3. Remove the empty tab core from the TAB SPINDLE and take out the CORE ADAPTERS. 4. Place the CORE ADAPTERS in the new tab core. 5. Peel a tab and stick it to the back of the new tab strip at the lead edge with about half of the tab overhanging. Lay the new strip over the old, and attach one to the other with the tab. Use the tractor holes to line up the tabs precisely. 20 03/2003 RENA T-150 STAND ALONE TABBER Operating Manual 6. Roll up the tabs and mount the new roll to the TAB SPINDLE. 7. Load the FEEDER and turn the POWER ON to resume tabbing. OLD TAB ROLL NEW TAB ROLL Figure 5.5 – Splicing Tabs 5.6 Clearing the Take-Up Spool 1. When the TAKE-UP SPOOL becomes full, back it off a bit to generate some slack and tear the backer above the TAKE-UP SPOOL. 2. Slide the waste from the spool, unwind it to recover the CLIP and discard the waste. 3. Re-attach the waste to the TAKE-UP SPOOL with the CLIP. 03/2003 21 RENA T-150 STAND ALONE TABBER Operating Manual 6. MAINTENANCE The main cause of trouble with the RENA T-150 Stand Alone Tabber is irregular feeding of mail pieces. The machine requires a space between the pieces of about an inch. If that space doesn’t exist, tabs will be applied incorrectly, and incorrectly applied tabs find their way into any number of places. What’s more, since it is the tab that ends up where it isn’t supposed to be, the trouble is diagnosed as a tabbing difficulty which isn’t the case at all. So, paying attention to the feeder pays big dividends in correct and continuous operation. Tabs also can cause problems as can the tabbing mechanisms and sensors. Most trouble results from accumulations of dirt and debris in the machine. Frequently remove surface dust or debris from the T-150 using RENA Canned Air or RENACare for rubber rollers. 6.1 Feed Section 1. Clean the FEED ROLLERS periodically with alcohol or roller cleaner. 2. Clean the BUMPER ROLLERS in the same manner. 3. Remove the separators from the machine and rotate them to bring a clean spot in contact with the mail pieces about once per year. 4. Keep surfaces clean and dust-free. 6.2 Tabs 1. Take a look at the backing paper of tabs that you’re running. The diecuts around the tabs must not break the release layer of the backer. Test this by coloring the release layer with a magic marker. It you can see circles of ink on the backing paper, the die cuts are too deep. Any tabs with deep die cuts are suspect. They may run, but they are almost as likely to fail. 2. The tractor holes must be consistent and in line from side to side as well as along the strip. 22 03/2003 RENA T-150 STAND ALONE TABBER Operating Manual 3. Tabs must be centered between the tractors. When tabs are off center, they are not detected accurately and do not apply correctly. 4. Store tabs at room temperature for less than a year. It is best to continually buy fresh tabs than to stockpile a large number of tabs for a long time. Buy tabs that are date stamped so that you can keep track. 6.3 Tab Section 1. Clean the PAPER PATH regularly. This includes removing debris and the like from the sweep. 2. Clean sensors. The easiest way to clean the sensors is to blow them off with canned air. 03/2003 23 RENA T-150 STAND ALONE TABBER Operating Manual 7. TROUBLESHOOTING The following table is organized by symptom, faults and cures. Often more than one fault can cause a particular symptom. Rarely is a fault fixed by more than one cure. 7.1 Troubleshooting Chart TROUBLE CAUSE SOLUTION 1. Nothing works. • • Power switch is not on. Power cord is damaged or not plugged into proper outlet.
