Age Groups Very few things typify the Australian culture of “having a go” more than surf life saving. Children and families come together to have fun, make new friends, learn to live healthy and active lives and give to their community. The Nipper Program aims to teach children surf awareness, surf skills, lifesaving skills, competitive and teamwork skills as they progress through the age groups from Under 6 to Under 14. To be able to register for Nippers, Children must be at least 5 years old and no older than 13 years as of 30th of September. The Age Group that your child would be in is also calculated as their age on this date. Not only are the Coochie Nippers having fun and meeting new friends, they are part of an iconic organisation that has served the Australian community for more than 100 years. The skills the nippers develop may also help them to one day save a life ! The Nipper will gain a good awareness of beach hazards and a basic knowledge of resuscitation and first aid skills relevant to their age group. Location, travel and times The Surf Education Program is a lifesaving education program designed for 5 - 13 year olds. This education program provides young members of Surf Life Saving with developmental lessons that provide an introduction into the surf awareness and surf safety aspects of the Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC). The SRC is the introductory award for a patrolling surf lifesaver (13 - 15). What will your children do at Nippers ? Activities include Age groups * Surf Safety * Surf swimming What do you need to bring to nippers ? * Rescue & Resuscitation * Flags Parent involvement * Wading * Running Registration process & Membership fees * Board paddling This brochure provides some of the initial key information for parents including We can’t wait for the season to start and hope to see you Location, Travel & Times The nippers, in essence junior life savers, meet each Sunday on Coochiemudlo Island. Club training and patrols are conducted at Main Beach at well marked training areas. These areas are between the jetty and the vehicle barge ramp. If we experience poor weather the nippers may be moved to the beach at the other side of the island. Travel to and from the Island can be via the passenger ferry or vehicle barge. Both vessels depart from Victoria Point jetty and Coochiemudlo Island at regular intervals. Concessional fares are available for registered Club Members who are wearing their Coochiemudlo Island SLS Club shirt. Travel on ferry and/or barge is at the expense of the member. The Nipper program runs from 8.30am to 11am each Sunday at Coochiemudlo Island. So if your child is 8 at midnight on September 30, they would be in the Under 9’s. Finding your Age Group on the beach - On Sundays, the children will meet their Age Group Managers in the clearing in the middle of main beach on the foreshore at a flag marked with their age group. While most children have the tricoloured noddy the under 6’s will be wearing red noddies and the under 7’s green, as this helps the Age Group Manager identify their children more easily. It is expected that registered Nippers will be all wearing their noddy, be well sun screened with no jewellery and have a water bottle. The Age Group Manager will mark the roll and brief the children on the program for the day. The noddy signifies that the child is under the supervision of the Age Managers and the club. At the end of the session, names are marked off and caps can be removed. Age Group Managers - Usually parents themselves, Age Group Managers are appointed by the club and have done the required Age Manager training. The Under 6 & Under 7 program - Our Under 6 and Under 7 Certificates - Children in the Under 13 Age group will sit for their Resuscitation Certification. Under 14’s sit for their Surf Rescue Certification that enables them to commence beach patrol duties at the club. Swimming skills - While swimming skills are developed, it is important that parents appreciate that it is not the role of the program to teach children to swim. Children must be able to swim in freestyle unaided. program is provided to give children an introduction to lifesaving through fun activities and games. Importantly, there is no deep water work. And the kids love the games that involve parents. Upon joining nippers Under 6’s & 7’s must be accompanied at all times (both on the beach and in the water) by a parent or adult guardian who is registered as a member. Registration forms and Blue Card forms are available at the club, and we also ask that parents introduce themselves to the Age Group Manager.
