National Business Products Industry 2015 guide PHL 23366 cityofhope.org/nbpi Table of Contents I want people to understand how important this hospital was for my family. What City of Hope has given me is indescribable. I am forever in their debt. Ben Teller, patient and supporter 2015 Spirit of Life® Honoree...................................................................... 2 NBPI and City of Hope.............................................................................. 9 Participate....................................................................................................11 Promote Innovative Programs...............................................................19 Ways to Give . ..........................................................................................27 The Mission of Hope............................................................................... 33 National Business Products Council...................................................34 1 2015 Spirit of Life ® Honoree On behalf of Hewlett-Packard and the National Business Products Industry (NBPI) Council, please accept our sincere thanks and appreciation for our record success last year, raising $12.4 million. Those efforts brought our industry’s 32 year support total to an astounding $130 million! Our record success was due to the collective efforts from the hundreds of business products companies and executives that support City of Hope each and every year. More important, new therapies, drugs and discoveries developed at City of Hope have made a difference, currently impacting the lives of millions of patients across the globe every year. It is easy to see how our partnership with City of Hope, in their quest to save and extend lives, is truly one of our greatest achievements. As you know, our work is far from complete. We call upon NBPI executives to activate your personal and company support: • Attend and host fundraising events and golf outings. • Engage your associates to initiate employee giving activities and payroll deductions. • Designate a product that supports City of Hope, where a portion of sales are donated. • Participate in one of our personal gift clubs or consider placing City of Hope in your estate. • Seek support from your company’s foundation. • Serve as an ambassador for City of Hope and encourage others to get involved. Hope matters to the patients and families who are battling cancer and diabetes. Thank you in advance for your kind consideration and generous support. 2 Sincerely, The Spirit of Life‰ Award is presented to individuals who exemplify the ideals and values that have guided City of Hope for nearly a century, and whose professional and humanitarian accomplishments are worthy of celebration. Steve Sakumoto Vice-President and General Manager Hewlett-Packard Company Recipients of this prestigious award include a broad range of leaders from the world of business, entertainment, science and philanthropy. The industry’s generosity made possible landmarks where innovative science and medicine happen. Today, the National Business Products Industry's support remains crucial to City of Hope’s efforts to quickly translate lab discoveries into better treatment for patients around the world. In 1983, a group of corporate leaders banded together to form the National Business Products Council, an alliance dedicated to supporting City of Hope. In more than 32 years of annual fundraising, this group has passed a remarkable milestone: $130 million raised for the search for cures. The industry has created a legacy with lifesaving impact. 2014 Events Support from the National Business Products Industry has been instrumental in funding milestone projects at City of Hope — buildings like the Center for Biomedicine & Genetics, City of Hope Helford Clinical Research Hospital and the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center for Cancer Immunotherapeutics & Tumor Immunology. “We encourage you to host a golf outing, give your associates the opportunity to get involved or create a product that donates a portion of sales to City of Hope. It improves relationships with your vendors, creates a positive culture within your organization and develops brand loyalty with consumers.” Jamie Fellowes Fellowes Inc. 8 9 Participate Throughout the fundraising year, our industry gathers for a series of great networking opportunities that raise funds for a wonderful cause — research and treatment at City of Hope. The philanthropy of the National Business Products Industry has made a significant impact at City of Hope over the past 32 years. There are many ways to help continue this tradition. Attend some of the industry events taking place throughout the year. Host a golf outing or special event fundraiser with your vendors and suppliers. Most important, engage others and be creative. You can make a difference, and together we can help City of Hope find a cure. Ways to make a difference Ways to make a difference Participate. Attend. Donate. This year, the “Hope Matters” initiative culminates at the Spirit of Life Gala on September 17, 2015 at the Chicago Hilton. We will join together to honor Steve Sakumoto of Hewlett-Packard Company and his leadership in the industry’s efforts to support City of Hope’s lifesaving mission. This promises to be an inspiring night, celebrating the industry’s tradition of passionate support for the quest for cures at City of Hope. Leaders pledged $1 million to fund leading-edge diabetes investigations at City of Hope. This pledge established the National Business Products Industry Professorship in Diabetes Research. The endowed position means that when you donate, your gift keeps on giving in perpetuity — fueling future research to defeat diabetes. Thanks to our generous benefactors we have reached our $1 million goal! Almost 26 million Americans must face diabetes. City of Hope strives to help them live longer, better lives. And your support is vital. I want to personally thank each member of the National Business Products Industry for honoring me with the distinction of the National Business Products Industry Professor in Diabetes Research. Your faith in the promise of my research is so very meaningful to me. As the rates of diabetes continue to rise dramatically, understanding its causes and complications is vital. NBPI’s generosity is helping me to identify genetic underpinnings of diabetes, and complications like heart disease and kidney failure. Ultimately, this research will help us develop new ways to treat people coping with these life-threatening health issues — touching the lives of so many men, women and children here and around the world. A longtime supporter of City of Hope through United Stationers and the annual National Business Products Industry fundraising initiative, Jeff Howard, along with his wife Sarah and their two children Lindsay and Tyler, wanted a way to continue that support on a personal level. Estate planning and leading the Business Products Industry Estate Giving Challenge effort was a perfect fit for them. “Our commitment to give back Sarah, Jeff, Lindsay and Tyler Howard and help others has always been a family affair. The decision we made to include City of Hope in our estate plans — and help fund research that will save lives in the future — might actually impact the lives of our kids and grandkids. It doesn’t have to be a large gift. Everything and every little bit helps — and if everyone does something, it can really add up.” THe Mission of HOpe Dear Friends, For 32 consecutive years, City of Hope has enjoyed the loyal support of executives and companies from the business products industry, to date raising more than $130 million. This is truly remarkable and we are eternally grateful. This astounding achievement is possible thanks to the generosity of literally hundreds of companies every year. It has been and continues to be our sincere privelege to work with you in our mutual quest to provide lifesaving funds for research, treatment and education at City of Hope.
