Ian Clare Zac Athfield : Athfield Architects : Community and at Awaroa Ath had the brilliant idea that you could build walls 1.8m high without consent, and to build a network of these, within which people could erect their own ‘inhabita8ons’. His prototype walls were built from sand filled yellow plas8c fer8lizer bags, which would decay. To accelerate this he splashed them with petrol and set them alight, with brilliant consequences. Zac worked with Ath on these ideas for ‘inclusive’ development at Awaroa, as an alterna8ve to ‘exclusive’ waterfront developments that ‘exclude’ the public. In the light of the ‘crowd funding’ rescue of the Awaroa spit of land from private investors, this will be the focus of the weekend design project -‐ or ‘esquisse’ -‐ as we like to call it ! Richard has correctly said that the spit of land should not be built on, Zac has been iden8fying other sites that could be suitable for concentrated seRlement, and we propose to get par8cipants to explore ideas for ’typologies’ of community ‘inhabita8on’.
