Winter 2012 - Hope House Ministries
Please Support... Hope House Ministries Annual Appeal 2012! A Ministry Supported by the Montfort Missionaries Vol. 21, No. 1 WINTER 2012 A Message from Fr. Frank Dear Friends and Benefactors: It’s hard to believe that in April we will be celebrating 32 years of ministering to wounded young people and families in crisis. There is so much history, so many stories of triumph and struggle, of despair and of hope, with despondent endings and refreshing new beginnings. Thousands of lives changed and transformed. The miracle of Hope House Ministries is not one man’s creative vision come true — determined to make a difference in our world, but rather the phenomenal commitment of many hands and hearts willing to share their time, talent and treasure so others might have a second chance at life. From our earliest days, the decision was made not to accept government funding. So, for more than Fr. Francis Pizzarelli, three decades we have survived and grown and touched countless lives because of all of you readSMM, LCSW-R, ACSW, DCSW Founder and Executive Director “. . . Hope House Ministries is not one man’s creative vision come true — determined to make a difference in our world, but rather the phenomenal commitment of many hands and hearts willing to share their time, talent and treasure. . . ” If you no longer wish to receive our newsletter, please contact the Development Department at (631) 473-8796 or e-mail hhmterry@optonline.net ing this newsletter and sharing a little bit of your treasure with us. My primary reason for rejecting government money is too often there are so many strings attached, that they block you from effectively working with the person in need. From experience, the government bureaucracy more than not sets people up for failure. Every day, I am constantly amazed at the profound generosity of so many people. So many who support our Ministry do not give out of their excess, but out of their need. We survive from year to year thanks to thousands of people who make regular contributions so our Ministry can continue to grow and reach out and make a profound difference in our world. All of our residential programs are filled to capacity with each program developing a growing waiting list for services. Our mental health Center continues to provide a wide range of therapeutic resources for people of all ages. We have also been fortunate to develop a psychiatric component to our treatment services. Siena House, which is our residence for women who suffer at the hands of domestic violence and abuse, is also filled to capacity with an ever growing waiting list. They are women who are given an opportunity to heal and reclaim their lives without fear or shame. Pax Christi, our hospitality center for the homeless, continues to be our most challenging Ministry. The homeless have no voice, and no fixed address. Often times they are not treated with respect and dignity. This year we celebrate 20 years of ministry to them. In January 1992, a veteran froze to death in a box house along the train tracks between Port Jefferson Village and Stony Brook. He had no family to speak of. No one claimed his body. So I offered to bury him with dignity and respect. After his funeral, I discovered an entire little box house village along the tracks in the woods. Most of these men were frightened and suffering from various forms of mental illness. A good number of them were veterans suffering from Post-traumatic stress disorder and truly afraid to reach out to the Veterans Administration for help. That experience, and the realization that there were no resources for these homeless people, gave birth to Pax Christi. The heart of our ministry is our Community House, where everything began in April 1980. Today, thousands of young men have reclaimed their lives because of that community residence. cont’d. on page 8 Annual Holiday Party 2011 28TH ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY A TRIUMPHANT SUCCESS!! Hope House Ministries was once again blessed with a full house at our 28th Annual Holiday Party, held on November 28th, 2011, at the grand Villa Lombardi’s Catering Hall in Holbrook. Celebrating our 31st year of ministry, the event raised over $256,000!! Over 750 of Hope House’s dedicated supporters joined together to kick off the holiday season in a most festive way. It began with the continued generosity of the Lombardi family who, as for the past seventeen years, donated the entire catering package, presenting a truly decadent buffet and an abundance of luscious desserts. As always, their highly professional staff did an exceptional job in creating an extraordinary and memorable event, from the beautifully decorated hall to the most attentive detail in serving the party-goers. The engaging young men of Hope House serenaded the crowd with holiday songs, and the Naked Truth Band gave a truly winning performance. Suffolk County Legislator Sarah S. Anker of the Sixth Legislative District presents Board Members Charles Russo (left) and Richard LoNigro with a Certificate of Congratulations for Hope House’s thirty-one years of hard work and dedication to our community. Ms. Anker also helped secure a $1,000 legislative grant for Hope House earlier in the year. RAFFLE WINNERS Our guests were also given the opportunity to participate in the Silent Auction, which offered over 125 items and raised over $19,700! Sayville CROP Walk supports HHM On October 30th over 125 communityminded individuals gathered in Sayville to march in an area CROP walk. Almost $1,900 has been promised to support HHM by the efforts of the Sayville Congressional United Church of Christ (organized by Chairpersons Jerry Avolio and Gini McLaughlin, Co-Chairman, Mike Jayne and Treasurer, Judith Jayne). Along with other churches in the Sayville and Patchogue area, Girl Scout groups and clubs from local high schools, this church put in many hours of hard work to bring this event to a record level. For the first time in four years, the Sayville Congressional United Church of Christ raised over $15,000 through this fundraiser, of which 25% goes to support local charities. The purpose of the walk, sponsored by the Church World Services Group, is to support international hunger efforts as well as to offer assistance to local charities. We feel so blessed to have been one of those chosen agencies, as this gift will go a long way to helping those in need throughout our ministry! 6 B O U N TI F U L B L E S S I N G S . . . Salon Dale in Port Jefferson gives gifts for hope Dale Pollina of Salon Dale in Port Jefferson, along with clients, recently made a commitment to give back to those in need. Each Sunday Dale drops off food, clothing, hats and wish list items to name a few in support of the Community House. We are so appreciative to Dale and her clients and friends for their giving spirits! When asked why it was important to her to share these gifts with our young men, Dale said “I just want to let the residents of Hope House know that there is someone out there who cares!” Saints Philip and James School Several very generous 7th and 8th grade students from Saints Philip & James School spent countless hours collecting items from our ministry’s wish list and then delivering them to Hope House in December. The children arrived carrying over 50 white kitchen garbage bags filled to the max with items for those in need at our outreaches. The packages included socks, laundry detergent, granola bars, soap, combs, undershirts, twin sheets, towels, gloves, scarves, shampoo, toilet paper, razors, wash clothes, combs, cases of small toothpaste, toothbrushes, etc. This kind act helped our ministry so abundantly! Thanks to the students, staff and parents who all helped to make this extraordinary gift happen. Sock Hop On Tuesday, November 22, 2011 Nassakeag Elementary School children came together to dance for a cause. The first Sock Hop / Dance-a-thon took place at the school’s gym. There were 122 participants who raised 122 Toys for Tots. They collected 427 pairs of new men’s socks along with a $1,438 donation both of which was given to Hope House Ministries. Music for the event was donated by Chad Erlitz of L.I. Nights Entertainment. A good time was had by all! Community House Residents Giving Back “When’s That Lady Coming Back?” If our very own residents of Hope House have learned anything, it’s about giving back to the community! These young men with humble hearts have felt the love and support from countless individuals, families and businesses from our local area. As a way of “paying it forward” they have become involved in several community service projects. – by Sylvia Khan, volunteer First, the residents assist with Holiday Magic, which was founded by our Chairman of the Board, Charlie Russo. The young men organize and wrap the donated toys, load/unload trucks and make holiday deliveries. Next, they participate in Backpack Pirates. The residents meet at Sailor’s Haven, bring over 500 backpacks and help assemble bags with school supplies for children in need. The residents help to prepare a picnic lunch and then distribute bags to the children. Lastly, each year they attend and collect items to support a Homeless Vigil at a local university, held to help people in Long Island shelters. Here, people donate baby clothing, baby food, regular clothing, food, toiletries, etc. The residents of Hope House help collect and distribute the items to the less fortunate. What a remarkable impression those in our community have made on our young men! It is heartwarming to see the giving come full circle. Foundation Support is Key for HHM Gifts from local charitable foundations are vital to our survival each year! We are so blessed to bring in a large portion of our gifts from this avenue of giving. Here are just a few of the gifts that we have received recently and for which we are ever grateful! Richard and Mary Morrison Foundation Fund for the Poor The Richard E. Capri Foundation Sarita Kenedy East Foundation Brunetti Foundation $15,000 $10,000 $5,000 $5,000 $500 Thank you to all the foundations for their community support! These very generous philanthropists help to keep our doors open and our programs running. As a novice storyteller, lo, these many years ago, I was warned that the two toughest audiences are the aged and adolescents. The former tend to fall asleep and the latter need to make a show of indifference or defiance, in order to appear “cool.” So when a friend suggested that I contact Pat Flanagan, the principal of the school at Montfort Therapeutic Residence, I did. Might storytelling be a valuable addition to her program? Ms. Flanagan agreed to try it. The students are boys, ranging in age from thirteen to eighteen years, temporary residents at a facility dedicated to social and academic rehabilitation. At first I myself wondered how successful such a program could be. Early in life, these boys had confronted a range of family and social problems. Pat told me that they probably had never been read to, had never been told stories; she predicted that they would respond well to being offered something lacking in their lives. She was right; storytelling turned out to be a welcome experience, as much for me as for the boys. These young fellows continually astonish me. On one occasion a young man sitting next to the window gazed steadfastly outside through all of the stories. I assumed he wasn’t interested. At the end of the session, when I encouraged some discussion, he was the first to speak, and his comments were right on point. Some weeks later, he asked if I could be at the school a week earlier than my usual schedule because that was to be his last day – he was returning home – and he wanted to hear my stories one more time. Another boy asked me for the title of a story I had told the previous month. He wanted to tell the story to his mother. The story was a folk tale completely foreign to this youngster’s experience, but clearly only in its trappings, not in the universality of its meaning. Besides the necessary purpose of entertaining, isn’t that storytelling’s reason for being, to discover and understand what is human? Ms. Flanagan tells me that she is often asked, “When’s that lady coming back?” Like any adult engaged with young people, I am learning and discovering and increasing my understanding, an ample reward. My fourth year has begun. I will continue as long as the boys want that lady to come back. 7 Volunteer Corner Father Frank’s Message-cont’d. from pg. 1 It is no surprise to many that we are taking this opportunity to highlight the good deeds of longtime Board Member, Richard LoNigro. Recently named Business Man of the Year in the Port Richard LoNigro Times Record, Richie has taken care of those in need since he stepped foot in this area. For the 69 year old owner of Port Jefferson Sporting Goods in Port Jefferson Station, Richie knows all too well about “growing up with nothing” and now, blessed with success, has dedicated his life to giving back to those less fortunate. Richie was born in Brooklyn, raised in Franklin Square and now resides in Port Jefferson. He met Priscilla and started “dating” when they were 13. They were married in 1961 and moved to Selden a few years after that. They were blessed with 11 wonderful children and now have 21 grandchildren (2 more on the way) and 5 greatgrandchildren to add to the group. "My father has done a million individual works of giving that not many know about and it's his belief that's the way it should be," his son, Bobby LoNigro, said. "Supporting children who can't afford to purchase athletic equipment — similar to his childhood — is always something that stands out with all of his children." After LoNigro donated a lacrosse rebounder wall earlier this year to two young boys who live on his street — when their original wall was stolen from their yard — he said, "I hate to see kids not have an opportunity to play sports just because they don't have something. ... To me, that's a sad day." In addition to the countless hours and invaluable gifts that LoNigro has shared with Hope House, he has also been honored as the Suffolk County Police Athletic League's Man of the Year and is a United States Specialty Sports Association Hall of Fame inductee in softball. Thank you, Richie! You are truly an angel to our ministry! Your generous spirit is beyond measure. 8 In the fall two alumni and one community member were sworn in as practicing attorneys in Brooklyn; one young man as an assistant district attorney, another is a public defender in the Bronx and the third is working for a law firm, but doing pro bono work for the poor and needy. Another alumnus, who lived here through his high school years, college years and in graduate school, and because we are his family, he is the Director of Special Education in a small community in South Carolina. He has an advanced degree in Special Education and was recently invited by his graduate school professor to make a presentation on special needs children in Nigeria. He hopes to complete his doctorate in educational leadership by 2016. He is an extraordinary young man who is committed, like the others, to giving back and making a difference. These miracle stories only happened because people like yourselves care enough to sacrifice in support of our Ministry. Thank you for all you do for us throughout the year. Be assured of my prayers at daily Mass for you and your families. Thank you for making a profound difference. Forever grateful, Father Francis Pizzarelli, SMM, LCSW-R, ACSW, DCSW Executive Director-Founder, Hope House Ministries Like Grandfather, Like Grandson He has certainly learned by example! Matthew LoNigro, Jr. age 8, has watched his grandfather, Richie LoNigro and father, Matt LoNigro as they have reached out to those in need over the years. Needless to say, growing up around goodwill has made quite an impression. At a fundraiser where little Matthew was lending a hand, one of many events he attends with his family each year, he was approached by a local philanthropist who commended him for his thoughtfulness and willingness to help. The man gave Matthew $100 and told him to get something for himself for Christmas. Little Matthew was really excited about the gift. Later on, Matthew and his father had gone to visit at Hope House. Several people were gathered around talking with Fr. Frank. As his father, Matt, was speaking to one of the young men that live there, Matthew made his way over to Fr. Frank, looked up at him and pulled that crisp $100 bill out of his pocket. He handed the money to Fr. Frank and said “Here Father, I want you to have this money.” What an amazing gift! What a valuable lesson for all of us to learn from our young ones. Thank you for this special gift, Matthew! Thanks to the staff of Tritec Real Estate Company and many Hope House Ministries volunteers, the Annual Montauk We Hope Bike Tour was a huge success! On September 10th, there were a total of 259 riders who joined in for the day of fun and fitness! The event started with our National Anthem, beautifully sung by Alexandra Meli. Riders of all ages participated this year. Bill School, 72, was the eldest of all and Darby Kent was the youngest at age 10. As a result of the generosity of individuals and businesses that offered their time and monetary assistance, the 2011 event raised over $25,000 in support of our ministry. Mark Your Calendars 13th Annual “Montauk We Hope” Bike Tour Saturday, September 8, 2012 This event was created in 2000 by TRITEC Real Estate Company as a way to improve the health and well-being of its employees while making a positive contribution to the local community. Inspired by the support and commitment of the entire TRITEC staff, Montauk We Hope officially became a New York State 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization in 2002. Over the past several years, Hope House Ministries has been very fortunate to receive the support from events such as the Montauk We Hope Bike Tour. We would like to extend our thanks once again to all the volunteers and benefactors who support this event! The Bethpage High School Senior Seminar Program (CORE) is a class designed to provide seniors in the Bethpage school district the opportunity to learn about the challenges of transition to the college ranks and beyond in a proactive way. This year the goal of CORE is to raise $60,000 for Hope House Ministries, and to use the funds as a renovation project for the Community House. To that end, the school will host an annual lacrosse tournament in the beginning of our season called the Fran McCall Tournament, in honor of the late Fran McCall, who was one of the Bethpage Lacrosse coaching greats. This opportunity presented itself for the CORE program to utilize an annual lacrosse tradition at the school (the Fran McCall Tournament) as the platform to not only gain support from the local community for CORE’s charity endeavor for this year, but at the same time honoring the young men that are currently working hard to get their lives back on the right paths due to what Hope House does. Four teams participate every year, playing first round games on Thursday and the Championship/Consolation games on Saturday. This year Bethpage High School will play Calhoun, and Friends Academy will play Plainview on Thursday, March 22 in the afternoon (times to be determined). On Saturday, March 24 the consolation game will be held at 10 AM, and the Championship game at 1 PM. For event information please contact Matt LoNigro at matt@pjsport.net. On Sunday, December 11, over 600 people gathered at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue to enjoy the 12th Annual “Classic Irish Christmas” Concert benefiting Hope House Ministries. This year’s outstanding cast included Andy Cooney and his band, comedian George Casey, Celtic Folk Artist Kate Purcell, Darrah Irish Dancers and Emcee Mike McCormack. We are most grateful, not only to the talented artists who performed that night, but also to all those in attendance. We are especially indebted to the many volunteers, local businesses and sponsors whose contributions enable our concert to continue and grow each year.
