5 More Utility Boxes Identified for
Beautification as Part of City Program

San Clemente’s local landscape just got a bit more beautiful. With
the second Street Art contest, co-hosted by the City of San Clemente
and the San Clemente Art Association (SCAA) having concluded, public
art is now shining brightly in five more areas of town.
San Clemente is not only rich with history, but filled with talented
artists whose art is now generously sprinkled throughout San Clemente,
bringing enjoyment to motorists and pedestrians who pass by this colorful public art known as “Street Art”. The Street Art is painted on utility
boxes that contain traffic signaling equipment. These boxes have been
beautified with the artistic renderings.
The call for artists concluded on February 22, 2013 and a jury panel
comprised of artists, art professionals and community representatives
judged all 28 entries. The jury panel selected the artists and their respective art, featured on this page, which in their opinion best reflects
the quality of the community and captures the local culture in a positive
way.
Last year, five utility boxes were painted as a result of the City
launching the pilot Street Art Program. With its success, the San Clemente City Council continued the program, identifying additional utility
boxes along public streets for paintings that depict San Clemente’s culture, traditions and history.

The Coastal Animal Services Authority (C.A.S.A.), in partnership with
Estrella Veterinary Hospital and the
Pet Project Foundation, introduces a
low cost spay/neuter program for dogs
and cats. The program will be made
available to residents of San Clemente,
Dana Point and Capistrano Beach who
are Active Duty Military Personnel or
residents whose income level falls
under the program’s “low-income”
restrictions. Low income represents
a single person making no more than
$40,000 per year or no more than
$75,000 annually for a couple/family.
This new program provides people
with a potential savings of hundreds
of dollars off of the typical cost for the
procedure provided by veterinarian
hospitals. The spaying and neutering
procedures will be conducted at Estrella Veterinary Hospital in Capistrano
Beach. The animal shelter staff will
process the required paperwork and
be present at the vet hospital to check
in people and their animals for surgery.

containing Freon are picked up similar to
a bulky item. Refrigerators contain Freon
and other chemicals that require special
handling. CR&R will collect bulky items and

The use of Vacation Rental Properties
along the Southern California coast
continues to gain in popularity.
ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS
The Kenneth A. Picerne Foundation
will begin accepting Artist Outreach
Project applications on May 1, 2013.
The Foundation will award up to 20
artists $12,000 each to provide underserved groups educational, mentoring,
and/or therapeutic arts experiences of
their own design.
These art experiences are intended
to reach people of all ages who lack
opportunities to engage in meaningful arts programs. Artists will choose
a nonprofit to collaborate with and the
population they are interested in serving. Artists awarded the grant are expected to contribute an average of six
hours a week to the people they are
serving over the course of one year. Visual, literary, and performing artists, 55
years old and older, who live in Orange
County and North San Diego County are
eligible to apply. The application deadline is July 31, 2013.
Last year, San Clemente Artist Nancy Egan was selected to participate and
taught drawing and oil painting to atrisk young people age 12-18 at the Boys
& Girls Club in San Clemente. The Vintage Shores community on Camino de
Estrella in San Clemente has expressed
an interest in having an artist apply for
the program who could pursue a visual
art program with its residents. San Clemente artists are encouraged to submit
an application.

San Clemente is no exception. The City
began a program in 2010 to identify and
register properties, which offer an alternative to traditional hotels for vacationers.
Vacation rental lodging provides added choices to tourists, boosts tourism
spending, and provides income to homeowners. Today, there are over 200 registered
properties operating in San Clemente, generating in excess of $150,000 per year in
transient occupancy taxes. These additional tax receipts help pay the cost of public
safety, beach maintenance, and other costs resulting from the seasonal crowds that
visit San Clemente.

TO UNVEIL INAUGURAL
SPORTS HALL OF FAME
The “Friends of San Clemente” Beaches, Parks & Recreation Foundation, a
charitable foundation that focuses on supporting recreational programs in our community is in the final phases of planning
their Saturday, May 11th annual membership drive, duly titled a “Friend-raiser” at
the San Clemente Aquatics Center. Festivities begin at 6:00 p.m. with the unveiling at
7:00 p.m. The event goal is not only to debut the San Clemente Sports Hall of Fame,
but also to raise awareness on becoming a
“Friend”, what the Foundation has accomplished and what we have our eyes on going into the future. Those that attend will
be a year-long individual or family “Friend”
that demonstrates they are a contributor to
building and maintaining all that is “fun” in
San Clemente.
Friends of San Clemente Foundation
President, Tom Wicks said, “This year the
Friends of San Clemente are inviting every
resident and business owner in the community to join in the unveiling of the Sports Hall
of Fame wall.” The wall is prominently located at the San Clemente Aquatics Center
within the Vista Hermosa Sports Park and
is the location for this year’s Friend-raiser.
The Sports Hall of Fame presentation will
induct 9 individuals in recognition of their
outstanding contributions and dedication
to San Clemente youth sports; or serving
as a role model in the spirit of sportsmanship, athletics, and teamwork. “I am so delighted to be involved in this historical moment by announcing the first athletes to be
displayed on the Sports Hall of Fame wall”
stated City Councilman Jim Evert who led
the 9-member selection committee. “The
evening promises to be star-studded with
San Clemente’s successful sports figures
being honored,” continued Evert. Inductees
will be released to the public weekly as we
move closer to the May 11th Friend-raiser.
The $35 per person or $65 per family
admission to the Friend-raiser and Sports
Hall of Fame Presentation includes an individual or family membership for one year.
Also included is food and beverages donated by local restaurants. More information

“Operation Enduring Freedom”
San Clemente Supports Monument to Honor our Fallen Marines
The City of San Clemente is proud to
support efforts to erect the Operation Enduring Freedom Monument at the 5th Marine
Memorial Park at Camp Pendleton. At their
March 19th Council meeting, the San Clemente City Council voted to support the campaign by making a $5,000 contribution on
behalf of the City and San Clemente citizens,
so this tribute, which will serve as a place for
people to visit and pay their respects to our
fallen Marines and Sailors, can be constructed. The total cost to construct the Monument
is roughly $50,000 and nearing its goal. The
Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support
Group plans an unveiling this June. This OEF
Project will not only include the site preparation for the Monument before it is laid to rest,
but also includes refurbishing the Park to pay
proper tribute to our Fallen Fifth Marines.
The City of San Clemente is pleased to
be part of a unified front that supports our
Nation’s servicemen and women and we take
pride in showing our appreciation for their
selfless contributions and sacrifices. Officially,
the City of San Clemente has adopted the
2/4 Marines and HMLA-469.
Our Nation’s Marines and others during
the course of the Afghanistan War, “Operation Enduring Freedom” performed admirably
as they’ve accomplished their objectives.
Victory, however, has come at a very high
price since the beginning of the war in 2001.
Many brave men and women in uniform have
made the ultimate sacrifice. It is time for us
to Remember and pay Tribute to our Fallen
Comrades In Arms. All of the 5th Marine
Adoptive Cities; Laguna Hills, Dana Point,
Rancho Santa Margarita, Costa Mesa and
San Clemente, in concert with 5th MAR
Command, have supported this permanent
Operation Enduring Freedom Monument to
be located in the Regimental Memorial Park
at San Mateo.
This monument will be a 7’x8’
granite barrier-shaped monument
that when laid to rest will honor
brave Warriors who made the
ultimate sacrifice from all
distinguished Marine Units.

SAN CLEMENTE THIS SUMMER BY BUS
Four OCTA bus routes provide San
Clemente residents, workers, and visitors
with a convenient, inexpensive, low-stress,
and environmentally-friendly way to travel to
local destinations such as shopping or the
beach, or to other parts of Orange County. In
addition to local Route 193, Route 1 provides
service to Long Beach via the coastal route,
and Routes 91 and 191 provide service to
South County destinations including Laguna
Hills and Mission Viejo. Bus fares are $2.00
(75 cents for seniors 60+ or persons with disabilities). Day passes, valid for unlimited bus
rides on the day the pass is purchased, are
available for $5.00 ($1.50 for seniors age 60+
or persons with disabilities).
Route 193 was recently expanded to
better meet the needs of San Clemente. In
addition to Walmart, San Clemente Medical Center, and San Clemente High School,
Route 193 now stops at the Target store and
the Vista Hermosa Sports Park at the corner
of La Pata and Avenida Vista Hermosa.
Route 193 also stops at the San Clemente
Metrolink station at Avenida Pico and El
Camino Real, providing a convenient connection to Southern California destinations
outside the OCTA service area.
OCTA’s Youth Summer Bus Pass provides passengers up to age 18 with unlimited
travel to popular destinations such as the
beach, shopping, and amusement parks.
The pass, which costs $60, may be used on
all OCTA fixed-route buses between June
1st and August 1st, and will be available for
purchase beginning May 1st.
OCTA Fair Express Route 691 is a
convenient way for riders of all ages to get to
the Orange County Fair. Thanks to a grant
from the Southern California Mobile Source
Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee
(MSRC), fair goers will pay only $2.00 each
way. OCTA Youth Summer Bus Pass and
multi-day passes are good for travel on the
OCTA Fair Express. In addition, passengers
will receive $3 discount coupons to the fair.
Fair Express service will be available from
July 13 through August 12, between 3:00
p.m. and midnight on weekdays, and between 10:00 a.m. and midnight on Saturdays
and Sundays. Convenient parking for Fair
Express passengers will be available at the
San Juan Capistrano Park and Ride lot at the
corner of Junipero Serra Road and I-5.

Trauma Intervention Programs, INC.
(TIP) is looking for caring people willing to
be a part of a team of citizen volunteers
trained to provide emotional and practical support to the victims of traumatic
events. No experience is necessary. These
modern-day Good Samaritans will be
called to emergency scenes by emergency
response personnel to:
• Comfort families after the death or
sudden illness of a loved one
• Support family members after the suicide of a loved one
• Help emotionally traumatized victims
of accidents
• Provide emotional and practical support to those who have been robbed,
burglarized or assaulted
• Help disoriented older persons
• Help those emotionally shaken by any
crisis event
• No One Dies Alone Program
RIGHT NOW, TIP is in the process of
recruiting volunteers to work in the area.
They need citizens willing to be trained as
crisis responders in Orange County. No experience is necessary.
Here’s how TIP Volunteers helped the
San Clemente community last year:
• # of San Clemente residents who assisted (including San Clemente residents
who helped at local hospitals) = 82
• # of crisis intervention services provided to San Clemente residents (including professional follow-up) = 246
• # of volunteers serving the City of San
Clemente = 49
• # of volunteer “ready alert” hours contributed by TIP volunteers = 17,520
